The Cubs were hopeful they’d be getting right-hander Yu Darvish back in the near future, but his return to the active roster will now be further delayed, it seems. Manager Joe Maddon told reporters (Twitter link via the Sun Times’ Gordon Wittenmyer) that Darvish’s latest bullpen session “did not go well,” adding that the righty will be reevaluated after he “felt pain on extension.” ESPN’s Jesse Rogers adds that the pain Darvish felt was beyond the normal soreness that might be expected when working back from an injury.
It’s been a month since the Cubs placed Darvish on the disabled list due to discomfort in his right biceps, and it doesn’t seem like the organization is sure exactly when he’ll be cleared to return to the rotation. Darvish will clearly need to ramp up on some form of rehab assignment before returning, and speculatively speaking, today’s setback makes it seem unlikely that he’ll be able to do so before the All-Star break.
Left-hander Mike Montgomery has stepped up nicely in Darvish’s place, working to a pristine 2.02 ERA in 35 1/3 innings across six starts since joining the rotation. While he’s not likely to continue at that pace, of course — fielding-independent metrics peg him in the upper-3.00s or low-4.00s in that time due largely to a .208 BABIP and an unsustainable 83.7 percent strand rate — Montgomery has certainly done enough to make the Cubs think hard about giving him a longer look in the rotation.
General manager Jed Hoyer spoke on that very subject earlier today on 670 The Score in Chicago, stating that Montgomery has “earned” an opportunity in the rotation with his high level of performance. Just how the Cubs will navigate that arrangement remains to be seen. Tyler Chatwood’s control has been an issue all season, and righty Kyle Hendricks has struggled badly in the month of June, posting a 7.03 ERA over five starts. If both Chatwood and Hendricks turn things around, and Darvish ultimately returns to good health, it’s plausible that Chicago could utilize six starters through the season’s second half. If not, perhaps Montgomery will get a longer-term look over one of the struggling arms currently in the rotation.
Of course, a hypothetical scenario in which the Cubs have six healthy and effective rotation options is a long ways from reality at this point, and the coming days will serve to inform as to just how plausible that scenario is. Said Maddon of the Darvish setback (Twitter link via The Athletic’s Patrick Mooney): “Over the next couple days, we’ll try to figure out the next course of action. He’s so important to us and our success. We just got to try to figure it out for him and for us. He knows he’s got our support.”

Another disastrous Epstein signing.
kboroczk
He was a starter I wanted to avoid but got stuck when I didn’t pull the trigger on others earlier in my auction NL-only draft. I had hoped to flip him shortly after he came back but now that’s toast……
Cubby
Epstein has been horrible for the Cubs. Except for drafting, trading for or signing players who helped them reach three straight NLCS and win the World Series for the first time in 108 years. Yeah, just horrible.
justinept
Yea. I wish we still had Hendry…

Bring back Dallas Green
pt57
I don’t think Dallas Green got a fair shake.
He knew the Cubs needed a rebuild ans started down that oath before he was fired.
24TheKid
He didn’t say Theo is a disastrous gm or whatever his position is. Just not good at signing free agents.
jaysfan1994
Fowler, Lester, Lackey, Ross all put up some surplus value when they won their World Series.
Cubby
Zobrist wasn’t a bad free agent signing either. It’s not all about the splash signings that may not all pan out. The under the radar signings are often more important than the occasional whiff.
chitown311
Lets talk about surplus value in Ross, Fowler, Lackey etc. But let’s not talk about Edwin Jackson, Jason Heyward, Chatwood, Yu Darvish. Not to mention trading away DJ LeMaheiu, Gleyber Torres, Eloy Jimenez, Dylan Ceas etc. Come get ya cubbie koolaid!
B-Strong
You cant really mention Torres because thats a hindsight comment that ignores the fact that it resulted in a championship.
chitown311
Indirectly yes, but the overpay of talent will forever exist.

Oh brother here we go again. 1 measly championship in 110 years. Even a blind squirrel

No one (certainly I) never said that he was a horrible GM. He has, however, a long track record of not so stellar — and in several cases really bad — moves and signings. To paint him as beyond reproach for having won the World Series he has (a great accomplishment) is to ignore the fact that he , like so many other GM’s who get impulsively lambasted, is at times a questionable decision maker who has also benefited from his share of luck (just as you could say that those GM’s who have not won the World Series in many cases have not received the same said luck). Bottom line: the guy has been given a free pass on way too many things. Some of that is justified (he has won multiple titles for his respective clubs) and some of it, as I’m stating clearly here is not.
Anthony Princeton
Not sure who you are responding to, but nobody is saying Theo has been a terrible GM. But, Heyward, Darvish and Chatwood were given $348m total and have produced 1.5 WAR combined for 2018. This is with Heyward showing some signs of life and highlights how terrible he has been. Almora (1.7 WAR), who has 1 less PA than Heyward this season has been more valuable than all 3 players combined. Although, the Cubs FA signings under Theo have still been better than their ability to produce homegrown pitching, which has been virtually nonexistent.

Hahah. You suck at baseball

Just another reason for the Cubs to try and go after syndergaard or degrom at the trade deadline
simschifan
No. Come on. They don’t have anything near what it would take
johnrealtime
they definitely have it but they are not likely to part with it
ShieldF123
They have it in the majors already, they absolutely don’t have it in the farm system.
11Bravo
Who do they have they can part with that can land DeGrom or Syndergaard? I would really like to know.
simschifan
He’s done. Sorry to say.
dimitrios in la
Quite likely, yes.
simschifan
Within a week they will announce a season ending surgery. And that is probably the best option.

Cubs now possess the two worst contracts in baseball, i.e. Heyward and Darvish. Yikes.
thegreatcerealfamine
Ellsbury
brewcrew08
At least the Yankees can get out from under Ellsbury in 2 1/2 years. Cubs have 5 1/2 left of Heyward and Yu lol
Yankeepride88
Heyward actually plays great defense and actually… Well, plays. Ellsbury is the 2nd worst contract in baseball behind Albert Pujols and his negative WAR
brewcrew08
I agree in terms of talent Ellsbury’s is the worst. I’m talking pure dollar figures since the cubs still owe Heyward 100M over 5 seasons and the Yankees owe Ellsbury just about 50M
jaysfan1994
Ellsbury’s contract has insurance meaning the Yankees are just paying something like a quarter of it.
Solaris601
As I was watching Darvish’s disastrous implosion in the World Series I thought to myself, “If I was a GM I wouldn’t even think about making him an offer this winter, but I’m sure there’ll be GMs who talk themselves into believing this is nothing to be concerned about.” The results so far speak for themselves. I hope he recovers on both a physical and performance level, but I’m not sure he’ll recover the fortitude to be an ace or even a 2 or 3.
simschifan
Miggy?
RedRooster
Miguel Cabrera, Chris Davis and Albert Pujols say hi.
jdgoat
Tulo. And Chris Davis is the worst contract in baseball.
realgone2
Chris Davis says hello
kbarr888
A. Pujols
M. Cabrera
Scherzer…….. (only because they have to pay him $107 Mil over his last 3 years playing for them……….and THEN……..$15 Mil/yr for 7 years AFTER he leaves the team……$105 Million deferred……)
Solaris601
Scherzer is the best, but those terms are absolutely insane.
internet1tough1guy
Offensively the first 2 years of heyward’s contract was awful, but this year you cant say he isnt living up to the contract all the way around.. hes hitting over .280, obp probably. 340. And is the best defensive right fielder in the game. Only thing he lacks is power and he was never a power guy, if he had power his contract would of been 300 mill.
8949
Maybe he can hit…
jaysfan1994
Can he hit when hes 40?

This is not related with this post but I go to this site daily and I have not seen a post about the kzone epidemic across baseball this season. ESPN has ruined live baseball on tv, first it was them so I just stopped watching mlb on ESPN but now literally every broadcast has the kzone garbage and it’s maddening. We should do a poll to see the results on how many people actually enjoy the kzone bs up at all times during broadcasts.
Steve Adams
I love seeing K-zone on the screen. I get frustrated when there isn’t some form of pitch-tracking.
Umpires review their calls against that same technology. If that’s what they’re using to help define the strike zone, I want to see it as well.
I suppose you can say you miss the days of debating whether something was a strike or ball and you prefer not to have the reference point, but I enjoy it.
Then again, I want access to as much data as possible, and I recognize that’s hardly a universal point of view.
Bryzzo2016
Personally, I love K Zone. Also, once MLB decided to adopt instant replay, there’s really no reason to half step, they might as well let K zone call balls and strikes. Even if they simply relay it to the home plate umpire so he can make the call and keep the appearance of the human element intact.

The Cubs were brilliant in their building of their current young core. Their recent major signings, however, may prevent them from really taking advantage of the talent they currently have on the roster. L

Brilliant huh? Yeah tanking 5 years in a row. Brilliant?

bandude
You must be referring to the Cards and/or Brewers…
Bryzzo2016
Yep, Theo did REALLY well with his 1st round picks. Teams rarely hit on one or two in a 5 year span, but to hit 5 in a row is crazy. BTW, can you imagine if the Astros took Bryant over Appel?!? WOW! Theo also did a great job with trades, acquiring Arrietta and Strop for nothing, Hendricks, Edwards for nothing, Russell, etc… Their international signings were huge too, they never get Chapman or Quintana without Torres and Jimenez. Zo was a good signing, Lester was a GREAT signing, Morrow has been very good as well as a few others. Edwin Jackson was a full on miss, I fear the same will be true for Chatwood. Yu signed for much less than projected, its way too early to tell how that will turn out, I still think he’ll be very good once this triceps thing is in the past. Heyward, actually took a lot less to sign with the Cubs, still a big contract, but he’ll end up making half of what Harper and/or Machado will get this winter. The bat has finally come around this year, the defense in RF has been stellar, perhaps the best defensive RFer in the game and he’s always been plus plus on the bases. Still young, that contract might not end up being as bad as some might think.
Theo is proven. He did it in Boston, in fact, most of those current studs on Boston are there thanks to Theo. You just can’t dispute his body of work. The fact is, the Cubs are printing money, so these bad contracts haven’t hurt them. Also, since this young core is locked up for years to come on team friendly contracts, the Cubs haven’t hit the luxury tax, unlike the Yanks, Dodgers and Red Sox. So, as they’ve already said they will, they can go crazy this winter in free agency if they so choose.
mack22 2
Thank God the Dodgers didn’t resign him
Solaris601
During the Dodgers telecast last night Hershiser and the other guy (name escapes me) were talking about how fearful Darvish was of the backlash he’ll get the next time he pitches at Chavez Ravine. It’s no exaggeration that last year’s WS meltdown is still in his head big time.
citizen
Now the diagnosis is elbow impigmentation, could be bone spurs next. Sounds like darvish or the trainers are having him over do it. Best case scenario, out one more month.
internet1tough1guy
Cubs need a couple pieces horribly. I think they need a solid reliever and most importantly a bat to plug into middle of the order that can hit with RISP. I think the best bet would be to trade with Baltimore and get Machado and britton.. I’d hate to give up russell, that defense is not replaceable, league leader in runs saved.. but if you can get both of them for russell and a couple too 10 prospects, I think you gotta do it. I think after the break, the starters will turn it around like last year. Hendricks is a 2nd half pitcher! Lester, hendricks, monty, quintana will all be fine. We got a couple easy months schedule wise coming up.
Bryzzo2016
So…. well, NO. Bullpen has been at or near the top of the league all season. Their offense leads the league.
They score more runs per game than anyone in the NL, they also lead the NL in run diff which is the best way to evaluate the strength of an overall team. Over 162, the teams with the best records tend to have the highest run diff, it’s not a coincidence.
Meanwhile, the closer has been on the shelf, their top set up man and future closer is still on the shelf, one of their starters remains on the shelf, their young stud MVP, arguably their best player has been on the shelf.
So the Cubs don’t “horribly” need anything other than to get healthy. Darvish will come back and pitch to his career norms. Hendricks and Quintana will eventually end up around their career norms. Chatwood will be bad consistently throughout the year mainly because he’s just not good at baseball (Thank god you never use your 5th starter in the postseason)
Maybe, if they can find a way to replace Chatwood w/Monty in the rotation, a LH pen arm would be nice, but Rosario has done really well since being called up so they really don’t even need that.
All of these guys are set to return after the AS break, so getting healthy might be the only thing the Cubs “need”.
