48 out of 72 All Stars are American born. That’s crazy! I thought it would’ve been like half
Why is that?
Because there’s a crap ton of international talent
There is, but there’s a crap ton of domestic talent too.
Votto and Freeman. Should be 2 Canadians in the NL. Although when I google Freeman it showed he was American-Canadian.
Freeman was born in California though. Not based on citizenship
You are correct. Didn’t know that about Freeman.
Freeman has all the makes of your modern Canadian tho.
Worst Selection: Salvador “GIDP” Perez
Besides Gennett and Hand, who is the other player acquired via waivers?
Aguilar and Hand
thanks
how in the hell was goldschmidt an 8th round pick??? not first 3 or 4 rounds??
I have friends that went to Texas State, where goldschmidt played. Apparently he was a one dimensional player that either hit the ball 500 feet or struck out. He is their favorite player, always rooted for him, but the level of success he’s had was unexpected.
He was also always a first-base only player and sometimes 1B-only guys slip because if they lose some athleticism or can’t play defense the only place they have to go is DH. There’s also a bias against right-handed hitting first basemen, fair or not, and scouts thought he had a bad body. There’s an interesting look back on what scouts thought of him here:
minorleagueball.com/2013/5/21/4351664/prospect-ret…
Yeah, it looks like lots of scouts were also really concerned about the contact issues. He struck out a ton in the minors.
Mike trout fell to the 24th pick. Nobody really knows when drafting who’s going to be a future hall of famer or who’s going to be Mark Appel
Or Matt Bush, Brien Taylor… lol. Tim Beckham I think too?
I honestly wasn’t paying attention that much to voting… dang yadier, still making it happen after all these years. That’s awesome. Can’t wait to watch the game.
Yadi wasn’t voted in, Buster Posey was but her opted out of the ASG to get a cortisone shot in his hip. Player health comes first and the second half of the season is more important than a pointless game in the middle of the season.
Yadi deserves to be there any other NL catcher besides Buster, I’m glad yadi got the call when buster chose to not play the ASG.
Contreras and Realmuto are better than both.
To be accurate it should have said 50states of USA. and then Puerto Rico.
Who is from Brazil?
Yan Gomes
Puerto Rico is in the United States
Yeah, I am kind of wondering why Puerto Rico is listed as a different birthplace than the US. Puerto Ricans are US Citizens, and have been since 1917
Maybe because it’s a territory not a state? Dunno…..
It’s probably because Puerto Rico has it’s own national baseball team. It is ranked in the IBAF world ranking (10th) and has a spot in the world baseball classic.
It’s not really about the technicalities, I think. The guys from Puerto Rico almost universally seem to self-identify as Puerto Ricans.
Umm, have you ever met a Texan? They self-identify as such pretty universally and also have their own flag. Or anybody from a former Confederate state flying the stars and bars? Heck, I know people from Indiana who are proud to be a Hoosier….and so on and so forth.
I consider Texas to be the greatest country on Earth!
Yes and no.
Puerto Rico is a commonwealth of the United States, it’s not a territory.
Yes all PR citizens have US citizenship but they have absolutely no representation within our government.
PR has more sovereignty than one of the states, but not quite the sovereignty of a country standing alone. They still have a local government which sets laws and policies for PR, they just have to fit within US law.
In all reality the situation in PR is very complicated, it’s not exactly black and white.
You could argue all of these things about each individual state, no? Besides the lack of representation in the US Government? I mean, California has its own legislature and government within the US, and can pass its own laws as long as they generally conform to US law or court ruling, right?
The two from Curaçao (Ozzie Albies and Kenley Jansen) should technically be listed as Netherlands Antilles. When both of them were born, Curaçao was merely an island in the Netherlands Antilles, then a constituent country of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Curaçao didn’t become an autonomous state until 2010, so listing them under Curaçao would be like putting George Springer under Connecticut and Paul Goldschmidt under Delaware.
Man, the Catcher’s position is a wasteland…the AL should’ve at least added Gattis (even though he’s only played two games there this year) instead of Gomes…
Then who would catch?
There are more than 2 Puerto Rican All-Stars… Diaz, Jimenez, Molina, Lindor, Baez, Berrios are all from PR.
They have 6 listed…
4 AL (Diaz, Jimenez, Lindor & Berrios) and 2 NL (Molina & Baez)
A sizable number of yinzers still bemoan the Mark Melancon for Felipe Rivero to this very day.
These are not people who let reality interfere with their opinions.
