The Royals have outrighted right-hander Brandon Maurer, per a club announcement. He’ll join the organization’s Triple-A affiliate.
Maurer, 27, looked to be an interesting buy-low piece when he was acquired last year in a multi-player swap. But things have not gone well for him since he landed in Kansas City.
Through 24 1/3 innings with the Royals, most of them coming down the stretch in 2017, Maurer owns an 8.88 ERA with 24 strikeouts and 14 free passes. He has continued to be bombed in his six Triple-A frames since being optioned earlier this season, recording an 8:1 K/BB ratio but coughing up 11 earned runs on 11 hits.

Wasn’t this guy the closer for the 2017 Padres?

Racked up 22 saves just this last year. It’s amazing how volatile relievers can be.

That trade was so weird. The Royals gave up a really interesting prospect for about 1 and half good pitchers and it was fairly obvious they weren’t going to be in the playoffs. I know they were close but there was a lot of better teams

Royals held a Wild Card spot at the trade deadline. Although you could argue that even if they kept it, they wouldn’t have made it very far in the postseason.

Dayton Moore has proven quite adept at not giving up prospects that we end up regretting. Not saying none of them have done well, but most of them haven’t done a lot.
Also, that trade was more about dumping Travis Wood’s salary than it was about bringing prospects, but we also flipped Buchter for two SP that are now in our Top 30 prospects, so it wasn’t all for naught.

What do you mean dumping Travis woods salary? The royals are paying the entire thing minus league min
That 2nd baseman they gave up is a stud. Royals got taken

I wonder if you’re one of those that think the padres are paying Kemp’s salary? Which they’re not. Doyuers are paying the entire thing. Meanwhile the padres are stuck with olverias contract

You mean like Sean Manaea?
Balky
He did say “not saying none of them have done well.” Sean Manaea would be one that has done well. You have to give something to get something and the Royals gave up Manaea for Zobrist.. and got a world championship. Worth it.

He also said the Maurer trade was more about dumping Travis Wood’s salary even though the Royals agreed to pay his entire salary as part of the trade.
