The Mariners announced today that they have outrighted reliever Mike Morin. That move helped clear the way for two promotions, with first baseman Dan Vogelbach and outfielder John Andreoli joining the active roster.
This is the second time Morin has been bumped from the Seattle 40-man roster this season. The 27-year-old righty has recorded six strikeouts against one walk in his four MLB innings this year but has also allowed three earned runs on six hits.
Morin turned in a strong rookie showing back in 2014 with the Angels. (The Halos organization drafted him and promoted him to the majors while their front office was run by current Seattle GM Jerry Dipoto.) Since then, however, Morin has struggled to find success despite generally sporting promising peripherals. Over his career, Morin carries a 4.66 ERA but a 3.32 FIP, 3.89 xFIP, and 3.42 SIERA.

Morin’s 2015 season still baffles me. Such strong peripheral stats for such poor bottom line results.

I was curious what you meant so I looked at his numbers that year and you’re right…and it’s not like it was a small sample size or anything either

He came off the DL and got hammered

There were also times where he didn’t get any outs and his era ballooned up as a result

I imagine it boils down to being predictable.
You can see that when he’s behind in the count he generally gets torched. He only has the one plus pitch; his change. If hitters have an idea when to expect it they can adjust accordingly.
In 2015 hitters punished him most often when runners were on (only 44% strand rate with batters sitting at .378 wOBA when on 1st and .408 wOBA with RISP) and they had little difficulty placing the ball (.344 BAbip overall.) It was consistently too, as only 1 month did he have an ERA under 6.0 (and that was still pretty high at 4.38 in September)
Thing is, he had a .249 wOBA against when the bases were empty. With such a dramatic difference between the two situations, predictable when under pressure seems the most logical explanation

You’re on point Sir.

He lives with his change and when guys guess right and wait on it, they hit it a long way. I liked watching him pitch when he was on his game.

Wouldnt be surprised if the Royals try to bring him back. He’s a KC guy and he wasnt completely lousy his first time around with the Royals.
