The Rays have designated infielder/outfielder Rob Refsnyder for assignment, as Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times tweets. It seems that’s the roster move to enable the activation of center fielder Kevin Kiermaier.
Refsnyder, 27, received a forty-game trial run in Tampa Bay, his fourth-straight season with some MLB action. As before, however, he failed to produce at a convincing clip at the plate.
While Refsnyder drew walks at an excellent 17.5% clip in 103 plate appearances for the Rays, he managed only a .167/.314/.274 overall slash line. He’s a lifetime 68 wRC+ hitter in 423 trips to the plate in the majors.
Don’t even think about it… ^^
Wonder whos gonna pick up the best trade chip in all of baseball?
Tribe is always on the lookout for RH outfield bats. Only problem is, his has holes in it.
They got rid of him after spring training though and I doubt they see him as being better than anyone currently on the roster (although I wouldn’t mind seeing Guyer leave)
When CLE gave him a minors invite last winter it seemed like Refsnyder was going to be a depth option with the intention they were trading Kipnis. When Tribe found no takers for Kipnis they basically sold Refsnyder to TB for cash considerations.
Refsnyder has a .167 AVG and a .314 OBP. Amazing.
Despite Refsnyer’s sub-banjo hitter production, the silver lining is that his BA is 17 points higher than Chris Davis. That and the fact he’s a versatile fielder (and works cheap) are about the only possible pluses his agent can stress when he’s peddling Refsnyder to BAL.
I wonder if the Rays can flip him back to the Yankees for Judge, Stanton, Sanchez, Torres, and Severino before they lose him for nothing?
Only if the Yanks take on the majority of Stanton’s contract…
Would anyone trade for Stanton and his full contract right now? I doubt it.
lol, like The Rays are dumb enough to make that trade. The Yanks would have to throw in Andujar with Judge, Stanton, Sanchez, Torres and Sevy.
They’d insist on Jeter and Rivera as well with them going into the Hall with rays hats
Can you change the caps of players who have already been inducted? Maybe if the Yanks could hand over DiMaggio, Yogi Berra, and Wade Boggs, that might be enough to get a deal done. Along with the players mentioned above, of course
Boggs went in as a BoSox.
Refsnyder will go in as a Long Island Duck…..
Boggs went in a Tampa Bay Ray.
Hey downvoter prove me wrong arse
No he didn’t. It was part of his deal with Tampa to go in as a Devil Ray.
This just isn’t true and a simple google search will show you that his plaque has Boggs wearing a Red Sox cap. The Hall picks the cap on he plaque anyway, not the player.

The player used to be able to pick and this changed when Reggie decided to go in as a Yankee. Boggs was supposed to go in as a Ray but the rule changed before he was eligible for induction. I am dating myself but Carlton Fisk actually spoke of have a Nike emblem on his hat when he had issues with the Whitesox late in his career.
Thanks, I stand corrected.
It was a very interesting time. Rumors said that Mr. Steinbrenner paid Reggie handsomely to choose the Yankees. I don’t feel there is anything wrong with this- it is a business and that is how you build a brand. I was 14 and attended some of the Yankee festivities and it was great. They brought back the Reggie Bar and all involved made alot of money and gave the fans great memories. There were a lot of rumors that Mr. Steinbrenner planned the same thing with Dave Winfield and then the rule changed right before he was elected. With WInfield it made sense, his time in NY was very controversial at best- nasty, dirty and a blight on the game at worst-better he be remembered forever as a Padre.
I think this is why the rule changed- in certain cases like Reggie- it all works out. He is remembered by many for his time with the Yankees and ESPN did a series about it. With other guys you might be left scratching your head. Imagine if Boggs did go in as a Ray? 50 years from now the name Wade Boggs would be known for the question of “why did he go in as a Devil Ray” and not his actual playing career.
I was wrong so were you. I was going off memory something one should never do.
not sure if others chimed in but I believe it was not Reggie but Dave Winfield.
You’d have to three-corner the deal with the Red Sox so the Rays could get the other HOFer, Blake Swihart……
I was for the tryout as sometimes a player is a late bloomer. He’s gotten many MLB chances and will now likely have to hope for a MiLB opportunity and produce.
How is his average so high? I have seen this guy play and I have never seen him get a base hit. Wouldn’t Tampa Bay have been better off statistically to put a pitcher in his spot in the lineup? Not trying to be a ball buster but there are a lot of pitchers out there that can hit .200. This guy sucks.
His versatility has been his main calling card. Unfortunately he just hasn’t hit.
Can they let the pitcher hit and DH for him? Is that allowed in the rules?
The Rays are full of these versatile types the difference being this guy has no ceiling anymore. Sean Rodriguez is better and that’s not saying much.
In 2018, the BlueJays actually traded a good propect, Ryan Mcbroom, to the Yankees for Refsynder. The Jays genius thought they could make a player out of him and rebuilt his swing and tried him at 2nd and other position, and of course Refsnyder failed because he belongs in the minors.
Mcbroom is doing very well at Scranton. @!#$!%@^#**!&&.
Fire Atkins now.
The guy is the epitome of a AAAA player and has no future with the Yanks. #realisticeyes
I think the point is at least McBroom is doing something and still has some potential, where as Robbie Ref is as good as a pile of turd.
Of course Mcbroom will see very little Yankees playing time. He is quality depth for them and is a very good trade chip.
I agree that I would rather have Mcbroom than a Refsnyder.
Great trade for the Yanks. Cashman is the man.
He’s not a great trade chip. He’ll be a casualty soon.
What has Cashman done the last 10 years?
Your scouts eyes are failing you…lol
lol. Are you saying that I am seeing though rose coloured glasses? Thing about [real] scouting vs fanstasy and reading War stats, lol; is that it takes time to see if the scouting call is correct.
My track record over the last 3 years on MLBTR is scary good. Mostly around the Blue Jays but occasionally other teams and players.
For example, in spring training this year before any real game was played,, I called the Red Sox to win the AL East but the Yankees to wildcard and win the world series.
Hahaha
His walk rate will probably be enough to entice somebody to take a flier on him
Going crazy prediction here, Refsnyder signs with the Doosan Bears in he KBO. They recently released Jimmy Paredes and have one foreign hitting spot available. As Refsnyder is a Korean adoptee, this might be interesting.
It is not crazy- it makes alot of sense. I don’t see any other team MLB team signing him. He can’t hit and has proven this so he does not even have any value as a depth piece. You know what you will get with him and every team in baseball right now has a guy that can match Refsneyder’s production in the bigs at every position in AAA. He offers so little in the way of offense that I don’t believe any team in Japan would be interested either. It is either Korea or the independent leagues for him because he just can’t hit.
Refsnyder will best be remembered not for anything he did on the field, but his name came up constantly in Yankee trade rumors from 2014 through 2016. It’s a credit to a lot of scouting departments for not biting.
lol, all acouting depts except the Jays.
McBroom isn’t a game-changer; Time of the trade Consensus opinion of McBroom was platoon 1B. I don’t know if that still holds true after batting .295 with 10 HR, in 210 Triple-A at-bats, but McBroom also has 8BB and 60K in that same time-period.
He seems like a lottery ticket, dude.
Refsnyder has a 17.5% walk rate in 103 PA… McBroom’s 3.6% in AAA. (215PA) TOR lost the trade because Ref is no longer with the Blue Jays’ organization, but you’re still being really hyperbolic in your analysis of him.
