Matt Harvey Remaining With Reds

By Tim Dierkes | July 31, 2018 at 1:00pm CDT

Matt Harvey will be staying with the Reds despite a flurry of trade discussions, tweets ESPN’s Jerry Crasnick.  In my opinion, Harvey remains a candidate to be traded in August.

Earlier Updates:

  • The Giants have “entered the fray” for Harvey, tweets Jon Heyman of Fancred.  MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand finds the Giants unlikely for Harvey, however.
  • Reds beat writer Bobby Nightengale Jr., reporting for the Cincinnati Enquirer, would be surprised if Harvey isn’t traded today.  Nightengale tweets that the Brewers and Braves have shown interest.  He’s backed up by his father, Bob Nightengale of USA Today, who says the Braves have been Harvey’s most aggressive suitor.  Nightengale Sr. also adds that the Chris Archer trade talks are slowing down the Harvey discussions, suggesting Harvey is a Plan B for some Archer suitors.
  • On the other hand, Jon Heyman of Fancred says Harvey is not likely for the Braves, while the Brewers and Cubs are “among the main teams in the mix.”  Similarly, David O’Brien of The Athletic hears the Braves are not in on Harvey.  Harvey wouldn’t seem to have an opening in the Cubs’ rotation, unless perhaps Yu Darvish’s injury issues persist and Mike Montgomery is moved back to the bullpen.  ESPN’s Jerry Crasnick hears the same interested parties as Heyman, regarding the Brewers and Cubs.

Please Alex No!!!!!!!! The last thing the braves need is a washed up pitcher with an ego twice as big as his best fastball. Won’t accept anything other than a starter position, and pays more attention to the radar gun reading than the batter he’s facing. No thank you!

3.82 ERA over last 7 outings with a new team, new coaches, etc. say otherwise. Plenty of starting pitchers that haven’t been as effective over last 7. Stil, it’s the trade deadline. Backup catchers get their own thread today.

I remember a pitcher in 1999-2001 going 17-17 with a 5.08 ERA and also in 2004 went 8-8 with a 4.20 ERA. Looks like “washed up” stats until Roy Halladay changed his throwing motion a few degrees. You know the rest.

Excuse me all to Hades? As a Reds fan, I would love for the Reds to give him a two year contract. He’s ten times better than Bailey or any one else on the roster. If they just give him away like they did Duvall this is one Reds fan that will give up on them after 50 years

Giving away Matt Harvey is what would make you give up on the Reds after 50 years? He’s a #4 or 5 starter that they basically gave up nothing for 2 months ago.

Worst of the worst huh? So when they scouted suerez, scooter, schebler, Peraza, Senzel makes them the worst. The reds are going for 500 baseball after the worst start prob ever lol. Harvey cost to much let him go. Duvall was trades for three players how did they give him away. Duvall is average defender not fast and a 200 hitter why would you want that?

Duvall happens to have been a gold glove finalist so don’t give me crap about him being an average defender.
His home run total and rbis are heads above what we got for him. Senzel will never make a big league roster because he can’t stay off the disabled list! Peraza and Herrera will never be the duo that our “scouts” proclaimed them to be. Cody Reed can’t pitch his way out of a paper bag. He was what 1 – 12 or so when he was up? Finnegan, another Homer. Lamb, shall I continue? This front office sucks since Castellini bought them.

Bye Felicia! You really are on the nuts of a 200 hitter wow. You have no idea what prospect will do when they haven’t been given a chance. Gold glove what finalists. lol when at double a. The reds traded for two pitchers and and outfielder so unless somehow pitches are now crushing hr that i didn’t know about them your comments are mute. Peraza is hitting above 300 guess they got that one wrong hmm.. dilson didn’t he have a walk off the other day yes he did. Cody reed will be in the bullpen next year and still young. Tell me again what scouts your talking about that are the worst. Once again suerez that was traded is a future mvp. Peraza is hitting over 300 this year and is doing a good job on d. Senzel rose through the ranks fast and will be up next year. If you want duvall jay Bruce bill ham type of players you should be a triple a fan. If not shut up when you so don’t know what your talking about

So I’m crazy for throwing facts at you lol. You say Peraza is not going to be any good. He is hitting over 300. How many times do I have to say that. Dilson hit a walk off just the other day. What else do you want. Duvall has been to one all star game that he prob shouldn’t have been to. He is hitting right at 200 this year with 15 hrs. You want to keep him. That’s a laugh. Have you not watched the reds. Suerez is dang good and ohh he was an all star this year that according to you the worst front office ever acquired. They also acquired scooter who again you think the scouts for the reds are terrible. I wonder who watches these guys before the fo pulls the trigger? Jesse Winker is a way better hitter than duvall younger too. Schebler, Taylor trammel, maybe Senzel. Why do they need duval. What did you really think they could get for him a number 1 or 2 lmao. With due respect to all players on the refs Votto is prob the only player worth that kind of haul. You can sit at home thinking how you use to be a reds fan when they go to the playoffs next year with what you think is a terrible front office and the worst scouts. You make all other reds fans wish fans like you rooted for the cards

Exactly–I don’t think anyone is looking for him to start game one of the World Series or even be on a playoff roster. He should cost next to nothing. Since the Cubs and Brewers are mentioned above—it would give the Brewers another experienced arm and for the Cubs possibly allow them to move Montgomery back to the pen to reduce the load on him and allow them to strengthen their pen…or at least, deepen. No cost—no big deal if someone nabs them.

And remember–with Hand going to the Indians, Eovaldi to the Red Sox, the guys to the Yankees, Machado to the Dodgers, Moose to the Brewers, Hamels to Cubs—-I’m pretty comfortable in saying that AT LEAST five of those deals won’t turn into a World Series championship. You really never know who will really help.

Having watched many of his games with the Reds, I always felt uneasy with him on the mound. He left a lot of fastballs over the plate and I thought he could have been rocked in every outing. That being said, he definitely improved a bit. I want him to be flipped for a prospect rather than kept for nothing.

As a Reds fan, I find this stupid and extremely disappointing. The whole point in acquiring him was rehabbing his value (which he did) and then flipping him at the deadline. Holding onto him does the team no good. In fact, it blocks guys like Stephenson from getting a spot in the rotation. Makes no sense at all

Guys like Stephenson are blocking guys like Stephenson from getting a spot in the rotation. No one can claim that the guys in AAA in Cincy like Stephenson, Reed, and Finnegan have never gotten a chance. They just didn’t do the job when they got their multiple chances.

That being said, holding Harvey makes no sense unless you are planning on retaining him after this season. That might not be a bad idea if the price is right.

No way will he sign a cheap three year deal after this season, nor should the Reds do it. Harvey’s agent is Scott Boras and he just doesn’t do cheap deals. Harvey is destined to sign a one year deal to try and rehab his reputation further.. And committing to Harvey for 3 years at this point would just be stupid on the Reds’ part.

I really hope someone claims him in August and either the reds work out a trade or they just let him walk

Even at AAA Stephenson still tends to give up too many homers even with as well as he pitched the last month or two. That being said he still needs another opportunity. However I don’t think they should stop trying to win just to see what they have. Too bad Senzel got hurt with Duvall gone and Winker out for the season he could either be at second o in left with Gennett at the other position. Oh well.
