With the Mets looking more like bottom feeders than contenders, there has been speculation that they could listen to proposals for two of their best players, co-aces Jacob deGrom and Noah Syndergaard. The 29-year-old deGrom is under control through 2020, while Syndergaard, 25, is wrapped up through 2021, meaning each would bring back a significant haul in a trade. Of the teams that could go after either, the Yankees perhaps stand out as the most logical suitors, and Buster Olney of ESPN opines that the Mets would have to strongly consider offers from their crosstown rivals. While it would hurt the Mets and their fans in the near term to see one of those starters thriving with the Yankees, the return they’d get back would ease the pain, Olney contends. Ultimately, however, Olney doesn’t expect a deal between the teams to come to fruition, and he goes on to name several other starters the Yankees could pursue prior to the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline if they attempt to upgrade their rotation.
More from the East Coast:
- Forget about seeing Blue Jays super prospect Vladimir Guerrero Jr. in the majors in the immediate future. The 19-year-old third baseman, who went on the Double-A disabled list this week, has a strained patellar tendon in his left knee, Gregor Chisholm of MLB.com tweets. The Jays will bring Guerrero along slowly in his recovery and re-evaluate him in four weeks, Chisholm adds. The injury has derailed an incredible year for Guerrero, who pushed for a major league promotion with a .407/.457/.667 line and 11 home runs in his first 235 Double-A plate appearances.
- Nationals second baseman Daniel Murphy could come off the DL and make his 2018 debut Tuesday, Mark Zuckerman of MASNsports.com reports. Murphy has been working back from the right knee surgery he underwent last October, and while he hasn’t been at full speed during his Double-A rehab games, the assignment’s only allowed to continue through Thursday. Thus, with the Nats set to play in AL parks from Tuesday through Sunday, they could opt to bring Murphy back and use him as a designated hitter for the week.
- Third baseman Maikel Franco has lost his grip on an everyday job, the latest sign that his days with the Phillies may be numbered, Todd Zolecki of MLB.com observes. Franco and fellow third base options J.P. Crawford and Scott Kingery have each offered poor production this year, so the Phillies may seek an outside solution at the hot corner by the deadline and/or in the offseason, posits Zolecki, who suggests that Franco could be dealt thereafter. For now, even though Franco’s not accustomed to a part-time role, the 25-year-old tells Zolecki that he’s trying to make the best of it. Regardless of whether Franco sticks with the Phillies, the career .247/.299/.425 hitter has two more arbitration-eligible seasons remaining after this one.

Getting ready to call out the first dummy
mtnorth5
you already have.
dirtydan
You have so little to do in you’re life that you have to wait for people to comment on baseball articles and insult them. You’re the real dummy, sorry friend.
callingoutdummies247
That’s right Dirty Dan, I have zero to do. So I trigger morons before they start. It’s obvious I got two. You being one. (Felt the need to spell it out)
Dodgethis
Sorry but those of us who have been alive more than a few years already know all the tricks. You get tripped up and attempt to change direction, as if that was your intention all along. Try again.

MB923
The Mets would trade Jacob DeGrom and Thor for Chris Davis and Alex Cobb before they’d consider trading either of them to the Yankees.
cspaced25 2
Oh every one stop the talk now clearly MB923 owns the Mets and knows.
CubsFanForLife
Wilpon despises the Steinbrenner family, so I think OC’s point – that the Mets are unlikely to trade their star pitchers to the Yankees – is probably exagerated, but still valid.
MB923
^ This. I didn’t think it would be that complicated. Clearly being sarcastic and I’m sorry that only CubsFanForLife understood my point, which was The Wilpon’s would never trade a star player to the Yankees.
kingjenrry
The Yankees should just go out and get Bumgarner. It’d be easier to swing that trade.
MB923
The Giants won’t trade him since they’re competing in the NL West.
Kayrall
Things could go south for the Giants quickly. I could see the Yankees holding out a while in hopes that he becomes available.
hansel2525
Not unless they offer Gleyber in a deal.
Eric F
The Yankees are the only team that could offer the Mets the package they would want for either of them. If the Yankees offer Frazier Zack Zehner and Freicer Perez the Mets would be insane to pass it up.
pasha2k
I have no comment about the Evil Empire.
everlastingdave
Yes you do.
acarneglia
Honestly Alderson does this all the time to the Mets. He refused last year to make deals with the Yankees for Walker and Duda when the Yanks could’ve given them much better returns.
reflect
It wasn’t Alderson that refused. Wilpons refused due to the lack of cash coming back in the deals.
kingjenrry
Duda and Walker aren’t exactly deGrom or Syndergaard, and the Duda and Walker returns are doing pretty well in the Mets’ system right now.
mikeyank55
Doing well in the Mets system right now means, “statistically the players are doing well in a league and location that over inflates their AAA players.”
Birch
I know you think that you’re entertaining when you consistently rip the Mets, but you should do some homework once in a while. Duda and Walker were traded for pitchers, which by your acknowledgement, would make them better for pitching well in a hitter-friendly park and league. Besides, Hanhold has been trash in Vegas anyway. Smith has been very good, though.
CowboysoldierFTW
You take the best return no matter who it’s from.
Adam6710
Depends. If the Yankees and Mets were division rivals, I would be less likely to support a proposed deal between them.
Solaris601
Franco and a top 20 prospect to TOR for Josh Donaldson? Given Donaldson’s health, performance, and rental status a case could be made for a straight up trade for just Franco.
bigdaddyt
As a jays fan I would be very happy with that trade, say an A ball starter and Franco for jd sounds fair
rhymo
It’s not too bad. Jays front office will want to wait until JD proves he can stay healthy and his stock rises first. I don’t mind that but only thing is Franco sticks around for a few years and where does vlad go? He’s developing his defence at third only to have another guy step in too? I’m not sure that’d be that best option if we want to see vlad sooner than later.
its_happening
I’d take it if I were the Jays at this point. I just don’t see Philly making this move because they aren’t going anywhere this year. They aren’t ready to take the leap this year.
dirtydan
Doesn’t make sense for the phils right now. Donaldson has been hurt all year and as long as he’s not healthy I don’t see him bringing back a top 20 prospect
kingjenrry
The Mets should obviously listen on deGrom or Syndergaard – they’re 7 or 8 games under, the roster isn’t well-constructed, and the farm system lacks impact talent. Additionally, deGrom’s not getting any younger and a single injury would torpedo his trade value AND his value to the Mets.
gorav114
Sounds like Philly is going to get the Machado trade value going. Machado plays a mean 3rd though he’d probably have to agree on playing there before the deal
kingjenrry
Whether or not they trade for him this season, the Phillies are one of the two teams I see as pushing hardest for him in free agency. The other are the Braves. Both are young, competitive teams with tons of talent, payroll space, and a need on the left side of the infield.
Ronk325
The two teams who could offer the Mets the best packages for deGrom or Syndergaard right now are the Yankees and the Braves. Would the Mets really trade within their own division before they trade to their crosstown rival who they only play a few times a year?
Roll
my answer is Kelly Johnson
theunknownbandit
Wait, you saying we traded for Kelly Johnson again!? Hey, welcome back, Kelly! We missed you last year!
Ronk325
Kelly Johnson doesn’t even remotely compare to Jacob deGrom. Trading deGrom to a division rival rather than sending him to the team you share a city with we set a new precedent for how stupid the Mets front office can be
pjmcnu
Trading Syndergaard makes little sense. He’s got so much control left, he’ll be around when the supposed rebuild should be over (and if it’s not, it’s failed). And what’s the return going to be? 3 great prospects that at best will yield 1 Syndergaard? If he was about to leave or make $20M during Year 1 of the rebuild, maybe. But now? Stupid. It’s just the mentality some fall into that a rebuild means getting rid of everything of value, regardless of the individual situation.
forstyle
it’s because the fact that the Mets don’t appear to be ready to contend while Thor is there. they have him for three more years but the Braves and Phillies are looking like they are opening strong contention windows, making it more doubtful that the Mets contend in the next 3 years.
If you can get some high level prospects now to kick start a rebuild, why wouldn’t the Mets do so? the longer he is in team, the more risk the Mets have and the more his value will diminish because of the amount of time he has left before free agency. the Quintana, Sonny Gray, and Chris sale deals all pulled massive prospects because of the time remaining on their contracts. why should the Mets struggle to be a .500 team for 3 more years with Thor when they can trade him and try to be a contender in 3 or 4 years with the prospect return.
they don’t have to trade him, it just makes little sense, the more they struggle, to keep him around for nothing basically.
mikeyank55
Hey pjmcnu:
The supposed rebuild should be over?
Lol
NCYankee
Who else do they have to offer to get the return they need to start a legitimate rebuild other than DeGrom and Syndergaard?
julyn82001
I think if the Mets call A’s Billy Beane about Kris Davis he would probably listen to a package involving both DeGrom and Syndergaard. You don’t find that kind of
Power around the corner anyway…
rocky7
Finding that kind of power isn’t going to help the Mets win anything…..just lose by 1 less run every time out.
That’s an awful return for the Mets…..either pitcher is worth far more than a 1 dimensional player that has trouble making consistent contact.
Kris Davis is another A’s player playing under no pressure every year, wailing away for the fences each and every time he comes up.
dave13
That’s gotta be a joke or troll attempt right? Davis as a headline for DeGrom AND Syndergaard hahah coming off 2017 where power was up across the whole league and that trend has continued in 2018.
That makes zero sense for the Mets and honestly one of the most ridiculous trades offered up in this forum which it’s quite the feat. Congratulations you take the crown.
Two aces with 2.5 and 3.5 years of control left for a headliner of Davis with 1.5 years hahahaha
dellarocco72
Yankees will trade Frazier for Hamels and he’ll be mediocre and then get hurt.
Anthony maresca
Come again, Hamels won’t come close to netting Frazier in a trade even if the Rangers ate his remaining salary!
KnicksFanCavsFan
It’s interesting just because it would seem they have pieces to spare, that wouldn’t really effect the Yanks current core, that could help the Mets. Bear with me…
Clint Frazier-5 years of control.
Tyler Austin-5 years of control. Destroys RH pitching and could platoon this year with Agonz.
Brandon Drury- 3 years of control and young. Can play 2B or 3b. Allows you to shop TFrazier or Cabrera if they choose.
Jonathon Holder- Rising power arm out the pen. Has great minor lge track record and has been lock down coming out the Yanks pen.
Justin Sheffield or two of Chance Adams, Domingo Acevedo or Dillon Tate
Anthony maresca
Frazier, Drury and Sheffield would easily be enough to trade for DeGrom however I don’t think Cashman will be willing to offer two mlb players already proven in addition to a top lefty pitching prospect all with 15 yrs of control
Roll
You also have to factor in that deGrom has proven he can handle new york which is a big plus also deGrom is the face of the franchise which brings in more dollars for the mets so they will have to overpay not only for that but because it is a yankee met trade. Frazier and Drury are kind of have no place right now with torres and andujar coming up and having judge stanton hicks gardner and ugh Ellsbury out there..
southbeachbully
I’m a Yanks fan and I think the only thing that keeps Clint Frazier from being thought of as a top 50 prospect is the fact that he simply had too many ABs when they called him up last year. I also think that Tyler Austin simply needs 500 ABs for him to develop into a solid 20-25 hr guy. That being said, DeGrom and Syndegard are both top 8 pitchers in the game right now and both have at least 2-3 years of control. They are going to cost any team, and rightfully so. It might erode some of our depth but we can pick up the slack if needed with Walker and some of the guys in the minors. It wouldn’t be great depth but good enough. The only plus that I see for the Mets, with the package I mentioned, was that several of those guys have had some level of success or exposure to mlb performance and have levels of success, have in most cases, 5 years of control and are ready to plug in to the major league team. They can also get 1 or 2 pitching prospects that are no more than 1 or 2 years away. So it would’t be a complete rebuild for them.
slider32
The Mets are a mess, they shouldn’t trade anybody until they clean house. Alderson needs to go first. They have missed their window. I don’t think Cashman thinks Hamels is any better then Gray right now so they will look to trade for a young controllable pitcher like Dakota Hudson of the Cards, or Soroka of the Braves.
dave13
Do you realize how much it would cost NY to get Soroka?
sluman46953
lets face it .. there will be no degrom or syndergaard trade to yankees braves nationals phillies or marlins… nuff said !!
Anthony maresca
Agree….Mets simply won’t trade with Yankees no matter how good the pkg may be. In fact, with quality pitching in demand and most teams not willing to trade pitching given they are still in the race for playoffs, it would not surprise me Yankees end up with an innings eater type such as Hamels, Ross or pray one of the minor league options pan out
Anthony maresca
As a Yankee fan , I am stunned this team is 42-18 given the middle of the order since May 1st has been non existent. Sanchez , Bird have been aweful. Judge, Stanton and Didi been so-so but the reality is the offense has not clicked altogether this year yet. Sanchez has looked very bad offensively and defensively you have to wonder would Yankees be wise to dangle Sanchez in a trade for a starter and stay with Romine as their everyday catcher. This team is too dependent on the HR, too many K’s and Boone needs to move Torres in 2 hole slotting Judge 3rd and Andujar in 5 hole pushing Bird to 7th. Forget the righty and lefty balance in the lineup as you need you best contact hitters in the top of the lineup with your struggling players in the bottom until they heat up.
its_happening
Yanks went 11-2 against a very weak AL Central, beaten teams they are supposed to and played well against good teams. That’s how they got to 42-18. But you’re right, if some of the guys don’t turn it around there could be problems ahead.
KD17
The Cubs need DeGrom and have the depth in their minors to outbid the Yankees, especially if the Yankees are taboo to trade with. The Cubs can offer the rare combination of major league players and prospects for DeGrom. They could include Baez in the deal and not need much from their minors. They could include Almora and Russell in a deal. They can throw in a Chatwood who is young and improving.
The Dodgers are in the same boat and need DeGrom more than the Cubs. Both organizations have better things to offer than the Yankees would be willing to offer. Unless Judge, Sanchez or Torres is in the deal, the Yankees can’t compete with the Cubs and Dodgers and I don’t see the Yankees parting with any of those three even though Sanchez is off to a miserable start. (You can blame me for his start, I picked him in 3 leagues with my second pick and he’s completely jinxed!!)
thegreatcerealfamine
Your trolling is pathetic. The lack of knowledge you have on these three teams is just embarrassing as hell for you. Go worry about the Sox weak ass farm.
Steven Chinwood
That’s really, really lame KD17. Yankees have a top 5 farm. Oh You’re a Red Sox fan so I get it.
rwdavis22461
I am far from being a athlete but with that said i do not think its fair for anybody to say that Cespedes is stealing money i really do believe he is hurting . If you want to take shots at the WIlpons by all means we all do . But i do not think Cespedes is taking money and rather not play i really do believe with his build he is prone to injurys unfortunately for him and for the team its too many but to say he is not trying to get back to the field healthy is wrong of any Mets fan to believe. Some guys do not have luck with injuries
sluman46953
rw i cant agree. the mets are a mess and it starts with cespedes. 2017 and 2018 dl more then game played. if he went under the knife say like david wright id understand . but his situation is not a 2 year injury… pay me his money youll see me in left field every day …
majorflaw
“ . . . pay me his money you’ll see me in left field every day …”
As an added advantage nobody will be able to tell from your performance when you’re injured.

How Much Will It Help If Either Now Or Sometime Before His New York Yankees Host The Boston Red Sox On June 29 For A 3 Game Series At Yankee Stadium,Brian Cashman Trades Albert Abreu,Domingo Acevedo,Clint Frazier & Estevan Florial For Either Madison Bumgarner,Cole Hamels,Patrick Corbin,James Paxton,Danny Duffy,Jacob DeGrom,Chris Archer,Felix Hernandez,Tyson Ross Or Michael Fulmer?
