The Red Sox announced today that righty Steven Wright is going on the 10-day disabled list with inflammation in his left knee. Boston has recalled Justin Haley to take the open roster spot.
It’s not clear what the prognosis is just yet for Wright, but the fact of the DL placement is somewhat worrisome in and of itself. Wright missed much of the 2017 season after undergoing a cartilage restoration procedure on the same joint. He missed the first six weeks or so of the current campaign, too.
Wright, a 33-year-old knuckler, has been a key piece for the Sox since getting back to the hill. In forty innings over ten appearances, including four starts, he has worked to a 3.38 ERA with 7.0 K/9 and 4.5 BB/9.
If the knee responds well to rest, perhaps this won’t turn out to be a significant issue at all. If it’s more, then depth could begin to be a concern. Drew Pomeranz is still working back from the DL at the moment, but would be the top rotation option once he’s ready. Otherwise, Haley has thrown well at Triple-A but has not yet started in the bigs. (He has recorded twenty innings of relief.) The team’s other options with MLB experience, Hector Velazquez and Brian Johnson, are currently working out of the major-league bullpen.

Joe Kelly should start again
MetsYankeesRedSox
Can’t hurt
joshua.barron1
DEAR GOD PLEASE NO. ANYTHING BUT THAT!!!!
B-Strong
It can hurt, yes. Kelly would do what he always did. Go out there and throw as hard as possible trying to blow it by every single person, but would walk half of them because he has no command when he reached back for 100+. At some point someone would get a meatball down the middle and the deja vu event would be complete.
kenneth cole
He has a .98 WHIP… are people insanely negative because of the dunning Kruger effect or what?
slapnuts
No. They’re negative because there is absolutely no reason to believe that Kelly would be an effective starter. None. Every ounce of quantifiable evidence says otherwise
mookiessnarl
yeah, that’s a no.
deweybelongsinthehall
Joe Kelly is not starting again. ot would take too long to lengthen his game. Not a consideration. The team has time to see how serious it is but with a weak farm, perhaps the answer is to follow Tampa’s blueprint for now.
deweybelongsinthehall
Lackey anyone? Supposedly he’s in shape given his age. Just need someone to throw consistent innings in the last half of the year. If Price, Sale and Porcello remain healthy, those are your October starters.

noooooooo9ooooooooooooooooooo
pasha2k
Lackey was great when he threw his spit ball. If he could throw that why not?
deweybelongsinthehall
LOL. What other suggestions are there?
ray714
Trade for Big Sexy.. won’t cost much and Redsox don’t have much to give anyway. He will eat innings.
iverbure
For those of you who are suggesting joe jelly should start again see Daniel Bard.
Monkey’s Uncle
Actually, just look up Daniel Bard regardless. Poor guy developed one of the worst cases of “Steve Blass Disease” since… well, since Steve Blass. Made “Wild Thing” Ricky Vaughn look like a control specialist.
NotaGM
Great Job DD…times like this you get to dig in the depleaded farm system.
ellisburks
That depleted farm system got them Sale and Kimbrel. Not to mention their entire OF, ss, 3b, ca are from their minors as well as some of the pitching staff. But let’s blame DD.
NotaGM
Sale & Kimbrel…the same two that will be hitting free agency in the next few seasons.
You may argue we could resign but if we don’t? We no longer have a farm so that means we dish out mega money for aging players.
Dont blame DD is like saying he had no impact to Detroits current state.
I’m a Boston Fan but I do give props to Cashman for rebuilding a farm, keeping a farm, growing players, and still able to sign big deals/take them on.
mikeyank55
you are right Nota…ellis doesn’t understand how the Trader Dave recklessness always runs out of steam. He did the same thing in Detroit and they still have not recovered. Also ellis isn’t giving credit to the prior GM for drafting, recruiting and developing of a lot of the tree bait.
Bottom line is that the Red Sox farm system is bare.
joshua.barron1
Yes the farm system is Barron!
ellisburks
You don’t get people of Sale and Kimbrel stature for nothing and they got three years of control of Kimbrel and three of Sale. They didn’t give up prospects for rental players. And both have been phenomenal. He made a couple mistakes for hurt relievers but the other two make up for it.
ellisburks
Of course it is bare now. As I mentioned most of the offence is from the minors. You have to rebuild the minors if they keep promoting them. These things take time and the current ML team is good enough to wait out rebuilding the minors.
repboy1
How many of the prospects we traded for Sale Kimbrel etc have panned out? You seriously wouldn’t make those trades again?
kyredsox17
The Detroit problem is also due to a lot of money going to veterans that aren’t what they used to be. Let’s pretend this team kept their prospects and didn’t have Sale/Kimbrel. They’d be scrapping for a wildcard. Numbers aside the presence of both of those guys takes pressure off of the rotation and pen. When this window closes the Red Sox still will not find themselves in a Detroit scenery.
GaryWarriorsRedSoxx
You mean the Pawtucket Red Sox won’t be winning the minor league championship? That’s a shame.
We shouldn’t have called up benintendi and Betts and Vasquez. Should have signed McCann and Ellsbury instead.
GaryWarriorsRedSoxx
I just read an article that says the Pawtucket Red Sox have 3 all stars in The International League All-Star game. Not too shabby.
koolga
When you are in the top spots for most of the years (yes, a few down years with Farrell), they don’t get the top picks in the draft. Sox are usually down in the list for picking, so it’s understandable that they don’t have more prospects that are higher ranked. They did give up a few in the trades for Sale & Kimbrel, but well worth it. It will take a couple of down years to get the farm restocked, but as Sox fans, we don’t really want to see that happen.
MeowMeow
I think Velazquez should get the chance to start again. He’s been doing great out of the pen, and I have more confidence in him than anyone else who’s immediately available.
NotaGM
Absolutely, it would be nice for the Sox to ever figured out a way recruit SP that turn into more than a Brian Johnson.
gomerhodge71
Velazquez is pretty decent. He’s proven his worth. Kelly can’t start anymore. Anything over 2 innings and he implodes.
