With the Padres’ lengthy rebuilding moving ever closer to its conclusion, the team has been inquiring about controllable MLB pieces to add to its rotation. They’ve already been tied to Noah Syndergaard on the rumor mill, and they reportedly asked the Yankees about Miguel Andujar during Brad Hand talks. Adding to that line of thinking, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic writes today (subscription required) that an executive that is with neither the Padres nor the Rays tells him that San Diego is pursuing a Chris Archer trade. Rosenthal is careful to stress that neither the Friars nor the Rays confirmed as much, though the two sides have had at least some level of discussions regarding Archer, he notes. As Rosenthal explores at length, however, there are myriad roadblocks to a deal.
Whether San Diego’s interest in Archer is serious or more along the lines of due diligence, it’s an interesting look at the calculus both the Padres and Rays need to consider when weighing future-oriented moves. And it’s certainly another notable data point suggesting that Padres GM A.J. Preller and his staff are beginning to look at improving the big league roster with pieces that could be controlled beyond the 2020 season.
Some more trade talk from around the league…
- In addition to the Rockies’ previously reported interest in Zach Britton, Colorado has also asked the Orioles about right-handers Dylan Bundy and Kevin Gausman, Jon Morosi of MLB.com reports (via Twitter). There’s no momentum in talks regarding Bundy and Gausman, however, Morosi adds. To this point, it’s not at all clear whether the O’s would even consider moving Gausman (controlled through 2020) or Bundy (through 2021). There’s little reason for the Orioles not to seriously entertain offers, from my vantage point, as they’re not likely to contend in either 2019 or 2020 with the Yankees and Red Sox both poised for long-term success. Obviously, that’s not to say they should simply take the best offer presented before July 31, but the Orioles should be amenable to moving just about anyone on the roster for a strong enough return.
- The Athletic’s Jayson Stark cites execs from teams that have spoken with the Astros in reporting (via Twitter) that Houston has been “adamant” about hanging onto its very top tier of prospects in trade talks (e.g. Forrest Whitley, Yordan Alvarez). The Astros’ farm system is plenty deep, of course, and it stands to reason that any of the rental targets they’re pursuing — they’ve been oft-linked to Zach Britton, for instance — would come with a lower price tag than that anyhow.
- The Marlins’ ask on its controllable relievers appears to be quite high, with Morosi tweeting that Miami indicated to the Red Sox that Jay Groome or Michael Chavis alone would not be enough to land Drew Steckenrider. (Morosi doesn’t suggest that either was ever offered up by the Red Sox — only that the Marlins wouldn’t have considered a one-for-one swap in either case.) While Groome and Chavis are generally regarded as Boston’s top two prospects, Groome underwent Tommy John surgery earlier this summer. Chavis, meanwhile, missed the first 80 games of the season due to a PED suspension and has only logged 10 games since being activated.
- Morosi also tweets that the Diamondbacks have shown interest in Rangers relievers Keone Kela and Jose Leclerc. There’s no indication that talks between the two sides are serious, but the Rangers are reportedly open to moving Kela, who is controlled through the 2020 season. The 25-year-old is currently sporting a 3.18 ERA with 10.9 K/9 against 3.2 BB/9 through 34 innings of work and has a 2.97 ERA with better than 11 K/9 dating back to 2017. Leclerc would be tougher to pry away, as he’s controlled for another four seasons beyond the current campaign and currently boasts a 2.06 ERA with a 51-to-18 K/BB ratio through 35 innings.

Put down the Cashman crack pipe Jeter…no chance on that fantasy…add Realmuto and maybe you get one of those two guys! Plus whatever his name is RP
osfan9987
Boston I think almost literally couldn’t acquire Realmuto with the minor league players they have, the marlins would bulk at anything less then top tier talent
User 4245925809
Tell me again please… Why does the No. 1 offense in MLB need Realmuto? Leon is a superb defender, vazquez should be back in about a month and is even better than he is with the glove. Anyone saying Boston needs another catcher is out of it.
osfan9987
I didn’t mean to suggest that they need him, he just went very outlandish with the valuation of the sox’s Current farm, I’m sure they will built it up quickly but a couple years or trading and promoting top players has left it relatively barren, meanwhile Realmuto is possibly the best catcher in baseball and has several years of affordable control

Laughing extremely loud?
fisharebiting
that’s cute that you think that even one of them currently has enough value to acquire Realmuto, regardless of need. Groome is out all year with Tommy John… Miami has enough of those guys coming back in Kolek and Garrett that they wouldn’t take on the Red Sox crap. Chavis is struggling after getting popped 80 games for steroids. you could throw in both, it still wouldn’t be enough

Astros wont give up more than Reed or Davis and pitching prospect mornin the top 10.
jbigz12
Then the Astros won’t be mAking many high level additions will they? That “leg up” on Britton didn’t quite pan out, huh?
HouthonAthroths
High level acquisitions require high level prospects like Verlander. Unfortunately Britton is far from a high level acquisition.
sidewinder11
I’ve been saying since last years deadline that Arizona should pursue Keone Kela. Unfortunately he’ll cost a ton more in prospects now than he did a year ago
scottstots
because of his newfound pitching ability

Kela and Leclerc would be a good pick up for any team looking for solid relievers. Rangers have missed out on other opportunities to sell high on relievers performing well (Dyson, Bush) so it would be a good time for both Texas and whatever team ultimately deals for them to make a trade soon.
yuforreal
Leclearc isnt going anywhere.
tsc32
Leclerc could be the closer for a long time in Texas. A team will need to throw some legit prospects out to grab him. We should definitely sell high on Kela though.
Padres2019ha
As a Padres fan, I don’t think Archer is worth 3-4 top prospects, let alone the Padres top 4. He seems to be digressing. What would it take??
deweybelongsinthehall
He’s not.
Rocket32
Archer isn’t going anywhere. Rays value him way too highly. Anyone that trades for him in the near future will have to significantly overpay to meet the Rays demands. His ERA is typically over 4.00. Most of his value is in his contract, not his actual performance. Archer is a mid rotation arm at best, overrated just like Sonny Gray was in Oakland. If I’m a contender I’d take my chances with Happ, Hamels, or Eovaldi for a way lower prospect price.
geejohnny
Archers stuff is a one or a two…..his head is closer to a 3 or 4. Should he figure it out…….watch out
Injediwetrust
Its easier to say who it shouldn’t take. Tatis, Gore, Urias, Morejon, Paddack, Weathers, Potts, Cordero
Could justify but would hurt, Mejia, Quantrill, Baez, Espinoza, Allen, Lucchesi, Lauer,
Close to ML ready: Kennedy, Nix, Allen
Highest upside but away: Ornelas, Ruiz, Arias, Rosarrio, Reed, Campusano, Patino
My problem is 3 years of control doesnt even give them a window to fix the other problems while mortgaging the future.
Dalton1017
in that case… think of the trade chip Archer could befome in that pitchers Haven. you can trade him off next deadline and get a kings ransom
keepinthafaithsd1
Ive been saying this it should be Renfroe/Jankowski, Naylor, Lucchesi/Lauer and possibly some single a scrub pitcher.
I before i was thinking more Renfroe but with consistant AB’s i believe hes going to get much better. Hate to see janko go but we already have Margot. Naylor is blocked by Hosmer and Myers for that matter. Coin flip for Lauer and Lucchesi..and i think the scrub pitcher would be an over payment but what do i know.
SixFlagsMagicPadres
He’s extremely overrated and will definitely not be worth the prospect cost that the Rays will ask for. Why the Padres would even be asking about him is beyond me.
dwilson10
The O’s need to target Cionel Perez from the Astros as the headliner of a Britton deal. I would like to see them be able to get Freudis Nova but I don’t see the Astros giving up that type of talent.
Kylesamac
Perez, Martes and Fisher. Would that work in your opinion. I would of had Paulino instead of Fisher, but I assume Lunhow wants to keep one of three for depth.
Jerryred
kela and profar to Diamondbacks for jake lamb,SS Jasrado Chisholm and pitching prospect,
who says no or is it equal trade
Dalton1017
depends on the pitching prospect… if it is widener or duplantier maybe.
pdubs2907
Not sure why the Rangers would really want Lamb and he seems to be a good fit where he is with the Dbacks.
Sportsfanatic0
Bad trade for the D-backs
steelerbravenation
Kela, Diekman & Beltre for Fried, Pache, Ynoa & Cumberland

i would consider… i would try to get Ian Anderson instead of Fried though

Dalton1017
Kela to ARI for Daulton Varsho and Kristian Robinson
LeClerc to ARI for Taylor Widener and Daulton Varsho.
Kela and LeClerc to ARI for Duplantier Widener Varsho and Robinso
bbatardo
I get the Padres interest in Archer, but giving up anyone in their top 10 prospects let alone more than 1 is not worth it. Archer is solid, but his lack of consistency doesn’t make him an ace to lead the Padres staff.. Any deal with the Rays would probably be an overpay.
lowtalker1
Why would they? Nothing in the top 10 if anything start with Naylor and throw in Getty’s
pdubs2907
Archer has a great contract which is part of the appeal for teams like MIL and SD.
Padres458
He really doesnt. 3 years of 4.0 era isnt worth 10 mil.
SixFlagsMagicPadres
Archer is not worth it, regardless of what his contract looks like. The guy is still living off of that one big season he had a few years ago when he got CY Young votes. They Rays will likely be asking for at least one top 10 prospect from the Padres system. It’s at that point that Preller needs to just hang up the phone.
jbigz12
Inlcuding Cal Quantrill, over 5 ERA in double A for Archer would just kill you?
padreforlife
All Preller knows how to do is trade for prospects, otherwise he gets taken to cleaners
sportsjunkie24
The orioles will never trade bundy but gausman i could see them doing
blackleather
as a Padres fan, Archer scares me, inasmuch, as he is the shiny object that is sometimes hard to resist because he’s still pretty young and his contract isnt burdensome. But he so reminds me of what the Padres got in James Shields, who came with accolades far and wide, because of his “toughness”and durability, with ALL THOSE INNINGS pitched.. But it didnt take long to see that the mileage his arm was carrying around, finally caught up with him…not in Florida or Kansas City…but in San Diego. But Im STILL grateful for Tatis..
RedRooster
Yeah, Preller better be sending Hahn a Christmas card every year for that one. Preller would get way more heat for that signing if he didn’t somehow turn Shields into Tatis.
madmanTX
Yeah, the Astros farm system is deep: sandbagging for a few years or so will do that for you.

If the framework of a Chris Archer deal starts with the Quintana comp then let’s compare equal value.
Eloy Jimenez #8 prospect at the time. Dylan Cease #63 at the time.
Matt Rose
Bryant Fleet
Padres can match those pieces for Tampa Bay.
Luis Urias #29 prospect in baseball.
Michel Baez #33 prospect in baseball.
Austin Smith – Padres second round pick in 2015 (technically their first-round pick) because the penalty for signing James Shields.
Brad Weick- A highly valued big left hander just on the outside of the top 30 for San Diego, will need to be added to the 40 man to avoid rule V selection. Rays can do that.
Although San Diego wouldn’t like to part with that, its market value and I think it’s a fair deal. Urias is a little weaker as the headliner as far as Jimenez was concerned for Quintana, but the overall pieces are stronger coming from San Diego than which came from the Cubs in the comp.
XSilva2
I actually like that package if they are able to acquire Urias in the deal. Anyway you think they could work their magic and get Gore? Not saying in the same deal but do you think instead of Urias they can get Gore as the headliner in a trade. If they can’t what about Urias, Cal Quantrill, Austin Allen and maybe another lower end prospect or even two. So in all a 5 for 1 type of deal?
Padres2019ha
No thanks. Only “top” prospect I’d give up for him is Naylor. Def not getting Urias or Morejon or Baez for him, I hope.
SixFlagsMagicPadres
The Padres would be getting ridiculed if they made that trade. Urias is their 2B of the future and Baez is one of their vital pitching prospects. Gore is basically untouchable. I think Padres2019’s suggestion is a little more realistic, and even then I don’t like the idea of trading prospects for a pitcher as volatile as Archer.
Friarfaithful117
Quintana was a better, more consistent pitcher before the trade to the Cubs. I don’t like the value comp. Plus Archer has been on consecutive down years. I would be willing to move Naylor or Quantrill as headliners but not Urias. If the Rays want higher rated prospects then we should look elsewhere. Ideally I would want us to pursue Carlos Martinez in St. Louis or someone with four yesterday of control.
Cardinals17
If Archer is on the down fall, John Mozeliak of the Cardinals will be all in on him!!! Mozeliak only commits to star players on the downhill slide, hoping to catch lightning in a bottle. The Cardinals are loaded with those type players right now!! Dexter Fowler, Brett Cecil, Holland, Luke Gregerson, Leone, Tyler Lyons, etc. etc. etc. All have been given nice contracts by the Cardinals president of baseball operations. John Mozeliak has wasted millions of dollars on former semi star players. Therefore, I can see him giving up the farm for Archer!!!

Just absolutely brutal to have to include a prime time fourth outfielder like Jankowski for Archer isnt it?
keepinthafaithsd1
I said the single a scrub would be the over payment… and as a matter of fact yes especially for a supposed ace with no mental strength.
RedRooster
Brad Wieck is already on the 40 and there’s no way the Padres trade their 2B of the future.
BBB
The Padres wanted to add Miguel Andujar to their rotation?

According to sportsday dailynews the pirates are at least semi-interested in Kela as well.
