Some rumblings from around the AL East…
- The Yankees are known to be exploring the starting pitching market but Matt Harvey isn’t a big target for the team, Fancred’s Jon Heyman reports (Twitter link). Harvey has recovered a bit of his former value by pitching well over 10 starts for the Reds, though the Yankees are wary of the right-hander due to the “potential circus” of extra media attention that would accompany Harvey’s return to New York.
- The Orioles are taking a new approach to this year’s trade deadline, rival evaluators tell ESPN.com’s Buster Olney (Twitter link). The O’s “seem much more focused, much more organized, much more aggressive, much more engaged” this season than in past years. Baltimore is facing some pivotal, long-term decisions in weighing trades of Manny Machado and other major stars, and so it isn’t any surprise that the organization is looking at this deadline with particular intensity. The change in approach could also have something to do the seemingly power shift in the ownership and front office, as Peter Angelos’ sons have been taking larger roles in the Orioles’ operations.
- Evaluators from the Red Sox, Phillies, Cubs, and Braves were on hand to watch Nathan Eovaldi’s Monday start for the Rays, MLB.com’s Bill Chastain writes. Of course, several other players on the Rays or Marlins were also likely under observation, though Eovaldi represents an interesting low-cost option for teams in need of rotation help — of the teams listed, only the Cubs wouldn’t appear to be in need of starting pitching depth. After missing all of 2017 recovering from Tommy John surgery and then missing time due to minor elbow surgery and a rib muscle strain at the beginning of this season, Eovaldi has returned to post a 3.92 ERA, 49.6% grounder rate, 7.6 K/9, and a minuscule 1.3 BB/9 rate over his first 41 1/3 frames. He has received some significant help in the form of a .211 BABIP, a 79.6% strand rate and a .285 wOBA that is well under his .321 xwOBA, though ERA indicators (4.75 FIP, 3.59 xFIP, 3.57 SIERA) are largely in line with his real-world ERA. Eovaldi is also averaging 97mph on his fastball.

If the Yankees get Matt Harvey the Mets will have a heart attack
BrandonGregory74
I hope Harvey stays in Cincinnati but if he can get a return that’s good too.

If the Yankees get Matt Harvey the Yankees will have a heart attack. Don’t let anyone pretend to you that Matt Harvey isn’t decent again.
bencole
*is decent again. Point was Matt Harvey still sucks. There needs to be can option to edit your post here… it’s about time.

I didn’t watch Harvey pitch for the Mets earlier in the year but he has looked pretty good with the Reds of late. I don’t think anyone is claiming him to be the ace he once was but his velocity has steadily increased over the past month and his stats since being traded to the Reds are pretty good. He has been decent with the Reds.

If the Yankees get Matt Harvey, he may have a heart attack.

Interesting!

The Redsox need pitching depth, I think DD knows it. After the panic attack Price had pitching in Yankee Stadium, you can’t trust it on him for too much. I think E-Rod was panicking also. They need help, cuz if they are panicking less they will pitch better.
deal1122
That’s a good observation captain. If they panic less, they probably will pitch better 🙂
pasha2k
Price looked like he was having a legit panic attack. For Gods sale he was emotionally falling apart. He’ll it maybe good if he talked to Pedro for insight. The Sox have done well, very well this yr but Price can’t live up to his pre injury state mentally.
Bruin1012
I think pitching in New York is definitely in Price’s Head. Erod has, for the most part, pitched very well against the Yankees. He didn’t panic just had an off day it happens. His other game in NY this year he pitched well giving up no runs. Price has a mental block and seems to scared to pitch in New York now.
66TheNumberOfTheBest
So, he’s scared to pitch in NY, fights with his team’s broadcasters and gets hurt playing video games?
$217,000,000 well spent.
bradthebluefish
Right!? I can’t stand him. Never did I expect Price to be like this.
pasha2k
It’s right up there with the Panda signing…….horrible.
hojostache
You could almost argue Price’s contract was worth at least 70% of the value…the same cannot be said for Panda’s contract, which was a horrible overpay before the ink dried.
KD17
Bruin1012 – I like your optimism for EROD but I think we really have no idea what he’ll do in a pressure situatation in NY. Price, on the other hand, I think we know exactly what he’ll do so he needs to pitch games in Boston only. Other than Sale (who will probably match-up with Severino) I’m not sure we have anyone that can beat NY in NY. I’d give Porcello the best shot but it’s a long-shot. On the other hand, other than Severino I don’t think the Yankees have anyone else who can win at Fenway. Like Porcello, I think CC their best shot and he is a long-shot.
So to gain the upper hand if the match-up happens, we need to make a move. With 2 years and a 7M and change Salary, DeGrom looks like another Sale deal. If DeGrom goes in game 2 and Severino beats Sale 1-0 then you steal one in NY and have Price, Porcello for Fenway.
How do we get DeGrom at such a team friendly price? We offer the Mets EROD, Groome (still has value despite surgery), Chavis, Vazquez, Travis and Ryan Brasier (AAA relief prospect). The Mets need to restock their system and what better way to restock with a 6 for 1 deal. Red Sox fans probably think this is too much and Mets fans probably think it’s too little or they could do better elsewhere. Both can’t be right, so maybe it is a good deal for both.
That would buy us time to move Price in the off season and save $22M on the swap of Price and DeGrom for each of the next two years. DD would look like a genius if he could pull this one off!! There are only a handful of elite guys with respect to skill but there are 3 to 5 times as many guys with elite salaries like Price that don’t deserve them. Lets get a second top 10 SP. DD saw the value to cost ratio on JD and Sale, I have my fingers crossed he sees it on DeGrom. It would make September and October allot more fun for Red Sox Nation.
canadianyankee
Interesting perspective…now if you could just clarify how was it Boston mysteriously ends up with DeGrom?

What?

Probably that the Braves were scouting bullpen help more than they were scouting Eovaldi.
elmore80
Bump Teheran to long man out of bullpen and get Eovaldi. Would help Braves rotation alot
andrewgauldin
Does any team really need to go out and trade players for a guy who has a 4.91 era? I’m almost certain any team can find a guy in their minor league system that can do that or better.
bravesfan88
ERA isn’t the end all be all Stat to TRULY evaluate a pitcher. Not only that, you also have to remember Eovaldi hasn’t pitched alot since coming back from his injuries.
There’s a really good chance that Eovaldi is still working on getting his total feel and command of his pitches back. The fact that he’s showing such positive signs so early on is very encouraging news for Eovaldi..
Before his TJS, when he was in Miami, healthy, and at his best Eovaldi was, at times, a dominant pitcher. With time off to mature, get more into the mental side of pitching, and now, with a clean bill of health, Eovaldi could very well be on the verge of developing into a very reliable, effective #3-#4 SP for a team in the hunt..
I certainly wouldn’t mind the Braves giving him a shot, especially now that we know Soroka is going to be out awhile. Alongside Folty, Newk, Fried, and one of Sanchez or Teheran, Eovaldi could help stabilize one of the last spots in the Braves rotation. There are not alot of pitchers available with the pure arm talent of Eovaldi, if you can get him for a good deal, you definitely take that chance!!
CL1NT
Very true!
The more arms, the better. We will find out if Fried is the real deal soon. Tonight he has a tuffy against the Brew Crew.
Once Freddie gets out of this slump, and the Braves hopefully get some reinforcements (rotation/bullpen help) either from trades or minors, the Braves will be as complete as they have been in awhile.

Love to see Harvey go to the Yankees & implode …..
bravesfan88
Very mature of you…You’re giving Mets’ fans a bad name..He was once a Mets fan favorite, and beloved in New York, he was you all’a “Dark Knight.” Now, because he struggled, dealt with some injuries, struggled mentally, and got traded away, you wish for him to implode, and you want him to struggle?? …Real mature guy, I honestly hope you’re just joking. Although, I cannot say I’m all that suprised you aren’t..

HubcapDiamondStarHalo
Ah, got it. Since it’s something that “almost everybody has,” there’s no need to be decent and civil.
PopeMarley
What exactly are you quoting?
SuperSinker
Let’s not pretend decency and civility have been a part our culture. People said Sandy Hook involved crisis actors. Civility is dead. So toughen up.
NotaGM
Sox scoped out Nathen nut obvious no trade…the rival has been relit this year. If the Sox know he gonna be traded they will try to drive up the price. Shall the process begin.
start_wearing_purple
Why exactly would the Red Sox want to drive up the price tag of Rays pitcher? There’s no rumors about the yankees going after him so I don’t see the logic in the Red Sox making the Rays a potentially better team in the future by driving up the price of one of their rentals.
pasha2k
Cashman NEVER know what they will do. That’s why he’s so good. His team are quiet about moves, so it’s always a surprise when they get a signing. I don’t like the Evil Empire, but Cashman is an amazing GM.
morgannyy 2
Don’t forget the Red Sox are up against the 237 million threshold. Can’t acquire without relief: trade some payroll off, or acquired player’s salary is significantly paid for.
Johhos
Can’t see the Phillies interest in Eovaldi. Their only weak links in the rotation are a former Cy Young 25 million $$ pitcher and a young pitcher who while streaky, has given a few good starts.( Pivetta) .They have two guys at AAA waiting for their chance. Plus Eickhoff may be back by August 1.
xabial
Something to note: Cole Hamels’ Home/Road Splits
Road: 3-1 with 2.05 ERA in eight starts. (Opposition .203 BAA)
Home: 1-6 with 5.83 ERA across nine starts.
southpaw2153
As a Yankees fan, I’d rather have Hamels than Happ. Good post. Thanks for those splits.
SuperSinker
As a non-Yankees fan, we welcome the idea of the Yankees trading for a worse pitcher when a better one is available.

The Orioles are taking a new approach to this year’s trade deadline, rival evaluators tell ESPN’s Buster Olney. The O’s “seem much more focused, much more organized, much more aggressive, much more engaged” this season than in past years.
But, but, but Gary Thorne the other week said that the Orioles are in complete disarray from top to bottom. I went even further and said the whole state is in disarray from the Governor to the Orioles management in the Warehouse to clueless Showalter in the dugout, the players won’t even run through cheesecloth for him and right down to the local dog catcher in Baltimore. However Olney thinks otherwise????

Baltimore has badly bungled many trade deadlines…so I guess any semblance of direction should be seen as a big step forward for them.

Lefty, Hogan is doing a fantastic job!

The Orioles are a dumpster fire. One that I could grab a lawn chair and relax while it burns.

Not a white Sox fan but they went all out, or is it all in last year. Got tons of prospects. On the other hand there is nobody left to challenge Cleveland.

Yankees could be in on a reunion for Eovaldi. Couldn’t imagine that package being too costly. Couple low level guys?
elmore80
If the Braves do make the playoffs, Eovaldi would be a good fit in the bullpen. He throws hard!
Cardinals17
Cardinals Fans are looking at the Trade Rumors. Just hoping they would see the Cardinals tied to a trade for an elite hitter and elite starter. In the back of all of their minds is the fact that John Mozeliak won’t, or just doesn’t have the strong association with other General Managers or President of Baseball operations of other teams. Mozeliak can only get name only players like Dexter Fowler and Brett Cecil and over pay and over extend them as free agents. Other clubs seem to shy away from Mozeliak as the Cardinals representative in trading. Thus, he picks up other teams cast offs like Luke Gregerson etc. Please prove me wrong John Mozeliak!!! Put the best trades possible out there for an elite controllable hitter and an elite controllable starting pitcher! Prove to Cardinal Nation you are better than you’ve shown over the past 5 years!!!!
