The Braves are known to be in the market for rotation upgrades, and Jon Morosi of MLB.com reports that GM Alex Anthopoulos has reached out to his old team, the Blue Jays, to discuss a potential Marcus Stroman trade. However, Morosi also adds that there’s “no evidence of progress in those negotiations.” Anthopoulos has suggested recently that he’s not interested in surrendering significant talent to acquire a rental, so it’s not surprising to see Atlanta exploring the possibility of adding a pitcher who is controlled through the 2020 season. The Jays, of course, have been active on the trade market in the past 24 hours, dealing Seunghwan Oh to the Rockies and J.A. Happ to the Yankees. But GM Ross Atkins downplayed the possibility of moving players controlled beyond the 2018 season earlier today, per Ben Nicholson-Smith of Sportsnet (Twitter link). “We’re not aggressively having those discussions,” Atkins replied when asked about moving some of his more controllable assets.
Some more chatter on the market for pitchers…
- Morosi also tweets that the Brewers and Mets have discussed a possible Zack Wheeler trade, though they’re not close to a deal. The Brewers, who acquired Joakim Soria from the White Sox earlier today, have been tied more to infield upgrades than rotation help in recent days, though they’ve generally been tied to myriad upgrade possibilities. Wheeler would affordably slot into the Milwaukee rotation both this year and next, before reaching free agency, and he’s been raising his profile as of late. In his past 10 starts, he’s worked to a 3.50 ERA with 7.8 K/9, 3.1 BB/9, 0.56 HR/9 and a 40.2 percent ground-ball rate through 64 1/3 innings. Of course, the Brewers are hardly alone in their interest. Mike Puma of the New York Post tweets that there are eight to 10 teams that’ve shown some level of interest in acquiring Wheeler.
- Reds president of baseball operations Dick Williams spoke to MLB.com’s Mark Sheldon about the looming non-waiver trade deadline, and while he declined to go into too many specifics, Williams acknowledged his ongoing Matt Harvey negotiations with other clubs. While Harvey was shelled for eight runs in his most recent outing, that one poor showing didn’t do much to hinder interest. “I certainly didn’t have anybody call and drop out after that,” Williams told Sheldon. “…I think the body of work is there that shows that he’s been a good, consistent Major League pitcher since we acquired him. And the potential for him to help a team down the stretch is certainly there.”
- Prior to the their acquisition of J.A. Happ, the Yankees also spoke to the Twins about Ervin Santana “and others,” per Jon Heyman of Fancred (via Twitter). Both Jake Odorizzi and Kyle Gibson are controlled through the 2019 season and could theoretically emerge as trade candidates, while Lance Lynn is a free agent at season’s end and is quite likely already available (though he has not fared well at all in 2018). It seems likely, though, that New York’s pickup of Happ will end their looks at the Twins’ available starters.
- Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports in his latest notes column (subscription required) that some executives within the industry believe the Astros would sell low on recently demoted closer Ken Giles. Rosenthal adds that one team approached the Mariners about the possibility of a three-team trade, believing that they could get Giles and flip him to Seattle. While the M’s had interest, however, talks failed to progress. The Astros maintain that they’re not shopping Giles, however, per the report.

All these starting pitching prospects why are they even contemplating trading for another SP not named DeGrom
Folty is developing fine and Newcomb when throwing strikes has been very good as well I am comfortable with those 2 leading the rotation until Soroka or Allard or Wright or Anderson develops into a Top tier Ace level starter. I feel it’s more important to get some quality controllable bullpen arms to solidify the staff.
I hope AA is calling on the Marlins and trying to get all 3 of the relievers down there or Diekman & Kela.
Yankeepride88
It’s because they are prospects. You have ZERO idea if they will become solid Major league players. That’s why.
mj-2
Agree on the starters. There’s seriously no need. If anything Allard should be up for that 5th spot right now
As for the pen I think they need 1 guy. Preferably a rental so they can pick up Kimbrel in the offseason
layventsky
TINSTAAPP (There Is No Such Thing As A Pitching Prospect).
dust44
Also, Stroman is the same age as Foltzy. They would make a strong 1-2 and develop together. Out of the 8-10 pitching prospects they have maybe 2-3 become regular starters. Most dudes become relievers or flame out.
Foltzy, Stroman, Newcomb, Teheran would form a nice front 4. If a prospect takes the 5th starter role ur good
AndyM
You ALWAYS need starter depth. Remember when the Mets were set with the “rotation of the 21st century” with Harvey, Syndegaard, Degrom, Wheeler and Matz? Things happen. You ALWAYS have to have rotation depth
its_happening
I thought you meant Isringhausen, Pulsipher and Wilson…

I saw a trade idea the other day that the Braves should go after Kevin Gausman. It suggested the Braves giving up Kolby Allard, Touki Toussaint, and Travis Demeritte for Gausman.
jdgoat
I don’t think they’d give up Allard for Gausman. He’s so inconsistent that they might as well just see what their prospects can do.
gorav114
Gausman has been inconsistent but he’s always been a 2nd half pitcher and he’d be leaving the AL East. It would have to be the right situation and I think Atlanta is the right situation.

True

If the braves did this trade I would freak out of my ever living mind. Such a bad idea on all lvls

If the Padres do anything it should be call on Strohman. Not Archer.
Jim Leyland gave that kid the ball in a decisive win or go home game when the best players in the United States were playing for their country competitively. He is a big game player with a big personality, I think he would do well and be a leader in San Diego.
lowtalker1
I like stroman as well
bleacherbum
He and Christian Yelich saw their value’s sky rocket after the WBC and how much Leyland trusted each of them. A baseball lifer, walking into a locker room of young/immensely talented young American ball players and picking out Yelich by batting him 3rd on that club. He went to Strohman for the championship game and he has a start for the ages.
I just like his moxy, and how he carries himself on the field, he genuinely has fun pitching and competing, so does Archer but Strohman is a better version at this point.
Padres2019ha
Moxy, nice
its_happening
Take him far away from Toronto as possible. That moxy is absolutely fake. Stroman likes the bright lights and the big moments. When he does not succeed he sulks like a 7-year old. Lots of guys enjoy the highs but cannot handle the lows. Stroman loves to win unless he is not performing very well. Like a stud wide receiver not getting enough balls thrown to him with his team leading by 20.
Send some prospects to the Blue Jays. The Stro Show can take his act elsewhere. An act – not real or genuine.
jimmertee
Trim, I agree about Stroman’s character but unfortunately he is in T.O. for at least this season. He is not going anywhere at this trade deadline.

Worth including that Zack Wheeler (along with Flores) was nearly traded to the Brewers 3 years ago, in that not-trade where Carlos Gomez failed Mets’ medical screening.
They’ve been interested in him for a long time.
Yekatman
Gomez didn’t fail screening, Flores crying on national TV led to the deal being cancelled.

Lol
steelerbravenation
Yeah in the off-season I am hoping to resign Markskis& Sanchez Trade for Sally Perez & sign Kimbrel
This deadline I just want some controllable bullpen arms that throw strikes. Winkler is solid Minter is a keeper Biddle as well the rest I could do without including Carle not a fan
doxiedevil
Kimbrel will never be a Brave again…. he will get a 200 million dollar deal elsewhere.
Stroman isn’t free so forget about him.
AA continue dumpster diving until Phillys have 6 game lead. and Dbacks in lead for second wildcard.
Just bring up the kids.
Zach725
Kimbrel isn’t getting $200 million
southi
I could actually see him have a slight chance as being the first $100 million contract, but no way he’ll come close to $200 million.
I would rather see some of the kids pitching than dealing them away. The way that Touki Toussaint is blowing batters away I wouldn’t be shocked to see him get an audition soon.
gorav114
They could go after Givens with O’s. He has some moxy and is not a rental.
bravesfan
Would like the braves to go get stroman but he won’t be cheap. Tough call.
TradeAcuna
Gotta love the cheap route. Although i understand not going after 1 year rentals, I’m also tired of them being reluctant to trade some of the prospects. We will probably continue hearing a bunch of names being linked to the Braves, but ultimately end up concluding with, “We didn’t find the right fit relative to our needs.” Shame they will let the season go to waste. Maybe they should learn from the Nationals and understand nothing is guaranteed. Would be a bigger shame if all these overhyped prospects fail.
Braveslifer
Braves honestly need to stand pat, build via free agency in the winter and make a few offseason trades. SP, RP, SS (in that order) Swanson is not progressing, bring up a few arms in Sept. to get experience and see how they shake out. Three more games against Dodgers will test our team.
Steven Hevenstone
I am confused on everyone’s negativity on Swanson. He is definitely hitting better than last year, and is quietly one of the better defenders at SS. Compare his stats with other SS in the league, he is above average. He is not Simmons – no-one is. I still feel they should have kept Simmons with Freddie Freeman. But they didn’t.
beersy
As a Padre fan, I am not at all unhappy with the return the Padres got for Hand and Cimber, but I was wondering about a Hand for Giles/Alvarez trade after Giles lost his cool. Would have brought a very good prospect in return and it would have been interesting to see how Giles would have reacted to Balsley and Bochtler.
strosguy
No way we were trading Alvarez for Hand. Alvarez is expected to move to first as Gurriel ages now Reed we would part with or even him and Tyler White but Alvarez is a known conversation ender
Knowthemarket
I would be okay with this. Stroman’s ERA is inflated by a god awful April and his FIP is a decent 4.16 so he hasn’t pitched as badly as his ERA implies.
stubby66
Trade Orf and for Lopez for Harvey that way the Brewers make room for the 40 man roster so we won’t lose someone who will need to be added this winter
HouthonAthroths
Giles for Paxton?
ldfanatic
Deal.
acmeants
Stroman might be an OK acquisition, but I think the Braves should go after Relamuto and a couple of the Marlins’ bullpen arms. It’s definitely time to ditch Sam Freeman and Moylan..
Steven Hevenstone
As far as Kimbrell goes he has noted on more than one occasion that he would love to be a Brave again, plus AA and Liberty have been stating money will not be an issue for the team now or even next year.
I do not see the team making a big move. Bringing in Venters, at least in my mind, is more of a PR stunt, though to be fair he will be an upgrade from Moylan and/or Sam Freeman.
If the team is not going to tank then it is very important that they get one more proven BP arm and a starter – and NOT Archer. Who knows, maybe AA’s ties with Toronto will help to get a deal for Stroman. I actually like him a lot. He is not a frontline starter, I would consider him a solid #3. Folty is developing into our Ace and the potential is there. Newcomb needs another year to become a solid #2. I noted some people stating that Teheran should be our #4 – I disagree due to his inconsistencies on the mound. He has been like that for a few years now. He is definitely a player who needs a change of scenery. Maybe during the Off-season do a swap with the Yankees for Sony Gray who is another pitcher who needs a change of scenery.
I still feel we can go for a WC spot – albeit it will be one game and out, but that will be good for the young players and also for the fans. However to do that the Front Office and AA need to stop talking and start making moves. It seems that for the past few years all we got are excuses and not moves. You say money is not an issue? Then prove it and stop talking. We have prospects, and they are just that, prospects. It is great to have depth, especially where the rotation is concerned, however we have so much pitching depth that it becomes not fair for those players who are ready and can-not move up due to an over-glut and not fair to the team as a whole.
Don’t sell the farm this season, but at the same time don’t make petty moves. Do something and prove to the fans that you mean what you say.
