While the ongoing television rights dispute between the Orioles and Nationals has been out of the news for some time, that doesn’t mean there hasn’t been any action behind the scenes. Jeff Barker of the Baltimore Sun recently provided a notable update on the situation. While the Baltimore organization has “grown weary of battling Major League Baseball over the [MASN] network” and has tried to work out a settlement, there’s still no resolution. At present, there’s no indication that the stalemate will be broken voluntarily; barring a change in that dynamic, the next big event on the calendar is a scheduled arbitration hearing in November.
Here’s the latest from the AL East:
- The Yankees may be the “main player” for Blue Jays starter J.A. Happ, per Jon Heyman of Fancred (via Twitter). Not only is Happ arguably the best rental starter on the market, but it seems the Yanks hold him in high regard. They won’t be alone in pursuing the Toronto southpaw, however. MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand tweets that the Jays are directing some scouting resources toward the Brewers farm system, perhaps in anticipation of interest from the Milwaukee organization.
- Fellow Blue Jays starter Marco Estrada left last night’s game with a sore hip, as MLB.com’s Gregor Chisholm was among those to tweet. For now, the severity isn’t known, though perhaps it’s promising that the Toronto organization made a roster transaction today but did not feel compelled to rush Estrada onto the disabled list. As we recently examined, Estrada’s strong performance of late has made him seem increasingly like a potential trade candidate this summer, but he’ll only be a useful asset for the Jays if he’s in good health.
- Orioles third baseman Manny Machado is said to be drawing wide and increasingly active interest from a variety of rival organizations. That’s no surprise, as he’s a mid-prime rental asset of rare ability. The Diamondbacks have held “consistent” talks with the Baltimore organization, per MLB.com’s Jon Morosi (Twitter links), which largely confirms the steady stream of reports we’ve seen on Arizona’s engagement. Morosi adds that the O’s are interested in young D-Backs prospect Jon Duplantier, whose current injury has “complicated” efforts to put together a package that suits both teams. It’s hard to gauge to what extent Duplantier’s status will impact the broader Machado situation, in no small part because it is not apparent whether he’s a player the Snakes would be willing to part with for a rental. Meanwhile, the Braves do have some interest in Machado, Morosi also tweets, but are mostly exploring the market for “controllable relievers” at the moment. Again, that dovetails with what we’ve heard out of Atlanta in recent weeks.

If the Evil Empire gets Happ, you may as well not play the rest of the season for any team, specially the Redsox. It’s just too bad the Redsox made some not very good with trades, not counting Sale, he’s been worth every penny.

If I need a brain transplant, I want yours. Because it’s never been used.

Right? I’ve heard that “forget about playing the rest of the games…..just give them the title” so many times and it rarely works out that way. That’s why I love baseball! Because the ball often takes funny bounces…..

Stop posting these things, people think you’re a whacked Yankees fan.
Bald Vinny
Wow
thegreatcerealfamine
Hey Vinny glad to see you took some time away from your job with Tucker Carlson to weigh in. Riveting stuff as always broheim.
Bald Vinny
Tucker is a great American, Crispy.
xabial
Joey Chestnut is another great American.
Steven Chinwood
You’re obviously trolling.
Perksy
Happ would be a nice addition, but he doesn’t put them over the top. Their pitching would still be behind the Astros.
ABCD
Maybe so, but you just need to get into the postseason and anything can happen.
Steven Chinwood
Once the Yankees lineup gets into that Astros BP it even things out.
pasha2k
The Astro are really good.
bleacherguy
Who cares what the Yankees get. I am way more interested in what they have to give up.
pasha2k
I bet they didn’t give much to get Stanton from Jeter
Old User Name
They gave up 265 million.
xabial
pasha2k,
Yankees gave up a prospect with 80-grade fastball, that’s improving, and climbing ranks of Marlins’ farm. Jorge Guzman. 97MPH fastball, that tops out 103 MPH. legit
Jury is still out if they get anything for Starlin Castro.
There’s also the matter of assuming $265MM of his contract.

I have the solution send the Nationals back to Montreal. Mr Selig screwup putting the Nationals so close to Baltimore then telling The Orioles to share their network. Selig is a crook who allowed steroids in the game
jimmertee
I am for moving the Nats back to Montreal. Forget the reasons, Montreal needs a MLB team!
Perksy
It won’t be the he Nats, but maybe moving Tampa or Miami to Montreal would be good.
Steven Chinwood
Montreal is the last city that deserves a team. Go back and look at the attendance figures during their time in Montreal, pretty close to the Rays.
its_happening
Agreed Steven C. Sorry Jimmer, Montreal had worse attendance than the Rays and they should never be mentioned as a candidate ever again.
jimmertee
Before the strike in the 90’s, Montreal drew huge amounts of fans. Strike killed all that, then the stadium started to fall apart and was never updated. I used to go every year, buy $10 seats and sit down front. Same seats at Rogers centre are $75, in Yankee stadium you need to sell your car to sit in those seats.
Plus the stadium was in the burbs not downtown. Like the Rays, a downtown stadium would fix many problems, including attendance.
It is not about deserving a franchise like entitlement matters. There are still deep pockets for baseball in Montreal. It’s all about the money.
Having Loria as a owner in the end was awful. Guy was for himself always and not for the game in Montreal.
As fan I would like to see baseball in downtown Montreal. I beleive that it would work well.
its_happening
Montreal did not eclipse over 2-million fans after the 1983 season. That was also the last time they had more than the league average in attendance. They were not on-pace to break 2-million in 1994. Well before Loria finished the “job”.
Although outside the downtown core, Montreal had a subway stop right below the field. That’s way more accommodating than Toronto and many other baseball cities in America. Tampa’s location is way worse than Olympic stadium. Way worse.
Montreal is also a packed city with little space available to build a stadium. And, where will they get the money? They are a poorly-run province struggling to balance a budget. They’d have to get federal funding, and that’s total bush.
No chance the city of Montreal can support a baseball team. Even if they are slotted in the AL East where Toronto, Boston and New York fans make the trip. Montreal is a nostalgic fantasy, and it should be left there.
thegreatcerealfamine
People love to try and use the 1994 strike shortened season as an example for any argument to give that city a team. I guess they think people can’t remember or research the whole history of that franchise.
its_happening
Not just that cereal – the economics and infrastructure of Montreal and the province of Quebec. Not to mention just an hour away, the country’s capital city could not sustain Montreal’s AAA affiliate, the Ottawa Lynx. That stadium, which looked very nice over 20 years ago, looks worn down and would need serious upgrades if they ever had a minor league team.

“Mr. Selig screwup putting the Nationals so close to Baltimore then telling The Orioles to share their network.” (sic)
You don’t appear to get it. “Putting” The Nats games on the O’s teevee network was Angelos payoff for allowing the Nats to operate within the O’s protected territory. The two teams have been unable to agree on how much the Nats are entitled to, hence this interminable arbitration.
“ . . . send the Nats back to Montreal.”
You think a team in Montreal would draw as well as the Nats are drawing? Give it a rest. The Nationals have built a successful franchise in D.C., they aren’t interested in going anywhere.
jorge78
And steroids and personal motivations has WHAT to do with MASN?
bleacherbum
Duplantier is going to be legit. He needs to be in the trade if you are Baltimore or else it’s a no deal.
sidewinder11
I’d definitely give up Duplantier for Machado. His delivery doesn’t look like it’ll hold up as a starter long term. DBacks should sell high on him. I’d give up Pavin Smith too. A package of Duplantier, Pavin Smith, Jasrado Chisholm and Johansson Duran might get the job done.
sidewinder11
Jhoan Duran*
prestigeworldwide
lol hell no.
stymeedone
Diamondbacks traded Scherzer to the Tigers because his delivery didn’t look like it would hold up, either. How’d that work out?
scottaz
LOL you are clueless. The Dbacks wouldn’t give up that package during the off-season for a Full Year of Machado, what makes you think they would now trade that package for a Half year of Machado?
jimmertee
As it was stated in these very pages in Spring training this year, Estrada`s back structure is wonky and when it is right and he can get over the top of his delivery his control is pinpoint and he is a very good pitcher. But, when he is hurting, he is awful.
I called for him to bow out at 55 innings this year, he made it to 89`innings, kudo`s on him.
If Atkins and Shapiro aren`t careful, they may lose more than just Donaldson and hot Smoak as trade possibilities this deadline. The Jays should trade everyone they can as soon as they can. #Scoutseyes
its_happening
I still don’t see a contender believing they have an improvement at 1B by obtaining Smoak, or a team has too much invested at 1B (Cleveland). I doubt Smoak is dealt, but if he is, kudos.
I’d also be shocked now to see any team interested in having Estrada. Don’t see it happening.

” ongoing television rights dispute between the Orioles and Nationals”
What is the Nationals payroll?
What has the Nats payroll been for many years? Yet they don’t have a TV deal.
Why isn’t every baseball fan acutely aware of this?

Number of columns written by the above writers concerning the Nationals top-of-the-game payroll while not having a TV deal?

Tom
They’re payroll isn’t really in the top of baseball…they’re borrowing peter to pay paul, backloading and significantly deferring mega dollars on all their long-term deals to afford them, in the hopes that the TV rights deal will work itself out and bail them out. If it doesn’t happen the Lerners will probably sell the Nats when all those bills come due along with trying to maintain a payroll.

There’s also tax write off factors and dreams at play. The old man is a billionaire and he wants a WS ring and they can book a loss against profits elsewhere.

“Yet they don’t have a TV deal.”
WTF are you blabbering about now. Their teevee rights are covered by the agreement with the Orioles which allows the Nats to operate within the O’s territory. They most certainly do have a TV deal. Any more nonsense you need to free associate publicly about?
66TheNumberOfTheBest
I’ve read many articles about the O’s-Nats MASN dispute. I’ve yet to read one that painted any picture but MLB and the Nats agreeing to whatever it took to get the Orioles to surrender their territorial rights and then immediately trying to renege once the moving trucks were unloaded.
Am I missing anything?
majorflaw
“ . . . and then immediately trying to renege once the moving trucks were unloaded.”
Everything that has happened and is happening was anticipated by the agreement between the two teams and MLB. When the Nats were unhappy with the Os lowball offer for their teevee rights the Nats chose to arbitrate the issue. As is provided for in the original agreement. In the absence of the original deal between the clubs, the Nationals would already have their own teevee network. Not sure what you consider reneging?
philmccrevice
The Orioles received 75 million from MLB to allow another team to enter their territory that stretched from Harrisburg , Pennsylvania to North Carolina.

Glad they’re looking at Happ. He has been pretty good. Hamels is garbage and I’m glad we’re no longer connected to him.
Jaywatch
Happ is quietly, very solid, consistent and AL East hardened.

Braves should get Iglesias or Hand and another solid reliever. As much as I want Machado, Camargo is an elite defender who is putting up solid numbers at 3rd. Unless we’re replacing Dansby with Machado, I’m not all that into a Machado aquisition.
Adam72385
I agree. I think Machado is more of an addition in the offseason as the Braves have more money to spend in Free Agency. I do believe the Braves would be more inclined to pull the trigger on someone like Arenado only because of being under team control for longer and allows them to save money to go toward other assets such as a deeper rotation next year and beyond. However, if you get Machado now and he likes the vibe being around FF, Dansby, Ozzie, Acuna, and the rest of the team, he may be more inclined to sign with the Braves long term in the offseason, even though that could go the other way too. I like Camargo, but I think he is more of a super utility like Infante and Prado were. He can still be a huge asset, and still have a defined role. I like holding on to him as well as getting either Arenado or Machado.
scottaz
Dbacks will not trade Duplantier. Sure the Orioles like Duplantier, every team in Major League Baseball likes Duplantier! The reason the Dbacks didn’t trade for Machado during the off-season is that they wouldn’t trade Duplantier for a Full Season of Machado. Who in their right mind thinks the Dbacks will now trade Duplantier for a HALF season of Machado!?
scottaz
Here’s a Dbacks package for Machado…3 major league/major league ready players plus a #10-15 prospect. Elite defensive shortstop Nick Ahmed; power hitting 1b Christian Walker who is major league ready but blocked by Goldschmidt; starting pitcher Matt Koch; and low minors pitching prospect Matt Tabor..
J leathal86
You do realize we had Christian walker before in fact the orioles drafted him and oh yea we just payed a first basemen 161 mill
andrewgauldin
I want whatever you’re smoking. That’s a horrible trade. Orioles say HELL NO
DJH
Lots of incorrect information about the MASN deal here.
In order to avoid a lawsuit by Angelos, Selig gave a sweetheart deal to create the MASN network and gave the MASN perpetual rights to all Nats game broadcasts.
The Nats have a small ownership percentage of MASN. It increases by something like 1 or 2% a year. But maxes out at something like 33%.
The deal had a reset every 5 years to renegotiate the amount paid to the two teams. Each team gets the same amount despite the fact that the D.C. market is orders of magnitude bigger.
The 5 year reset included a provision for arbitration, including the details of how MLB would designate the arbitrators. Both teams agreed to those details.
When the first reset period resulted in no agreement on a rights fee, it went to arbitration and the arbitrators decided on a value closer to what the Orioles asked for than what the Nationals proposed. Angelos decided to reneg on that agreement and went to court. It’s been in dispute ever since, including hoping past another 5 year reset.
Lights out
If any Canadian markets are considered for baseball it should be Vancouver or Calgary. Calgary’s got a bigger population than half the city’s in Major League Baseball. And Vancouver is a huge North American Market.
its_happening
Although a small capacity, Vancouver has supported the Canadians baseball team. I doubt Montreal would care to support a minor league baseball team.
