Mike Trout is somehow having the best season of his already illustrious career, but otherwise the Angels’ top two players have been shortstop Andrelton Simmons and starter/DH Shohei Ohtani. For a Halos club that’s engaged in a tough division battle, then, it’s certainly worrisome to see both show up on the injury sheet.
Fortunately, there’s no reason at present to believe that either Simmons or Ohtani are dealing with serious maladies, as Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register reports. But Simmons, the club’s magnificent shortstop, has been placed on the DL with a grade 2 ankle sprain. And Ohtani, who was pulled after four frames, will need to allow a blister to heal up before he takes his next start.
In the case of Simmons, the injury grade indicates that there is at least a slight tear to a ligament. Online sources, at least, suggest a potential recovery time in the range of two to six weeks, though the club has not yet offered a timeline specific to the player.
Any absence is most unwelcome, given that Simmons is both fielding and hitting at top-of-the-line levels thus far. Fortunately, Zack Cozart is also an outstanding defender at short, though obviously the loss of Simmons will mean plugging in less-polished options on the left side of the infield. Fletcher says the club expects to utilize Luis Valbuena, Jefry Marte, and Kaleb Cowart (who was recalled after just being optioned) in some combination at the hot corner.
As for Ohtani, skipper Mike Scioscia says that the blister does not seem to be as serious as one he experienced earlier in the season, when he was able to make his next scheduled start. However, his status will surely depend upon how this particular injury heals up.
Even if Ohtani does need some time away from the mound, it seems reasonable to anticipate that he’ll still be able to appear as a hitter. And despite some notable injuries to starters, the team still has five other worthwhile options to go to in the rotation. Youngster Jaime Barria has pitched well in seven starts this year and is waiting in the wings at Triple-A if he’s needed.
Be nice to see some type of finger rubber they can put on their finger in time to prevent these injuries.
Pretty sure Al Leiter did something similar to that. Any time he was throwing not in a game he kept something on his finger.
Trout’s having the best season of his career, indeed. He’s even 13/13 SB. Hasn’t been caught once.
Not saying that’s what makes it, Trout’s best season… Just saying even the little things are coming together, what’s looking to be a special season.
John Smoltz made a great point on MLB network yesterday. What if in September the Angels are in serious contention, are they gonna keep this same rotation schedule, because it will effect the other pitchers rhythm for the playoffs. It could also effect the pitching rotation for a 5 or 7 game playoff series, and will the other pitchers voice their concerns. In other words do the Angels make the decision to have Ohtani pitch or DH in those circumstances. Smoltzie said it’s gonna be a difficult situation and can truly efffect the team.
It’s a moot point, since the Angels figure to have only 3 healthy SP by Oct.
Besides, no team works a 5- or 6-man rotation in the postseason. At most, it’s a 4-man rotation, with the 4th used almost as a spot start if needed. Otherwise, the top 3 starters will be used. The weird made-for-tv postseason schedule has Game 4 almost a week after Game 1, so it shouldn’t be that big a deal.
The Angels will be lucky to have this problem to resolve in 2018, given an inconsistent offense, and an undertalented and overworked bullpen.
Meant to say effect the other pitchers rhythm in a late season playoff run. When teams are in contention for the playoffs they don’t compensate for rest, it’s all hands on deck.
Roger that.
Blah Blah Blah. Their differential has them underperforming W/L ‘wise, the Angels are clearly a top 6 team in the AL and given the odds will likely take a spot in the second season.
What is by sept the angels are 14 games out and planning vacations.
If Simmons is expected to be out for an extended period of time, I think the Angels should purchase Ronald Torreyes from the Yankees. His versatility makes him a very useful piece for a team with a lot of injury issues and he is a very solid hitter for contact.
The Angels have David Fletcher in Triple A. They don’t need to trade for Torreyes. Fletcher on any other teams minor league system, would be getting talked about more. But since he in the Angels farm system, no one talkes about him.
Who do the Angels send to the Yankees?
Seeing as how the Yanks have no room for him, I doubt it would cost anything more than future considerations or a low level minor leaguer.
His struggles in his brief time at Triple-A don’t help the Yankees case for leverage either.
He’s proven at the big league level. I’m not sure you’re not thinking of someone else.
Yanks aren’t gonna let anyone pick their pocket like that. Try again or go to another team with that weak-sauce.
He’s too valuable to them due to his versatility, and he’s apparently well liked in the clubhouse, so they’re not going to move him for next to nothing.
Wouldn’t go so far to say he’s “proven” though. Tons of players have done well in 500ABs, then fallen off the map.
What do you think the return should be? The market for pretty average bench players won’t be that high. Plus the Yankees will soon have 40 man casualties when they start upgrading their team.
Trout is by far the best player in baseball. Harper doesn’t even belong in the same sentence, as many writers and fans like to do. Harper is extremely overrated. As a Yankees fan, I’m happy with – and would rather have – Judge, as he is also a better player than Harper. Whatever team gives him a huge contract this winter is a sucker. Glad it probably won’t be the Yankees.
Are you really a Yankees fan, or just trying to start something nuts?
Did you really just say Judge is better than Harper? Like did you mean that or are you trolling?
“Harper is extremely overrated. As a Yankees fan”
I see Yankees fans have figured out they aren’t getting Harper.
“I see the Yankees have figured out they aren’t getting Harper” yea cause this guy southpaw2153 speaks for Brian Cashman and the entire Yankees Organization.
Try again Casey…
I don’t know how Simmons hurt his ankle, but when I first saw he was hurt that’s what I guessed it would be. I’ve always been concerned about ankle problems for him the way he contorts it when he swings the bat.
He slipped and missed a step going into the dugout before the game started. Team knew about it, let him try the ankle for an inning or two.
He slipped down the dugout stairs.
Exact same injury just happened to Nelson Cruz- his plastic spikes caught on a part of the dugout step. He was out 2 weeks, he was still running w a ‘limp’ the first week back from his DL
I bet all the ones who gave me a thumb down, don’t even know who David Fletcher is. And are too lazy to look up his numbers.
David Fletcher is legit. Can’t wait to see him in Anaheim.
Exactly but he isn’t in the Yankees or Roid Sox system, so he doesn’t get publicity.
Yea cause all the baseball experts have east coast bias..omfg
Hey mr Angel what about the way they ranked Ohtani?
Fletcher is hitting .350 with only 16 strike outs. That with around 250 at bats. Other than one guy from MLB Network, no one even gave the Angels a chance to land Ohtani. Those same experts said, Nolan Arenado would have to move to the outfield. Because he wasn’t good enough to play third base defensively. Those experts had Ohtani ranked #1 before he signed. So spare me your bs.
You’re all over the place guy. Look at all the people who don’t agree with your takes. Yea I know they’re all perpetuating EAST COAST BIAS. lol
How has Simmons never been an all star? Dude is amazing. Can we please get him back in Atlanta?
Ok send Sean Newcomb back to the Angels, along with some prospects.
If Simmons is going to miss significant time padres should offer up Freddy galvis. Clear rental. Great defensive reputation.
I know the padres are in “contention” given the NL West is weak this year. But they should be sellers not buyers.
What would the Marlins want for Starlin Castro?
