While the focus this time of year is obviously on trade possibilities, the All-Star break also provides reporters an opportunity to ask players about their own long-term preferences. It’s not surprising, then, that we’ve seen a run of stories on players who won’t be traded away, but also aren’t under long-term control.
- The Red Sox have certainly enjoyed an excellent opening run, led by excellent performances from a number of core players. It’d be a surprise to see any mid-season dealmaking, but the club might be expected to look into some new arrangements in the offseason to come. Closer Craig Kimbrel represents the most pressing situation, since he’ll be a free agent. As Christopher Smith of MassLive.com reports, Kimbrel says he and his family would “love to stay” but certainly indicated he’ll wait to see what the market bears. Though he only arrived a few months ago, slugger J.D. Martinez says he’d be open to exploring a new pact that might eliminate some of his opt-out opportunities, as he tells Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com. Of course, there’s plenty of time left before he’s scheduled to have a shot at returning to the open market (post-2019), and there’s reason to wonder whether the organization really would want to pay up to enhance its control rights. In between those two players in terms of contract situation is staff ace Chris Sale. Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe argues that, with one more option year left to go, the Boston organization ought to look into locking up the 29-year-old for the foreseeable future.
- It seemed at one time that infielder Jed Lowrie would feature as a trade chip, but the surging Athletics obviously now have no plans to sell. Instead, attention has turned to the question whether he might end up returning to Oakland at season’s end. As John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle writes, Lowrie says the front office has “expressed interest this time” around — unlike the prior time his contract with the A’s was nearing an end. Lowrie, a first-time All-Star in his 11th MLB season, indicated that he’d be open to working something out to return for a sixth campaign in Oakland, though it’s not clear whether any effort at mid-season talks will be made.
- It’s a similar story for Braves outfielder Nick Markakis, another respected veteran who finally earned an All-Star nod. As Gabriel Burns of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution writes, Markakis indicated he expects to keep playing after his contract runs out this fall — which is no surprise given his strong performance thus far. Whether that’ll take place in Atlanta or elsewhere, though, isn’t yet on his mind. “We’ll deal with that stuff in the offseason when the time comes,” says the veteran.
- Those sorts of questions have long floated around White Sox first baseman Jose Abreu, who stands out as a quality veteran on a very youthful roster. As Steve Greenberg of the Chicago Sun-Times reports, Abreu says he hopes to have a chance to win before his time is up in Chicago. His focus is on “just trying to enjoy the moment with the team” at the moment, but the slugger also indicated that he’s at least open to spending more time on the South Side. “I’d like to stay with this team,” says Abreu. “And I’m going to do all in my power to make this team good as soon as possible.”

Lowrie doesn’t have 6 straight years in Oakland he left as a free agent and signed with the Astros in 2015
Miklo916
It’s doesn’t say that read it over. It’s say it’s his 6th campaign in Oakland

Red Sox certainly have some contract issues coming up….Mookie, Sale, and of course the Swihart extension……..
TeddyBallgameYazJimEd
Lol…i see a bidding war for Swihart… between both leagues… Korean and Japanese..
MeowMeow
Swihart’s time to prove himself is now, pretty much. His current role as backup catcher + occasional fill-in at other positions is the best chance he’s going to have at regular playing time in Boston. If he can put it together at the plate, I wouldn’t be surprised to see him take some starts away from Leon.
deweybelongsinthehall
Leon is key due to his arm and framing. Swihart however has improved his trade value to where he could get back a happy meal (sorry Josh Beckett-no fried chicken)…seriously, he has looked better recently and yes he will get ABs with Vasquez hurt. It is make or break time for him.
rocky7
Framing is nothing more than pitch “stealing” (balls that are incorrectly called strikes) which is up across the league and most probably due to the large influx of new and younger inexperienced umpires in crews in both leagues.
I wouldn’t necessarily overvalue this “art” because as the experience factor grows with the new umpire crews, this “talent” will diminish also in affect.
Why not ask hitters how they “value” a catcher stealing strikes during their at bat?
Also, Leon is nothing more than adequate as a catcher compared across the league.
Bruin1012
Leon is a well above average defensive catcher. This is according to every stat to measure a catchers defense. Fangraphs dwar, baseball reference drs, cera, framing you name it and Leon is well above average defensively. I would say he is well above average defensive catcher.
deweybelongsinthehall
Rock, you’re entitled to your opinion of Leon but I agree on framing. It is however important because umps today look at the glove instead of the plate. Ball comes in so fast with movement and a split second decision has to be made. Too bad umps aren’t treated like players where they’re not tenured and until they have service time, can be sent down to the minors with someone else being called up to take his place.
MeowMeow
Careful, the internet commenters who don’t get sarcasm are gonna be all over you for that last bit!
But yeah, add Kimbrel and Bogaerts in there, too.
gomerhodge71
And, although not the greatest hitter, Bradley.

Charlie Morton is a first time all star and a FA after this season. Considering his age, I wonder what his next contract will look like, maybe 2/30?
TeddyBallgameYazJimEd
$26M for 2years w/a $1m buyout of a 3rd year club option at $14M.
kenly0
He’ll most likely sign his qualifying offer. Not sure, but think it’ll be something close to 18 million.
Hoosierdaddy92
Morton has said he is retiring after this season
Steve Adams
He’s better and younger than RIch Hill was when Hill signed for $48MM over three years. I think you’re selling Morton considerably short, though he’s also said he’s not sure how long he wants to keep playing, so it’s possible he opts to just accept a qualifying offer and go year by year at this point.
rocky7
Come on Stever the Hill contract was a joke!
I think Morton would be lucky to get those kind of numbers!
MetsYankeesRedSox
Swihart needs a change of scenery. Someplace that will play him consistently. Then let the chips fall where they may.
PopeMarley
Korea or Japan?
MetsYankeesRedSox
Either be better.
GaryWarriorsRedSoxx
How you going to sit someone so a .200 hitter can play consistently?
Connorsoxfan
Send him to Texas. Not sure what they want for Beltre but since they’d end up likely giving him Swihart’s roster spot anyways, just send him back with whatever else they want, and then Texas can cut him in two weeks if they don’t want him.
justin-turner overdrive
No, he means a new profession. Guy is horrendous at baseball and has literally never put up numbers at any level to suggest that he’s anything more than a AAAA type. He has a .615 OPS at AAA in 485 PA for crying out loud. Why does Boston act like he’s anything but org filler?
Priggs89
Going to have to agree with you on that one. I never understood why Boston fans thought his bat was so good. The only time where he looked like a potentially good bat was 4 years ago in AA, and ever since then, he has been bad. The only position (that he’s capable of playing) where his bat MIGHT fit is catcher, and seeing how he’s a bad catcher, that idea goes right out the window. They missed their shot to use him as a valuable asset – he has absolutely no value anymore.
justin-turner overdrive
Good point, whoever internally is dying on this hill should be fired. Someone took a massive swing and a miss on that guy. They could have identified him as a tweener earlier and gotten a pretty good player for him when he was still on those silly prospect lists.
Bruin1012
Maybe the Red Sox can trade Swihart to Arizona in the off-season. He played well for TL and if I remember right Arizona was a team that wanted him if Boston was trading him. Just want to see him get a fair chance.
Bruin1012
It would take me too long to debate Swihart so I’m just going to say he has been the most mismanaged player I have ever seen. He needs a change of scenery but now he probably won’t get it till the offseason. Swihart was a good hitter in the minor leagues right up till he was called up in 2015 and held his own in 2015. It’s unfortunate but he is still young and should get a chance to prove himself somewhere.
dark vengeance
If you think he’s the most mismanaged player ever you must be to young to remember the joba rules at the Yankees. Jobs Chamberlain one of the most mismanaged players ever. More so than Swihart.
Bruin1012
I remember Joba and would definitely argue Swihart has been as mismanaged or more I can’t think of anyone that has been more mismanaged then Swihart.
rocky7
Agreed Bruin1012, Swihart makes me think about my Yankees and the way they mis-managed Jobba when he came up and look what that did to him. Unfortunately, Jobba, when he did mover on from the Yankees didn’t seemingly ever reach the heights he might have with good decision making initially in his career.
2012orioles
I want markakis back in Baltimore even if it’s not a smart move
gomerhodge71
I could definitely see that if not for the money. Wonder if he’d take a little less to go back?
jdgoat
Don’t you think he’d want to win?
justin-turner overdrive
Lowrie’s sleeping issues and lack of miles on his body means he should be a decent chance to keep up this level of production til he’s 36 or 37. I’d do 2 years but wouldn’t be mad at 3 either. Trading Barreto as the headliner in a package for a front-line SP wouldn’t even really hurt because of the teams depth at 2B anyway. All-Star level Lowrie is a fine player to pencil in for most of the A’s current contention window, which opened about a month ago and will last at least a few years.
Been saying it all year, the A’s are a massively talented team with one of the deepest farms in the game, they can pull of a megadeal and not even hurt the team long term.
sacball
with the emergence of Eli White and to a lesser extent Richie Martin, Barreto is definitely dispensable now
justin-turner overdrive
The breakouts of Dunshee, Marks, Milburn and Howard added to an already massive stockpile of legit prospects.
I can see them getting an elite bullpen guy too, they must be furious at Trivino right now though, over that twitter nonsense. So wild Luzardo could be a late season figure, talk about a trade, Beane destroyed the Nats on that one.
emt tim
what did Trivino do?
Gwynning's Anal Lover
Surprised the Yankees don’t leverage their slew of Rule V eligible prospects to get Abreu and Soria away from the White Sox.
sportingdissent
They likely will trade for the pair, especially since these front offices match up so often. Doubtful it would only be guys missing the 40 man though if Abreu’s in the deal. He’s not a rental.
Priggs89
Neither is Soria.
And Abreu’s probably not going anywhere. He has more value to the Sox (going beyond just the numbers) than he will for anyone else at this point, and seeing as he’s currently in a miserable slump, I don’t see anyone biting at the price it’ll take for Hahn to pull the trigger on a deal.
ChiSoxCity
LOL, stick to your day job.
MetsYankeesRedSox
Glad the weather is cooperating.
Let’s go National League!
mikeyank55
Only a true Mets fan would root for the NL and happy that the weather is cooperating
B-Strong
The Sox are only going to be able to afford Sale or Betts but not both unless Price does us a favor and opts out which he’d be insane to do. I think Boston will let Kimbrel go.
hyraxwithaflamethrower
I doubt Abreu’s going anywhere. He’s in the worst slump of his career and serves as a good mentor the Sox’ hoard of young talent. I think they trade Soria, but that will be the biggest deal.
sportingdissent
Abreu is due for positive regression – ie back to his mean. He’d be an excellent pickup for the rest of the year. The added year is bonus. Teams should definitely be (and most certainly are) interested.
Packaged with Soria and cash, the Sox could probably get a decent prospect out of Houston.
