7:27pm: Then again, a source tells Chelsea Janes of the Washington Post (Twitter link) that it’s “not accurate” to say the sides have discussed Hamels.
Of course, the Nats do have someone on hand to watch Hamels in action tonight, as Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News reports on Twitter. The Braves, Cubs, Phillies, Yankees, and Diamondbacks do as well.
Of course, there are other players on view as well. The Atlanta organization may be looking at lefty reliever Jake Diekman, MLB.com’s Mark Bowman suggests on Twitter.
As for the Nationals, Janes tweets that noted D.C. executive Dan Jennings is the rep in Arlington, though she suggests his appearance is “more due diligence.”
7:15pm: The Nationals are the latest team with some level of interest in Rangers lefty Cole Hamels, according to MLB.com’s Jon Morosi. Those two organizations are said to have engaged in “trade discussions,” though there’s no indication that a deal is particularly close.
It’s not surprising to see the Nats angling to deepen their rotation and Hamels is certainly a pitcher with whom the organization is familiar. Of course, it’s also a bit interesting to hear of this particular connection given a rather notable run-in between Hamels and the D.C. ballclub, though that was some years ago.
After a strong outing on June 19th, Hamels owned a 3.41 ERA. After four sub-optimal times out, though, he’s all the way up to a 4.36 mark that arguably better reflects his true talent level at this stage of an outstanding career.
On the one hand, Hamels is back to generating a strikeout per nine after a big fall-off in 2017. On the other, he’s giving up home runs on 20.2% of the flyballs put in play against him. ERA estimators mostly view Hamels as a solid hurler — he’s at a 5.06 FIP, 4.11 xFIP, and 4.06 SIERA this year — but there’s not much reason to believe that Hamels is the top-line starter he once was.
Perhaps there’s some added appeal in the fact that Hamels has a long history of good work in the postseason, even if his most recent appearance — a 2016 dud for the Rangers — did not go as hoped. All told, he has thrown 98 1/3 innings of 3.48 ERA ball over 16 playoff starts. Hamels was also named the MVP of the 2008 World Series.
Contract will play a major role in the market for Hamels. He’s earning $22.5MM this year, a hefty rate for a sub-elite starter. He’s also due a $6MM buyout on a $20MM club option for 2019. Increasingly, it seems likely he’ll end up receiving the break-up fee.
Hamels can block trades to twenty teams, but the Nats are not among them. Neither are the division-rival Braves. The Atlanta organization has been linked loosely to Hamels in the recent past. Morosi suggests the Braves are indeed at least taking a look, though it’s not clear if there’s serious interest.

Most underrated SP on trade block imo
SwipeRightForPinder
I entirely disagree, if anything he’s the most overrated pitcher on the block. While I will admit he is a much better pitcher away from Globe Life, he still has a 4.17 road FIP and is pretty much a #4 starter. However, fans/pundits haven’t coveted him as such. Instead they still view him as the front-of-the-rotation starter he once was.
nste23
It’s so fitting you think Hamels is overrated and your username is swipe right for Pinder
Modified_6
Well, I’m a huge Rangers fan and I’d agree 100%. Being a fan of a rival team/player doesn’t always mean you can’t be reasonable or unbiased.
iverbure
Most underrated starter on the market… your definition of underrated is vastly different than mine.
jdgoat
How’s he underrated? He’s clearly on the down swing and has the stats that back that up

This isn’t 2009…

No way is he the most underrated. The most over paid is more like it

Guys thought Verlander was done last year too
bobo5555
He got shelled tonight. Looked horrific on every level.

A Hamels trade makes ZERO sense for the Nats. More than 5 games out of 1st in the NL East, multiple teams fighting for the WC spots. Trade the pending FAs. Bryce, Murphy, etc. The Nats wouldn’t be blowing it up. They’d still be contending with the likes of Soto, Mad Max, Strasburg, Turner, among others.
T_Rexx2
I don’t think Bryce is a guy you really can trade… yes he would bring back a good return even though he is a rental like Machado, but he was supposed to be one of the faces of baseball. It just would be wrong.
petfoodfella
Business wise, it makes sense if they don’t turn it around sharply in the next 8 days. The haul he would bring a team that’s on the fringe would be huge for Washington.
But, they risk the fan backlash. But he’s not signing in Washington next year, IMO.
Tom
Machado didn’t bring a haul, and he’s been a better player than Harper—both this season and throughout their careers. And he plays a more demanding position. Harper would get less of a return than Machado. Might just be better to take the draft pick.
petfoodfella
hahaha, no.
thecoffinnail
You can laugh all you want but Harper is not bringing back even a top 100 prospect for 2 months. He is having just an ok year with the bat and he plays the OF. The Indians are the only playoff team I can think of that needs OF help and undoubtedly they are going to want a RH bat. There are other players out there who can provide just as much value and don’t have the burden of having the hype of Bryce Harper.
majorflaw
“But he’s not signing in Washington next year, IMO.”
Just out of curiosity, what is your HO based on? Have you followed his career closely, do you have any insights into Harper’s thoughts that the rest of us are not privy to, Mack83? I’m assuming there is a substantive basis for your opinion and you aren’t just spouting off about something you really know nothing about. Spare a clue?
johnrealtime
He will not bring back a top 100 prospect? That is one of the most ridiculous things that I have ever read on this website.
Just wow
thecoffinnail
So Machado who plays a position of need and is having a way better season went to a contending team and brought back a mid 70’s ranked prospect. You think Harper who plays a position no one needs and is having a decent but not great season is going to bring back a better prospect? And you call me ridiculous? You are in love with the Harper hype machine and need to wake up to reality.
Dorothy_Mantooth
John,
He is absolutely right! If Washington is lucky, they get a #90-99 rated MLB prospect at the most for Harper and that is only if Washington agrees to pay a portion of his remaining salary. While Harper is a beast; you only get him for 2 months and in his worst offensive year of his career. If Washington wants to salary dump him then they will be lucky to get 2 mid-level prospects with upside. It’s just the way baseball works my friend. If Harper had 1-2 years left on his deal then you can start laughing about that post!
johnrealtime
I was in agreement with you on basically everything you said in your first post, other than the part about him not bringing back a top 100 prospect. I am a cubs fan who does not want anything to do with harper, and I think he is overrated. But I think he is a good player and that he would bring back a top 100 prospect. He is having a horrible year by his standards yet has a 841 ops. i think he’ll get hot before the year is over and be in the middle of his april and the rest of the year
Knowthemarket
You keep ignoring the reasoning that keeps getting restated to you, John. Machado got one top 100 prospect that wasn’t close close to the top 50. How is it you think Harper who has provided less value will get a similar level prospect return as Machado?
KnicksFanCavsFan
You guys are maddening. I for one absolutely laughed at the idea of Harper or Machado getting a $300 mil + deal because neither had been consistent in their careers. That being said, the idea that a guy on pace to hit 35+ hrs, draw 120 walks with a obp around.360 couldn’t net a top 100 is laughable.
Also, you guys gotta take the top 100 lists with a grain of salt. There some guys on those lists that have never played above low A and I’ll bet they’ll be guys just drafted who haven’t played on there too. Today’s top 100-150 guy will be tomorrow’s top 1-100 guy.
A guy like Harper can get hot and carry a team for a month. Teams will pay up.
JoeyPankake
The difference is that Machado is actually having a good season while Harper is below replacement level. Machado is consistent, while Harper is the antithesis of consistency.
majorflaw
“ . . . while Harper is below replacement level.”
Not true. As of last night Harper had .2 WAR this year, which means he has been above replacement level. Not by a lot, but still above.
anthonyd4412
But he’s not nearly good as advertised. He’s had 1 1/2 seasons where he reached his potential.
kicker1
They are 5 games out and the next 4 series they have are vs struggling brewers, mets, marlins and reds. They can definitely make a run here
Ricky Taylor
Why Hamel? So you can get back to .500
uncle1sock
Roark has a 2.98 career 2nd half era, nothing to see here

Back back back back they changed their mind they have not talked to the Rangers

The way he’s pitching the rangers will be lucky to get a bag of peanuts and a bucket of balls. Dude’s been complete trash.

Sometimes I feel sorry for the MLBTR staff for having to relay all these “stories” perpetuated by the baseball media. This story was shot down in a mere 12 minutes and yet no one is held accountable for the bogus initial report. It’s impossible to say who’s incorrect here, Morosi or Janes, but I’m so tired of how media types turn speculation into a story. Someone is either misinformed or just flat out lying. Who’s wrong? And will they publicly redact their incorrect report? Probably not.
I get this site is just a blog that collects stuff from across the web and re-posts it for clicks. But on these factoids that are just lazily thrown out there, I feel bad for whoever has post the updates which make the initial post basically a popcorn fart.
MLBTR has some of the best insights on rosters, etc and I’ll keep coming back every day. But the 12 minute contradiction period on this story bugs me. Keep up the good work guys.

Please Atlanta do NOT trade for Hamels.

I think it’s going to take a 10 ten prospect, I want riley from the braves

You do realize that the majority of Atlanta’s top 20 is better than most team’s top 10 simply because of their depth of you prospect talent. All top 10s are not created equal.

Players like Hamels should never be written off completely. When I see a pitcher with the history of Hamels being called “washed up” and “trash” I think back a few years and remember Brandon McCarthy. In 2014 he had an ERA over 5 pitching in Arizona when he was traded to the Yankees for Vidal Nuno (a potential 5th starter). He pitched to a 2.89 ERA the second half and basically became the de-facto ace. Almost pitching the Yankees to the post season.

I think of Verlander a few years ago. I even thought he was on the downswing

Why is the pitcher Dan Jennings tagged in this article ?

Slowest moving trade deadline ever. I honestly think we might of seen the 2 real impact trades already d find

There’s still 8 days to the deadline!

Don’t trade for Hamels Braves. Bring and keep up Fried and give him a legit shot. Go get relief pitching!!

Gary Sanchez doesn’t hit , can’t catch and doesn’t hustle. Send him to the minors .

Your on the wrong article I think
xabial
It indirectly relates to Yanks after title change. “Latest on Cole Hamels” Yanks in on Hamels. Though Nationals are the rumored team (they say) I’m more inclined to believe Morosi, since he wrote an article instead of a Twitter link. BTW…
Statcast on Gary Sanchez’s game-ending, no-hustle groundout: Home-to-1st time: 5.39 seconds —His season averages on max-effort runs are a 4.53-second home-to-1st mobile.twitter.com/_dadler/status/1021589373995896…
If he ran just a tad harder, game would have been a 7-7 tie. Instead it was 7-6 loss.

I think this gif (a gif is a short video on replay) is evident of his lack of effort, unless you’re wearing pinstriped-colored lens.
To his defense, he may have pulled a groin, aggravated groin injury that made him miss time earlier. That is what they are saying.
iverbure
Rangers fans are in for a rude awakening if they think any team is giving them a prospect they’ve heard of despite what most of them said on here most of the year. Hamels is due effectively 15 mil the rest of the season. 9 mil this year 6 mil buyout next year. Nobody and I mean nobody is interested in picking that tab up. Happ is a much much better alternative if you need a lefty starter.
baseballhobo
Hamels will not be traded before the July 31st deadline unless he throws a 2 hit shutout this weekend. The Rangers need to hope he pitches better in August.
DannyQ3913
Hamels and Diekman to Phillies
nfunk115
sure he’s not the ace he once was, but considering he’s playing for Texas can’t expect too much. Maybe a change of scenery is exactly what he needs. He’d look good in pinstripes for sure.
1977Odualum
Hard to believe that Bosox piked up Evoldi, Yanks get Britton, Dodgers get Machato and Not even a good rumor about Nats improving themselves while every other contender does. Hopefully it’s because Washington writers are not able to discover info or the Nats are throwing in the towel
