The Brewers have received some poor news of late on the health of their rotation. Righty Zach Davies is slated to undergo an MRI, MLB.com’s Adam McCalvy tweets, rather than embarking on a rehab assignment as had been planned. Davies hit the DL with rotator cuff inflammation nearly two months back. Now, though, he’s said to be dealing with a back issue. The Milwaukee organization certainly seems as likely as ever to pursue a rotation piece on the trade market, especially after the recent news on Brent Suter.
Here’s more chatter from the central divisions:
- It seems the Tigers likely won’t be moving some of their most notable potential trade assets. Jayson Stark of The Athletic had tweeted that Detroit isn’t interested in structuring a deal involving starter Michael Fulmer while he’s on the DL and likely won’t be moving outfielder Nicholas Castellanos “barring a huge overpay.” He has pared down those rather definitive characterizations in a subsequent tweet, suggesting greater openness on the Tigers’ part to consider trade scenarios. There’s still no real indication that either player is particularly likely to be moved, though it seems that talks could still take place.
- There’s wide interest in Royals third baseman Mike Moustakas, according to Bob Nightengale of USA Today (via Twitter). Indeed, a whopping nine teams are said to be “in discussions” with the Kansas City organization on a possible agreement. That is rather a surprising figure to hear, if only because it seems to include almost every realistic contender, but perhaps quite a few teams can at least imagine a place for Moustakas on their roster. While his limits as a player are well known, Moose still delivers a useful, power-heavy bat and has returned to drawing above-average ratings at the hot corner.
- While Moustakas is a near-certain trade piece, the same is not true of Royals teammate Danny Duffy. Nightengale tweets that the organization has “no intention” of striking a deal involving its top starter. That’s really not terribly surprising, as Duffy has not been in top form this year. On the other hand, the southpaw has been on a much better run of late. Since taking the hill on May 24th, he has allowed just twenty earned runs over 69 2/3 innings. Duffy is earning $14MM this year with $46MM guaranteed over the ensuing three campaigns.

Please Overpay for Hamels……
mikeyst13
Nobody is overpaying for Hamels. Texas is going to have to pay down most of his salary to get anything half-way decent in return.
Marco waller
9 teams interested in my guy and at the beginning of the season he was left in free agent concentration camp smh,the market is messed up
southi
Not hard to understand. This past off season it was initially rumored that Moustakas would take significant cash to sign AND he was tied to a draft pick as compensation. Now everyone has a clearer picture about his cost and he isn’t tied to losing a pick. Moustakas is only really in much demand because it is expected he won’t cost too much to acquire.
Marco waller
9 contending teams are interested now and will have to trade prospects to acquire him with the Royals rebuilding but I feel these same teams could’ve have signed him at the beginning the season for less value than what they are about to give to rent him for a few months. Maybe I just over value him cause I’m a Royals fan but I think he’s a damn good player
nutbunnies
Castellanos is a guy who has had a mostly averageish career due to his horrible defense and low walk totals. He’s having his best season because he’s hit a few extra singles so far and otherwise has the same rate stats as the last few years. The idea that Detroit doesn’t want to try to cash in and wait for some “overpay” that will never come because power isn’t rare right now is absurd.
El Duderino
I was thinking the same exact thing. Why Avila won’t cash him in for value is preposterous – it’s not as if the Tigers need him to contend next year.
The two teams that could use a right handed corner outfielder that immediately come to mind are the Phillies and Indians. Both teams have respectable farm systems and will be experiencing a roster crunch before the next rule 5. Sure, the Tigers won’t be getting top 100 prospects back, but holding onto him won’t increase his value.
stymeedone
Of course, those teams you mention would have to be interested in acquiring him. I haven’t heard ANY rumor to that effect. If the value coming back isn’t better than the draft pick, no need to move him. A pick between rounds could become a top 100.
Stat_head
Since they won’t be getting at top 100 prospect back that means they’d essentially get nothing back. What is the point in sending a young affordable guy slugging over .500 away for nothing?

Ryon Healy for Duffy and cash.
anthonyd4412
Why would they include the Rays Manager?
Travis’ Wood
That’s one of the worst trade proposals I’ve ever seen. Dayton Moore would be fired on the spot if he did that
#Fantasygeekland
No he wouldn’t. Duffy isn’t quite worth $46 million over 3 years. even if he is, Healy adds value for KC. Have to consider cost rather than talent here.
WWWWWWW
What value? Another warm body? It would be right in line, however, with GMDM’s descent into madness since they won the WS.
#Fantasygeekland
Duffy really has little to no excess value. What would he make in free agency over 3 years??? $46m or so sounds reasonable. They would also get Healy in the deal, so adding in a little cash is reasonable.
lautrec 2
So you’re saying that Duffy has little value. Why would you want a pitcher like that on your team? I’m no Duffy apologist but in the current MLB he’s got quite more value than Healy.
#Fantasygeekland
Little excess value- which means he isn’t worth much more than his contract. I still think he’s a good pitcher, but his contract 3/$46 after this year is about what he’s worth, meaning little to no excess value.
bigkempin
Duffy is a mid rotation starter who is owed roughly $50M over the next 3 seasons and change. Heoly is a power hitting 1B who is under control until after the 2022 season. A rebuilding team has no use for a $15M/year pitcher.
GareBear
But above average first basemen with good power are a dime a dozen and Duffy is more valuable than that as a trade chip, even in a down year. Hold him and hope his value goes up next year. There isn’t immediate pressure to trade him, why sell low.
MilTown8888
A trade chip has zero value if you never cash it in
fisher40
They roll out these soft tossers who can’t even hit 90 with their fastball. Davies and Suter Now their breaking down
Los Calcetines Rojos
If the quality pitchers continue to dry up this quick I can totally see Theo hitting the panic button and paying up for Duffy to reinforce that rotation. I will be absolutely shocked if they don’t push for a starter before the deadline

#Fantasygeekland
Yeah more demand than supply, which should make for a very interesting deadline.
MilTown8888
KC should trade duffy now because he’ll lose value if they wait. Getting a 29yr old pitcher for the 2018 postseason goes a long way, and in the offseason teams will be comparing his contract to what it would cost to just sign a free agent
bigkempin
Castellano’s trade value will never be higher. Any team acquiring him now will know they have him until the 2019 season ends. Avila is going to pull a Machado on this and trade Castellanos at the 19′ deadline for pennies on the dollar.
stymeedone
Please, please, tell me of all the teams that are currently ringing the Tiger’s phone off the hook, inquiring about Castellanos! He would be a bench bat for most contenders, because they’d be leery of putting him in the field. He is a bat only player at this point. No reason to take pennies on the dollar now, when that’s all he’ll be worth later anyway. Right now he wouldn’t bring back what JDM got.
Stat_head
Based on UZR his defense would be an upgrade for the Nationals. However, you are very correct that the perception of his defense doesn’t really make him worth trading until he proves he’s not a liability in RF.
