Here are Thursday’s minor moves from around the game…
- Left-hander Tim Collins cleared waivers and has been assigned outright to Triple-A Syracuse by the Nationals organization, reports Chelsea Janes of the Washington Post (Twitter link). The southpaw had enough service time to reject the assignment in favor of free agency, but Janes adds that Collins will indeed go to Syracuse. The 28-year-old returned to the Majors for the first time since 2014 this season, having missed significant time due to a pair of Tommy John surgeries. He posted a 2.77 ERA that looks strong at first glance but was accompanied by 14 hits allowed and six walks against just eight strikeouts through 13 innings.
- The Reds’ Rookie-level affiliate announced today that lefty Max Wotell has been released by the organization. The 21-year-old Wotell was traded alongside Dilson Herrera from the Mets to the Reds in exchange for Jay Bruce back in 2016, but his control evaporated immediately upon being dealt to the Reds. At the time of the swap, Wotell had a 3.94 ERA with a respectable 31-to-12 K/BB ratio in 29 2/3 innings in Rookie ball. He walked seven batters in six innings to close out that season with the Reds, and the following year, he walked 14 batters in just 17 1/3 innings between two levels. This season, Wotell had a combined 10.45 ERA with 17 walks against 11 strikeouts in 10 1/3 innings between A-ball and Rookie ball.

I remember arguing on here with people who hated the Bruce trade from the Mets side, and I’m not even a Bruce fan but it was a steal for the Mets. Dilson had bust written all over him.

Dilson has dealt with a ton of injuries, but is currently having a very good season in AAA. Reds have a lot of depth at middle infield at the moment.
sampsonite168
1/3 of his at bats this season have come in A ball. That’s a single A.
Four straight seasons in AAA on perennial loser teams and he can’t crack the roster. He’s not good. At all.
progers2622
In 50 games in AAA this year Dilson is slashing 297/367/485 with 7Hr and 27Rbi also 10 doubles. And that’s just AAA so not a bad year. So that’s AAA not A has 85 A at bats. So get your numbers correct sampsonite

Not to mention, he’s also currently blocked by Scooter Gennet whose having an unreal, awesome season. Then, he’s blocked at SS by Peraza who has been steadily making strides offensively, and he’s looking like a solid regular at SS for the Reds..
Even if Herrera can play 3rd, he would still be blocked by Suarez, whose a beast in his own right..
Really, it is just a bad team to be on for Herrera, so maybe he’ll get traded and finally get his shot to show what he’s really got at the big league level..
sampsonite168
I mentioned none of his numbers. So how could my numbers be wrong if there were no numbers mentioned? Learn how to read please.
stricke3
Wrong. Read the posts providing actual facts about Herrera.
JBSully
…you mentioned 1/3 of his at-bats. Oh! And how many seasons at AAA, what four? All of which were actual numbers lol.

Maybe Max has Thoracic Outlet Syndrome?
Strauss
Typical trade by the Reds. Another failure
dhud
Suarez Peraza Duvall Schebler Castillo DeSclafani Harvey
All acquired via trade. All failures

beanballer224
Did your lobotomy hurt? Suarez is having an All Star season and was traded for Alfredo Simon who’s no longer in baseball. Duvall was in a trade for Mike Leake who was FA. Disco was traded for May Lagos, who is no longer in bb. Harvey for Mez wasn’t even a bad trade.
bravesfan88
Pretty sure DHud was being sarcastic, in response to Strauss, when he mentioned all those players being acquired in failed trades…
Hindsight is indeed 20/20, but everyone knows the Simon trade was just brutal for the Orioles…It was no simple burglary..I would say it was more like aggrivated burglary with intent to harm…lol

^this guy gets it

Suarez is a stud, and they pretty much stole him from Detroit. But to play devil’s advocate, Peraza is decent but basically a utility guy, Castillo has huge upside but isn’t a finished product, DeSclafani is really good but hasn’t stayed healthy much, and Harvey is a rental.
The Reds don’t get enough credit for getting some of the guys they’ve gotten, but they also get a bad rap because they haven’t maximized their rebuild since they either didn’t get much for most of their marketable players or held onto them for way too long.
redsraiderspurs44
If you’re going to play devil’s advocate then get your facts straight. Peraza is doing a good job of establishing himself as a solid and consistent SS. Moreover, he was acquired with Schebler and Dixon for Frazier who they had no chance of resigning. So they turned him into two starters and a bench guy. Additionally Castillo along with Brice who is bullpen depth at AAA were acquired by flipping Dan Straily a waiver claim. I would suggest those moves are better than what you imply.

You ignored the other points I made. They held onto Chapman for too long and then were forced into taking a lesser deal from the Yankees after his incident, they signed Bailey to an extension that looked bad from day one, the package they got for Cueto didn’t amount to much, they held onto Cozart and didn’t trade him when he had value then let him walk, they held onto Bruce for too long, and they probably did the same thing with Billy but it’s too soon to tell for sure.
You listed some good moves that they’ve made, and the original comment that I replied to listed some others. They’ve made some good trades. But the reason the Reds are viewed as botching their rebuild is because they don’t have enough to show for all that they lost in trades.
progers2622
Or you can argue the point that they should of held onto Chapman a little longer.

They didn’t hold on to Chapman long enough. I believe, with confidence, that the owner Castellini forced Jocketty’s hand on that trade. I think Castellini judged (quite poorly) that the business side would be hurt have a domestic violence player (Chapman) on his team. Fans don’t give a rats’ behind if a player shoots up his garage. His neighbors care for sure, but fans won’t change their mind on buying a ticket or watching a game because a player may get suspended for 50 games in the future.
They sold for pennnies on the dollar and then Cashman rubbed salt in the wounds of Reds fans by flipping Chapman for Gleybar Torres (thankfully at least he pissed on the Cubs fans in the process, even if they won a WS, they lost that trade in a big way).
I just wish our GM/owner had been shrewd enough to trade Chapman for Torres and he was raking at SS for us now (we’d probably have him stuck in AA for another two years though).

Again look at the facts. Some trades have worked fairly well. Frazier, Simon, Straily, Leake, Mesaraco! Several have not. Cueto, maybe Bruce!
FromTheCheapSeats
Why does Scott Schebler get left out of all this “astute analysis”? His OPS this year is .829.
Todd Frazier’s career high? .829 – all the way back in 2012. What’s he done since the Reds dealt him? 6 teams In 4 years.
ovp66223
If only the Reds had dealt him after that HR derby win, when he was hitting near .300 and leading NL in homers…sigh. That darn all-star game and a moron (from a baseball perspective) owner in Castellini. He forced a Chapman trade when his value was at a low (suspension looming) and forced GM to hold on to Frazier and others that July due to them hosting the all-star game. All stupid moves and I am sure it was Castellini, who needs to STOP any input into day-to-day operations. Just name the budget and let the GM and assistants figure out best moves for the present and future. Sigh.
