3:05pm:tweets Fiers won’t be going anywhere today, Fenech now .
2:39pm: Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle has a pair of sources who do not think the A’s are close to a deal for Fiers, according to this tweet.
2:20pm: The Athletics are closing in on a deal that would deliver Tigers righty Mike Fiers to Oakland, according to Anthony Fenech of the Detroit Free Press (via Twitter).
Fiers, 33, has a 3.54 ERA, 6.6 K/9, 2.0 BB/9, 1.54 HR/9, and 38% groundball rate in 20 starts across 117 innings for the Tigers this season. He adds veteran depth to an Oakland rotation that currently includes Sean Manaea, Brett Anderson, Edwin Jackson, and Trevor Cahill. Fiers inked a $6MM free agent deal with Detroit in December, and can be controlled for 2019 as an arbitration eligible player. Fiers was a 22nd round draft pick of the Brewers back in 2009. The soft-tosser has carved out a solid career, making 123 starts for the Brewers and Astros prior to this year.
The Athletics are currently just two games back from the Mariners for the second Wild Card spot, with FanGraphs giving them a 35% shot at the playoffs. Ten days ago, they bolstered their bullpen with the addition of Jeurys Familia.

for a bag of popcorn judging from the Mejia trade lol
rycm131
I hope it’s a small give up like that, but based on history I get nervous every time I see trades like this as it has often times resulted In a top prospect being traded by the A’s

Mike Fiers, whom I constantly heard referred to as “dumpster fiers” in the past must have finally found the fire extinguisher because he has looked very impressive against competitive teams lately. In a team that is in desperate need of starting pitching, I believe the A’s will have done well for themselves with this acquisition.

Oh, I get it! Dumpster Fiers (Fires)! Classic!

The CoPa’s big outfield is a flyball pitcher’s best friend especially with plus defenders in left and center. If the Tiger’s had more range in RF he would probably look even better…
With the extra foul territory and weak contact he has been able to induce most of the season, he could be a very under the radar add.

Like this move if we dont give up much

I don’t get all the hate for Fiers, he really knows how to pitch.
BarryMackockiner
especially when he is throwing at Giancarlo Stanton’s head..
tigersfan1320
You really think that was intentional?
justin-turner overdrive
That wasn’t your question. You asked why people hated Fiers then gave a pure opinion that he “really knows how to pitch” as if all the other 100s of pitchers do not know how to pitch.

I think you got a couple usernames mixed up

Perfect…..stay far away!

not a smart move by the A’s to not at least add a starter
oldleftylong
A’s suck. Won’t make playoffs.
justin-turner overdrive
A’s are 1 game out of the playoffs and have the best record in MLB over the last 30 days. Grow up.
justin-turner overdrive
A’s need to bring up Luzardo ASAP to make up for this. No more Brett Anderson or Edwin Jackson in the top 3 of a playoff team.

Edwin J. been pretty dam good solid pick!

Any chance the A’s are trying to deal for Michael Fulmer rather than Mike Fiers? Blaine Hardy looks interesting.

Redacted that’s why bleacher report sucks for baseball news
justin-turner overdrive
The A’s are such jerks to their fanbase to say they need SP but can’t promote Luzardo, a guy literally every human who has ever watched baseball before can see is MLB-ready and going to be an ace in short order, it really sucks. Stop dikcing the fans around and bring him up already.

You got to feel for Tiger fans. they had a few players that could have brought back prospects but instead did almost nothing. My guess is the owner thinks they can compete next year. They have a bad team. Rebuild your farm and hope for the best. Now more years as a bad team
stymeedone
no need to feel bad. Fiers isn’t a rental. If he doesn’t get moved now, its because Detroit didn’t get a fair offer. They can move him in the off season or next year. Liriano wasn’t going to bring back much and was injured. Iglesias just didn’t have much demand. I could see the Tigers bringing him back, He wont be too expensive or for too many years, and they really have nothing ready to replace him.

the tigers are just fine…
