The Indians have claimed outfielder Johnny Field off waivers from the Rays, per club announcements. He had been designated for assignment recently.
Field will begin his tenure in the Cleveland organization on optional assignment at Triple-A. If he holds onto a 40-man spot through the trade deadline, he could become an option for an Indians team that has clear needs in the outfield. Of course, he’s also a candidate to be sent back on waivers and stashed if he clears.
The 26-year-old Field received his first taste of the big leagues this year, but struggled to a .21/.253/.373 batting line over 179 trips to the dish. But he has shown quite a bit better in the upper minors, unsurprisingly. He’s a .756 OPS hitter in 805 Triple-A plate appearances and carries a .769 OPS in 697 Double-A plate appearances. While he doesn’t jump off the page in any area, Field is a solid all-around prospect who can play all over the outfield.
partyatnapolis
this better not be their big outfield acquisition

You know it is with this terribe front office. Blew their wad on the Hand deal.
bestno5
The Hand deal was a good deal. No place for Mejia and Hand and Cimber are signed through next year so it gives them some bullpen help for this year and next year when Allen and Miller are free agents

“No place for Mejia…”
I don’t think Yan Gomes and Roberto Perez should be blocking the leagues best catching prospect. That said, I didn’t mind that deal from both teams perspective anyways.
Polish Hammer
Gomes is an All Star and Mejia’s defense isn’t what they thought. With his attitude about temporarily switching positions to get in the majors ASAP, he punched his ticket out of town.
ThePriceWasRight
What are you talking about? they likely got their closer for next year and added 2 good bullpen pieces to an awful bullpen for a player they didn’t trust at C or OF and couldn’t DH.

Good luck in Cleveland to him. Definitely not a regular but a decent 4th. Will give 100%.
Polish Hammer
Great, another halfassed OF in an outfield full of them.
Polish Hammer
Outside of Brantley of course.
Michael Chaney
If he can eventually become a useful 4th outfielder, then this works by me. Even if he can’t, he’s still better than Brandon Guyer.
geejohnny
In fact he’s just like Guyer…..he’ll have his moments but overall there’s a reason the Rays DFAd him.
Michael Chaney
Obviously there’s a reason he got DFAd but he’s still young enough that you can hope he’ll be better than what Guyer is now (I’m just using him as an example).
Field at least isn’t limited to the outfield corners and doesn’t have to be entirely shielded in a platoon like Guyer.
bobtillman
He’s really a 5th OF; unfortunately, nobody can carry 5 OFs any more. It’s a “nice” pickup, but I have no idea what’s holding up Adam Jones going there. There might not be a better fit with all the rumors going on out there.

Johnny Field’s career is moving along. Progressing, even. Call him a Progressive Field.
longlivethechief
Wow. That was next level.

Johnny Field….came after Johnny football that answers the proverbial chicken and egg question
Phillies2017
That was like Lil’ Wayne level wordplay
Michael Chaney
I wouldn’t have thought of that if you hadn’t said it but you’re right lmao
jdgoat
He really wants to become that next level player. He’s even targeting it. Call him Target Field
tomselleck
Any on Timmy First Base?
jgoody62
Why do I find this similar to Brandon Guyer going from Tampa to Cleveland?
sufferforsnakes
Because it’s going to end in disappointment, too?

Another to add to the cast of Not Ready for Primetime Players…
Thomas.Swanson
Fits right in then
Solaris601
Tribe has an organizational need for OFs, but I sincerely hope Field doesn’t represent that OF bat they’ve been missing because his numbers definitely do not differ much from what they’re getting from the usual suspects.
waldfee
Well, Tito and Johnny Field each won a College World Series with Arizona. Maybe that’s a good sign.
At least he won’t have to play inside that abomination that is Tropicana Field anymore.
tampamck
Will play very hard
Slick34
Guy is hitting .21 in 179 ab’s?? Indians digging deep.. That’s horrendous
Solaris601
You have to wonder what was it about a .210 hitter that caught CLE scouts’ attention and green lighted his signing. Then again this is the same organization that had no use for Mejia and remains starry-eyed over Perez and his .150 BA
Polish Hammer
Starry eyed or stuck with a contract they won’t be able to unload?
