The Blue Jays announced today that utilityman Darnell Sweeney has been outrighted. He had been selected to the 40-man roster recently, appearing briefly in the majors before being optioned to Triple-A.
The 27-year-old saw action in one game but did not take a plate appearance. He’ll presumably head back to Buffalo, though he does have the right to take his free agency instead. In 178 plate appearances there to this point, he carries a .228/.309/.430 slash with six long balls.

Why would Atkins/Shapiro put this guy on the roster and call him up anyways? There are so many other both short-term and long-term better moves that could have been made.
It’s almost like they on purpose sabotaged the MLB level team with stupid decisions like this so they could implement their long=term build the farm system model. All the while telling the fans they are trying to be competative at the MLB level. Utter nonsense.
Time to fire Atkins for the last two years of totally wrong MLB team level projections and the even worse corresponding player personnel decisions. Whose with me?
its_happening
This is exactly why I asked if this would be for depth in Buffalo. I knew in my heart they’d be putting a player unworthy of a 40-man spot on the main roster only to drop him immediately. Jays have plenty of players in the minors they could slot on the 40 and bring up.
Jimmer, I’m 100% on-board with Atkins being fired. The real question should be who to replace him.
jimmertee
As far as a replacement for Atkins, you or me could probably assess things better. Can’t do much worse.
I would actually demote Atkins rathernthan fire him. I would install a President of Baseball operations over him to oversee all his player personnel and spedning decisions.
Shapiro would still be President/CEO of the whole operation but all organizational player personnel decisions would stop at the Predient of Baseball operations desk.

I think they are try to stay “competitive” just trying to keep fans in the seats this team is spending money still what else can we ask for
Jays are in the same situation the leafs where in a couple years ago just baseball prospects take longer
Only mistake they have made is not trading Donaldson this past offseason when his value was still high

Correction: Maple Leafs the last 25 years. At least the last 12 years can be excused due to the league’s hard cap. The hard cap exposed their stupidity from the top down.

So, Braves are serious playoff contenders with AA, and Jays wallow with Shapiro/Atkins. Yes, I know part of the problems facing the Jays today we’re created by AA (Tulo, Martin), and Atlanta was already building a great farm system before he got there, but I would rather have a risk taker who’s moves took me to the playoffs multiple times than guys who miss the point that you either tank completely, or keep the major league team competitive while also building the farm system.

It’s odd how you can acknowledge that AA both caused (in large part) the Jay’s situation AND simply walked into a good situation in Atlanta and still bemoan not having him.
its_happening
AA built nothing in Atlanta. He’s already showing his true colors by not signing their first round pick. Smart or not, he had a habit of not dealing players at the deadline only to load up draft picks they wouldn’t sign. AA was an average GM with good deals and bad. Definitely an overrated executive.
He’ll upset Atlanta fans in about 4 weeks and then spin the narrative. He was able to get away with it in Toronto because the owner owned the team and the media.

A lot of teams didn’t sign their first round pick this year. Do they all have bad GMs?
jimmertee
I guess it depends how “alot” is defined. Only 3 teams failed to sign their first round picks. [Dodgers, Braves, D Backs] and one supplemental pick went unsigned [Pirates]. The math on that is 4 in 36 were unsigned. Is that “alot”?
I would say yes, failure to sign a pcik is a sign a GM didn’t do their homework.
jimmertee
I guess the Jays can’t offically say they are tanking, but I personally would appreciate a little more honesty from the Jays Mgmt about their assessment of competativeness.
It’s time to tank and get some higher draft picks.

Jays: “We’re gonna tank and go for picks. Just wanna be up front about it”
MLB: “Oh, sure, no prob”
Brilliant!

That part “should” begin Aug 1. If they have a lacklustre deadline the fans need to make sure the team knows about it. Toronto fans aren’t exactly the best at taking a stand (see: Maple Leafs, Toronto)

Which organization in any sport would come out and state that “we’re talking!?!”
Step off the ledge Jimmertree.

*tanking
its_happening
Not saying the word “tanking”. Tank is implied in this case, when you allow young, inexperienced players to gain MLB experience and for GMs to find out if they can play at the MLB level or not. Tanking is the Cliff Notes version of what a GM will say.

Reading these comments gave me a headache. You guys are ridiculous.
