The Orioles have activated lefty Zach Britton from the 60-day DL, the club announced. To create space on the active roster, the club placed struggling righty Pedro Araujo on the 10-day DL with a sprained elbow.
Outfielder Colby Rasmus was moved to the 60-day DL to make way on the 40-man. He has already been out for more than two months, so that’s a purely procedural maneuver.
Britton will make his long-awaited season debut as soon as this evening. The southpaw reliever was sidelined to open the year after suffering an Achilles tear in offseason workouts. He’s playing on a $12MM salary in his final season of arbitration eligibility.
With the O’s limping out to the worst record in baseball to this point of the season, the hope will be that Britton can pitch his way into a useful trade chip this summer. Certainly, he has established a ceiling that few others have ever touched out of the pen.
In 2015 and 2016, Britton was among the game’s very best relievers. He worked to a composite 1.22 ERA over 132 2/3 innings, with 10.4 K/9 and 2.2 BB/9. Even more remarkably, Britton maintained those excellent K/BB numbers while generating grounders on over 75% of the balls put in play against him.
Though he managed a strong 2.89 ERA last year, things just weren’t the same. Britton dealt with forearm/elbow concerns that limited him to 37 1/3 innings. He still posted a massive 72.6% groundball rate, but stepped back in K/9 (7.0) and BB/9 (4.3) as his swinging-strike percentage dove from 17.2% to 11.5% year over year.
It’s too soon to know what version of Britton will show up in Baltimore, but he hasn’t had any trouble generating swings and misses or worm burners on his rehab assignment. If there’s a positive from the layoff, perhaps it’s the fact that his arm has now enjoyed a lengthy respite.
Despite the questions that crept in, Britton was nearly dealt last summer. His potential value is much lower now, as a pure rental asset, though he can surely boost his stock quite a bit with over six weeks left to go before the trade deadline. Since he was on the shelf, Britton did not make the initial version of MLBTR’s top trade deadline candidates list, but he’s sure to feature on future iterations. And as the current list shows, Britton won’t have a lofty bar to clear to establish himself as the best late-inning rental lefty available.

And so it begins. Let’s not mess up trading Britton again.

The O’s haven’t messed up anything re trading Britton. The deal is largely contingent upon his being healthy and effective. If that happens the front office should have little difficulty getting a good return.
jdgoat
Except for the fact that his value has fallen exponentially. The return they get will be much worse than it would’ve been in the 2016 offseason

I’m alluding to Astros-Orioles trade talks, Angelos nixed in last hour.
O’s weren’t getting Astros’ best prospects, but… Colin Moran, would’ve been a good get. He was headliner prospect used to trade for Gerrit Cole, and every source confirms (Rosenthal, Heyman) O’s killed trade because of concerns over medicals (believed to be an excuse for Angelos’ meddling)
You can read more in-depth here, but it’s old news:
“That injury made Moran one of the medical issues, although Heyman reports that a second player had a separate issue. He notes that while the Astros assumed that owner Peter Angelos killed the deal, O’s contented deal was not presented to Angelos.”

Britton went on to tear his Achilles and the worst-case scenario occured.
Glad Britton’s back. If was a tough break, If Angelos learned a priceless lesson from waitin too long to trade Britton, wouldn’t you say, it was worth it?
brooksnumber5is1
It was the perfect opportunity to trade Britton. He was still good but obviously not the monster from the prior year, plus an arbitration figure of $12 mil. The trade for a decent 3B would have filled a big hole and Britton would have won a ring. Whomever nixed this deal made a very poor decision.

Araujo? Struggling? DL? Hmmmm…..sounds an awful lot like someone by the name of Chris Tillman…..imagine that
leggo chi
Glad that I’m not the only one thinking that!

Up next, Chris Davis out for season
Solaris601
I never wish injuries on anyone, but if Davis went on the DL and was out for the season, it would be a blessing.
Ironman_4life
Is it me or does crash davis swing at everything except strikes? When he does make contact its a double play grounder.
Solaris601
He chases until he has 2 strikes. Then he watches strike 3 and walks back to the dugout shaking his head and making faces. Sometimes he does top the ball right into the shift. Been forever since I’ve seen him even barrel up a foul ball. Some guys phone in their performance, but Davis isn’t even putting forth that much effort.
xabial
After today’s 0-for-5 performance, he’s batting .150 with .454 OPS and slash: 150/.227/.227 in 229 plate-appearances.
4 homers, and 4 doubles make his 8 XBH.
He’s owed about $114 million through 2022 for those counting down.
One Bite Hotdog
Wouldn’t that benefit the team?

It fits right in line with Ubaldo tripping over a hole in the parking lot and ending up on the DL.

lol Araujo to DL was exactly what I predicted.. just like Tilly. Down to DL if you struggle.
Solaris601
It must be stated in bold caps in the Baltimore Organizational Policies and Procedures that NEVER UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES IS THE ORGANIZATION TO RETURN A RULE V DRAFTEE TO HIS TEAM OF ORIGIN REGARDLESS OF PERFORMANCE.

Love ya Solaris; I enjoy reading your comments, but couldn’t resist ^^ mlbtraderumors.com/2018/03/orioles-return-rule-5-p…

Just genuinely curious guys… I brought it up cuz Solaris is well-informed. I find his analysis spot-on.
Maybe the O’s have a policy not to return Rule-5 picks, AFTER season starts? Either way forgive my ignorance ^^ 🙂
Only remembered cuz this Rule-5 pick, was returned to team I root for. Tough crowd >.<
brooksnumber5is1
When you pick up 3 Rule 5 guys and have one leftover from last year, then probably one or two will have to be returned. How about that timing for Araujo’s injury. Coincided perfectly with Britton’s return
jbigz12
And Araujo’s complete collapse on the mound. He’s probably close to fulfilling the minimum days needed on the active roster for rule 5. maybe we’ll find a phantom injury to keep him on the shelf until September.
brooksnumber5is1
It is just that Duquette overdoes it on Rule 5 players. Buck complains about the roster being limited by being stuck with one of these guys. And this hampers the progress of Oriole minor leaguers. They get left in the minors while Dan takes a flyer on a Rule 5 pick who may become the next TJ MacFarland or Ryan Flaherty. Rule 5 instead of the International Market-that will build your system.
Christian Larsen
Nestor Cortes Jr. never got that same treatment
Ironman_4life
So how much longer is Alex Cobb going to be able to stick around?
Solaris601
We’re approaching the middle of June, so the excuse that he missed Spring Training is no longer applicable. O’s would probably like to put him on the DL for a few weeks, but somebody has to pitch, and their options are pretty scant.

“Now that Britton is back for the first time this year, he can make his long-awaited season debut.”
Um….

“Britton will make his long-awaited season debut as soon as this evening.”
Right. 😉
Dan LeBlanc
Truly a one season wonder. Time for he and all of the naive general managers around MLB to chase past glories in hope of 3 months of greatness. . I only hope the Orioles can cash in on someone they should have disposed of two years ago.
Dan LeBlanc
Just sayin’
Mo Vaughn
Britton was one of the best closers as recently as last season before he got injured, and was even better the 3 seasons prior, how exactly is he a one season wonder?
jbigz12
Yes, he posted an ERA below 2 for 3 consecutive seasons. A span of 200 innings where he racked up 120+ saves. That has to be the textbook definition of a one season wonder.
IACub
Sprained elbow you say?

JaysForDays
Remember at the start of the season, all those Os fans beating their chests about how the team was a real contender?? Especially after the two pitching additions… yikes! As a Jays fan, I had no illusions about our squad competing for a WC but man… figured Bal would at least challenge us for last in the division.
brooksnumber5is1
I am a huge Oriole fan. However, there is nothing wrong with not being a homer. If I don’t like the direction of the team, I am going to express it. There are some on here that sound like Dan Duquette mouthpieces. This team has not had direction, even during their playoff appearances. Too many Rule 5 players, no international funding, not trading players rather than letting them hit free agency, and poor signings And then there is a GM who wanted to leave and a pseudo GM in Brady Anderson and an owner who nixes trades. Unfortunately not the Oriole Way anymore..
