The White Sox have released outfielder Alex Presley, per an announcement from the team’s Triple-A affiliate. Presley had been playing at Charlotte since signing a minors deal in late May.
Presley, who’s within a month of his 33rd birthday, opened the season with the Orioles organization. He has had trouble getting things going at the plate at the highest level of the minors, turning in 232 plate appearances of .238/.306/.314 hitting in his two stops this year.
In the eight preceding seasons, the left-handed-hitting Presley accumulated just over fifteen-hundred plate appearances in the majors, slashing a composite .263/.306/.388. He carried a 106 wRC+ output in 71 games last year with the Tigers.

Teams just aren’t going to carry a guy dragging around a .306 obp

The .306 OBP isn’t really THAT bad. The .314 slugging is far worse.
Stoneypoint711
Major League OBP is .316

That’s awful

He was oh so close to being a reg big leaguer. Just shows how hard it is! At he he can say he made it to the show!

He can say more than that. He did far more than just get a September call up. He may not have been a regular, but he still has over 4 seasons of MLB service time. That’s not a bad career.

I have always been in his corner since he was with the Pirates and it just goes to show that he had his chances but he never quite got the long term chance that he really needed to prove himself. This guy is relatively small and I think that that holds him back in many of management’s eyes.
Not everyone can be a star, but I would have taken his career in a second.

He obviously didnt get RAVE REVIEWS

I don’t dislike Presley. Seems like a decent dude but is there an organization he hasn’t signed with? Seems like every team has signed him at one point and then they release him a few months later.
Monkey’s Uncle
It might seem like he’s been everywhere but Presley has “only” been with 7 organizations: the 5 teams he got MLB playing time with (Pirates, Twins, Astros, Tigers, Brewers), plus the Orioles and White Sox this year.

The Pirates did not release him but traded him as the key piece in a deal with the Twins in 2013 for Justin Morneau.Morneau only knocked in 3 runs I think in September so they did not keep him but he won the batting title in 2014 with the Rockies. That was probably Presley’s best opportunity to get a permanent job.
