TODAY: The move is official, as announced by Rangers executive VP of communications John Blake (Twitter link). To create space on the 25-man and 40-man rosters, lefty Brandon Mann was optioned to Triple-A while Doug Fister was moved to the 60-day DL. Fister hit the DL with a knee strain last weekend, and now won’t be eligible to return to the Rangers’ roster until August.
FRIDAY: The Rangers will select the contract of veteran righty Yovani Gallardo, per a club announcement. He’ll join the team in time to make a start on Sunday, at which time corresponding moves will be made.
Gallardo, 32, enjoyed his last run of success in the majors when he turned in 184 1/3 frames of 3.42 ERA pitching for the Rangers back in 2015. Through 251 MLB innings since that time, he has limped to a 5.81 ERA with 6.5 K/9 and 4.5 BB/9.
Since coming back to the Texas organization earlier this year on a minors deal, following a very brief and unsuccessful stint with the Reds, Gallardo has taken the ball for ten starts at Triple-A. He has been in solid form there, working to a 3.81 ERA with forty strikeouts and 14 free passes.
The Rangers will turn to Gallardo with Doug Fister hitting the DL and Matt Moore being pushed to the pen. If Gallardo throws well enough to stick, he might help the team cover for potential trade deadline moves (or, less likely, turn into an asset himself). The Texas pen is also increasingly hurting, with Chris Martin and Matt Bush going on the DL today.

Lol he’s done

Rangers must be desperate for pitching.Just as well bring back Nolan Ryan.
CursedRangers
After the trade deadline it’s going to be a mess. Bartolo and Hamels both have a strong chance of being dealt. Will be a hodgepodge for a pitching staff
#Fantasygeekland
Oh geez yeah lol. It’s necessary though. I’m interested to see what Mendez can do
Solaris601
It’s gonna be ugly. That staff was a hodgepodge to begin with.

Hard to see Colon having any value

I forgot he was even in their system.

When Nolan Ryan left the Rangers organization they lost their “good luck charm.”

Nolan “The Express” Ryan helped build a competitive team in Dallas then in Houston. The results show that Jon “Train Wreck” Daniels is doing what he does best.

Love seeing Yo keep getting chances, great guy.
bigredsfan41017
He’s done, after the Reds released him he signed a minor league deal with the Yankees and opted out of that contract because he wasn’t good enough for the Yankees rotation!
mackows2
Never signed with the Yankees, just FYI.

Dude, Nolan was great, but he admits he didn’t have a firm grasp on the Rangers farm system and that Daniels built the team that competed for almost 10 years. When Nolan went to Houston that team was also already built, and he had nothing to do with it. I love Nolan Ryan like every good Ranger fan, but I also watch the entire system and can see the plan for the future. It hurts because we are going to go through some tough games, it won’t be like Houston’s nine years of horrible play to get top picks, but we will have 2 or 3 years. The bats are arriving, the pitching is two years away and could be sooner depending on moves this year. JD has stocked the store with things that have a demand and will bring back useful pieces.
The bad part is we might see some current Rangers traded in the division, but if they bring back some arms that are only a year away I’ll take it.
So in the end keep loving Nolan but realize he was a lucky charm and a face for the organization, he worked hard but he didn’t handle the roster that got them to the series two years in a row, that was JD. I will give you the Choo deal though, that was his fault but he was going for it and he was a top free agent that years , but that contract is an albatross.

Never discount a good luck charm. Keeps players healthy. Also what young pitchers has JD developed? My memory doesn’t go back that far. Thanks!

The issue is trading them away, by the way the Astros only developed 2 guys, Keuchel and McCullers in their starting five and they were both drafted either in the first round. Now if you want to argue why Brocail still has a job that’s a whole different thing. The worst pitching coach in the league, as soon as a guy gets on his staff he begins to regress. That’s a move JD should make ASAP, dumping Brocail could only help.

What Killer said!
Anyone who truly follows the Rangers knows what the case is.
We’re paying the price now for what we’ve enjoyed most of this decade.
Every GM who’s is their position for any time at all makes good AND forgettable trades.
Cashman, Epstein, Beane – they have all had plenty of bad trades and signings.

Those of us who had the misfortune of watching him pitch in Cincinnati know that he’s done. 85mph fastballs ain’t gonna get it done.
