Here’s the latest from FRSBaseball.com’s Jon Heyman…
- The Dodgers will continue to monitor Manny Machado’s availability, as L.A. still has interest in the star shortstop. Machado and the Dodgers have been linked in trade rumors ever since Corey Seager was lost for the season, and with Los Angeles getting back into the postseason hunt after an early-season slump, Machado continues to look like a logical trade candidate.
- The Indians are looking for the bullpen help, and they are one of multiple teams who have been in touch with the Marlins about Kyle Barraclough and Drew Steckenrider. Cleveland’s relief corps has been a major weak spot for the team, and though Andrew Miller will eventually be back from the DL, it isn’t any surprise that the Tribe is looking for further upgrades. Barraclough (who took over as Miami’s closer earlier this month) and Steckenrider are both having good seasons, though both have exhibited some control issues. The Marlins are “open for business” in discussing virtually everyone on the roster, though they’re less likely to deal young, controllable players like Barraclough and Steckenrider for anything but a large return. Beyond the bullpen, Heyman also thinks the Tribe could look for a right-handed bat for the bench.
- The Braves were one of the teams interested in Kelvin Herrera before the Royals dealt the reliever to the Nationals. Kansas City simply “saw the Nats as a better match” for a trade, and as Braves GM Alex Anthopoulos implied in a podcast appearance earlier this week, it seems like Atlanta wasn’t willing to meet the Royals’ asking price. It remains to be seen how this decision could impact the NL East race, as the Braves not only saw Herrera join a division rival, but their own closer (Arodys Vizcaino) on the disabled list today. Heyman does speculate about one silver lining for the Braves, however, as the fact that they’ve already had some talks with the Royals could help lay groundwork for a Mike Moustakas trade. Overall, Heyman notes that the Braves would prefer to wait before making any big deals, as the team still isn’t quite sure what will end up being its biggest deadline need.
- More on Herrera, as Heyman reports that the Astros didn’t make a play for the right-hander.
- There is “no chance” that the Pirates would trade Jameson Taillon, a source tells Heyman. Pittsburgh could yet decide to move some veterans at the deadline but Taillon seems untouchable, given his good season and four remaining years of team control.
- The Pirates had some discussions with Andrew McCutchen about a longer-term extension following the outfielder’s MVP season in 2013. At the time, McCutchen was just two years into what ended up being (thanks to a club option) a seven-year, $65.25MM deal with the Bucs. According to Heyman, McCutchen had some regret about signing that deal, which kept him from hitting the open market after the 2015 season and ended up being an enormous bargain for Pittsburgh. Further extension talks didn’t go far, however, as McCutchen and his team made mention of Joey Votto’s ten-year, $225MM deal with the Reds as a potential comparable.

Braves need to offer up Swanson in a package for Machado. Maybe he’ll get back to playing baseball and stop trying to be an Instagram model/T-shirt salesmen if he gets moved out of town.
bravesfan
Just stop. Braves don’t need to make a single offer for machado lol. Not even sure the O’s would want Swanson for him. They would want an entire package of our elite prospects, that might including Swanson. IF the braves go for machado, it needs to be in the offseason. Which I doubt they will do anyways
Zach725
Oh stop it. Swanson is playing gold glove level defense and has made many improvements at the plate. And almost all of this t-shirt work is for charity. He has done a wonderful job for the community.
ffjsisk
He’s an average defender at best, no where near gold glove level. And he can’t hit a lick. He has no stand out skill. The Braves need to trade him while someone still thinks he has potential. Tim Beckham 2.0.
RunDMC
Hmm…jealous of the hair, huh? I’m not Fan#1 of him but he hits 1.066 OPS with RISP and 2 outs and is the best hitter with runners on. Strangely he struggles to the tune of .191 AVG. He is little Bizarro Justin Upton, king of garbage shots. Beckham took years to get to the bigs and Swanson was rushed and has adjusted on the job. Sure, he still has some to go, but s great starting point.
RunDMC
**he struggles hitting .191 AVG with nobody on base.
means
Everyone wanna run Dansby out of town so quick. Didn’t Andrelton teach you anything?
Bubba 5
Swanson was a top pick not because of talent but because the D-Backs had to pick someone. At the time it was a lackluster draft. Like the Chiefs in football had the #1 and it was Eric Fisher or Luke Jockqel. The next year comes Andrew Luck. Swanson isn’t the 2nd coming of anything but a avg MLB player
Solaris601
Braves could match up with TEX in a deal that would send Swanson to the Rangers for Andrus ONLY if Elvis passes on his opt out at the end of the season.
brandons-3
He was very much a high-floor prospect and pick in a “weak” draft when you recall there was no standout talent. When the trade was made I thought had Atlanta held the top pick in that they would have selected Swanson (due to the Georgia connection and that he was a standout at Vanderbilt) or Brendan Rodgers (they loved their high school, high upside picks) and passed on Bregman anyways. Another mistake I think they made with Swanson was making him the center of the marketing strategy as a franchise face while 1. You had Freddie Freeman who’s was always going to be the better player even if Dansby maxed out everything and 2. He and Albies probably should’ve switched positions as there’s less offensive expectation from a second baseman and it wouldn’t negatively impact the defense at all. But you can’t market a hometown second baseman as much as you can a hometown shortstop. He’ll have a good career, always play hard. He’ll turn a few long singles into hustle doubles, get you the run. Swanson is a regular hustle player, not a superstar talent.
tonypro7
You Braves fans may feel different if the Phillies get Machado. He could possibly be the difference that wins the division for either team.
RedRooster
Braves fans want the Phillies to trade for Machado. Give up an impact prospect or two for a guy they will just lose after this season.
jbigz12
The Phillies have a real shot at signing regardless of the trade. If they wanna take a crack this year, that works too. Don’t think I would if I were Matt klentak but I wouldn’t necessarily be thrilled if I were a Braves fan and it happened.
RedRooster
That also means the Phillies would be able to sign Machado without trading for him. So Braves fans should still want the Phillies to trade for Machado because it would still mean they gave up impact talent for basically nothing.
Philliesfan4life
I want them to sign him in the offseason, the O’s would want Sixto Sanchez in the deal, no way the phillies do that.
RedRooster
Doesn’t really matter what the O’s want. They have no leverage in a Machado trade.
bkfansler2
Lol. Phillies.
Lefty_Orioles_Fan
I would love to have Swanson on the O’s
However the Braves double play combination is well… awesome
Swanson to Albies or Albies to Swanson is excellent
Why would the Braves want to bust up that party?
jbigz12
Uhhhh maybe because Swanson isn’t that great. Wouldn’t move him for Machado because they have next to no ham even to resign Machado but Swanson also isn’t an “awesome” SS at this point.
ffjsisk
If you trade Swanson you’re committing to Camargo at short for 2019 with Riley taking over at third or a FA. I’ve got no problem with that.
GoobyTheGoop
moron comment strikes again
bkfansler2
Stupid. Just stupid.
its_happening
The only way Atlanta could pull that off is if they had a AAA shortstop ready to take over in 2019. Then they can off Swanson and others for Machado. They don’t, so dealing Swanson would not make sense.
Knowing AA he’s not going to rock the boat this season. I’d be shocked if he emptied the cupboard.
GoobyTheGoop
You are what is referred to as a moron
jorge78
Votto’s deal. Ah, the good old days…..
Solaris601
Pirates have to be thanking God they didn’t fall into that trap. Votto is great, but that contract is a monster and a half. Definitely a monument to the insanity of yesteryear.
iverbure
It’s not a trap if you offer the contract to the player. It’s stupidity if you sign a guy into their mid 30s but nobody holds a gun to anyone’s head of either side and makes these guys sign deals.
kcbbfan
I think it’ll be another two or three or four weeks but I think Moose ends up a Brave. The acquisition cost will be low compared to any other legit 3rd baseman on the market.
bkfansler2
I’d love for moose to be a brave. I wanted us to sign him last off-season. Hopefully doesn’t cost much as likely just a rental. He’s played well enough to not accept that option year and I wouldn’t want us to put someone in front of Riley unless we were going to sign to multi year deal
66TheNumberOfTheBest
Don’t the Braves need a righty bat more? I could see them going after Beltre.
flippinbats79
I’m not sure it would take much more to get Donaldson. It would have to be good enough for us to forgo the QO and draft pick though
kcbbfan
I think the Royals would accept a couple of 18 or 19-year-old lottery tickets and I don’t think the Blue Jays would except that for Donaldson.
Solaris601
I gotta think the asking price for Donaldson will be modest. He’s on his second DL stint of the year, he’s been unproductive, and he’s a rental.
pt57
With the year Donaldson is having, is it a gimme that he would turn down a QO?
Solaris601
No way he declines the QO, and that puts pressure on the front office to accept the best offer for him at the end of July. TOR won’t want to re-sign him, and they’ll sell low and even pick up most of his remaining 2018 salary just to get something out of him. Donaldson couldn’t possibly be having a worse walk year, and in free agency he’ll probably be looking at 1 or 2 year contracts. The landscape has changed, and nobody is gonna pay you for what you were in years past.
66TheNumberOfTheBest
Donaldson would grab that QO like a life preserver and spend all next year on the DL, too.
iverbure
Lol you act like Donaldson is Cespedes Donaldson unlike Cespedes plays on concrete over half his games. See Vlad Sr or Andre Dawson today watch how they walk and tell me playing on concrete isn’t hard on your lower half. Donaldson is a gamer I’m betting it’s killing him not to be on the field producing right now.
Solaris601
You are correct. $18M+ coaster contract at his age? Pardon my French, but Donaldson better wake up to reality, get off his a$$, and start building his value or he’ll be on a barstool talking about what might have been sooner than he thinks.
diller79
Indians are garbage this year and should not trade Mejia or Bieber to improve this years roster as they have no shot to win the American League
andrewgauldin
You think if they include Starlin Castro with Barraclough will get it done for Mejia and others?
bravesandcrewfan
Absolutely not lol. Castro is too expensive.
Solaris601
Not if MIA takes Kipnis and his contract (which I don’t see happening).
jbigz12
Starlin Castro has no surplus value on his contract. Maybe you get somebody to take it And that’s a hard maybe but he moves absolutely no needle.
sufferforsnakes
Tribe has the 8th best record in baseball right now, along with an 8 game lead in the division. They’re also one of the highest scoring teams in the league, with an outstanding starting rotation.
I wouldn’t call that garbage, I would call it pretty damn good, especially considering the issues they have had with their bullpen.
Get your facts straight before you choose to rip a team you obviously know nothing about.
jbigz12
8th best record in baseball isn’t good boss. Their division is also trash. The tribe are built to win right now but they are big time underdogs right now.
sufferforsnakes
Hmmm, my math tells me that means 22 other teams have a worse record than them. That sounds really dang good.
But I guess some folks have to trash anything Cleveland-related. Have a nice day.
jdgoat
They’re also playing in the worst division in baseball. They’ve heated up lately but so far they’ve been a major disappointment this year. I don’t think many people are considering them in the same class as the Astros, Red Sox, or Yankees.
sufferforsnakes
How is being in 1st place a major disappointment???
The idea is to win your division first. That’s how a team makes the postseason. Then everyone starts with the same record.
What’s happening in the AL Central happens in all divisions at one time or another. It’s just their turn. Next year it will probably be another division. Plus, it’s still way too early to make conclusions. They’ve only played 76 games.
iverbure
Fact: Indians aren’t in a good division.
Another fact: mlb playoffs are a giant crapshoot and any team can go on a run and win.
While the Indians certainly aren’t the 2017 or 2016 Indians that’s a battle tested team who’s got a great manager, legit ace and two underrated superstars in a Lindor and Ramirez. Teams have won it all with less.
Now with that said I’m certainly not going to pick the Indians if the playoffs started now against either the Yankees, Redsox or Astros
Polish Hammer
The Indians are actually ahead of last years pace where most had them picked to win it all. And they’ve done it without much from Miller, nothing from Salazar and a revolving door in the bullpen and MASH unit in the OF. They’ll make the playoffs and would rather play the underdog role. They have enough to make some noise taking it Series by Series when you get hot and ride it out.
iverbure
The Indians also won like 23 straight games last year and that in all likelihood isn’t going to happen
Solaris601
Nobody can argue that, but everyone but CLE and MIN are rebuilding in that division, and the Twins are doing anything but capitalizing on that. CLE will win the AL Central easily, but they won’t survive the first round with that bullpen. They MUST acquire multiple shut-down relievers soon, and these waiver wire reclamation projects aren’t gonna cut it.
jjp
Multiple shut down relievers? You mean to go along with Allen and Miller? Because every team has four or five “shut down relievers.” One more reliable arm will be plenty.
andrewgauldin
What y’all think a return for Barraclough be from the Tribe?
bleacherbum
I think that Chang and Logan Ice are two guys that make sense in exchange for Barraclough. Maybe another piece but something close to that.
kenly0
Plutko and Bradley
Polish Hammer
Not both
Polish Hammer
One of their young starters like Plutko, Bieber or Merritt?
sufferforsnakes
Have you been following Merritt’s rehab starts? He’s not doing good at all. And I can’t see them giving up Plutko or Bieber. But I could see Mejia or McKenzie being offered. Wouldn’t surprise me if teams started asking about Tyler Freeman at Mahoning Valley. Remember last year, when they gave away Samad Taylor from that level? That trade bummed me out.
66TheNumberOfTheBest
Taillon is the team’s best pitcher, a fan favorite and under team control for his entire prime.
That’s not a player that is going to be traded (any time soon), even by the Pirates.
Mendoza Line 215
I wonder how rumors like that about Taillon even get started.Probably because he has not consistently shown the breadth of his talent which is substantial. The Pirates really need him to start pitching like the Ace he can be.
On the other note,I wonder how much money McCutcheon lost by signing that contract! He was still an all star after the 2015 season and teams were still paying the big and long term contracts.
Logan10braves
Braves
Logan10braves
Braves shouldn’t be thinking about trading for Moose. I’d rather take the loss of offense at 3rd and leave Camargo’s defense there. The offense isn’t the problem. It’s the pitching.
Solaris601
Braves need a veteran stabilizer who can lead by example, and I think JA Happ should be their primary target.
