Major League Baseball has announced that Padres pitcher Jose Torres has been suspended for the remainder of the season for violating the Joint Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault and Child Abuse Policy. Technically, it’s a 100-game ban that will be considered to have started on June 5th.
Torres has been on the restricted list all season long after he was arrested in February and charged with a host of crimes after a domestic disturbance. He stood accused of pointing a gun at a woman with whom he was in a domestic relationship, with criminal charges for assault with a deadly weapon, criminal damage, and intimidation as well as for possession of marijuana.
At one point, at least, Torres was scheduled to go to trial in July, but may well have reached a plea agreement. The league typically awaits resolution of a criminal case before issuing a suspension, though the joint domestic violence policy does not condition the authority to do so upon any legal action.
This ban appears to be the longest yet handed down by commissioner Rob Manfred. Previously, Hector Olivera’s 82-game suspension had been the lengthiest under a policy that was instituted in the summer of 2015.

Hope you get to enjoy some quality jail time, Mr. Torres.
ernestofigueroa87
Where does it state he’s going to serve jail time?
Judge Judy
Where did I say he would?

Try re-reading your sentence.

You should as well. He said he hoped he would. Not that he would.

Good riddance to bad rubbish.

Amen!

Forgot about him.. he had bright future but probably not anymore. Glad to see serious consequences in these cases. I applaud the Padres and MLB

Reading the report of what he did, it sounds almost exactly like what Aroldis Chapman did…except that Chapman fired bullets (8 if I remember correctly) and Torres did not.
How on Earth did Chapman only get 30 games?
Meow Meow
If I remember correctly, Chapman went to his garage to retrieve and discharge a firearm after an argument. That is, of course, bad and threatening behavior, but the article states that Torres actually pointed a gun at someone, which strikes me as being significantly more threatening.
Adam6710
It sounds to me like Chapman went into his garage and fired shots into a wall out of anger, and not to threaten or endanger. It was reckless and dangerous (and one reason why I am anti-firearm), but he didn’t point the gun at anyone or threaten anyone with the gun, as Torres seems to have done.
One is assault, the other is not.
getright11
THATS why you’re anti guns?
Travis’ Wood
If you could read you’d see he said “one reason”

Get off Chapman’s case. He’s in year-2 of his Yankees’ deal. He’s been clean, on and off the field since being acquired. This is old news. (Although I can tell you want Chapman to land on permanent Restricted list)
Use Bruce Maxwell (who just got demoted to AAA) pointed a (loaded) gun at a delivery woman, and unlike Chapman — Bruce’s ruling was a joke. (Got probation) Chapman got 30 day suspension — and served his time.
davidcoonce74
Please. No more whataboutism. Chapman is slime, Maxwell is slime, Torres is slime. Okay? None of them should be playing baseball professionally.
xabial
Yankees traded for Chapman Dec 2015. Been 2.5 years. This just happened today. Why are we still bringing up Chapman? Even charges were dropped. What Maxwell did, was much worse in my opinion. And got 0 suspended days? Lol
brucewayne
So now this crap is FUNNY?
xabial
What’s funny is Maxwell not getting suspended by MLB, brucey-boy.

So defensive! Typical Yankmes fan.
It is a legitimate comparison so just relax there Chippy.
Nobody on this thread is wishing any more ill will to Chapman than he earned.
Being an angry, violent, misogynistic douche is a class that many of these roid using players fall into. It’s high time the league took actions to protect the families that support the players & punish them when the line is crossed.

If I remember correctly, the charges against Chapman were dropped and I believe that was why the MLB only gave him 30 while it looks like Torres plead out..essentially admitting fault.
xabial
Maxwell also plead out! Why didn’t he get suspended?
davidcoonce74
Maxwell didn’t fire his weapon. Chapman did. You know this
xabial
Chapman shot it in garage and shot the wall 9x times. No one else in the room with him. The object of his ire, was the wall. Chapman’s entire case was dropped.
Maxwell pointed a loaded gun at someone. Maxwell plead, and got probation (worse than having case dropped) Worst of all, he didn’t get suspended. It’s a disgrace, people still argue Chapman “only” got 30 games, when someone like Maxwell got ZERO suspension by MLB. You know this.

Have you ever been in an extreme argument with someone and then had them shoot a gun? I have. Even if it is away from you, that is terrifying, traumatizing and escalates the situation: it can cause retaliation, or capitulation in a person who had been trying to stick up for themself.
No one should use a deadly weapon to vent their feelings, express themselves, or blow off steam.
During or after a fight is exactly the time to stay away from weapons because you never know what might happen. Ask thousands of regretful inmates convicted of murder and manslaughter if they wish they had better judgement, more impulse control, a little more time to calm down and no access to deadly weapons when angry — I wonder how they’d reply.

Too bad we didnt trade him last year at the deadline when there was interest.

Oakland’s interested in obtaining him….
