The Dodgers announced today that they have claimed lefty Zac Rosscup off waivers from the Rockies. In a corresponding move, the club designated fellow southpaw Edward Paredes for assignment.
Rosscup, 30, racked up ten strikeouts without a walk in seven frames last year in Colorado, but had yet to reach the majors this year while working back from finger troubles. He has been effective in limited action at Triple-A, allowing just one earned run on four hits while registering nine strikeouts against three walks in 8 1/3 innings.
The 31-year-old Paredes, meanwhile, managed an 8:2 K/BB ratio but also allowed five runs in his 7 2/3 frames in the majors this year. He has also experienced some walk problems at the Triple-A level, however, issuing 15 free passes in 18 frames.

This. Changes. Everything.

didn’t the angels have a paredes too…??? maybe they can claim him as well…
oh well this guy didn’t pitch well while he was on the roster.

Bye Bye EDDY. ENJOY OUTRIGHT ROOKIE BALL

Angry?
Phillies2017
Paredes has a live arm but no control. Good b.l numbers but 7.5 bb/9 is awful
Psychguy
All these cute moves by LA management, so darn smart, yet their pen is a wreck.
BlueSkyLA
This FO takes the cannon fodder approach to the bullpen. When it comes to relievers they are attached to almost nobody.
Phillies2017
Honestly, thats the way to do it. Relievers are so volatile that it’s really not worth it to pay out the nose for middle relievers.
Pay a closer and go from there.
BlueSkyLA
I might agree if the philosophy didn’t also seem to extend to the set-up role, where you really need someone to protect the closer from having to make 4-5 out saves. Last year we had Watson and Morrow in that role and it made a difference. Now we’ve got basically a bunch of hopefuls auditioning for the role and nobody locked into it.
Falsehope
I like Hudson so far. Still shaky on Alexander but there’s still time.
BlueSkyLA
Even with his decidedly mediocre numbers Hudson is one of the top auditions. Fields is a little better but not much. You wouldn’t mistake either of them for Mr. Lockdown, and that’s the problem. This FO likes to dink around with a bunch of interchangeable and expendable relievers and if none of them rise to the setup occasion then so be it. Not a theory for winning, especially in the postseason. How many times are we going to need to see that script replayed?
Cam
BlueSky, with all due respect, the Dodgers were Darvish tipping his pitches away from a World Series last year. The FO has shown they can put together an effective bullpen.
BlueSkyLA
They can, but will they? Last year Watson and Morrow were on the roster, and what a difference they made over previous postseasons. Both of them walked and nobody of their caliber was found as replacements. So now we’ve returned to the situation that killed postseasons past. The back end of the bullpen again is leaning too heavily on Jansen.
Did you happen to see Jansen pitch last night, BTW?
Kenleyfornia74
Alexander replaced Watson. Dont let ERA fool you. Alexander has been just as good since he came back from AAA. Jansen hadn’t pitched in 3 days thats why he was rusty yesterday
BlueSkyLA
Now didn’t I just say that I don’t look at ERA for relief pitchers? I did, and I don’t. The first number I consider is WHIP and by looking at that stat I can see that Alexander allows too many baserunners to be a quality setup man. And not just this season, but throughout his career.
As for Jansen last night, it wasn’t just his walking the leadoff batter on four pitches that weren’t in the right zip code. It was also about an entire inning of not breaking 92 MPH. He wasn’t challenging hitters because he had nothing to challenge them with. The point being, he (and any other closer) needs quality support to be effective. It’s a real stretch to argue that he’s got the kind of support this year that he had last season.
Kenleyfornia74
Jansen came into the game in the 9th inning and had not pitched in days. Why is it on the setup men for him not having his best stuff. Also judging bullpen arms on their whole career isn’t really fair. Morrow didnt have a track record before 2017 either. Alexander didnt get a full time role til last season. Also lets just say they signed Morrow. That would put them over the Tax and have to pay a pretty steep rate. You have to reset at some point and this year was the best chance to do so. Daniel Hudson has been lights out since mid June so maybe he can turn into the next Blanton/Morrow. And he has a track record of being good
BlueSkyLA
It’s very common for a closer to not pitch for a few days, so a short layoff is not a good reason for him to lack control and velocity. That’s the bell he needs to be able to answer. I’m not sure I understand why you are asking why the setup men matter to the closer. I can think of so many ways they do matter I hardly know where to begin.
Morrow didn’t have a track record as a reliever because he was a recently converted starter with a long history of injuries in that role. I also know of course why the Dodgers didn’t sign him (or Watson) again but that’s totally irrelevant to my point. I’m discussing baseball here, not finance. It’s perfectly fair to judge a reliever by their career numbers because that’s how statistics work. As far as Alexander is concerned we have not only his last few years of pitching in the majors but a bunch more in the minors. Take a look and you won’t find a lot of variance. He is who he is.
All that said, I agree that Hudson is the best bet to be that 8th inning guy. But here we are in mid-July and that’s hardly a sure bet, and the time to find that person is quickly dwindling down. If the Dodgers do make the postseason I’d want it to be with a bullpen more like 2017 than 2015 or 2016. We saw how those postseasons worked out, and not for no reason.
Kenleyfornia74
The pen is not much of an issue anymore. Hudson, Alexander and Floro are 3 solid setup men plus Fields, Cingrani and Koehler coming at some point. Its 1 acquisition away from being pretty good
Senioreditor
No one down there is solid. Even Jansen has had his moments. There’s no way this team plays much past game 162 this season.
Kenleyfornia74
You sound very clueless. Jansen is still an all star. Alexander and Hudson have been amazing since their poor starts. Fields and Floro both have ERAs in the 2s.
BlueSkyLA
ERA is hardly the best way to judge the performance of a reliever, Floro has a WHIP this season of 1.4 and nothing about his career numbers to give us a reason to expect him to ever be any better than that. Most of the rest of the bullpen after Jansen is marginal, and some of it, outright junk. I mean when you’re claiming pitchers off waivers from the Rockies, for crissake.
Kenleyfornia74
So you cant claim guys from the Rockies? The bottom 2 guys of the bullpen are garbage but the depth is there if they get healthy. If not then sure it could be an issue.
BlueSkyLA
As if the Rockies should have the surplus of pitching. Depth doesn’t do much good when the role players are inadequate.
Dan_Oz
Great pic!
hiflew
Any word on why Rosscup was on waivers? Did the Rockies need a spot or something? I didn’t know he was DFA’d.

BlueSkyLa is so annoying with his stupid takes… ♂️♂️
