The Cubs have placed righty Shae Simmons on waivers, according to an announcement from Triple-A Iowa. If and when he clears, the organization will have an an open 40-man spot to work with.
Though the club did not specify the nature of the waivers sought, Simmons’s MLB.com player page indicates that he has already been outrighted after clearing waivers. If that’s the case, then it seems that other organizations have already passed on a chance to add a player who signed a split contract over the winter and has yet to ascend to the big leagues this year.
It’s not surprising to see the Cubs make this move with Simmons, who has yet to establish himself in the majors despite showing intriguing swing-and-miss ability at times in the minors. He has not been at his best this year, working to a 5.56 ERA in 22 2/3 innings at Triple-A while logging as many walks as strikeouts (21 apiece).

“ . . . Simmons’s MLB.com player page indicates that he has already been outrighted after clearing waivers. If that’s the case, then it seems that other organizations have already passed . . . “
Now I’m confused. I thought “waivers” was a period of time during which a player may be claimed by another team. You make it sound like the waiver period can be accelerated by other teams “passing”. Unless I have misunderstood something the only way of knowing that a team has passed on claiming a player is when the waiver period expires without a claim being filed. Perhaps “means” instead of “seems”?

Confused to on why the delay

The uncertainty here is in the information available. One source – the Iowa Cubs – says only that he was placed on waivers (but doesn’t say which type, or give the resolution). Another – MLB.com, which isn’t always perfectly accurate – says he has been outrighted already, which would only be possible if he has already cleared outright waivers.
I presented the least restrictive and most official version first but noted he may already have cleared — not because the period of time is flexible, but because the period may already have been initiated and resolved in this case.
“Means” would be another way to go there, sure. Or, strike “it seems that.” I just took a more casual tone.

The Cubs are a bit into subterfuge.
To clear waivers, the player has to be put on waivers for successive days (with the time drop being around one pm, for argument’s sake.).
Simmons cleared on Monday. Which means he was placed by Saturday. His 48 hours were from Saturday to Monday. And Theo Epstein didn’t send out an announcement to everyone’s cell phone that Simmons was waived on Saturday.
We heard when he cleared. No biggie.

I’m guessing Eddie Butler is ready to come off the 60-day DL?

Not likely. He hasn’t started pitching in Arizona yet.

I thought he was destined to be a dominant set-up man or closer when he first came up with the Braves. I hope he can turn it around.

I’d bet his best days are ahead of him. The ability to miss bats is still there. Command/control can take over a year of injury free pitching to come back. I’d love to see him back in a braves uniform.

I just dont think he ever recovered from his injuries. Hes not the same pitcher he was before and may never be again which ks unfortunate. Just the way she goes for some guys
