The latest from around the NL Central…
- “Pitching is our main need” heading into the trade deadline, Theo Epstein told 670 The Score’s Bruce Levine and other reporters. The Cubs were known to be looking for bullpen help even before Brandon Morrow hit the DL with biceps inflammation, and since Morrow’s injury isn’t expected to keep him out for long, Epstein said that the closer’s absence didn’t impact the team’s deadline plans. Yu Darvish’s return from the DL theoretically helps a rotation that has been inconsistent, though Epstein gave a realistic view of what Darvish could contribute, given the right-hander’s own struggles this season. “You can’t be overly reliant on someone who hasn’t been able to go out there and perform this year….if you put yourself in a position where you are overly reliant and defending on it at this point, it is on you then,” Epstein said.
- Beyond pitching, Epstein also noted that “we will probably look in August for someone who can play defense or steal a bag.” He predicted multiple moves prior to September 1, and felt the team would make one more trade prior to the July 31 deadline. Though the president of baseball operations doesn’t “think it’s impossible” that the Cubs make a big-ticket transactions, smaller deals seem more likely, as Epstein felt “we are going to be a little more selective and opportunistic” with their options after dealing top prospects in other trades in recent years. For instance, the Athletic’s Patrick Mooney writes that it seems “highly unlikely” that the Cubs would move catching prospect Miguel Amaya for a rental player like Baltimore’s Zach Britton.
- With the Pirates on a run of 10 wins in their last 11 games, GM Neal Huntington said in a radio appearance today (hat tip to Stephen J. Nesbitt of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette) that his team “would love to add” at the trade deadline. “If there’s something out there that makes sense and makes us better, we’re absolutely open to that,” Huntington said. The Pirates are still just a modest 51-49 on the season and are battling several other teams in a crowded NL playoff picture, though the Bucs are now four games back of the Braves for the final wild card slot (and 4.5 games behind the struggling Brewers, who hold the first wild card position).
- Jose Martinez’s poor defense has made him a part-time player with the Cardinals, despite 13 homers and a .295/.361/.471 slash line this season. Martinez tells Ben Frederickson of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that he understands the team’s decision, and that he “would love to be a Cardinal for my career” even though he seems far more suited for a DH role with an American League team. With the Cards not really positioned to be buyers or sellers, Frederickson suggests that the club could approach the coming trade deadline as “an overdue round of roster maintenance that addresses the easiest-to-solve problems and optimizes returns on pieces that don’t fit into the puzzle moving forward.” This would include dealing Martinez, as “his value to AL teams might never be higher” given his current success and his long-term controllability through the 2022 season.
There you go Cards. you always wanted to be sellers, so get to sellin
Don’t particularly mind the selling part. My concern is the guy that got this mess put together, John Mozeliak!! Heaven forbid that the Cardinals Owners will leave him in charge to put together a team after selling off. His evaluation of free agent relievers is disastrous!! Brett Cecil, Luke Gregerson, Holland, Leone. Then ad Fowler’s contract. All wasted money. Look at the infield he’s assembled. They are all utility players, so is the bench. No Left handed starters. No left handlers the manager would dare to bring in out of the bullpen. (Cecil and Lyons). Mozeliak needs to be released and let Michael Girsch rebuild the team.
Couldn’t agree more
Must agree with you… The ignorance of him putting blame on everyone else when he is the evil genius who built this roster and signed all of the terrible free agents. What a damn mess he has made and we will suffer for 2 more years trying to dig out of this mess. I have an idea Mr. Bow tie why don’t you fire yourself… might be the best move you ever made.
The chose Mo over Ludlow. This is in Dewitt
How about Martinez for Buxton?
Lol that made me laugh.
Why? Buxton sucks. I’ll admit most trade ideas on here are silly, but is Buxton still really worth all that much? I’d probably rather have Martinez. Buxton’s star has faded fast.
it’s not a terrible proposal. but the Cardinals already have 9 million outfielders. I’m not sure Buxton would be put in a spot where he could get regular PT.
Happy to hear Buccos want to be buyers. To all those who complain it’s not worth it for a one game playoff, get some perspective, it’s better than setting home.
Not necessarily
I can see you’re a “glass half empty” kind of guy.
They should look into trades for Kolten Wong, Jedd Gyorko, Carlos Martinez, Jose Martinez, and Bud Norris. The Cards could really maximize a return for Martinez right now with such a lack of top-end starting pitching on the market. Any contender would be in on the bidding and quickly rejuvenate a dead Cardinals farm. A few teams are looking for 2B/3B options so Wong and Gyorko could be good fits, especially for the Red Sox.
Nobody will want Carlos Martinez now, since he’s back on the DL.
He’s only expected to miss one start
A dead Cardinals farm?? Umm…no.
Enlighten me then since they only have Carson Kelly and Tyler O’Neill on the top 100 lists and they are both currently blocked on the MLB roster.
Tons of pitching down there
Dead Farm system? That made me Lol, because it’s far from the truth
They have tried to move those guys. MLB Radio/TV broadcasters had a lengthily discussion that the Cardinals have no position players that any contending team would want. Unless they needed a super utility player. Jim Bowden went on to say there are young pitching prospects in the Cardinals farm system, but no star players coming up. They did not mention John Mozeliak’s name but did infer his poor free agent signings over the past 2 1/2 years was basically money flushed down the toilet. Also, Bowden went on to say that if the Cardinals didn’t not pick up anyone to help them before the trade deadline, it will make 4 years in a row that Mozeliak has stood pat. The Bottom line they were getting at was the downfall of the Cardinals, the Cardinal Way, and being known as a yearly playoff contender is totally John Mozeliak’s fault!!! Their last quote was defending Mathaney. The said that Casey Stengel couldn’t even make a playoff team out of the personnel that Mozeliak gave Mathaney year after year!!!
The Pirates are pipe-dreaming. Nice little run and all, but you’re not making the playoffs.
I’d have agreed with you last week. But now, 11 in a row….Pitching AND hitting …both are doing extremely well. 3 games back of Wild Card and 6 out of first place. I’d beg to differ. Even if they lose a game….this team is on fire. I’ll bet you are a butt hurt Brew Crew fan upset that you cannot finish out a season.
The AL is so top heavy, the A’s have a better record than the entire NL minus the Cubs at 57-43, yet they’re exactly as far out of the playoffs as the 51-49 Pittsburgh pirates.
They’re very top heavy, but they’re also very bottom heavy. That have the four best teams in the MLB, but they also have the three worst teams (by a pretty wide margin). The NL is also leading the season series against the AL.
53-49 now bub
Dodgers might face similar problem with Muncy, So far, he is a butcher with the glove. Needs to improve to be tolerable long term.
The man is rocking a 1.007 OPS he could man the hot corner with no glove wearing only a banana hammock & I think I can speak for all Dodgers fans when I say we’ll take it.
Look, at this point I don’t care about anything except the banana hammock. How would it work? What would he look like wearing t?
I mean I feel like it would be Kikè’s hand me down banana hammock. The team is pretty close. I’d bet Muncy would look pretty rectangular. My question is does the chest hair match the haircut? These are some hard hitting questions that I feel should be addressed.
It’s obviously gonna have to be white to keep the consistency of the uniform color scheme, noice & toight all around yet with enough flexibility to make the tough plays. This banana hammock may or may not pay homage to Chase Utley in some fashion.
Also, @Blue, the carpet definitely matches the drapes.
Thanks for getting into this in-depth analysis with me.
Moving Nova Harrison and Mercer should be the only thing they do. If someone wants cervili send him also but let Kramer and Morroff Newman play
Moving them also includes finding someone willing to guve up something that they could use. Easier said than done. Who needs an average shortstop? Who needs an average 2nd baseman?
And therein lies the problem.Mercer and Harrison are not difference makers and they are making decent money. That is why the Pirates as not getting offers for much in return. Both of these guys are good enough, though,to help a team who needs help up the middle.
Why would you move Nova or Harrison? Horrible argument. Do yourself and all of us a favor and delete your account.
Beyond pitching, Epstein also noted that “we will probably look in August for someone who can play defense or steal a bag.”
Sounds reminiscent of the acquisition of Dave Roberts and Doug Mientkiewicz in 2004. Worked out for Theo before–but whom would he target this year?
Craig Gentry comes to mind.
Billy hamilton
I don’t see any way the Reds give up Hamilton in a trade during the season. Maybe during the offseason, but not in-season.
It’s not like losing Billy this year ruins their chances of anything. Phillip Erivin can play center and seems to have found his form in AAA, plus Schebler isn’t a terrible option in center as well.
The question is, who do you think the Cubs are willing to give up for Hamilton?
Not a whole heck of a lot for a guy who would be a late inning defensive replacement and pinch runner.
I don’t think it would be an OF. Heyward would not be taken out and they have Almora.
I know rosters expand, but an IF would still make sense.
Neither LaStella or Bote are gold glove or speedster types.
LaStella is the best pinch hitter in the game this year. Subs at 2nd and 3rd. No way Epstein trades him.
Bote made a hell of a play the weekend before the all star break. Unfortunately. He’s not a gold glove player he’s versatile because like 85% of the Cubs position players he can play 3 or more places. This year Baez should easily win a gold glove. No one can match his defense in the NL. No one comes close to him.
Theo has a history of saying something, and then doing the opposite. Just sayin. He might add a big bat.
The Cubs don’t need a big bat. They have several big bats and they lead the NL in offense. He’s correct in that pitching is their first, second, and third need.
He also needs to make a good move as he’s made some awful ones of late.
Yu Darvish lmao
Best team in NL wo Darvish. Lmao
I wonder if the Pirates players know what they are? The team that wins in bunches, or loses in bunches? A trade or two adding to the team could be just the boost they need to be convinced they are the team that wins in bunches. At any rate, I doubt they could get enough for their moveable players to justify selling when we can’t truly say what this team is.
good thought oldhaus, was thinking same thing. do not follow pirates
close enough so let me ask you – would adding some type of veteran
leader type of player help them play more consistent winning ball?
So much of this is mental. If Huntington showed confidence in the team by adding a decent arm, maybe the act of buying would be enough to push them toward a potential playoff. Esprit de corps. But who knows, when they have been bad…selling most of them off for low A prospects sounds good.
I wonder what Milwaukee won’t do
The Pirates need to figure out what they are going to do with Corey Dickerson.
Unless they are going to sign him to an extension (which wouldn’t make a lot of sense with Marte and Polanco already signed long term and with Meadows, Martin, Reynolds, Swaggerty, etc. waiting in the wings) they should probably trade him now while his value is at it’s highest and since Meadows can be the everyday LF. If the offers aren’t good enough, keep him and move him in the winter.
Unless the Astros want to offer a package that starts with Forrest Whitley, they should hang up on any calls for Vazquez.
Those are the only two Pirates players with enough value to return a quality prospect (or more for Vazquez) in a thrifty trade market.
Kevin Newman seems ready. They might trade Freese just to clear a spot for him, unless a team like MIL is willing to offer up a halfway decent prospect for Mercer.
As far as adding, maybe they’d offer up a AAA player who would be a Rule 5 casualty for a rental RP.
The Pirates cannot trade Dickerson now as the outfielders have been the key to the rebirth. They will need to trade him over the winter.
They would have received Whitley in the Cole trade if the Astros were willing to trade him.Keep Vasquez. There is nothing more disheartening than not having a good closer.
They have not been able to trade any veterans because they have not been offered anyone decent for them.By keeping them NH can say that he is going for the wild card.
I wonder if a trade of Brault,Harrison,Smoker, and Frazier to Baltimore for Britton and Schoop would work for both teams.
I’d argue that 6 years of Vazquez is worth more than the 2 years of Cole they sold.
People need to remember they didn’t trade the AL All Star of 2018, they traded the Gerrit Cole with a 4 something ERA of the past two years.
My point was there is no way I’d trade Vazquez, short of a getting a top ten pitching prospect like Whitley, which the Astros wouldn’t do, which means I wouldn’t trade Vazquez. Personally, I wouldn’t as well, he’s my favorite pitcher to watch. That slider is unfair.
Cole was not going to reach his potential with Pittsburgh. They stupidly stiffed him a few hundred thousand dollars after 2015,and he is the type of pitcher who needs to have his team in the race.My point on Whitley is I think that the Astros value him so much that he is untouchable.
Personally, I believe that going for it now isn’t the strongest strategy for the Buccos. While they could conceivably earn a wildcard berth, its a very competitive NL. Futhermore, Philly chicago atlanta los angeles and mikwaukee are built for the future while the reds, marlins, and padres could potentially be solid within the next 3-5 years.
If it doesn’t work out, you lose Mercer for nothing and Dickerson and Nova become rental chips. With this in mind while looking at the league layout, beginning a rebuild this offseason could turn a 2-3 year retool to a 6 year rebuild.
How?
Right now, Nova and Dickerson woud get back more than they would next year and Cervelli and Mercer could get you something too. This is big because non-superstars don’t extract nearly as much as rentals.
The better talent acquired for those two, the prospects acquired for the 2 impending FA’s and Marte and Harrison deals could have the Buccos back by 2020 with the great young core they have already started forming (Musgrove, Taillon, Moran, Bell, Kingham etc)
Huntington is playing a dangerous game, but I kinda like it. Looking at their farm, they have a couple guys on the cusp of being MLB ready and could be potential trade chips.
Now, conventional wisdom says Pitt should just be sellers and keep building for the future. They could certainly do that.
Or they can take full advantage of the NL’s current vulnerability.
In their own division the Brewers are struggling mightily. That is the current benchmark for a wild card spot. With plenty of in-division games I can see why the Pirates think they can snag a playoff spot.
NL East has 1 team that wants to win but can’t, and 2 teams afraid to make a move (Atl, Phil). NL West is where Pittsburgh needs to worry.
If Pitt takes 2 of 3 from Cleveland they should consider going for it. They could potentially take 3 of 4 from the Mets and suddenly they are a force to be reckoned with. But only if they beat Cleveland.
During their 50 games of poor performance the Pirates could not beat any good teams and split with the others.Unfortunately they get the two best Cleveland starters in the three game series. They have to continue beating up on the bad teams and at least split with the good ones.
I do not believe now that NH will be trading his veterans as I do not believe that he has been offered much at all and as such they are more valuable to the Pirates than anyone else.
The Pirates may be a better road team now unless they start to get some fans coming to the ballpark.Mccutcheon was a nice player but he needed to be traded and they did get something good for him.I doubt that he gets more than $25M for a three year contract now.
I think that with the games left with Minnesota and Kansas City and the Mets and possibly( should I say!) St Louis that beating up on these teams could put them in the middle of the wild card race which is something that NH has said that the goal has been all year long.
Colin Dunlap just brought up an interesting name, Chris Archer.
I’d pondered a sign Dickerson to an extension and trade Meadows for Brad Hand type of scenario, but that’s now moot. The other guy who fits that profile is Iglesias of the Reds and I don’t see that happening.
But, if they could turn Meadows into Archer…that’s the only type of deal they should part with a top prospect for….Archer is signed through 2021.
PS- It’s so funny to me that two weeks ago, the usual suspects in the local media said the team was a dumpster fire with no good players and this proves the failure of management and ownership. NOW, they are saying that this team is a legit contender and if the Pirates don’t add to this great core of players then that would now be a failure of management and ownership.
Nice thoughts. It all comes dpwn to the players performing to their expectations. Look at their AS Game rep..no one except Dickerson would even be considered. Vazquez numbers were below his for the season.
9 game winning streaks will do that to people.
Is miguel amaya Contreras good? How is his Defense and offense? Could he possibly be a September call up.
He has the potential, he’s starting to heat up offensively but already a crazy good defender. But still at least 1 to 2 years away esp on our squad.
Anything possible but I really doubt him being a sept call up on this team. Next year I cld see it possibly. But u never know.
Jose can you see…..AL
If Theo could build a farm system which he can’t they would have talent to make some deals. This guy is a above average GM but far from the Savior people think he is. The Yankees, Astros, Braves, Dodgers and BoSox all do far far better developing talent
Lol u I’m never surprised by this crap anymore. Theo hit on like 9 first round picks almost all of which who r either stars or very good starters on our Mlb roster. We Further to pleaded the system by getting Chatman to win the World Series and even though I love Torres And cringe every time I see him do something good for the yanks, I would still do that trade again in a heartbeat because it got us a World Series title. Also cease and Jimenez both great too but they went for Q(jury still out on that one) I like an a lot tho, Been pitching really well lately to specially last night he was very good.
But this Theo doesn’t know how to make a farm system is just ludicrous and comical.
Btw I’m Talking about his tenure with the Cubs, not the Red Sox.
Theo drafted the following players: Bryant, Almora, Schwarber, and Happ. All of which were top 10 selections with Bryant being an absolute easy selection and the only one many would consider a star.
Where are the other 5 players he drafted???
Additionally, there isnt one pitcher on the Cubs roster in which was signed and developed by them. I’d argue that the criticism Theo cannot sustain a farm system, which dates back to his days with Boston, are still valid today with the Cubs.
While he still has great success in major league acquisitions (i.e Arrieta and Rizzo) the jury is still out on if this team will be sustainable once arbitration hits them.
Correct who else has he drafted, nobody
Moron
