The White Sox have claimed catcher Dustin Garneau off waivers from the Athletics, per a club announcement. Righty Miguel Gonzalez was bumped to the 60-day DL to create a 40-man spot.
Garneau had just been designated for assignment. Now, he’ll head to Chicago to help bolster a catching unit that just lost starter Welington Castillo for much of the rest of the season.
The 30-year-old Garneau hasn’t played in the majors this year, but has appeared in 87 games over the past three seasons. He hasn’t hit much in his limited opportunities at the game’s highest level, and is carrying a paltry .208/.263/.333 batting line in 80 plate appearances this season at Triple-A, but at times he has posted quality offensive numbers in the upper minors.
You guys called it!
I was thinking the same thing
What a time to be alive for us Sox fans
Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!!!!
It may be too early to decide if some of the young players are failures, but Fulmer, Giolito, and Anderson aren’t showing enough for the fans to have hope. Their player development has been brutal for 5-10 years.
It’s like his parents said “hmm, what name sounds way too much like Justin Morneau?”
“Got it!”
Just don’t get it. Why sign someone who has only played 87 games in 3 years. Cooper needs to go. Pitchers are awful.
Why? Simple , to get first pick in draft next year
What’s not to get? Garneau cost nothing and is slated for backup duty at best behind Omar Navarez, maybe only as long as it takes for Kevan Smith to be activated from the DL and promoted to Chicago.
Because better guys aren’t available to pick up off the scrap heap at league minimum.
He’s a waiver claim, what do you expect?
Garneau is a very good defensive catcher. Melvin complemented him last Sept. on how well he handled the pitching staff. Unfortunately he cant hit worth a darned.
