10:04am: To create 40-man space, the Braves moved young righty Mike Soroka to the 60-day disabled list. That means he’ll be on the shelf for quite some time, as he only went on the DL last Friday.
Clearly, the Atlanta organization anticipated that it would need to give Soroka’s ailing shoulder a lengthy rest. He already sat for a month before inflammation again cropped up, and this time he’ll miss at least twice that time.
The prized hurler will first be eligible to return to action on August 21st. It is not yet known whether the team anticipates that Soroka will be physically ready to return at that time.
9:46am: The Braves will select the contract of righty Wes Parsons today, MLB.com’s Mark Bowman was among those to report (Twitter links). It is not yet known how the organization will clear a 40-man spot. To create space on the active roster, though, the Braves will option righty Matt Wisler.
Parsons, now 25, originally joined the organization as an undrafted free agent. He has climbed the ladder steadily ever since, but really emerged last year at the Double-A level. In 103 total innings there, over ten starts and 16 relief appearances, Parsons worked to a 2.71 ERA with 8.6 K/9 and 2.9 BB/9 as well as a 54.2% groundball rate.
The success has continued into the 2018 campaign, with Parsons functioning almost exclusively as a starter. He has thrown 64 1/3 frames, split about evenly between Double-A and Triple-A, with a cumulative 2.10 ERA and peripherals that line up with his 2017 showing.
It seems likely that Parsons will contribute to the relief corps out of the gates. He may not be up for long, depending upon how the roster needs shake out. Now that he’s on the 40-man, though, Parsons could certainly be called upon at any moment — even in the rotation, perhaps, if that proves necessary.

I’m having a brain fart. Does everybody on the 40-man get paid at least the MLB minimum, or do you have to be on the 25 to get the minimum?
Zach725
You have to be on the 25 man. Although you usually get a salary increase when put on the 40 man.
jorge78
You get a really huge raise on the 40 man roster compared to usual minor league rates.
Can’t remember exactly how much but it’s sweet.
therealryan
Don’t remember the exact amount but I think it’s something like $40-45k first time on 40 and then I think it doubles the second year on the 40.
RunDMC
Ok, now I’m legitimately worried about Soroka.
Zach725
Nothing structural is wrong. So I’m hopeful that rest can heal it. But at the same time, whenever a young arm gets put on the DL, I’m legitimately concerned about long term affects.

Yeah, shoulder issues no bueno
bravesfan
Good for him. Hard work stories are always great
gorav114
Nice job by the Braves developing this guy. He was an undrafted pitcher out of a community college. They put him on the perfect path at the perfect pace now he’s earned himself a shot in the bigs at 25 years old. That’s how you run a successful organization.
formerlyz
The Marlins have Trevor Richards. And they’re not even a real sports organization. The Braves are a good organization b/c of all the other stuff they do right. This is just another example of that.
inkstainedscribe
The Braves may have cut Steve Avery’s career short by overworking him when he was about Soroka’s age. Here’s for caution.
bravesfan88
Correct, way better to be safe than risk injuring this young stud. Soroka no doubt would pitch through pain, so it’s good that they’re letting him rest until late August, at the least
Soroka is mature well beyond his years, on and off the mound, so he will unquestionably be a force in the Braves rotation for years to come. I’d be very concerned if they didn’t give him ample, if not extra, rest after having to go back on the DL yet again.

I’m just baffled at what they find so fascinating with Danny Santana?
atlho
there are so many other players that haven’t contributed at all lately and have been terrible and you’re baffled about danny santana?
Ragnarok
Danny Santana hasn’t done a thing since his rookie season to be fair.
bravesfan88
Santana, as of NOW, presents the Braves with their best option. Dustin Peterson has been struggling at AAA, and no one else currently in the organization can offer the Braves anything better than Santana.
He has a little pop, some speed, and he can play all positions in the OF fairly well..I mean the Braves are struggling with quality depth in the OF, but Bourjos should be the first to go not Santana..
Besides, when they brought him up, he was currently on a tear in AAA, so they were just playing the hot hand..
The ONLY other option, that’s currently in their system, would be Michael Reed. He’s been on a hot streak ever since joining the Braves, but he is probably next in line after Tucker, Santana, and Bourjos..
I would recall Tucker, designate Bourjos, and then target a better 4th OF option at the deadline..Until then the Braves are stuck with what they have, and that isn’t much..
Although, to the credit of the Braves reserves, the combination of Flaherty (especially early on), Tucker (especially early on), Suzuki/Flowers, Culberson (especially lately), Camargo (especially lately), and to a lesser extent Bourjos and Santana, they have ALL helped contribute to several wins for this team.
Somehow, someway, what was supposed to be a MAJOR weakness for this team, their bench, has actually produced at a pretty good level..And the Braves have done this by going with and rotating the hot guys..
Think about this, it wasn’t all THAT long ago Braves fans were complaining about how Culberson was useless..Well, how useless has he been lately?? He has single handedly just about won 3-4 games in the past few weeks..
Calm down, it could be MUCH WORSE!! Atleast there is no Bonifacio or Greg Norton..lol

…just in time for the trade season to pick up.

Damn I really want to see Sorokin succeed. Guys going to be a stud.
chound
Radio was talking about the move. He was going to be put on ice for 30 days anyway, and the logic was “as many days down, take as many days to warm back up”. So 60 day DL was the logical step.

Speaking of the braves any new news on the body found in the freezer at sun trust park yesterday evening? I’m guessing this is gonna be a real story if MLB is mum on the subject.
southi
The body found in a freezer was a third party vendor. The whole situation is under investigation. From my limited knowledge there isn’t much to report until that investigation is complete.

….Jimmy Hoffa…….

Michael Reed should get a shot over Danny Santana. He’s tearing the cover off the ball. Braves keep these 4A guys in the lineup when they dont do much. honestly, I’d send Santana down and option Acuna down there until he gets really hot there and bring up Reed, whom hits for average, walks and power, but is also a minor league journeyman
RunDMC
Agreed 1000x. Santana has also been hitting well at AAA, but not like Reed who looks insane. They need to play the hot hand with 4th OF. And also give a shot to Evan Phillips.
bravesfan88
#1. Acuña Jr. isn’t currently on the 25-man yet.
#2. You would really want to keep Bourjos on the roster over Santana??
#3. You would want to call up Michael Reed over the #2 prospect in baseball?? I understand he’s on a hot streak, but unless he’s magically figured something out, NOTHING in his past suggests this streak is sustainable..
Not to mention, we’ve already seen that Acuña Jr. isn’t very motivated at the AAA level, but I think that’s why they’ve given him some extra time down there..Just to let him get out ALL the kinks, and at least get his timing back..But he’s definitely BY FAR the Braves best option as their 3rd OF’er..Even if he is a little rusty..still if he’s fully healthy, he can knock off some rust in the bigs..His presence alone, his speed, and his defense helps the Braves tremendously!!
I would probably call up Reed over Bourjos, just to take a gamble on Reed and see what he’s got, but that’s about it..
Also, DMC, isn’t Phillips on the 25 man already??
southi
Evan Phillips was called up briefly, but if I recall correctly Phillips was sent back down without seeing game action. Since Phillips is now on the 40 man it is only a matter of time before he gets called back up.
Sam Freeman needs to be gone, but unless they replace him with Max Fried I don’t see a lefty in the organization that I feel they would promote (I think they really want to stretch out Gohara).
bravesfan88
Good for Parsons, he has grinder his way up and down the minor league ladder for a couple years now, and at every stop he ALWAYS gives his team a chance to win..He’s a professional pitcher, and has earned a shot. I hope he gets a legitimate look, other than just mop up duty..
TradeAcuna
The free falling continues, slowly, but surely. You know this team is giving up on the season when they call up a nobody when supposedly they keep hyping their other pitchers. Couple that with the likelihood they will just sit and watch the other teams in the division improve for this year and next. The Braves will just sit and drool about prospects.
Backatitagain
Why didn’t Parsons come in today instead of Freepass?
