Mariners catcher Mike Marjama has retired, according to a team announcement (h/t Ryan Divish of the Seattle Times, on Twitter). That leaves the team with three openings on its 40-man roster.
Marjama, who’ll turn 29 later this month, was originally a 23rd-round pick in the 2011 draft. He overcame the odds to make it to the big leagues, seeing action in 15 MLB contests over the past two seasons. In his 173 plate appearances this year at Triple-A, he had produced a .247/.302/.424 batting line.
Marjama is wrapping up his playing career in order to pursue a new job with the National Eating Disorders Association, per the announcement. It seems that his pursuit of this particular line of work relates to his own prior struggles with eating disorders, as MLB.com’s Greg Johns notes on Twitter. We at MLBTR certainly wish him the best of luck in this worthwhile endeavor.

not trying to be rude but… who?? honestly never heard of this dude. good luck tho!
houkenflouken
For good reason I suppose, he hasn’t played too much in the bigs and is a more defensive minded catcher.
Kraycik
I thought it was Mike Marijuana who was retiring. Man was I wrong
Cubbie Steve
You are not the only one. I’m still reading it as saying that…
em650r
Marijuana with a eating disorder lol

I’m sure it’s a great feeling once you make the difficult decision to retire, to see it posted about on MLBTR and scroll down to the comments and see some jagoff post a big who?? It says right there in the post who.

Some people take pride in ignorance.
dugdog83
Ooohhh he’s one bad Marjama
ckln88
If you’re not big on the minors, especially the mariners, then you won’t have known him.
acarneglia
Never seen Mike play, but I’ve read about him a few times. Hope he enjoys his life after baseball, and does great work with such an important thing in our society.

Hey, got an MLB hit and an MLB home run, can ask much more than that in an MLB career.
Wish him the best.
MetsYankeesRedSox
Live in Maine and also never heard of him. But he made it to the bigs…every kids dream who plays baseball. I had a cousin with anorexia who died in her 20s. Best of luck to Mike and make a difference!

Good for him
We need all the help we can get out here with mental illness awareness. All the power to you bro! Best of luck!

Good Story, should have a good time at his next job

“he had produced a .247/.302/.424 batting line.”
Her ya go Tim…one of your writers said it with an example you were looking for. Cant wait to hear your approach.
As I said, .247 a decent mark. Haha
Jeff Todd
Seriously? I’m not offering any commentary by using that phrasing. Those are simply the batting numbers that he produced, is all. It’s a very meh batting line, though not distinctly poor for a catcher.
You can produce good or bad or average numbers. I recognize there’s also a stand-alone phrase, “produced,” that implies excellence. But I didn’t use it that way here.

People seem to like nitpicking way too much sometimes I guess
Jeff Todd
I don’t mind nit-picking that much when it’s accurate.
NotaGM
Accurate enough, when it’s qouted. So Albert Pujos is having a standup year???
mrnatewalter
You said, “Albert Pujols is having a standup year”
See, I can quote you and completely miss all the nuance and context in which you’re writing from.
That you quoted him doesn’t make you accurate.

Great job!!! Mr. Good Will Hunting.
Look geppetto i’m a big boy.

Can you please just leave this site

Naw…I’ll stick around since you all like reading/responding.

Not poor for a catcher in today’s market.
nsmith12641
I agree, i don’t know why there’s so much hate about the way the article is written. Like you said in context a .247 average is decent for a catcher. Also most rod the time I see a lot of hate based off the comment decent just based off of batting average. The realize which some other commenters may not realize is that you are referencing the triple slash line. Keep up the good work!
NotaGM
Yes, that’s why Charles Johnson is considered a HOF haha
Cam
Wouldn’t worry about this guy – seems to be trolling routinely.
whereslou
Here it’s the typical more than all you shmucks did.
He made it out of ST with the Ms then when Zunino got hurt they called up Freitas and he outperformed him. He got sent down and I am sure he knew that was the end for him. He now is going on to do some very worthwhile work.
So some of you guys joke about what you couldn’t do off a pitching machine if you didn’t know if a fast ball curve or slider was coming. Good luck Mike glad to have you in the org and hope you have success in your new endeavor.
Phil253
Lou I’d say the jokers and well wishers are an even 5/5. Relax buddy, don’t be so defensive.
Best of luck to Mike and maybe he’ll find the time to couch or who knows maybe he’ll find the love for the game again? Either way much respect.
Phil253
I got “coach” autocorrected to “couch” LOL

Very well said

For those who didn’t see him play, he was actually thought to have more offensive potential than defensive. He was athletic and ran well. Besides Freitas outperforming him, the addition of Chris Herrmann made it even more difficult for Marjama to get back up to the bigs. He was this close to making decent money consistently. Then, it went away quickly. With this career change hopefully he can continue to make a difference, while also finding financial security.
CowboysoldierFTW
Good luck. Any work you do to help with mental illness makes you q HOF in my book.
nentwigs
At least he didn’t use “slashed”.
bluejays92
Good for him. Some things are more important than sports and I hope he enjoys his new work and helps some people out. And at the end of the day he’ll always still be able to say that he made it to the show.

How is it that *this* post generated conflict in the comment section?
