The Mets have selected the contract of veteran catcher Jose Lobaton, as Tim Healey of The Athletic reports on Twitter. To open a roster spot, the team designated just-promoted righty Scott Copeland for assignment.
Lobaton already spent some time in the majors with the Mets earlier this year, but lost his roster spot after hitting just .152/.250/.239 in his 52 plate appearances in the majors. It’s certainly possible that this second stay will be even shorter, unless the club decides to keep three catchers for a stretch.
As for the 30-year-old Copeland, his return to the majors proved fleeting. Though he worked 1 1/3 scoreless innings last night, he was mostly called up to give the team a fresh arm. Now, unless he’s claimed, he’ll end up back in the minors, waiting for another opportunity.

I dont understand how this makes any sense at all
Phillies2017
Like I said about the Reds
It’s the Mets
I’m not trolling, there are just so many front offices that seem to have no clue what is going on.
-Baltimore
-Tampa
-Colorado (yes, I know they’re in first, but the run diff projects them to fall off)
-the Mets
-The Reds
-Detroit
-and I would argue the Giants
and believe me, I’m from Philly, I know an incompetent front office when I see one. I’m always willing to give credit where it’s due, the trades at the end of Amaro’s tenure were successful. However, McPhail was in the organization for most of the big ones, therefore, I have difficulty giving Amaro full credit.
and then there was Chip Kelly, which was on the same level as Dave Littlefield or Dave Stewart
Point being, nothing any of the aforementioned organizations do (in general) surprises me.

Yeah Baltimores long term and way over priced Cobb signing was idiotic

I’d like to see what your logic is on the Rockies’ front office.
Phillies2017
I have a few qualms with the Rockies front office. First of all, they spend way too much money on the bullpen. Yes, there are the Wade Davis’ and Aroldis Chapmans of the world that deserve it (and I liked the Davis deal, despite seeing it as a slight overpay), but people forget that most relievers are pitchers that couldn’t make it as starters, thus they bring a considerable about of volatility. I don’t believe it is ever a smart investment to pay a lot for middle relievers. I’m not simply using hindsight here regarding McGee, Shaw and Dunn, but if you look at the majority of expensive middle relievers, they don’t pan out a lot.
Also, they have a history of other poor free agent investments including the Desmond deal, which was questionable at the time it was signed, as well as the Parra deal, and I do not see the Blackmon deal aging well seeing as how he is 31 and now expensive until he’s 36.
I personally believe that in order to field a competitive team in Colorado, they should be looking at the top of the leaderboards in ground ball pitchers (Dunn and McGee are certainly not groundball pitchers). Bettis and Freeland are toward the top of the list, and I would rather invest in one very good groundball starter like a Dallas Keuchel then a bunch of expensive relievers.
Furthermore, I would have spent the money on a player like Arenado as opposed to Blackmon based on youth and potential longevity..
Also, they haven’t done a great job drafting after the selection of Rogers and if I remember correctly, Rogers was ranked #1 in most draft rankings or right next to Bregman and Swanson- all three of whom were can’t miss.
Their other selections: Nikorak, Nevin, Wall, Pint- they haven’t been very good and that is all under Bridich’s tenure.

Where’s Choo Choo Coleman when you need him?

Completely agree. I see it more as our roster sucks, no one good left to bring up so I’m carrying three catcher.

Sandy is a moron.

Mesoraco got hit ion the head by a Javier Baez backswing. It is possible he might be out a couple of days so the Mets needed a backup catcher.
Just saw the Mets starting lineup and Mesoraco is starting. You ,mean the Mets couldn’t find anyone else to add for a few days before DFA’ing him when Frazier is ready?
mikeyank55
At least they didn’t cheap out and make the guy fly the red eye flight from Vegas.
The only good news is that the insane obstinate Mets fans that defend everything with absolutely ZERO logic have already clicked on this site/app over to football.

Someone explain any of the comments above. The Mets used Copeland yesterday and wouldn’t be using him again before they’d have to send him down to activate one of the guys on DL. So, they send him down and bring up a bat rather than just waste a roster spot. They had exactly three choices- Lobaton, Dominic Smith, and Gavin Cecchini (Evans isn’t eligible to be recalled yet). This was a no brainer, next to zero consequence move.

Ha Ha There’s still hope for Danny Espinosa!

The difference between the Mets and teams that are successful is the feeling that the Mets exude that it’s always a business decision and not a baseball decision. It’s always tied to waiting for the a good deal or working within parameters of the budget. We know it is but quit saying it. Make a move once in a while for the purpose of baseball. This is the team that should be the flagship franchise of the National League, yet the minute a Machado or Harper is mentioned the Mets are out. With all the criticism of ownership there actually should be more. Fred Wilson may be a good man but he’s a lousy owner. He doesn’t get it. Say what you will about the Steinbrenners but while they swim in money it’s because they’re baseball and business people.
With the Mets Sandy just seems like their hack lately. Deliver us the bad news
As far as the lousy minor league system it’s obviously delivered some players. It’s cyclical. The difference comes in Latin American players which the Mets need to spend more time and money on.
Some teams have a culture of winning and some have a culture of losing. The Mets have a culture somewhere in between. The Wilpon culture.
mikeyank55
Tony, you are in denial. The Mets franchise has a culture of losing. Every few decades they catch a wind with a few players and ride into the post season. However real winning franchises take it all the way (Royals) where the Mets just came up short as they shot their load.
The Mets darn system is barren. This statement can be rewound in a time machine for the most part.
