The Reds have designated utilityman Rosell Herrera for assignment, per a club announcement. That move opens a 40-man spot for just-acquired backstop Curt Casali, whose contract was selected.
It became clear yesterday that Casali would be moving right onto the active roster, as the team announced it was optioning Tony Cruz. Making things official still required another roster decision, though, and that waited until today.
Herrera, 25, got his first brief taste of the majors with Cincinnati after joining the organization as a minor-league free agent over the winter. He has spent most of the year at Triple-A, where he posted a strong .280/.337/.524 slash with three home runs in ninety plate appearances.

Not sure why they would DFA Herrera instead of just DFAing Cruz
Phillies2017
It’s the Reds
They traded Aroldis Chapman for rookie davis, Tony Renda, Caleb Cotham and Patrick Jagielo and then didn’t trade Cozart, nor even try to get a compensation pick

I mean, if you want to pick your sample, any team looks dumb. They traded Simon for Suarez. They traded Leake for Duvall and Mella. They traded Frazier for Peraza, Schebler and Dixon.
The Phillies invested millions in Ryan Howard. Ergo, they suck.

I won’t dispute you on the Phillies thing, their past front office was brutal. When I assess the Reds’ front office, I look at the team in general. They had some decent deals, but even a broken clock is right twice a day. When you look at the state of the organization as a whole, there is no end in sight for their rebuild, which has been going on since about 2014-2015.
I like some of their prospects too: Senzel, Siri, Long, Santillan, etc. but they missed a lot of opportunities to get value out of players who left for nothing or almost nothing, and that’s where I fault them the most,
Obviously this transaction in particular isn’t a huge deal, I was partially joking in my comment, but nonetheless, redsfan48 is 100% correct: the common sense move there would be to DFA Cruz.

The Chapman thing was unique. I don’t fault them at all for that deal. The new policy had little precedent and they could’ve lost Chapman for nothing, or even less than what they got.

I do fault them! That was a dumb trade, you don’t rebuild it’s those type of player! If they would have held on to Chapmen till the trade decline the following season they could have got a killing like the Yankees did when they traded him to the Cubs

Same reason that they kept a rule 5 catcher on their roster for all of 2017 then designated him for assignment this year so he could languish at AAA
