J.P. Crawford Out Four To Six Weeks With Fractured Hand

By Steve Adams | June 20, 2018 at 9:01am CDT

June 20: The Phillies have formally placed Crawford on the 10-day disabled list. Infielder Mitch Walding has been recalled from Triple-A Lehigh Valley for his second stint with the Phillies in 2018.

June 19: Phillies shortstop/third baseman J.P. Crawford suffered a broken left hand upon being hit by a pitch in tonight’s game, tweets MLB.com’s Todd Zolecki. He’ll be out for the next four to six weeks as he recovers from the injury.

The 23-year-old Crawford, a former first-round pick and long one of the game’s top prospects, has struggled to this point in 2018, hitting just .194/.312/.333 with a pair of homers, five doubles, a triple and two steals (in two attempts). He’d already missed a bit more than a month with a forearm strain and now, unfortunately, is headed for another prolonged absence.

With Crawford back on the shelf, the Phillies will likely give Maikel Franco and Scott Kingery regular at-bats on the left side of the infield. Franco has recently been relegated to a part-time role but voiced a desire to remain with the organization in spite of his reduced playing time. Now, with Crawford sidelined, he’ll likely get another opportunity to prove that he’s capable of emerging as the regular, middle-of-the-order presence the Phils envisioned when he, too, was considered one of the game’s elite prospects.

Of course, an injury on the left side of the infield only figures to further fuel speculation about the Phils making a run at the Orioles’ Manny Machado. Phillies president Andy MacPhail, GM Matt Klentak and assistant GM Ned Rice have all previously worked in the Orioles’ front office, and the Phillies have received scarce production from the entire left side of their infield as a whole.

That said, there’s been little beyond speculation connecting the two sides since the offseason, and there’ll be no shortage of other clubs showing significant interest in Machado. Realistically, given the lackluster production from the combination of Crawford, Franco (.243/.288/.416) and Kingery (.222/.278/.335), Crawford’s injury may not even move the needle much as far as the team’s interest in Machado; the club was already receiving poor enough output that it’d be logical to expect them to explore the possibility of a Machado acquisition with or without a healthy Crawford in the fold.

Knowing the O’s they’ll take Franco, Hoskins and every other bat first corner if/of with questionable defense in their system.

You’re implying the Orioles would be dumb to take 5.5 years of Hoskins for a few months of Machado, when it would actually be quite a haul. smh

Phillies could probably get away with sending just Velasquez to the O’s for Machado (though I think that’s a massive overpay). Then they could sign Machado to a 7-year extension. Win-win for both sides.

Nah, don’t think Velasquez is enough for Machado. Sure, he has upside but hasn’t proven much and has been given opportunities. Anyway, they should target more controllable players since they are a few years off. 3.5 years of Velasquez- they will spend most of that, if not all of it, rebuilding. Think about what Baltimore wants, not what Philadelphia wants to/can get rid of.

The Phillies will not trade the pieces necessary to acquire Machado at the deadline. In fact I think that it is becoming less likely that Machado will sign with Phillies in the off-season.

If Machado insists on being a SS only, his options will be pretty limited considering most of the large market teams are set at that position. I think the Cubs and Phils are the early favorites.

I doubt they will re-sign Machado and Kershaw. Optimistic Dodgers fans will say they can, but they obviously won’t. They’d be smart to keep Seager at SS and move Machado to 3B rather than the other way around.

Agree and disagree. I don’t think the Phillies will trade anything of note for him and if the Orioles insist on an elite piece in return they will need to look elsewhere this year. Klentak seems invested in his strategic plan. It was a plan that never included Arrieta which made it like pulling teeth to get them to sign Jake this year. That said I don’t think any other team will be able to grant Machado an everyday SS role and the massive amount of money that he wants this offseason. He’ll be a Phillie in 2019.

IF the O’s trade Machado (which I don’t see Angelos agreeing to no matter what the return), they’d probably want Franco and ML ready pitching prospects. That organization has no pitching at any level.

The Orioles are in the early stages of a rebuild so they should be targeting lower guys with upside rather than close-to-MLB-ready type guys. But knowing Angelo’s he’ll probably do the opposite.

The Orioles are NOT in the early stages of a rebuild. That would suggest that a rebuild has started. Instead they are in the late stages of an outright free fall.

Baltimore has tried unsuccessfully to hang on to some semblance of respectability and in that failed attempt lost all semblance of being a competitive team. They should have sold assets some time ago (and never bid against themselves for flawed players repeated times either).

They have one of the worst run organizations in major league baseball and unfortunately their fans suffer because of it. This looks to be part of a LONG dark time for Baltimore fans.

There is only one player out there ,in the near furure, who is a sure fit for the Phillies. Philadelphia is not the place to play for many players. Too much is expected and expected everyday and every play. That guy is South Jersey,s own Mike Trout. He could be available by trade next year by trade or as a free agent in 2020. And I know being at that Eagles parade last winter made him wish it could be him participating with a championship Phillies team instead of watching. The financial stars have aligned and it is possible that this could actually happen.

I’m not sore from the laughter this morning so it’s OK for Gabe to bring in Tommy Hunter this afternoon.

$9,000,000- this year and then…….another $9,000,000 next year for Tommy Hunter.

Tommy’s such a physical specimen too. It’s like looking at Arnold Schwarzenegger in his prime.

Hey, where’s Pat Neshek? Matt’s paying Neshek $7,750,000 this year and then paying him the same next year. He’s such a youngster too, Neshek will be 38 on September 4th.

It always blew my mind that Tommy Hunter got 18 million. I watched him for so many years in Baltimore and I never saw anything special. A fine middle reliever but 9 mil a year? The indians released this guy after half a season in ’16. He turned in a very solid 17 but that would’ve been no where near enough for me to sign this guy for 9 mil.

I think that the Phillies should try and get Britton. phillies need a reliever and he may be had for a AA prospect. I would take a chance on him and maybe can close for the phils. getting Machado is not happening, as well as getting Harper. huge phils fan but those two will not be a Phillie. I just don’t see it happening.

Last time I checked this team as currently constructed was not a WS contender. Let some noob trade for Machado. Then sign him when theres no draft pick compensation attached.
