You didn’t need to check our ranking of the 75 top trade deadline candidates to know that (former?) Orioles star Manny Machado was the best rental player on the market this summer. He’s an immensely talented, mid-prime player, the likes of which are rarely seen on the block this time of year.
Admittedly, though, deciding how to fill in that list behind Machado was not easy. The most valuable remaining potential trade candidates are those who come with future contract rights, making them less than likely to end up on the move. As for the remaining rental players, let’s just say they all have some demerits. Given the difficulties I had in deciding just how to rank the next-best players who’ll be dealt for only a few months of service, I thought it would be interesting to pose the same basic dilemma I faced to the MLBTR readership.
Note that I’m including Cole Hamels ($6MM buyout on a $20MM club option), Mike Moustakas ($1MM buyout on $15MM mutual option), and Joakim Soria ($1MM buyout on $10MM mutual option) in the poll despite the fact that all come with some future contractual considerations. While not technically rentals, these players will mostly be treated that way by the market. The mutual options are quite unlikely to come into play, in particular. While the Hamels situation is more complicated, it seems to me he should be considered alongside these other starting pitching options.
If you want my thoughts on the players in question, check out the blurbs in the rankings post linked to above. Which do you think is the best asset from this group? (Response order randomized. Link for app users.)

Kind of surprising Jose Iglesias doesn’t at least make the list. He’s a solid defender and his bat is coming around this year.
dewman2722
Also a little surprised Bryce Harper’s name hasn’t at least come up in rumors. The Nationals are 5.5 games out of the division and 5 games back in the wild card. They would be foolish not to at least consider dealing Harper if they have a bad week and a half before the deadline.
hiflew
5.5 out with 10 weeks to go is not really that much. You only have to make up about one game every two weeks. Not to mention that they still have more than enough games remaining with the Braves and Phillies to make up that ground much more quickly.

I am a die hard Nats fan and wouldn’t care if the Nats trade Harper for a great deal for the Nats future. I have munch confidence in Soto, Eaton, Taylor, Goodwin, Robles and even Turner if they wanted to put him back in the outfield. They have a very good outfield that does not need a $35M contract. Thoughts?
imgman09
I’m not a Nats fan but I’m a Basball Fan and I agree but his Stock is down he’s hitting 212 and others deserved his starting spot in the ASG.Everybody will be watching the rest of the way to see if he gets better? He is young and Has tons of talent but it’s what you’ve done lately that gets big Money
indiansfan44
The only way I see Harper even being discussed in trade talks is if the National come out of the break horrible and end up like 10 or 12 games back at the deadline. Even then after his derby performance and speech as well as the crowd reaction to him the whole night it would still be a tough sell to the fan base. It’s not like Baltimore’s situation where they need a total rebuild and have no chance at resigning after the season.
stansfield123
The list isn’t based on anyone’s opinion on what teams “should” be doing, it’s based on what they ARE doing. The Nats clearly aren’t selling.
Bennybosox
If they slide back 3-5 more games AND the Phillies & Braves make moves (likely) they should put some feelers out. The question then becomes can they get more value for him at the deadline than what a compensatory draft pick brings them for losing him to free agency? I’d assume so. He’s not gonna command the type of haul Machado got, and after the very down start to the 2018 season, a team should theoretically be getting the very best version of Harper as he heads into his final 2 months (and hopefully postseason) before entering free-agency looking for a record breaking deal. Plus, it would allow Washington to kind of get out from under the pressure of feeling like they need to make an attempt to sign him after the season. I think based on what they do coming out of the break that Harper will very much be in play at the deadline
Jeff Todd
He’s on the list of 75 that I linked to. He’s carrying a .677 OPS and there are several other, similar glove-first players so I don’t really think he’s going to be a major asset.
davidn17
He didn’t make the list because he sucks
dewman2722
Oh, ok. Thanks for clearing that up for me.
jorge78
LOL!
dimitrios in la
He will get a very nice return.
dimitrios in la
Zach Britton.
GarryHarris
I would also put Nicholas Castellanos on the list. I would still vote Nathan Eovaldi however.
redsfan48
Castellanos is not a rental. He’s a free agent after next season.
petfoodfella
Some rentals are longer than others? 😀
mgrap84
Coming from an Oriole fan, Britton can easily help any contending teams bullpen. With Miller not able to stay healthy, Cleveland should jump all over getting him. I don’t think they will have to give up that much to get him because he isnt Chapman or Miller but he is consistent and had one of the nastiest sinkers in the game.
kenneth cole
THANK YOU. Cleveland NEEDS Britton because I don’t think they want to deal a hefty price for Brad Hand.
mgrap84
I think Britton is better then Hand and will come at a cheaper price. I think the main thing people might be worried about with Britton is can he stay healthy after his injury. It took him a few games but i feel her is back to being a dominant force again. Anyone who thought he was done for after that injury and had a rough couple outings obviously doesn’t watch enough to know what they are talking about.

“had one of the nastiest sinkers in the game”
Hmmmmmm……
“had”
dimitrios in la
When it is working, which it has been, it’s the best pitch in the game.
mgrap84
I typed has but stupid auto-correct changed it. No doubt he HAS the nastiest. Ive had the chance to see it for years.
wanderguzman
None the are all damaged goods, and won’t improve any contender team, maybe Britton and Familia (if available)
TeddyBallgameYazJimEd
Boston needs some upgrades/depth in the bullpen.. as of right now Familia is hands down a better choice than Britton.. in fact his value is much greater than most of the starters or everyday players on the list as he is capable of impacting the game multiple times per week
Priggs89
And Soria has been better than both of them…
hojostache
It seems like clubs trust him least (of the 3), but I think a team like CLE will steal him and he’ll be a great add. I want Familia to go there bc CLE has a solid system and needs some SERIOUS help in the pen. 29th or 30th in the league for ERA.
nutbunnies
I guess Happ for the quantity of production you’d be receiving, but it only takes one formerly great player running into a lucky 2 months to make everyone look dumb
pustule bosey
the best rental isn’t on this list, it is hunter pence. really someone should take hunter pence… can someone please take hunter pence, please?
slowcurve
LOL. It’s a sad time for baseball that Pence is on the down slide of his career. It was fun while it lasted. #hunterpenceeatsindividuallywrappedgrapes
pustule bosey
it really is, he was great before the broken arm and never came back after that, now he is in an albatross of a contract that keeps the giants out of the market. At least the pablo contract is hung on the sox and they still get pablo who is actually producing right now but minus the pence contract the giants could actually make some moves without worrying about the tax threshold.
c1234
I’m confused is Manny Machado officially a dodger right now??
Adam6710
Not officially, but regardless of if he is or isn’t, Machado is far and away the best rental player this season, and there is no clear #2. Hence this article/poll/discussion.
woodstock005
Best rental players or salary dumping same
Niekro
Is Cole Hamels hard contact percentage up this year or is he just having bad luck with HR’s?
His FIP is so high but he is actually missing bats maybe has something to do with the higher walks he is pitching with less confidence, might be a match made for Oakland bigger stadium he can attack more in.
mikeyst13
If available (and sounds like he should be) I’ll take Eduardo Escobar over most of these guys. Especially if Moose and Asdrubal are the only other IF options.
Jeff Todd
We put the Twins guys together on the top 75 list and held them down a bit, just since they are probably not quite ready to pull the trigger on trades and could still hold if there’s a big swing in the next couple weeks. Before Steve suggested that, I had Escobar and Dozier listed with ‘Drubal. Certainly an argument to be made that they are the two best infielders available.
mikeyst13
I get that. And I know the Twins had this little hot streak and made that great run last year, but honestly they are still 7.5 back of a Cleveland team that should be far superior on paper and is probably going to make some moves and a wild card is probably out of the question. Still think it makes more sense for them to sell off those expiring contracts as quickly as possible before teams (Brewers who may be in a little bit of panic mode at middle IF?) start to look elsewhere if they decide to hold for a couple weeks.
dust44
Next guy to go is Moustakas to the Red Sox… that’s my guess. Give Devers a few extra AAA at bats and bring him up in Sept. btw this is coming from a Yankees fan… I also see the Yankees getting either Britton or Hand. And the Tribe getting the other one. I could also see the Brewers getting a pitcher of some sort pretty quickly.
I would like to c the Yankees get Fulmer or deGroom but I don’t think they give up the prospect hull to get either
MetsYankeesRedSox
Any relation to deBride?
daved
No, but he is DeBestman
twentyforty
Now all Brewers fans can go back to thinking their prospect pipeline is loaded with difference makers (it’s not), and claim they didn’t want to gut the farm for a rental anyway. From a franchise that still displays wild card “flags”.
mikeyst13
Most of us know exactly where we sit and outside of Hiura would have been glad to deal most anyone in the system. We know that most of the pitchers that guys were saying should be “untouchable” projects as more middle for the rotation guys. Yes, there are a few Brewer fans on this site that are quite a bit off the wall, but every team has those. But thanks for grouping us all together.
mick
Not a matter of not being “loaded with difference makers” and more of a Burnes, Peralta, and Hiura have a real shot at being difference makers so parting with them would be foolish. I don’t think that a package without one of those 3 would have been enough, and giving up one of those 3 for a rental has the potential to be really, really dumb. I don’t think any Brewers fan who pays attention to the Brewers minors thinks their system is chalked full of All-Stars. Outside of the previously mentioned 3 there isn’t much until Low A. If those 3 end up being the studs they have the potential to be they will provide a ton of firepower at a low cost. Even if Peralta and Burnes end up as #3 starters it still provides the Brewers with cost controlled young talent while their window is open and there really isn’t much doubt that Hiura is going to rake. He isn’t Milwaukee’s starting 2nd baseman because he isn’t ready with the glove, not because he can’t hit.
phnxdark23
Would have initially said Ramos before this most recent injury, but now my vote goes to Eovaldi. Under- or over-rated depending on who you talk to, he reminds me a bit of the Shark – typically bad ERA, but good “stuff” and good peripheral numbers. This vote is less about how good he is, but more about how thin the SP market is and how much of a game changer a weak SP3 could be in this year’s market. Almost every single contender could use a veteran SP, and I could see Eovaldi going to a team that really needs just a little help to get the edge in the NL – Dodgers, Brewers, Braves, even Nats maybe. If he’s healthy, he can upgrade any of those rotations at the back end.
phnxdark23
To be clear – my vote was for the best acquisition, not necessarily the best player. Britton and Moose are obviously better talents than Eovaldi, but I don’t see an average 3B or recovering RP changing a team’s overall outlook the same way a solid veteran starter would.
Phillies2017
I’d say Ross based on league average results and $1.75m salary. Less than $1m left on it.
#Fantasygeekland
It isn’t often you see a rental as good as Machado available, but I feel like the rest of the class is weaker than usual.
holecamels35
I’d say Britton, he’s starting to come on strong and many teams could use one more dominant late inning reliever, especially in the playoffs.
Most of the starters will just be 4-5 types who probably won’t see a start for any playoff teams.
stansfield123
Wilson Ramos and Familia are the only ones really worth anything significant, on that list. I imagine Ramos is going to fetch a nice ransom from the Nats (unless they go all out for Realmuto), and Familia’s gonna have a lot of suitors.
The other position players are okay, but they’re unlikely to be acquired to start on a contending team. Same for the relievers: they won’t be slotted in to take care of impact innings, except maybe on the Indians…but that just shows how bad the Indians bullpen is, it doesn’t mean these players are worth what a high impact reliever is usually worth.
As for the five starters, they shouldn’t even be on there. They’ve all been hovering around replacement level…which makes Hamels worth less than the money he is owed, and the others, next to nothing.
hojostache
Player 1: 17 Saves, 2.88 ERA, 134 ERA+, 2.53 FIP, 1.230WHIP, 0.2HR/9, 3.1BB/9, 9.5K/9. ($7.925m)
Player 2: 4 Saves, 3.68 ERA, 114 ERA+, 4.30 FIP, 1.364WHIP, 0.6HR/9, 5.5BB/9, 8k/9 ($12m)
Player 3: 14 Saves, 2.75ERA, 149 ERA+, 2.20FIP, 1.167 WHIP, 0.5HR/9, 2.3BB/9, 11.3k/9 ($9m)
All three players are rentals….who would you want?
hojostache
Familia
Britton
Soria
Priggs89
Player 3 pretty easily
hojostache
Back-end starters are few to non-existent this year. Happ has gotten bombed lately. Hamels hasn’t looked good AND he is $$$. Heck…I’d probably take Edwin Jackson over either of them and the dude must be mid 40’s by now. I’m only slightly kidding about Edwin.
simmy886
The best remaining rental, imho, is not on your list. Josh Donaldson. Totally health dependent but the latest reports are positive.
