The Indians announced that they have acquired righty James Hoyt from the Astros. Houston will receive minor-leaguer Tommy DeJuneas in return.
Hoyt will head to Triple-A on optional assignment. He will occupy the 40-man roster spot that was created when George Kontos was designated for assignment.
The 31-year-old Hoyt had been a fairly significant part of the Houston pen mix over the past two seasons but has seen just one MLB appearance this year. He has been good at Triple-A this year, turning in 28 innings of 2.25 ERA ball with 10.6 K/9 and 2.6 BB/9.
Kyle Tucker promotion coming soon?
A 40-man roster opening for the Astros. Hmm…Tucker or an acquisition I gotta believe.
I believe the 40-man was at 38/39 prior to this move. I am not positive.
It was at 39. It’s at 38 now.
Think this is a move where they got someone younger that might help in a couple years while moving someone with some value at there surplus nothing more or less
Or Stubbs promotion inbound.
Hoyt always struck me as someone better than a career 4-A guy.
He’s put up solid numbers last few years even in the majors. Strikes out a ton of people. Considering the Indians are running out Otero, McCallister and Neil Ramirez in high leverage spots this seems like a really nice under the radar pickup.
Agreed. Good pickup by the Indians. Hoyt has his hiccups, but he can be effective at the ML level imo. He is older though.
Didn’t realize he was already 31 haha. But they need the upgrade right now so even if he fades quickly it’s worth it considering the low cost of acquisition.
Sort of like the D Floro trade?
Different type of pitchers as Floro is more of a pitch to contact guy but similar in terms of overall value I suppose. Guys who can probably stick in a major league pen but shouldn’t be used in high leverage spots.
Ramirez has been good, Otero and Mac have been terrible though.
Yes but idk if we can expect that to continue.
Agreed. Astros making room on their 40 man roster has to be for corresponding move to be made soon. Kemmer was also dealt today, although that move has nothing to do w the 40 man it did open up Alvarez to play LF in AAA.
Surprised they dumped Kontos and not Oliver Perez since Marc Scrabble is better than Perez at this point. They also have to consider what to do with Tyler Olson at some point
Perez has been money this year. Small sample size but lefties can’t hit him
Yes, Perez has been very solid while Repzy hasn’t done anything.
Surprised the Astros would fill a need for a team they’ll likely face in the playoffs.
Scrabble better than Perez? Really? Tell me, do you even watch Tribe games?
Perez and Ramirez have both helped tremendously to bring the bullpen back to life,
Perez already had his shot with the Astros back in ‘15. Did okay while here but don’t see them bringing him back.
I like this for both sides. The Indians could really use some optionable relief depth, and Hoyt isn’t the worst guy to have. DeJuneas has been surprisingly effective so far, and impressed me a little.
Earthshaking.
Astros starting the fire sale…
Still funny as always
This reminds me of the Josh Fields-Yordan Alvarez deal. Alvarez hasn’t reached the majors yet, but I like how that trade worked out.
Astros must have seen something out of him in the AFL. He was drafted late in 2017, so Astros had their chance to draft him a couple times… I’m surprised the Astros traded with a playoff team in the AL if nothing else.
The DOE fringe player when they have a Numbers crunch on the 40 man roster for a guy they can wait another year or two so they just kicked that decision down the street a bit. But yeah I was surprised they dealt with the team with in the league
Dealt not DOE
Hoyt is a fringe player. No objection, but if the Yankees needed bullpen help, I doubt the Astros are making a trade w them regardless of the perceived talent being sent away.
