The Blue Jays have placed veteran third baseman Josh Donaldson on the 10-day DL, per a club announcement. Taking the open roster spot will be lefty Tim Mayza, the club also announced.
Calf tightness is the official cause for the placement, which is backdated to May 29th. Donaldson previously missed time this year owing to a shoulder ailment.
It’s obviously disappointing for the Jays to see Donaldson again hit the DL. There had been at least some hope that he’d manage to avoid it, but evidently the injury was not coming along as hoped. His outlook remains largely unknown, though it seems generally promising that the club felt it worthwhile to wait a few days before deciding upon the move.
Donaldson’s every move is under a microscope given the circumstances. He’s a pending free agent playing for a team that is now six games under .500 and already staring at a 13.5 game deficit in the AL East. That makes Donaldson a potentially significant trade chip. And that’s all before considering his status for the upcoming free agent market.
The 32-year-old Donaldson has long been seen as a big part of a much-hyped 2018-19 free agent class. But he has not been quite himself on the field, with a .234/.333/.423 slash through 159 plate appearances, and the injuries are of increasing concern. There’s certainly plenty of time for Donaldson to get back to health and show he’s still capable of playing to his exceedingly lofty standard, though.
Many of the Toronto faithful will perhaps see this as an opening that ought to be filled by top prospect Vladimir Guerrero Jr. The 19-year-old third baseman has laid waste to Double-A pitching all year long, but there’s no indication as of yet that the front office is considering him for a potential MLB promotion.

Josh Donaldson? More like Donald Johnson! hahahaha

Signed in for first time in over a year to like this. GGOOTTT EEEEEEMMMMMMM
bravesandcrewfan
I personally don’t think Vlad. He should be in AAA polishing his defense since he doesn’t have a ton of experience at the position and his defense is a little subpar. If he stays down he could become one of the best 3B in the game, instead of a very good career DH. Although he’s still in AA which confounds me.
Solaris601
Donaldson’s walk year has gotten off to a horrible start. If things don’t improve he’ll probably be looking at a below market 1-year contract next winter.
justin-turner overdrive
and he’ll be 34 after that 1 year deal, yikes.
Wait, he’s already made $57M, oops I dont care if he doesn’t get some 100 mill deal, my bad lol
Solaris601
Right? Donaldson can expect a text from Mike Moustakas that will simply read, “Welcome to my world.”

Why would the Jays start Vlads clock so soon?
He’s still very young…..
justin-turner overdrive
Because he’s a MLB player playing in the minors and age is a ridiculously stupid thing to block a MLB players route to the bigs?
Were you saying this dumbass narrative about Ken Griffey Jr in 89? Exactly, Stop it. Vlad is ready and we deserve to see him thrive in the bigs, who gives a crap about his defense, the Jays aren’t going to the postseason this year anyway. Bring up Bichette too while you’re at it.
Jackus
Vlad is an MLB caliber bat but potentially a liability at 3b still. Griffey was a gold glove centre fielder, not a great comparison. You have to play both sides of the ball. You don’t want vlad coming up to the bigs and kicking the ball around the infield and embarrassing himself and losing games (not that it matters at the minute). Plus you start his clock in a season that doesn’t matter. Bad business decision and maybe a bad baseball decision as well. Send him to AAA

martin everyday 3b? lol

Many do not understand the way Atkins looks at AA and AAA. Atkins considers AAA players as major league ready and just waiting for an opportunity, like an injury, to come up and contribute. He considers AA and below his prospect pool who still need development in order to get to AAA and then the minors. By the way, he said all of this in interviews so this is on the record. Vlad will get promoted to AAA around the Allstar break, in my opinion, and tear up AAA until the end of Buffalo’s season. Do not expect him as a Sept call up either. They are going to wait as long as possible before putting him on the 40 man roster. Rightly so. They are not competitive this year and I expect they will trade many of their veterans by August and you will see a lot of AAA players up to try out for next year…Pompey, Alford, Urena, and especially Sean Reid Foley and Ryan Borucki.
rhymo
Agreed my man. Some one with good sense of the organization and what they would be doing.
jimmertee
I don’t think Atkins will be a GM that much longer. He has shown many many poor judgement call errors during his tenure.
its_happening
The interview was grounds for dismissal. Get him to AAA. Vlad has earned it. Beyond earned it. Atkins should thank Tony LaCava for signing Happ and others to boost the Jays into the 2016 postseason.
Forget Pompey, Alford isn’t hitting his weight, Urena still needs work with the stick. The only position player proving to be worthy of a callup in AAA is Danny Jansen.
jimmertee
I figured Jansen would have been called up a while ago but Maile started hot but is comng back down to his normal sub .200 self.
Pompey is no longer a prospect. He isn’t even depth. He can steal bases, that’s it.
I really like Alford as a prospect. If his health can get on track, he has Star potential, better than Lloyd Moseby. The Jays need to be very patient with this guy, he is likely a late bloomer.
I’m not sure Urena will ever be better than he is now.
Why is Grichuk still with this team?
its_happening
Jays are giving Jansen the Vlad treatment. They should be allowing him to work alongside Martin.
Pompey is a head case. And he is injured again.
I agree on Urena. His stick is not where it needs to be. It’s Anthony Gose part II with less hype.
I’m less sold on Alford. A prospect needs to be better in AAA at age 24.
Grichuk should still be in the minors getting man-handled. Organization can’t let him go and admit they made a mistake. Yes Connor Greene’s not performing in AA, but notice St. Louis trying to get pitchers throwing 100 mph? Greene could have been a bullpen candidate for the Jays in 2019.
justin-turner overdrive
Atkins is the worst GM in MLB then because he doesn’t understand outliers and think every prospect is bound by age and not talent.
jimmertee
Blue Jays great years 1992, 1993 and before? Why? Answer: Pat Gillick. HOF GM.
its_happening
Atkins also says he doesn’t believe it a full rebuild. This could get ugly over the next few months.

Who would trade for an injury-waiting-to-happen?

Someone will certainly trade for Donaldson providing the Jays seek a reasonable return

Donaldson is having a press conference after tonight’s game, wonder if this means the injury is really significant?
jimmertee
It is too bad that Josh Donaldson is hurt so much. He really is an elite, elite ballplayer when heathy. Atkins should be fired for not trading him last year at the trade deadline. Many called for it including me.
This is a sad BlueJays situation.
NoRegretzkys
I’m with ya. Last deadline was prime time to deal him. But the soon-to-be-fired Shapkins actually came out last year and said the reason they didn’t blow it up was because of the fans and wanting to keep them happy. Which is a totally ridiculous thing to do. Needed to do what’s best for the ballclub, which was trade assets and reload with younger talent for the next few years.
its_happening
Last year was the time. I was mocked for suggesting it in my inner circle. The franchise is a bigger mess than people want to believe. Given how certain teams have turned things around I see less incentive for teams to want to part with their upper tier prospects. Plus, many top teams have already unloaded a bulk of the cupboard. Jays lost out on a golden opportunity last year. Tough to see them gaining any return on investments.
jimmertee
Anyone notice that Cashman turned around the Yankees in only a few years to the juggernaut that they are now? He did it by trading amazin pieces for near ready stars like Torres etc.
Why can’t Atkins and Shapiro do that? They managed to pick up Solarte and Hernandez for almost nothing, imagine if they were actually trading away good pieces? [And not end up with Grichuk, Diaz, Ngeope, Maile, Urshela, Morales, Pearce, Clippard, Petricka, and and and]
justin-turner overdrive
The Yankees have 1 title in the 2000’s or last 18 years – why are you calling them a juggernaut? No one thinks this and if Judge didn’t go to college he’d be playing for Oakland right now and the Yankees wouldn’t even be a contender.
its_happening
Given what Jimmer said, JTO, he was referring to the last 3 years.
Yankees have 2 titles in the 2000’s (2000, 2009). They’ve made the world series and ALCS numerous times. How many have the Jays made since the strike? Yankees at this current time are perennial contenders.
The moves to build up the system have been pretty darn good. If the Jays can come close to doing what the Yankees have done since 2015 they will be in good shape.
sportsjunkie24
Vlads only 19 people
its_happening
That hasn’t stopped him from tearing up AA pitching.
justin-turner overdrive
Ken Griffey Jr was too, dummy -19 YEAR OLDS ARE ALLOWED IN MLB!!!
Imagine not knowing baseball history enough to have this opinion? Stop talking and learn more.
NoRegretzkys
So you can cite ONE player and say it should be the norm? The reason you can think of Griffey is because he was the exception, not the rule, and it was a different era back then. Now it’s about keeping team control for the longest amount of time.
brucewayne
Robin Yount was the Brewers starting SS at 18!
NoRegretzkys
Again, a different era of baseball. A closer comparison would be Bryce Harper who was 19 when he debuted in Washington. And he will be set to get one of the richest contracts in MLB history this offseason. Why? Because he’s still young, still a star, and his mlb time clock was started as a 19 year old. Why bring Vlad up to a losing club in a losing environment only to have him get used to losing? It serves NO purpose to bring him up at all this year.
its_happening
A-Rod came up at 18, got a few games at 19, stud by 20. The experience gained in 1995 at 19 had to have helped him break out in 1996.
baseballsavvy
Are you saying that if his mlb debut was one year later, it would have prevented him from signing what will be the largest contract in MLB? SMH at this logic….
NoRegretzkys
The biggest contract Griffey signed was around 13 million per year for 9 years. Remind me again how history plays a role in bringing up Vlad now as opposed to next May when they will gain that much more control over him?
Solaris601
I think Shapiro and Atkins will trade Donaldson to the highest bidder this summer (return won’t be remarkable) and just be grateful TOR had Donaldson’s best years, and move on. They should have dealt him last winter at the latest, but they had to keep up appearances that they were contending in 2018.
NoRegretzkys
That’s part of the problem, keeping up appearances isn’t what matters. Building a club for long term success regardless of appearances is what matters. Anyone who knows anything knew this team wouldn’t be competitive even with full health.
its_happening
100% correct Solaris. The plans to rebuild should have been set in-motion a year ago. The owners were not prepared for smaller crowd sizes and revenue losses also, which is another factor in the team’s decision making.
