The Brewers and Orioles are “engaged in serious discussions,” per Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic (via Twitter), though the precise focus of the chatter remains unclear. He does suggest that the sides could be negotiating over second bagger Jonathan Schoop and/or starter Kevin Gausman.
It’s hardly new to hear that these clubs are on the horn with one another. After all, they reputedly batted around proposals involving Manny Machado and Zach Britton, both of whom were ultimately sent elsewhere. It seems reasonable to assume, then, that the organizations are rather familiar with their respective priorities.
With its two major rental pieces already sent out the door, the Baltimore organization has perhaps shifted its attention to weighing proposals for more controllable assets. That said, the club does still have a few pending free agents to work on. There’s little reason to think outfielder Adam Jones would be of interest to the Brewers, though perhaps reliever Brad Brach might.
Ultimately, though, it does stand to reason that the Brewers would mostly be piqued by the possibility of adding one of the two players suggested by Rosenthal. The team’s second-base situation remains in flux, and it has long figured as a likely buyer of a starter. Having missed on Machado and a few other rental infielders who went out the door today, and with the market for rental starters showing little of real interest in stock, GM David Stearns is surely considering a move for assets that also come with future value.
The idea of giving value for players who’ll contribute in later seasons holds obvious appeal, particularly for a smaller-market organization that has turned back into a contender somewhat more rapidly than was generally anticipated. Much as the team wants to take down the Cubs in the NL Central, it will be cognizant of the need to keep one eye on sustainability. Plus, finding an answer at second and bolstering the rotation will likely be offseason priorities regardless.
Both Schoop and Gausman are players with long-evident talent who have had some ups and downs this year. On the heels of a breakout 2017 season, Schoop slumped through the first half of the current season only to go on a tear over the last month. Gausman, meanwhile, has had some inconsistencies and continues to allow a few too many home runs. But he owns a career-high 11.3% swinging-strike rate and some metrics like him better than his 4.54 ERA (4.59 FIP/4.05 xFIP/4.12 SIERA).
Of course, the Orioles also have little reason to move these two players for less-than-enticing returns, as there’s no pressure to cash them in now. Schoop is earning $8.5MM with one season of arbitration control remaining, while Gausman is taking home $5.6MM with two more to go. The Baltimore organization has acknowledged the obvious when it comes to competing in 2018, but it’s still not clear how long a turnaround the club is aiming for when it comes to putting the next contender on the field. It’s certainly notable that the club has some high-priced veterans on the roster.
In any event, for the time being this seems an interesting story to watch rather than something that’s likely to blossom into a finished deal in the immediate future. Roch Kubtko of MASNsports.com tweets that “nothing is imminent” for the O’s this evening.
Schoop?
Has to be. I bet he’d mash in the NL.
Love Schoop in any hitters park.
Chris Davis? Assuming Milwaukee takes his entire contract?
Where would Davis play? We have Aguilar/Braun/Thames at first and Shaw at third
Shaw can play 2B. Davis/Braun/Thames OF.
Shaw would have zero range at second
Shaw will never see time at Second base. There was rumors Braun was going to play second and look how that turned out.
I heard that the Brewers are now hiring a new peanut vendor…… lmao!
Joking aside, Stearns should hang up immediately once “Davis” is uttered by Duquette…….
Yeah Chris Davis is a noose around Balt neck and no Shaw doest play second
Haha. I could hit an inside the parker versus that outfield.
Yes, let’s bench the All-Star OFs for some Davis, Braun, or Thames. Must be a Cubs fan
well andrew, didnt take long for you to look a little silly with that comment
Where Shaw going to play when Moose shows up?
We will see how silly Shaw will look at second base. Not a good move imo
Well guess Shaw is playing second now lol
Well you’re wrong. Moustakas at 3rd. Shaw to second.
This aged well
About that lol
Yea the crew would take Davis and his whole contract if they included schoop and gausman for our bat boy
Chris Davis will never be traded and then retire when that contract is done, possibly b fire the contract is done when he is cut loose, not many players keep playing hitting .150
Davis in any deal to Milwaukee would need Braun in-return to offset the cost. Don’t see any of that happening.
Nobody wants Davis. He cheats with Adderall and still can’t hit .170.
Makes the most sense
Just a heads up for anyone reading through these comments; this whole thread is full of perfect examples of why comments should be banned. Absolutely no insight on anything, just random, ridiculous comments and no real substance in any of it. “This guy sucks” “You’re stupid” “no way this happens.” There, you’ve just read the extent of every comment on this whole thread. You have been warned.
Haha, I could hit an inside the parker vs that comment.
getting Schoop and Gausman would cost a ton but it’d be worth it in the long run.
Lol… Gausman blows!!
Getting him to the NL from the AL East could make him a different pitcher
You don’t trade a “ton” for that. Those are the types of guys you buy low on.
Maybe when you’re playing The Show you can, but real life GMs won’t allow teams to just take pitchers with that pedigree for nothing. You can only buy low if the teams willing to sell low and the Orioles know the market for SP is strapped.
Or he can remain the same pitcher.
O’s ain’t selling low on them. The Brew Crew wants them then they’re paying.
Real life GMs won’t overpay for mediocre players because they were first round picks 6 years ago.
Real life GMs without balls won’t overpay
Why would you ever overpay?
Gausman has great talent and upside. We all said Arrieta sucked and then look what happened.
Lol all the Balt starters suck
No, it wouldnt cost a ton. Low level minor league top 20ish org guys should get it done. Both of them are hugely flawed players, Schoop cant walk to save his life and has weak obp skills, Gausman has a career 4.16 FIP and a 4.23 ERA, that doesn’t bring back “a ton”
The O’s would never sell that low on these guys. They both have future club control. Why sell low now when you can trade them in the offseason?
It would only have been selling low if the orioles keep them and they get better. If they keep them and they dont get better then it will be “we shoulda traded them when we still coulda gotten something for them”
Look at Schoop last year and the past month and tell me he’s worth a low level minor league. Or a starter w upside and 2 years control. Ridiculous comment.
You severely undervalue both players. If the O’s trade Gausman it will be for more than what the Jays just got for Happ, and if they trade Schoop it will be for more than what they got for Machado, if for no other reason than they are not rentals but come with an extra year of control and the potential for compensation after their contracts expire.
I don’t think it would really.
There is only 1 position Milwaukee needs to add someone with control, and that’s a top tier SP.
it would be pointless to add a controllable 2ndbaseman. They will have to find ABs next year for both Dubon and Hiura. They already have 7 SPs with MLB experience all on controllable deals that fill the same role as Gausmann would. That’s not even including the dozen guys they have In AA and AAA that will need to find innings the next 2 seasons.
You can’t keep Woodruff, Burnes, and Ortiz all shuttling between AAA and Milwaukee in the bullpen for ever.
Rental middle infielder, and 1 high end SP is all Milwaukee should of done. If they really wanted to add a mid rotation guy, or bullpen piece it should of been someone in August on the Wire as a salary dump.
This is wrong. Hiura is about Schoop’s free agency away. Gaus definitely has nl upside. Likely plugs in as the tree who would have the potential to put pitch the one and two. If there are 7!starters three are hurt.
Hiura will be ready by next year, if not sooner.
Maybe late 2019, likely 2020
Hiura will be up in Sept at the very latest.
Hiura was raking at high A This season and it’s continued at AA. At some point this season he’ll be promoted to AAA where he’ll take again at hitter friendly col springs. He’ll be on target for the Brewers in 2019 ifnot then by June 2019. Not sure why the brewers want to trade for controllable second basemen when they have Hiura coming along nicely
I’m thinking Schoop. Doubt it’s both in same deal. Honestly, why aren’t brewers after wheeler. Guy is best pitcher this year that ya been traded or will.
I will admit, I’m surprised wheeler hasn’t been a more-mentioned or seemingly desired piece to this point. Variety of factors could’ve lead to that though. Unlike other traded starters like Happ and Hamels, Wheeler comes with another year of control. His price is likely much higher. And considering his still-untapped potential and high velocity, you know the Mets are asking a boatload. But he also comes with major injury concerns. And the Mets might picture him as a part of a potential contending team next year. All of that adds up to there likely being far to disparate levels of evaluation of Wheeler between the Mets and potential buyers.
Didn’t the Mets already deal Wheeler to the Brewers… or do we only remember the times the Os medical staff nixes a deal.
Lol that’s true. He was dealt before medical mishap. I think it’s true, that his price is probably too high. Mets will still find a way to screw it up though
Actually … it was Gomez’s hip that got that deal mixed – even though Wheeler was still recovering from TJ
In a Mets move they blamed the hip after Wilmer was crying on national tv and they tried to save face and so the Brewers actually made out better with the Astros and the Mets are still and forever will be the Mets
You mean like Manny and Zach? Yeah
Brewers have been said to be after Wheeler for days now. Mets brass also said they were focusing on the Asdrubal offers first before switching focus on Wheeler. 2 things at once is apparently too much for that front office to handle.
If the Brewers want Schoop and Gausman the deal would have to be headlined by Hiura.
No way would that happen, what makes you say that. Both together MIGHT net an Ortiz/Broxton package, only way Hiura goes is if it’s for degrom. Hiura is the beat pure hitter to come through our system since Braun, no way we trade him for two average players.
man your insane. young pitcher, power 2b for a prospect. sorry figured the brewers wanted to win a title in the next few years. guess that was a poor assumption. face it this is the year in the NL to go for it.
27 isn’t “young”, and yea he has power, that’s overrated these days. The brewers need to go all out, I agree, but this ain’t a title-winning move. We should go after dozier and archer, we don’t need another inconsistent arm in the rotation, we have enough, and schoop hasn’t had a good enough year this year to warrant a big package.
No way I’d give up Hiura for them. They’d get a nice package but Hiura should be traded for an impact player, not two struggling players who are both inconsistent and may never reach their ceilings.
Schoop is better than average, though he’s having a bad year. And Gausman is the epitome of average, but he comes with cost controlled years remaining.
All that likely adds up to a significant package in this market. Hiura would be significant.
Lol
lmao no it wont, not even a top 10 org guy
Zero chance the Brewers would include Hiura. Zero.
Yes zero chance. Hiura is only going to the Mets for degrom- if he is actually available.
Zero chance of this deal happening!!!!!!!!!!!!
Uhh… this is an insightful comment.
All I’ve been reading about is the Brewers wanting a second baseman. Do they not have confidence in their top overall prospect Huira?? Who’s a 2B He’s basically less than a year away from making the club. He’s been raking it at high A and AA this year
Well, being less than a year away from making the club is not helping them this season. When you are contenders, you help your team now, sometimes at the expense of later.
Hiura tore his rotator cuff his last year in college and was mostly DH’ing until about 5 weeks ago. Considering that he was drafted with defensive concerns and only recently started playing the field again, The Brewers might not trust his defense just yet.
Hiura had a partially torn UCL. Big difference. It could be a problem down the line though.
So does that mean the Brewers should just wait 2 years to contend and see if minor leaguers pan out? Of course not
If both are in this package I hope it’s not an overpay, would rather go after wheeler and not gausman. Even the twins duo of dozier/Gibson sounds more appealing, schoop produces a poor OBP and Gausmans advances numbers don’t scream “upside”. Through it all I trust Stearns makes a good call.
Both rentals! Won’t cost a ton. Don’t love gausman. I like asdrubal cabrera and wheeler more
Sad Cabrera went to the Phillies, hoped we could’ve got him and wheeler, surprised Mets didn’t package both.
Schoop ha another year of arbitration so the Brewers would have in 2019 as well.
Not rentals schoop for another year and gausman through the 2020 season.
Schoop has another year of Arb but I wouldn’t want to pick it up. He sucks
Schoop is awesome. He overcame an injury recently and is now raking at the plate and stellar with the glove. Superstar slugger.
Ya, he’s awesome; what team wouldn’t want a guy with an OBP of .271? Championship material right there.
The roof is on fire. Everyone out!! We need no water
A great teaser article!
No chance adam Jones approves a trade to Milwaukee be wants to go to a contender
No chance the Brewers approve a trade to acquire Jones. They want players who can make them a contender!
Jones would flat out say no. He has 10-5 rights.
Milwaukee is not a contender.
Lol. Jones isn’t any good and wouldn’t find any playing time in Milwaukee.
You DO realize that the Brewers lead the Wild Card, right? They’re contending for a playoff spot. That means they’re contenders. Dope.
Brewers fans have no clue how this works. They want good players in return for garbage. They wildly overrate their farm system and believe all of their AA and AAA prospects are difference makers. And mostly fail to realize their team has greatly overachieved in the first half…again…and will never win a division with a Craig Counsell playing Game 7 every night.
You’re a special kind of stupid.
And you think the orioles are trading future hall of famers when neither is much better than average at best, so I guess we’re both even.
Luckily, not one person on this board has any say whatsoever in the trading of either team.
How many Orioles games have you watched in the past 2-3 years?
Schoop is a beast. He injured his oblique early this year and he’s finally healthy. He plays excellent defense and has legit 30 HR power.
Gausman was a top 5 pick out of LSU and has excellent upside. At worst he’s a #4 starter, with upside to a true #2 starter.
The Brewers would have these guys thru 2019
Both of your comments regarding your guys are “if” comments. Schoop would be 30 hr if he hadn’t got hurt….gausman is a top 5 pick but he has upside.
How are they doing currently? Both of them? I don’t care what they did or “upside”. If we cared about upside we wouldn’t trade our better prospects. That’s why you won’t get hiara, ray, perralta. If we trade is to help the team NOW…not in the future. Both are currently average in 2018. Fact.
Schoop has a .271 OBP. How would we ever find such production anywhere else??
He hit 30 homers last year. Welcome to following Major League Baseball newbie.
Well newbie, if you hadn’t noticed, everyone hits at least 20 HRs these days. A guy who hits 30 HRs with an OBP of .300 is worth basically nothing in today’s baseball. Any team can find the same production pretty easy. You O’s fans talk like Schoop is some building block. Do you think Dozier is a great player too lol?
Yeah not going to lie, every team does, but yeah they’d have to give up a ton for those two in a deal.
No way Gausman and Schoop cost a ton. Gausman ya he’s talented but nothing special, and Schoop, they wouldn’t even pick up his 2018 arb
Thinking Santana would be ok this potential deal. Wouldn’t make a ton of sense for the O’s timeline- but the talent would be there
Just get Kyle Gibson or wheeler and dozier. Schoop has potential but I don’t trust him. Dozier’s power would play really well in Miller Park. Gausman is a 4 starter in our already underwhelming rotation. At least Gibson or wheeler could be 2-3.
Wheeler might cost top prospects (either hiura) or multiple other ones he’s legit best pitcher left and better than any traded. 1.5 seasons of Schoop, and Gausman has what 3.5? It would definitely take multiple tops. Either way milwaukee needs to pony up
Uhm if you think Wheeler is going to cost Hiura you’re either way too high on Wheeler or low on Hiura. Wheeler has an ERA over 4 albeit with a good fip and other advanced stats. But he’d cost maybe a guy in their 5-10 range plus a couple lotto tickets. Not top prospects league wide
Pitching is more expensive than hitting, he’s also not a rental. Machado netted roughly equivalent of 1 top 100 for half a season. Wheeler has great alternate stats, high fastball velo (which plays well in postseason) and is likely highest regarded viable SP (bidding war tangibles). I think he’s worth at least 2 top 100 guys. Which yeah, hiura might be worth that or slightly more but it’s ballpark.
We get it you’re a Cubs fan and you want the Crew to mortgage the future like the Cubs did for Quintana. Stearns is more restrained than that.
The Cubs obtained Q in his prime and controllable for 4 pennant races. That is not mortgaging the future. That is the future.
I think JDGoat is correct on Wheelers market value
If Quintana were actually good…but giving up Eloy and Cease looks dumb at this point. Quintana is a #3.
Why not both?
Because Schoop sucks?
Really? Apparently your looking at first month of stats. Then injured. Now tearing the leather off the ball. Great glove and arm. Guess it’s your first year following baseball.
Yes, I do follow baseball. And unlike delusional O’s fans, I know that there isn’t much of a market for a guy who can hit 30 HRs…with an OBP of .271. Hey why not throw in Chris Davis? The O’s are historically bad, yet you O’s fans talk like teams are just clamoring to get your players. They’re not.
Based off the title of the article and any sort of content they maybe talking about the unrest in the Middle East. Or Rick Grimes leaving The Walking Dead.
Per the mlb site’s article, brewers offered Ortiz and Brett Phillips. I would think brewers would need to offer 1.5-2 times that for wheeler.
You just want the Brewers to mortgage their future like the Cubs did for Q. Phillips and Ortiz is about right. Shouldn’t need to give up a lot for an okay #3 SP and a bad 2nd Baseman.
Haha dude you think they’d take that for both? Some of the stuff you see people say is crazy
How did the Cubs mortgage their future for obtaining a young controllable Q in his prime for 4 pennant races?
They gave up Eloy Jiminez and Cease for a #3 pitcher, that’s why. Would you give up a top 5 (in baseball) prospect for Dylan Bundy? Cuz that’s what the Cubs did. Quintana is meh.
We shall see how it works out. Q is not meh
And if you think Q is Dylan Bundy than I do not see how we can have a rational conversation.
I totally forgot to mention that was for Machado that was turned down.
I actually don’t really like the Crew talking about Gausman and Schoop (allegedly). Schoop kinda sucks and he makes 8.5 mil this year, so he won’t be that cheap next year. Gausman ya he has talent, and ya he’ll be better outside the AL East, but isn’t he really just yet another #3; Crew need to focus on pieces that make them a real contender in 2019 and beyond
I honestly don’t know why most of the commenters read trade rumors when they clearly know nothing about baseball. Schoop definitely does not suck. He’s a good defensive second baseman who hit over 30 home runs just last year. This year after missing the first month and a half is now tearing the cover off the ball. Gausman is pitching alright this year and he has a ton of talent. He also helps you this year and for two more at a reasonable salary. This has the potential to be a great trade for both teams, and that’s the way trades should be.
You O’s fans keep telling us actual baseball fans that we don’t know baseball. Then you tell us how teams are CLAMORING to acquire a 2nd Baseman with a .271 OBP. I don’t know baseball? Everyone hits at least 20 HRs these days, and most of them can do it while taking more than 12 walks through July. It’s you guys who keep rambling on about 30 HRs that don’t know current baseball.
Lol you cited one stat and he had a horrible first half. No mention of his 3.8 War last year or torrid last month?
I could see corey ray as the centerpiece
Woof. I hope not. Oozing potential.
I don’t understand the Gausman intrigue. It reminds me (a Giants fan) of the unwarranted hype over Samardzija, who got paid like a frontline starter despite never proving to actually be one. Gausman doesn’t offer an upgrade over Chacin/Guerra/Anderson/Miley/Peralta, and possibly Nelson if he can come back. If the move is merely to add depth, then okay. But the Brewers would still probably pay more than he’s worth.
Schoop, on the other hand, would be a fantastic pickup. I imagine Keston Hiura might have to be the centerpiece, though…?
No chance Hiura goes to the Orioles for really any package they could offer.
Lol. No, Hiura is not going for a guy with a .271 OBP.
Wow… I wonder if you could possibly tell the once yet again Schoop’s OBP? LOL
Yes! Schoop to The Brewers should leave little competition and a lower price for Dozier. Last contender standing who needs him is the Sox. Since they don’t have the farm system left to compete with anyone, that’s pretty much the only way they’re going to get anyone good.
Maybe the Twins will just leave him and Presley in Boston when they leave town on Sunday.
Brewers hate giving up prospects mid season
Amazing how many ppl think Schoop sucks. He had a bad half! How many 2b under 30 had a 3.8 War last year? I’ll wait.
i believe just altuve and jose ramirez
here is where WAR gets tricky though. there is an eye test to it as well. he was directly ahead of springer, harper, kershaw and verlander and id said its safe to say everyone on here would rather have all 4 of those guys than schoop. schoop had the same WAR as kevin keirmaier and byron buxton.
Probably going to try to build a package around Corey Ray. I can see them wanting him to battle it out with Diaz to replace Jones next year. If Schoop is a part of the trade I could see the brewers trying send out either Shaw or Saladino to Baltimore to clear their spot on the 25 man roster. Just completely an outsider’s opinion. Don’t kill me.
I wouldnt trade Schoop. Why can’t they build the team around him? He is a hell of a hitter, still young and im pretty sure they can afford to resign him. If they keep trading everyone, next year we are going to end up being a team made up of AAA and AA players. And you thought this year is bad, next year they would be lucky to win 20 games. Seems like every 25 years we have 2 or 3 good seasons and the other we are just a development team for other teams. We coach up good young players then trade them for young players and repeat.
Is your last name Grap??
