The Yankees announced today that they have acquired international bonus pool availability from the Brewers. The swap will send minor-league righty Chad Whitmer to Milwaukee for an undisclosed amount of spending capacity.
It is not immediately clear whether the funds are from the current signing period, which ends today, or for the new one set to open on July 2nd. Baseball America’s Ben Badler has provided ample detail on the Yanks’ most recent international class and previewed the organization’s upcoming dealmaking.
Whitmer, 23, was a tenth-round pick last year who has yet to take the mound in the current season. He turned in 19 innings of 3.79 ERA pitching at the Rookie ball level (Gulf Coast League) in his debut campaign, allowing 24 hits but also recording an impressive 22:2 K/BB ratio.

Could be a wild card pick up like Freddy Peralta was
unsaturatedmatz
I mean so could anyone. If the Yankees are trading him for $ that means they doubt he’s got much of a future.
MZ311
Or there’s an international player they really like
jobusrum9
Freddy was definitely not a wild card. He was the headliner for Adam Lind.
You don’t trade a guy who averaged a 130 ops+ for the last 3 years for a wild card.
Jack Taddy
From what I remember the Brewers got 3 lottery ticket (or wild card) types for Lind. Peralta was in no way the “headliner” but maybe regarded as the best of the 3 at the time.
pdxbrewcrew
Depends on your definition of “wild card.” Peralta was a Mariners Top 30 prospect the year before, despite being 18.
The other two were lottery tickets. If Peralta was a lottery ticket, he’s one of those Christmas scratch-offs that seem to pay off more often.

Likely for the current cycle, which ends today. I don’t think teams are allowed to trade J-2 space in a future cycle.
Nice trade both ways, if the Brewers had nobody lined up today, which is the deadline.

Good analysis. Thanks!

I wonder why hasn’t Whitmer taken the mound yet in the current season
alb-3
Because rookie ball has not started yet.

Anyone know how much IFA bonus money the Yankees received?
tim815
Either $250,000, $500,000, $750,000, $1,000,000, or everything the Brewers had left.
oldhaus
I wonder about the player returns for bonus space? It’s still early on these trades, but I can only recall two players making it to the bigs so far – and only for cup of coffee.
Teams who sell space, seem to do it considering the low probability of Internationals ever contributing(the stars you’re thinking about are a small percentage), and unlikelihood they will use the space anyway.
floridapinstripes
Yefry Ramirez did okay against the Red Sox until the O’s bullpen blew up allowed his inhereted runners to score.
floridapinstripes
I’d also say Caleb Smith is probably the Marlins best pitcher now.

Teams planning on spending their full load won’t trade prospects for space. Many teams won’t spend their full amount.

23 year-old in rookie ball? Don’t plan on seeing him in the majors.
