Mariners star Robinson Cano has received an eighty-game suspension for testing positive for substances banned by the MLB-MLBPA Joint Drug Agreement, as first reported by Hector Gomez of Deportivo Z 101 (via Twitter) and Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic (Twitter link). Since the ban begins immediately, Cano will be eligible to return in the middle of August.
Cano was suspended for a diuretic known as furosemide that is prohibited by the JDA among other diuretics and masking agents, as Jon Heyman of Fan Rag tweeted and the league has since announced. Cano has issued a statement through the MLBPA (Twitter link) in which he says the “substance was given to [him] by a licensed doctor in the Dominican Republic to treat a medical ailment.” And a source claims to MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand (via Twitter) that Cano was receiving treatment for high blood pressure, with PED tests before and after the test in question coming back clean.
That claim seems to offer a potential explanation at first glance, but the full context must also be considered here. Players are advised clearly not to take substances that have not been cleared in advance, a lesson drilled in through prior suspensions in the faces of claims of innocence.
More importantly, as ESPN.com’s T.J. Quinn rightly points out on Twitter, the JDA does not treat diuretics and masking agents in the same manner it does banned performance enhancing drugs themselves. Unlike in the case of tests that reveal PEDs, intent is required to support the application of the standard 80-game ban for first-time offenders in the cases of diuretics or masking agents. Here’s the language from the JDA, Section 3(F):
“The presence of a Diuretic or Masking Agent in a Player’s urine specimen shall result in the Player being re-tested. The presence of a Diuretic or Masking Agent in a Player’s urine specimen shall be treated as a positive test result if the [Independent Program Administrator] determines that the Player intended to avoid detection of his use of another Prohibited Substance.”
Cano, 35, had been discussing the matter with the league since the test results came in over the winter, per Heyman (via Twitter). It seems fair to presume that the league felt there was sufficient evidence to support a finding that Cano had avoided detection of a PED. Cano had just hit the DL with a fractured right hand that was likely to keep him out for some time. By dropping his right to an appeal now, he can rehab that injury while serving out the suspension, though ESPN.com’s Jerry Crasnick tweets that the process was already underway.
The implications, to be sure, are many. Cano will not be eligible to draw his usual salary, meaning he’ll forfeit about $10MM and save the team the same amount. And he’ll surely lose some sponsorship opportunities, costing him further money. The veteran second baseman also will not be eligible to participate in the postseason if the Mariners make it in.
More broadly, a respected player on a potential Hall-of-Fame trajectory has now tainted his legacy. The former Yankees star has produced both before and after bolting to the Mariners via free agency before the 2014 season. He’s a lifetime .304/.354/.493 hitter with 305 home runs in over 2,000 games of MLB action. With defense and baserunning factored, in Cano has been valued at 67.5 rWAR and 54.5 fWAR over his career.
Cano remains under contract for five more seasons beyond the present one. He’s slated to earn $24MM per season from 2019 through 2023. While that means the M’s won’t be looking for a long-term replacement, they will need to replace him in the near-term. For the immediate time being, Gordon Beckham is up to take a roster spot. But perhaps it’s still conceivable the M’s could move Dee Gordon back to the infield while filling in for him in center with any number of other players.

greatdaysport
True. True!
jrbw
100% ABSOLUTELY CORRECT
They SIGN their names to contracts STATING that they will NOT cheat and use a long list of chemicals – prescribed or not. THEN just willingly and pre-meditatively USE THEM ANYWAY.
Their signatures and words mean NOTHING. No ethics, NO MORALS.
muskie73
In a free market a player should be able to choose a contract with the most favorable terms.
A player may choose a team with a less restrictive clause over a team with a more restrictive clause.
And a team could limit its offers to players who are willing to accept the restrictive clause, passing on the free agents who are unwilling to accept the restrictive clause..
It should be a competitive market place.
Double A
Cruz and Dee seem to have rebounded fine…
Stevil
Talk to the MLBPA about that. I can’t think of a better way to deter players from using banned substances.
Potpot106
Immediate life time ban with no pay would do the trick
davidcoonce74
Ugh, that opens up a huge can of worms, right? Because teams can just start adding stuff to the “PED” list in order to void contracts.
brucewayne
Would this be cause for the Mariners to drop Cano
brucewayne
and his contract ? Don’t they write a morals clause into contracts now to protect the team from stuff like this?
Cat Mando
“and his contract ? Don’t they write a morals clause into contracts now to protect the team from stuff like this?”
Nope…cannot void a contract plus on top of that it would be discipline which is prohibited in the CBA (i.e. MLB and a team cannot discipline for the same instance and PED use falls under the realm of MLB even though each team pays for the tests for their players)
deweybelongsinthehall
Add in the Feds suing the player and if they knew, the agent, the team and even MLB. Then force a reduction in cable rates, season ticket costs, etc. Radical but the broken system will remain broken with us schmucks, the fans continuing to be laughed at all the way to the bank.
stansfield123
A contract is a written agreement between two or more parties. It is enforced based on what IS in it.
Since the contract between the Mariners and Cano (which both parties agreed to) says that Cano is entitled to 10 years worth of salary at a rate of $24M/year, minus the 80 days’ worth that he will spend under suspension, that’s what the Mariners owe him.
To suggest otherwise is to suggest that we get rid of the concept of a contract altogether.
stansfield123
Seriously? You want to socialize baseball?
stansfield123
Yes, and executing shoplifters would do the trick in preventing shoplifting, too.
But, if you look into your soul a little, instead of spending all your time judging others, you might find that proportionate punishment for our mistakes is not such a bad idea.
stansfield123
The Mariners can drop any player in their employment, at any time. They of course have to keep paying what’s in their contract, but they can drop them.
brucewayne
Ok! I thought they changed a bunch of that with the last CBA contract ! But all they did was increase the punishment right?
mrbrklyn
No, this is not a market issue. This is an ethics issue. Steroids is biological engineering and it is imorral to do that for entertainment.
jrbw
Even more unethical for individual competitive pursuits where those who best others are rewarded financially as well as in record books and with future hugely rewarding contracts.

Exactly. Why anyone is surprised by this is beyond me. PEDs are alive and well from the MLB all the way down to the top amateurs…..and there are millions of reasons why. Cano, and the others both caught and not caught, benefit substantially by using….even when caught. End of story.

In anything, the incorrect part of this is “goes” instead of “go” because “They” in this case is not assuming the gender of chances at an arbitrary Hall of “fame”, the “fame” in this case being in itself a arbitrary use of the word! 🙂

Pretty sure he has to be healthy then serve the suspension. So his season is basically over. Can’t play in postseason if Mariners make it
BravesCanada
I don’t think that’s true but he definitely loses his salary for the suspension vs getting paid on the dl

He can NOT play in post-season.
LIkely would never have been caught if not for the injury.
There are still many players who use HGH & PEDs during the off-season.
justin-turner overdrive
Him not being able to play in the postseason is the biggest part of this story.
indiansfan44
I hate the cannot play in the post season rule. Not because I don’t think he should be able to play but because MLB has double standards. I understand that a drug related suspension is different than a suspension for something done on the field but MLB publically said last year that they did not want a suspension to impact the world series. That happened during the world series and was put off until this season. Cano is suspended 4 months before the post season and he won’t be allowed to play AFTER serving his time. Just doesn’t seem right.
jrbw
In 2013, 13 players were suspended in August for HGH and returned a week before playoffs and played. Good policy?
Ironman_4life
I’m gonna do some homework but you’re telling me all 13 of those players were in the playoffs?
jrbw
No, I didn’t say all of their teams made the playoffs. Those whose teams did, played.
Ironman_4life
After doing a little bit of research I found eight major-league players and for minor leaguers or suspended August 5 of 2013. Alex Rodriguez Francisco cervelli Evereth Cabrera and yadmani grandal were among the few. However none of those players were in the playoffs. If I have made a mistake please clarify for me.
ShieldF123
He was caught over the winter, and just now dropped his appeal. Injury had nothing to do with him getting caught
HubcapDiamondStarHalo
According to the story, “Cano, 35, had been discussing the matter with the league since the test results came in over the winter…”
So yeah, they would have known regardless.
Double A

mikeyank55
Hey citizen-what rule boom are you looking at?
He violated the rules. 80 games. Period.
His opportunity to go into the HOF as the best offensive 2B in baseball history just were flushed down the toilet.
Where’s JZ now? Hiding with his other buddies, not leading his client.
The rest of the Cano contract is going to choke the Mariners.
Without PED’d what’s the chances of him playing well as he ages?
What are the chances that his body doesn’t fall apart as a result of PED abuse?
Chris
Jay-Z*. While this no doubt taints his legacy and HoF cridentials Robbie Cano has been one of the beat 2B in MLB since he stepped onto the field in 2005. But he’s 35 years old and with this season being a wrap, you can’t expect much from a 36 y/o in any capacity. And the contract was always gonna be an albatross, it’s just a shame they weren’t able to capitalize before it began to crush them
mikeyank55
Jay Z has no issues. He collected his commission fees years ago. Another example of an agent taking the money and running instead of providing guidance and important advice.
So there was no safe wisdom shared when Robbie wanted to take medicine from doctor in the DR?
“No worries. Whatever. Who cares about the HOF?”
Josh S
Considering the ban is being served for something prescribed by his doc in the DR for a medical ailment, and the substance isn’t even a PED in the first place but rather a “masker”, I’d say he’ll be just fine considering he hasn’t ever used actual PEDs (giving him the benefit of the doubt, of course).
jrbw
So did his DR ‘doctor’ give it to him for congestive heart disease, liver disease, kidney disease, vascular disease, and/or edema. Those are what it is prescribed for and made for.
World Doping Association has seen it used so much and for so long, that it is banned world wide for even preliminary Olympic trials that take place years before the Games.
Cat Mando
@Josh S……Manny said the same thing…my Dr. gave it to me. Ironically his Dr. was the father of Tony Bosch of Biogenesis fame.
Every player knows, especially one in the league for years, that they can possibly get a TUE (Therapeutic Use Exemption) for a legit need but it has to be done properly.
Every player is issued a hard copy of all banned substances. They even have their own website the can access with their Dr. to see if it’s banned as well as a 24/7 toll free 3 they can call. All of that is available in Spanish as well as English
Steven Chinwood
It was reviewed by the IPA according to John Heyman and that doctor determined it was possibly for masking.
ShieldF123
A diuretic agent can mask, as in eliminate the chance of being discovered, the usage of certain actual PEDs. While it’s not a common thing players are popped for in major sports it’s become on of the most common things players are caught using in MMA by USADA.
Cat Mando
“It was reviewed by the IPA according to John Heyman and that doctor determined it was possibly for masking.”
That means they reviewed his medical records and the Drs. findings and found the prescription was not for an ailment.
mikeyank55
Hey josh. Why give him the benefit of the doubt. The rules are crystal clear…from Seattle to the DR there shouldn’t be any questions, period.
Real baseball fans should not tolerate this ignorance. Robby has all the money in the world. He should have taken his butt on a plane to a NYC doctor/hospital w the guidance of his agent (sorry the music is too loud) Jay Z, or super of that the MLBPA or MLB to insure that he stayed within the boundaries.
Tough luck Robbie, period.

Vedder80
By the time he is eligible for a vote, the voters won’t care anymore.
suddendepth
Agree. All this does is make things posthumous.
majorflaw
“All this does is make things posthumous.”
Disagree. Some day reasonably soon a great player who was also an obvious PED violator will be voted into the HoF. If Bonds and Clemens aren’t voted in by the BBWAA they will be by the Veterans Committee and it won’t take long.
Once the barrier has been crossed it will no longer be tenable to disqualify players based on PED usage alone. It’ll be factor which voters can consider and adjust for, but not a complete bar. Sorry, but that is the future. Mr. Cano will likely be alive, well and reasonably young when he is inducted into the HoF.
lord vincent
If that happens then Raffy should get in via the Veteran Committee. 3000 hits should get him in.
majorflaw
“If that happens then Raffy should get in vis the Veterans Committee.”
I would think so, yes. The first admittees will have to be all time great players like Bonds and Clemens. But then other great but not quite as great as the first group like Manny Ramirez, Sosa, McGwire, and —yes—Palmeiro will get in.
agentx
I disagree, as two of Palmeiro’s biggest qualifications are counting stats (500+ HR and 3,000+ hits) that he probably would have had a much harder time achieving without PEDs.
agentx
Palmeiro was definitely very good but in my opinion was seldom even the best player or two on his own team.
majorflaw
“two of Palmeiro’s biggest accomplishments . . . he probably would have had a much harder time achieving without PEDs.”
That’s a reasonable argument and something HoF voters may well take into consideration. Look at it this way, if a voter believes that a player’s stats were inflated by 10% due to PED use then he can discount the player’s career by 10%—or whatever % that voter chooses.
Players like Bonds, Clemens and Arod will likely clear the bar even after voters apply whatever discount they believe appropriate. Players like Palmeiro aren’t so clear. The dynamic will be different when there are already blatant PED users in the HoF; there are already PED users in the HoF but Bonds and/or Clemens will make the implicit explicit.
mikeyank55
Too bad there’s a major flaw in that reasoning. The line will be crossed by players from back in the day.
However dopes from these days who dope should NOT be granted exceptions. I mean how long and for how many years should they now know it is not good?
davidcoonce74
Hank Aaron and Willie Mays are both in the HoF and they used PEDs. It’s not as much of an issue as you think.
majorflaw
“Hank Aaron and Willie Mays . . . used PEDs.”
Correct, Mr. coonce. As did Mickey Mantle.
“It’s not as much of an issue as you think.”
Several years ago Bill James predicted:
1. We would soon develop drugs which provide the benefits of PEDs but without any harmful side effects.
2. Athletes will then not only be permitted to take PEDs, it will be expected of them.
3. The folks like Bonds, Clemens, Sosa, McGwire and others who are currently branded “cheats” will be remembered by history as “pioneers” instead.
The original argument against PED use isn’t the effect on the game but the damage they can cause users. Once that threat is no longer present it would appear that the reason for banning PEDs would similarly disappear.
deweybelongsinthehall
Wby have a HOF of cheating is ignored? Too much talent not in and will never get in if their stats are weighed against PED users. Hall of Shame is where they belong. Should be sued for fraud because that’s what it is. Cost of games, cable, merchandise is all inflated in part because of it. The system is still designed to reward cheaters.
deweybelongsinthehall
What?
brucewayne
I take testosterone shots every 2 weeks
brucewayne
from my Dr. and they’ve helped me tremendously ! No problems!
mrbrklyn
<>
No they won’t. Taking PEDs is bioengineering and very dangerous ground and it will not be tolerated because some fans and writers are short sighted and selfish.
jrbw
Then the HOF will have become a totally different entity from what it was created for. It will be another museum like any other, nothing special.
SanDiegoTom
Would he have to serve the suspension after he ruturns from the DL?
MB923
I think so.
MB923
Well, we were wrong. Suspension takes place now.
wattyman69
Yes
realgone2
Yes
jrbw
NO. Suspension can be served on DL. Idiotic, right?
mikeyst13
Not sure why the rules are different fot PED suspensions, other suspensions can no longer be served while on the DL. Gurriel had to serve his 5 games for behavior after coming off the DL, Steven Wright had to serve his 15 games for domestic violence after coming off the DL. As has been pointed out, it wouldn’t make a huge difference in this case since he was only on the 10 day so far, but if you’re really going to punish a guy you shouldn’t count his DL time as time served as he’d miss those games anyway.
jbigz12
He doesn’t get paid for those games though. It’s unfortunate he’s already out but he won’t collect any money while he’s rehabbing now.
dan-9
Not really. The real punishment is that he won’t get paid, not that he doesn’t get to play. If he were just on the DL with no suspension the team would still have to pay him.
mikeyank55
The real punishment will be the team ranking while he’s out. It’s one thing to replace a player on the DL. It’s another to replace a cheater.
Chemistry out the door. Season over.

If he stayed in New York he would’ve been huge. After Jeter’s decline there was no one to be the face of the franchise until Judge showed up. 2013-2015 though were pretty meh for the Yankees when Cano was gone. He could’ve had it all in the big Apple but chose to chase the dollars in Seattle
PopeMarley
Makes him a gold digger I suppose.
JamieMoyer 4

No. Actually New Yorkers are ok with guys chasing the money.
We’re not ok with players chasing the money and then telling the press that they left because they got no respect from management.
Full of – – – -.
chri
well at least the Mariners get salary relief from that contract
agentx
If the players and management really wanted PEDs out of the game, both the player and the team would be penalized. Suspend violators like they do now, void their contract, force their team to pay what the violator would have received to charity, and make the violator subject to a qualifying offer if he is not already the season after his suspension.

Solaris601
If Kipnis was playing above replacement level, CLE could pay down his contract so SEA would essentially be responsible for about $10M this year which is what they would’ve paid Cano. But Kipnis is playing below replacement level, so forget I even mentioned it.

Once he left the Yankees his hall of fame chances went down hill anyways. Went to a non playoff team. Spend the rest of his big contract finishing 3/4th in the division doesn’t not make a hall of famer. Maybe hall of really good.
stormie
Even if your comment wasn’t nonsense (it is, big time), it wouldn’t apply to Cano anyways, since he had more playoff appearances in NY alone than most players have during their entire careers.
mikeyank55
Hey Stormie-being in denial is nonesense. Call it like it is. Robbie is a cheater. Period. No rationalizations.
mike127
For those commenting whether he needs to be healthy for the suspension to start, it really doesn’t matter. He’s on the 10 day DL. The Mariners can take him off the DL next week IF the suspension clock can’t be started on a DLd player. The injury really plays a small factor in this—if any at all.
jrbw
Suspension can be served on DL. Stupid rule!
mike127
That was kind of my point. I didn’t know if suspension could or couldn’t be served on the DL—but since he is on the 10 day, all they had to do was take him off on the 10th day.
jrbw
Something owners and players agreed to in most recent contracts. They don’t really want cheaters out of baseball for good. Otherwise, they wouldn’t give PERMISSION to use as much as you want UNTIL caught a third time. Hah! That’s how they keep playing year after year, decade after decade. David Ortiz, Bartolo Colon, Adrain Beltre, Nelson Cruz, etc.
JamieMoyer 4

deweybelongsinthehall
I don’t think Beltre was.

They sign contracts and agreements to follow rules and policies of mlb. If they break that to cheat, why would their words be believable?
PopeMarley
All the posting about “there goes the HOF” well why should it. The NFL suspends players for PED useage but all the fans care about is when they get him back, so he can help my fantasy team. If an NBA player gets suspended you hardly hear about it. To my knowledge no NFL players HOF induction was stopped by testing positive for PED’s.
Ichiro51
This is not the NFL or the NBA.

mikeyst13
How many of those guys you named had an official failed test and suspension? Zero.
Aircool
Did Cano officially fail a test for a PED? Or did he fail a test for a masking agent? Technically speaking, they are just inferring that he used PEDs, they have no evidence of actual use. No better than Mike127’s claims
Jeff Todd
Technically, there’s no public knowledge of what MLB knows. That said, Cano did drop the appeal.
PopeMarley
Jeff, can you give an opinion on why MLB fans get so enraged vs the other leagues.
jrbw
Very few are ‘enraged’.
Whatever is accepted, whether right or wrong, will eventually be embraced.
PopeMarley
WOW, you seem to be enraged from your other posts.
jrbw
Never denied it! I”m one of the few.
mikeyank55
He dropped his appeal because he was caught with his pants down.
The rules couldn’t be more clear. He may be a gifted athlete however what he benefits from with gifted hands he gives back with NO brains.
It’s game over for Cano. There will be attitude in the clubhouse from teammates pissed that he cost them the season.
Tom E. Snyder
Maybe not. He is already on the DL for what would be about the same amount of time.
deweybelongsinthehall
Official test means nothing. Criminal and civil court have different standards. HOF has criteria that are not just on the field driven. Suspicions and credibility are valid. Again, I personally do not want David Ortiz in the HOF. I bring him up only because I’m a Sox fan and try to remain objective. I still want Dwight Evan’s, Luis Tiant and yes, that hated Yankee, Thurman Munson in before ANYONE I suspect cheated.
bobbyvwannabe
Surprising and disappointing.

Trying to hang on??
MB923
He can start serving his suspension now:
All suspensions are without pay. In addition, a suspended player can be replaced on the active roster by another player. If a player is on the disabled list, the suspension is served while on the disabled list. Unless a suspension is reduced on appeal, a suspended player is not allowed to participate in that year’s post-season even if his suspension ends before then.
MB923
Jon Heyman – Cano suspension is for a diuretic, which is seen as a masking agent, suspension is treated as a PED tho
sgtpain20
The diuretic itself didn’t warrant the 80 game suspension…during the investigation, it appeared the “intent of usage” was to mask another agent.
24TheKid
I’ll be at his first home game back ready to boo him.
SouthsideSlugger
Probably ate some of that tainted meat down in Mexico with his pal Canelo Alvarez.
jaysfan1994
Looks like he was probably lying when his foundation head got caught on the Biogenesis HGH scandal. The same list that caught A-Rod, Ryan Braun and his teammate Nelson Cruz.
Well he should’ve quit while he was ahead but all this means is he’s likely going to age decently but this probably kills his sure HOF bound career.
srechter
I’m dying to hear cano’s response to this. Admission? Another “no idea how the got in there” denial? What a damn shame for all of baseball. One of the best hitters I’ve ever seen in person, with the smoothest swing on the planet. Dumb, Robby; dumb, dumb, Robby.
kgreenb363
Don’t do the crime if you can’t do the time. don’t do it!
thenextbilljames
Wouldn’t he be forced to serve the suspension after he is rehabed from his injury, since he has already been placed on the DL? Kind of like Steven Wright earlier this year.
jrbw
Can serve suspension on DL. What a stupid rule. Big consequence.
zaneduarte
He’s still going to be gone for 80 games…..doesn’t matter. I’m guessing you want him to miss the rest of his career because you are not a Mariners fan. This is devastating for us and I’m pretty sure if this happened to your star player that you wouldn’t be clamouring for a suspension on top of the 40-50 he already is going to miss.
mikeyst13
I think most fans actually would, I sure would. If the guys punishment is going to be he has to miss 80 games then he should have to miss 80 that he is actually eligible to play.
thegreatcerealfamine
It’s BS that his time on the DL is counting toward his 80 games suspension.
deweybelongsinthehall
Cerealman. Love it when we agree!
simschifan
This is bull crap! Not a fan of the mariners or specifically Cano but my mom takes the stuff he was busted with. It’s a blood pressure pill. Good lord mlb is becoming the nfl
madmanTX
Is your mom masking PED use too then? What team is she with?
simschifan
Do you know for a fact he is ?
mikeyst13
Doesn’t matter. It is on the banned substance list. It’s his job to know whats in the supplements and pills that he takes an know whether or not it is approved. It’s on the list for a reason and that’s because it can be used as a masking agent.
simschifan
And that’s my point, yes it’s on the list he got caught but it’s stupid to be on the list. Oh well
simschifan
Like I said not even a fan of his but he wasn’t technically caught with peds but let’s burn the guy at the stake cause he’s not on “our” team
mikeyst13
I don’t understand why you think it’s stupid that it’s on the list. It is a masking agent that people who are on PEDs use to flush the evidence from their system. If you don’t ban such masking agents then you really are not doing anything to solve the PED problem…
simschifan
So I’m retracting my statement. Yeah he’s guilty. Sounds like he was using it to mask something else. Sucks for Mariners fans. I don’t understand why a guy would even attempt to do this.
realgone2
Does it require a prescription? If so and Cano needed it for a legit medical reason then he should be able to supply paperwork saying so. Also, he should have notified MLB that he was on it.
Steven Chinwood
It’s used for multiple medical reasons, it’s not just for Blood Pressure.
gstarrett
your mom probably doesn’t take it to mask something else in a drug test…
zaneduarte
I am a lifelong M’s fan, I have loved every moment of Cano in a Mariners uni…..but NEVER accept anything from a doctor overseas…particularly in the Dominican. This is Cano’s fault for being either stupid or sneaky.
mikeyank55
Hey sim. Calm down or you are going to need you take blood pressure is going to blow up. When you get in your train later tonight you will not be able to drive because of ped’s.
madmanTX
What ailment? Bloating or water retention? Cut out the salty snacks instead.
The Ghost of Bobby Bonilla
His ailment is called Trying to Cycle Off of Roids. This is how you flush it from your system. He only gets tested up to 4 times a year, so was playing the percentages that he’d be clean by his next test. He lost.
Has probably been doing this for years. No HOF fornyou, moron.
chaseturrentine
In a stunning move to avoid paying Seattle’s recently announced “Head Tax,” the Seattle Mariners suspend players without pay to recoup costs. $12MM + $270 savings.
costergaard2
Well played, sir !
srechter
Ah, the “didn’t know it was banned and had nothing to do with ped’s” defense. Do you buy it? I’m honestly conflicted. Don’t know enough about furosemide to say with any educated confidence.
doctor lightning94
It’s literally a pill to help with blood pressure and bladder issues. I really don’t get it. look up the definition of diuretic. It literally says it’s a medication to help you pee. no joke.
gstarrett
it dilutes your pee allowing it to mask other drugs
simschifan
Wouldn’t the tests come back inconclusive?
bravesfan1993
I’m going to hold off on judging him. It’s literally a Lasix, a water pill.
simschifan
That’s what I’m saying
simschifan
But all the my team is the greatest folks just want to burn the guy at the stake already
gstarrett
it in itself is not a PED, it’s banned because it can mask PEDs through dilution.

Very disappointing, I’m a huge Cano fan…well, was, if he doesn’t have a good explanation for this.

The old fallback “I wasn’t aware”. Take accountability bro. Yea a doctor prescribed it to you, but you know to run it by MLB. Come-On-Man
bravesandcrewfan
Yanks send Clint Frazier over, dee to 2b, haniger to cf, Mariners send over pitching prospects?
Begamin
why would the yankees send over Frazier for pitching prospects
driftcat28 2
No thanks. Can probably get Neil Walker though
Ichiro51
Why. Just look internal. it’s not halfway through the season. Can was playing ok, not a huge contributing factor to start trading. Mariners have no prospect. Remember the articles this entire off-season on their diluted propects?
bravesandcrewfan
All understandable, but the yanks have pitching issues and I doubt the Mariners are sending over mlb ready. But they need competent bats for the postseason if they make it. Werth is too far down the decline.
costergaard2
The Yanks pitching problems have the best record in the game…
Steven Chinwood
HaHaHa..you can’t be serious
bravesandcrewfan
I apologize for not being familiar with their farm system, but Frazier is clearly mlb ready and the yanks have no place to put him. They’ll have to trade him at some point unless multiple outfielders get hurt, I’m merely pouncing on an opportunity. If they have to send more value then that’s fair. My main point was saying that Frazier would be a worthwhile pickup.
jrbw
Clint is not baseball smart enough to keep from giving himself a concussion hitting a wall with his head.
mikeyank55
Let’s face facts. Cash passed on canos rain day. Even though he signed another player to a bloated contract (3 less years and a lot less $$$), he flipped lots of players in 2016 to be in the position for real depth all the way down to AAA.
He’s not flipping Frazier for junk. We’re doing just fine.
Mariners season is over. Truth be told it was over before it began; both Astros and angels are too strong in division and even with cano the mariners are not in the class of the Yankees or Red Sox.
bigdaddyhacks
It’s only a matter of time until altuve get caught too. In all seriousness, as long as it’s not a pitching injury we can handle it. The lineup is long enough to absorb Robbie production. But I agree it’s time to make a move. Need a starter and reliever at this point to stay in the race. It’s not time to panic position player wise. I’d imagine,
Motter gets called up. And gamel will stay under watch and if he doesn’t produce werth will be up. I’ve been a ms fan my entire life. And I knew something would happen as the season has being going well so far. The baseball gods hate this team. As long as no pitching Injuries we will be ok. My worry is the clubhouse at this point.
realgone2
What was with the random accusation of Altuve? Mad because the Astros are much better than the crappy mariners?
bigdaddyhacks
What about 2.0 games
mikeyank55
Keep watching that number grow. Season is over. Clubhouse Chemistry finished. Too bad hacks. I enjoy your humor.
damon389
“only a matter of time until Altuve gets caught”… You must know something everybody else doesn’t.
Re Seattle making the playoffs. It was a longshot to begin with. For SEA to make the playoffs, that would mean that one of LAA, HOU, BOS or NYY doesn’t make the playoffs.
Seattle’s drought continues.
drfelix
Seriously?! lol. Thats approx $12M back in Seattle’s pocket to boost their team up even more. Non-contending teams will be looking to move contract players Offense & SP very soon (ie: Texas and Cole Hamels, etc, etc). Seattle can easily move Dee Gordon back to 2B as just one option.
But Brandon Phillips is dying to get back on a MLB roster. Seattle could easily have Phillips for cheap, and he could carry Seattle’s 2B issue over until Cano gets back…AND Seattle would still have roughly $12M to add someone like Cole Hamels, or another large contract SP (ie like Verlander last year with Detroit).
Don’t count Seattle out. If you think Haniger was great in the #6 spot, just wait until SPs actually have to pitch to him in front of Cruz in the #3 spot!
charlie2018
I have heard it’s a diuretic, but no explanation for why he took it. What was malady was it intended to “cure?”
realgone2
one thing it does is alleviate excess fluid due to heart failure. I doubt Cano has that.
Josh S
Did you cherry pick that from where you stopped reading Wikipedia or something? There’s a LOT more reasons this could be prescribed but yes I also doubt Cano has fluid build up from heart failure. Not that it’s anyone’s business what his medical problems are.
mikeyst13
Unfortunately he made it everyone’s business what his medical problems are the minute he took a banned substance. Now he has to provide a valid reason that he was taking it.
Josh S
Does he? Why? Would literally anyone who doesn’t already believe him change their mind when he tells them what it’s prescribed for? Would you? I doubt it. He took a banned substance and is missing 80 games. Period.
There is no obligation whatsoever for him to publicize his medical ailments and frankly no use for it either. Are we all going to feel warm fuzzies that “oh it’s for his liver, okay it’s all fine now nothing to see here”. It doesn’t change anything.
mikeyst13
If he wants any chance to change the public’s perception then yes, he does.
jrbw
He doesn’t care what people think. He plays for the money and he’s made a ton of it.
Josh S
The substance Furosemide/Lasix is used to treat a bunch of different things. It could be any of them. Some really minor, some more serious. Probably something minor considering he didn’t even look into the substance enough to know it was a “masker” (not even a PED).
qbass187
This drug is specifically band by major league baseball fan reason. And that reason isn’t Because they want their players constipated! Duh
3rdStrikeLooking
Do you actually read what you post???
mikeyank55
Is it too much to ask a $30 million a year player to bring his restricted drug list with him to a doctor?
And if the doctor still prescribes something on the list he contacts mlb HQ?
There’s $30 million reasons. Ok only $25 million. Or maybe you want to be invited to Cooperstown? That in itself may require too much brain power, given the fact that the dope walked away from a career with his number retired in Monument Park.
lovethegame27
it must have been Dee Gordon’s left overs haha

qbass187
Not a shock Another Yankee gets busted with performance enhancers. you know this has been going on, It’s just filthy in the Bronx.
Adam6710
Not surprised at all. Wasn’t he really close with A-Rod? And Melky, who himself tested positive?
But if you think this is unique to Yankees or former Yankees, take a look at the list of banned players– they hail from many organizations across both leagues.
If you throw stones at other teams players for using, you’re a fool. Every team has dirty/cheating/PED players.
Steven Chinwood
He does a great job of showing he’s a fool in so ways.
costergaard2
Whatever you say, troll. What team went through the era unscathed ?
Phil253
He admits he took the substance and from what it sounds like knew he did for quite some time. And also if you read into his statement so did the league. If that substance is found then you are retested. His retest came up negative for banned substance. There’s a process that a player goes through after being told they failed a test so if Cano wanted to admit his mistake before hand he legally couldn’t do so. I don’t think Cano is a PED user. I think he’s human and made an error in judgement. Attack that statement if you want to. I’m still disappointed because I think that he’s held to a much higher standard than others and he failed that responsibility.
The Ghost of Bobby Bonilla
I crack up at everyone making excuses for him and saying maybe there was a good reason for this.
Here are the facts: every member of the MLBPA is given lists of what they can and can’t take. It even includes vitamins and certain OTC stuff you might buy at GNC. They also tell you: IF YOU HAVE ANY DOUBT, PLEASE CALL THIS 1-800 NUMBER 24 HOURS A DAY, 7 DAYS A WEEK AND TALK TO ONE OF OUR PHAMACISTS THAT WILL ADVISE YOU WHAT TO DO.
Bottom line, Cano is a cheater. He used a drug that flushes steroids from your system. And on one of those random days where he hit 3 HRs off of some poor rookie schlub that didn’t cheat and was trying to break into the Bigs, he literally stole money from other (honest) players. He’s a bum and should be treated as such.
The Ghost of Bobby Bonilla
Whoever downvoted me: I have the list right in front of me. Forosemide is #31 on the list of banned substances on page 14. You also are told to call in all of your prescriptions to 719-785-2000 (option 2) before taking them. He would have been told NO WAY!
He’s a cheater.
Adam6710
I agree, he’s a cheater. But it’s fun to down vote.
Phil253
Breaking the rules isn’t defensible. He probably decided to drop his appeal when he got hurt. The drug is actually used for a lot of medical problems. Do some research. It also does require a prescription. He was prescribed the drug. He’s also not obligated to say what he’s been treated for because it’s not our business. Laws protect you against such things. Until you have all the facts reserve your high horse judgement.
darkstar61
It is hysterical seeing these “he doesn’t have to tell anyone why he took it” posts
It’s silly because yeah, he does – he had to tell MLB why he took it to try to prove he wasnt masking PED use
But obviously he couldn’t come up with a good excuse why he was taking this banned substance as MLB has now suspended him for 80 days (costing him more money than most will see in their lifetime)
So sure, keep your desperate “there might have been a good reason” nonsense in the face of MLB saying nope, he couldn’t provide a good reason

Wow, that comes as a surprise.
What isn’t a surprise is that he said he was unaware of it and was doing what the team doctors said. I wonder if this impacts a hall of fame case, if he had a serious one.

Turns out Cano’s positive test was DONE AND KNOWN ABOUT IN THE OFF-SEASON!!!
So they knew about it through spring training and the games already played.
Holy H E C K!! WE’RE BEING SCAMMED AND MLB IS DOING THE SCAMMING!!
Waited until he was already going on the DL, if it ever happened, who knew he’d get hurt!
Now HE says he’ll just accept the suspension and not appeal. Cano and so many others likely use in EVERY off-season and MLB says nothing about any positive tests results.
This game has gotten away from all common sense, morality, ethics, fairness, tradition, character, and good sportsmanlike conduct, if there ever was any.
Robertowannabe
There are procedures that must be followed based on the labor contract.. If you had procedures in your work rules, you would expect them to be followed as well. I highly doubt there was a massive conspiracy in waiting for a DL stint to suspend him. You think they would have waited all season and into next?
jrbw
WAIT!!! WHAT?
‘There are procedures that must be followed based on the labor contract.. If you had procedures in your work rules, you would expect them to be followed as well.”
I REALLY MUST READ THAT AGAIN!!!
‘There are procedures that must be followed based on the labor contract.. If you had procedures in your work rules, you would expect them to be followed as well.”
Mr. Cano and every other cheater in MLB signs their names to the labor contract that you speak of every season. Said contract stated “procedures in the work rules” THAT WE EXPECT THEM TO FOLLOW!!!!!
When they take banned substances they ARE NOT FOLLOWING those procedures and rules willingly and by choices and decisions that they make with THEMSELVES to cheat and ignore the contract they’ve signed.
You’re talking about a trivial procedure for AFTER they’ve already been caught cheating!
Absurd!
Cat Mando
jrbw……comprehension eludes you.
jrbw
No, Cat…. what eludes me is the acceptance of immoral, unethical, unsportsmanlike, dishonest, low-character behavior of adults who are in the business of individual and team competition that allows cheating and unfair play by some players while other players hold to their words and committed fair and reputable conduct to make their living playing baseball.
PopeMarley
God that’s a long sentence from up on your soapbox.
Cat Mando
jrbw…..What eludes you is common sense. It has been explained to you over and over that the JDA approved by both the players and owners has a procedure, but you refuse to accept or acknowledge that.
mlbplayers.com/pdf9/5450924.pdf
Read it, learn and quit embarrassing yourself.
jrbw
I know every word of the agreement. The so-called “procedure” doesn’t take from Dec-Jan until May 15 to come to completion. The procedure is written to allow players to use PEDs and HGH and remain playing the game for as long as possible. It was written that way after the Biogenesis drug suspensions in 2013 and and again in 2017. It’s written to give permission to players who want to use banned substances, take consequences that the players know in advance, and are WILLING to take with ‘the most sincere apologies and excuses to the fans’, KNOWING that they won’t lose their jobs, merchandise will still sell, fans with still love them, and they get nice long vacations!
Common sense, indeed!
Cat Mando
It’s reviewed/added to/rewritten every year genius. Testing was finally placed at WADA standards after Biogenesis One and only one lab, the WADA approved facility in Montreal does all testing and only the head of the facility does the tests.
You say that you have read it and still come to that inane conclusion that it’s rigged to let them play? Unbelievable..
3rdStrikeLooking
Reading your comments are like reading the National Enquirer. Trash. Please stop. Now.
Cat Mando
jrbw……The MLB cannot say anything until a final outcome is reached. That is in the JDA. It’s called confidentiality. MLBPA is not allowed to reveal a failed test and neither is the player until the final outcome. There is a process to be followed. Wise up.
A case such this must also go before IPA (Independent Program Administrator) who is selected jointly by, but not affiliated with’ the MLBPA and MLB. All records were reviewed and it was determined that the prescription was used to mask…not for an ailment.
Jeff Todd
This is not the case. There’s a process for handling these matters. The league doesn’t just slap an 80-game suspension down without process. So far as we know, there’s zero reason to think there’s any kind of conspiracy.
jrbw
“Cano, 35, had been discussing the matter with the league since the test results came in over the winter, per Heyman (via Twitter). It seems fair to presume that the league felt there was sufficient evidence to support a finding that Cano had avoided detection of a PED. The timing of the news makes sense, given that Cano had just hit the DL with a fractured right hand that was likely to keep him out for some time. By dropping any appeal rights now, he can rehab that injury while serving out the suspension.”
THIS IS ABSOLUTELY THE WORST MANIPULATIVE BEHAVIOR BY CANO AND MLB TO THIS DAY.
ONLY EQUAL TO THE KNOWN USE OF STEROIDS BY MCGWIRE, SOSA, BONDS, ETC. DURING THE SEASON THAT THEY PLAYED AND IT WAS IGNORED BY MLB.
PopeMarley
LOOK FOLKS IT’S THE MORAL POLICE. Calm down guy it’s gonna be ok.
Robertowannabe
Hey jrbw,, exactly what major harm has befallen you or anyone else over the timing of this suspension? About the same time last year when Marte was suspended in Pittsburgh and I believe his test was in the off season as well. Not the first rodeo here….. Lighten up Francis!
bravesandcrewfan
SCREAMING REEEE
Jeff Todd
You seem to be mis-reading what was posed there. So far as we know, the league was proceeding through its normal processes. Cano was already in the course of dropping the appeal when he was hurt. The timing just lined up that way.
mikeyst13
Just because you don’t understand the process that is followed after a failed test doesn’t make it a conspiracy.
wadewar
We should know by now Major League baseball overrules anything a doctor would prescribe to a player. Ask Chris Davis about that. I just wonder why no Yankees ever get a failed drug test. Why is that? No Red Sox either everyone knows Ortiz did it too

The Ortiz situation requires a lengthy discussion. You can look it up if you are referring to the 2003 incident. As for no Red Sox or Yankees getting suspended… Chavis was just suspended earlier this year and im pretty sure Kopech was as well when he was in the Sox system.
Cat Mando
” Ask Chris Davis about that”. Davis had a TUE for Adderall in previous seasons but failed to apply for one again. That is on him, no one else.

Why in the world is furosemide banned by MLB? I take it to help with water in my legs. I PROMISE you that I am not hitting a baseball 450 feet after I take it either. Just because something can be used as a masking agent, does not mean it IS being used as a masking agent. Tissue boxes can be used as shoes, but I don’t think shoe stores should start selling them because of that. We have taken the drug mania too far here.
Cat Mando
“Why in the world is furosemide banned by MLB?” Because a diuretic is also used as a masking agent for those required to take urine tests. If a player has a legit need he can get a TUE (Therapeutic Use Exemption) from MLB by following the proper channels. If there is a legit need and a prescription is issued by an MLB/MLBPA approved Dr. than there is no harm/no foul.

Jeff Todd,
I think a really good article would be an explanation of the testing program and the review and appeals process when a positive test occurs. You can reference the JDA online.
People seem to think that there is some ambiguity or possible mistakes when players get nailed with positive tests. Call it the Ryan Braun Effect, if you will.
I think a good explanation of the whole process would open people’s eyes to the cheating that still is going on. (Though somewhat less frequently than a decade ago).

I’m disappointed obviously, but as a mariners fan, there’s no one I love more than Robbie. At least it wasn’t like a full performance enhancing drug thing, but, still disappointed. But I’m still rooting for Robbie all the time no matter what.
Polish Hammer
Really? Yeah he didn’t test positive for steroids just for the drug that masks or covers the results when tested for the PEDs.
ripcookies
I’m honestly more surprised that it took this long, rather than, that he got caught.
Polish Hammer
The teams should have to keep that one roster spot vacant on the active roster while he serves the suspension. That will keep these teams from going with cheaters.
jdgoat
You can’t punish them for that. How could they possibly know?
Polish Hammer
They have people on their payrolls that scout every nuance and others that deal in strength training…they should definitely have an idea when guys are getting a boost. Just like 5he players that take the chance at a big payday and hope they don’t get caught, teams also take a flier on a questionable guy. If you punish the teams that carry cheaters they’ll cut back on cheaters in the game.
bucketbrew35
Well I guess this ends the argument of who the best second basemen of their generation was. As in Cano vs Utley. I always thought Cano was a little overrated (and apparently so does Fangraphs when compared to Baseball Reference). So at this point I’d certainly have to give that title to Chase.
This whole situation is unfortunate however. As a Phillies fan, if this was Chase Utley, I’d be crushed. I truly feel for the Mariners and Yankees fans out there. This is truly upsetting.
jdgoat
The fact that his suspension is 80 games is very telling. Had he been able to prove that he used it for medical reasons, he probably at the very least could have gotten it reduced. I believe it was Mondesi jr who had his suspension shortened since he could prove the substance was in medicine. I think Chris Davis has a short one as well since his was more of a mistake rather than an attempt to cheat
baseballhobo
If I had a HOF vote, I would still vote for Cano.

So yeah after reading and hearing more about this story he is guilty on this. Sounds like he was hiding something else. So yeah screw him.
willclarksgauchos
Unless the medical issue he was treated for in DR was hypertension, edema, congestive heart failure, liver cirrhosis, nephrotic syndrome, swelling of the brain or lungs or kidney disease – all of which indicate Lasix (brand name), then he certainly knowingly used PEDs and is using this drug to cover it up.
22222pete
He said it was hypertension. Hypertension can be trasient if related ro stress, anxiety and panic attacks so may not show up in later tests. The Dr treating the condition would not know its transient and treated it with appropriate drugs. Excess sodium intake and alcohol use can elevate blood pressure and cause bloating/edema and lasix helps with that.
willclarksgauchos
Lasix is not generally indicated for transient hypertension, eating salty foods or drinking some beers. This will not be overturned in arbitration. Evidence that he waited until he went on the DL to serve his suspension, rather than continue fighting it corroborates the fact that he and his agent know this will not be overturned in arbitration because there will be no arbitration.
Phil253
Doesn’t mean it would have been PED. You can also use it to mask marijuana use… something that’s legal in Seattle.
22222pete
They dont random test for marijuana in MLB. High blood pressure is a legitimate reason (assuming its true)
Phil253
No, but they do random test and of say he had used a bit of weed taking lasix would be a way to “flush” it. Also Cano has had surgery for a sports hernia and played through many injuries and has also been sidelined from time to time by illness. Is it that far a stretch that a water pill might help him pee on a more regular basis? Or is actually to treat something like high blood pressure. Just because it’s a masking agent doesn’t mean that was it’s use and maybe he’s got 80 games because he’s not backing down from his position and mlb wants to make an example of him.
Robertowannabe
It was determined that there was no medical reason for the diuretic to be needed. Per the labor agreement, he got his suspension. end of story.
jrbw
Whatever is accepted, whether right or wrong, will eventually be embraced.
Polish Hammer
All he has to do is apologize by saying he took it just that one time (Pettite) or give a vague apology for something (Giambi) and all’s good and get a standing O next time on the field.
Robertowannabe
Phil253, legal under the law but per the labor agreement, against baseball rules. 2 different guidelines.
22222pete
This is nonsense. Its Lasix which is used for any number of medical issues. Anyone being treated in some less developed countries will tell you the Doctors usually hand you a bag of pills and you usually dont even know what they are or if they are its labeled its in a different language.
If you are being treated for high blood pressure you arent waiting to check the meds list to make sure its OK.
He has a good chance of beating this in arbitration. MLB obviously trying to help Mariners save 12 million dollars with Cano heading to DL for 6 months thinking Cano might be pressured to waive his right to appeal to get on the field earlier
I say dont do it Cano , as this tactic will be used on others as well if you cave.
PopeMarley
Uh he dropped his appeal. Knew he couldn’t win, shows guilt, and he’s thanking his lucky stars on that hbp….
Robertowannabe
It was determined that he had no medical need for the Lasix. If there was no medical need to increase ones urine output, deductive reasoning leads one to believe that it would have been used as a masking agent for PEDs being used. That is why the labor agreement spells out that if you have a positive test for a diuretic and you have no medical need for one, it is the same as a positive PED test. Please read the article that this board is attached to…….smh…..lots..
darkstar61
If he were using it for good reason to treat a medical condition by request of a doctor…
…well, why couldn’t he prove that to MLB and avoid the suspension/loss of millions?
So while you’re clearly desperate to try and excuse his use of this substance, he himself couldn’t at all. See the issue there?
Colorado Red
WAH
Nice try Seattle fan.
He was cheating, and got caught.
Cam
Wait, what? You’re saying he won’t have time to make a single phone call, or log in to a single website (which is provided to all players), to check if it’s okay for him to start popping these pills every day?
He could make that call or check the website in less time than it takes for him to walk out the door of the Doctors.
I am on treatment for high blood pressure – it’s not an emergency situation – and I get to scan through most of MLBTR’s daily posts while I wait for my prescription to be filled.
Bocephus
Get real Brohiem!!!
Cat Mando
22222pete….It’s appropriate that your post started with “This is nonsense”. It was nice to warn us that the rest of your post was.

LOVED Verlander’s Twitter response.
Aaaand excuse coming in
3…. 2….. 1……
jdgoat
He also defended Johnny Peralta, a teammate, when he was suspended. He shouldn’t be throwing stones from glass houses
Polish Hammer
Verlanders been a crybaby for years. Cried about the Tribe stealing his signs years ago in Cleveland, then went home to Detroit and they shelled him again.
Bocephus
Still on point and funny as hell.
Cam
There is not a single name in the MLB that would shock me if busted for banned drugs.
Anyone questioning his ability to do something as simple as making a phone call, or jumping on his phone, to find out if he can take this drug, is missing the obvious point – he knew what he was doing the whole time. It’s a masking agent that is used as part of a cycle. The question here isn’t whether he knew if it was okay to use it – it’s a question what drugs he is using that this masking agent covers up.
He gets paid a quarter of a billion dollars to play a game – of course he’s not going to a doctor in the DR for some help peeing properly.
Let’s keep in mind as well – the Robinson Cano foundation was implicated in the Biogenesis scandal. Coincidence? Nah.
Colorado Red
Good by HOF.
You cheat, you should never ever get in.
jdgoat
The problem is that some guys who are already in who also cheated. We don’t know who did and didn’t, so why not just let the best players all in with an asterisk?
jd396
Some people drink and drive and don’t get caught. We don’t know who did and who didn’t. Let’s just put one on everyone’s record with an asterisk on everyone.
jdgoat
That’s obviously apples to oranges jd396. Come on
agentx
I agree with JDGoat about other guilty parties already being in.
Used-car-salesman-turned-Commissioner Bud Selig and the most-brilliant-manager-never-to-have-suspected-anything-suspicious Tony La Russa also got fast-tracked into the Hall of Fame despite having as much to do with prolonging the PED crisis as any of the Hall of Fame-caliber players who used.
tiger9
Just once….I want to see one of these cheating gasbags admit to being on drugs. The fact that he says it wasn’t anything illegal just sounds like every other cheater. No room for you in the HOF. Sit in the corner with Clemens and Bonds….chumps..
jdgoat
Some of them would also be accidental though. It might be a small few, but it’s bound to happen
jwr0223
Accidental??? If I am making 22M per year believe me there would be no accidental. Either a cheat or a dope….no pun intended.
jd396
The accident thing is all PR.
the kutch
His suspension should have started after he becomes eligible to play, not while he was going to miss time anyway with an injury….make cheating hurt.
Polish Hammer
No, but they should have to keep his slot on the active roster vacated, that would make teams feel the pinch for harboring cheaters.
darkstar61
What an idiotic idea with absolutely zero merit.
So now his teammates must risk injury for more than half the season, and his team must be in an even worse position to win than just losing him for more than half the season, solely because the player went behind the teams backs and did something against the rules?
Polish Hammer
Yup
corey
Not an idiotic idea. While I see your point, it would make teams think twice about resigning these players who have had a history of using and probably create more of a self policeing policy among the clubs AND in the clubhouse, instead of this what happens in the clubhouse stays in the clubhouse mentality.
66TheNumberOfTheBest
When people are voting for Bonds and Clemens for the HOF and A-Rod gets to keep his $500 million, all of the dates with super models and his marquee TV jobs, there is not one single reason for a player to not cheat.
jd396
They should load PED users up on diuretics. Then, tie them to a chair and make them slam 24 ounces of gas station coffee every hour while playing the directors cuts of all the Hobbit and LOTR movies in sequence… without letting him get up to pee.
jeb39999
Seems like many PED suspensions come back to something a doctor gave them in the Dominion Republic…
Polish Hammer
Dominican Republic too…
volkoff
I would like to see the rationale behind this decision, furosemide is just a diuretic used by many with HTN, if the MLB is making rules to ban players from taking medications to keep them healthy than I think it back tracks on the very reason their bans. Not to mention, in hot and humid clients there is a substantial increase in water retention in the body which correlates directly to why he would need to take it. I’m not saying he didn’t do anything, just that it seems they are making a decision on a ‘hunch’ that he took something not facts, so everyone is guilty till proven innocent. He could probably sue over this in the federal court system, not to mention the MLB is prohibited from digging around in his past Medical history according to the HIPAA act
Cat Mando
volkoff – You are wrong on so many counts it’s hard to decide where to begin.
All diuretics (which are used to try and flush the system of PED’s) are banned without a Therapeutic Use Exemption. It’s not that hard of a procedure. There are players in MLB who have a legit reason and prescription from an MLB/MLBPA approved Dr. for some banned items.
Players have access to info (a website, a hard copy, and a 247 phone number) detailing every banned item including OTC supplements. There is no excuse.
The arbitration system was set up to avoid clogging the judicial system. If he challenged his suspension and lost the only way a court would hear his case is if he could prove incompetence or bias on the part of the arbitrator. Remember A-Rod threating to sue? Did he? No, because he knew it would never get heard.
HIPPAA does not apply when a player signs an MLB contract. Player are required to sign a release so medical can be shared. It is perfectly legal…look it up.
As far as a hunch, his medical and the Dr. diagnosis were examined and it was determined by the JDA IPA (Independent Program Administrator – hired jointly by MLB and MLBPA) that there was no legit reason for the prescription.
panickingcalmly
The appeals and investigation process is lengthy in MLB. Cano failed a drug test before this season began, and MLB was able to prove that he was using this drug as a masking agent. Cano dropped his appeal because he’s on the DL and he’s expected to miss almost two months. This isn’t just a hunch, and it doesn’t happen overnight. I’m sure there are players who get popped for a failed test, then actually win their appeal, and no one ever hears about it. Also. you know nothing about HIPPA.
jd396
*sigh*

Long time coming ….
c03bra
surprised no one has mentioned the rumors from back in 2012 about Cano
ChiSoxCity
The Yankees lead the way in PEDs, probably where this all started with Cano. If you think I’m lying, look at their players—they’re all “enhanced”. They lead the way in sign-stealing too, which is why they’re crushing opposing pitchers and dominating the league.
mike156
Of course, the Evil Empire has an entire flying brigade of specially trained EMT ready to administer to all the boys in Pinstripes. And none of their accomplishments on the field could possibly be a result of some of them being good.
I have to tell you, comments like yours don’t enhance the discussion.
jleve618
You’re no fun.
corey
Always thought sign stealing to be a part of the game. If you are using the same worn out signs to the point that others playing the game notice and adjust, you are doing something wrong.
corey
Nothing surprises me anymore. For those of you who are wondering why at this point in his career, I ask how long has he been getting away with it? If he has been cheating all along and covering it up, why would he change now? Especially now that he is getting older and achier. Oh well, say goodbye to the Hall cheater.
deweybelongsinthehall
Can someone explain how Cano can drop his appeal to coincide his down and injury rehab times whereas Steven Wright had to first prove himself healthy before his abuse suspension kicked in? i recognize different provisions apply but one would think consistency would apply. Hopefully this gets corrected.
Polish Hammer
It’s MLB where they have different standards. Years ago players pissed hot and were instantly suspended and were told they could appeal and if they won would get their money back. Raffy Palmiero does and was able to play through it until he joined the 500/3000 club and then had to sit.
Doc44
It’s official. Every Dominican player has used steroids.

If you violate our commenting policy, your post comes down. In this case, I don’t know whether or why your comment was “censored.” I do see a comment from you on this thread that is still there, so maybe you are just overlooking it.
Regarding your general complaints, you may want to brush up on your understanding of free speech principles and political theory before pursuing that line of argument.

Curious what Seattle will do with Cano after his suspension. I doubt he will reclaim his second base job and will be waivered.
Cat Mando
They still owe him $120M after this year…I doubt it.
jrbw
New Drug Policy should state – All suspended players will forfeit the remainder of their contract money to Minor League Baseball players. Start an account for it to be distributed to AAA teams equally.
jimcatfish
I was happy when Cano left the Yankees… now i’m ecstatic
Ozric40
Did the Mariners trade for Dee Gordon knowing that at some point in the season Cano would probably be suspended?
jrbw
Yes! They knew in spring training.
Oh, just went back to check Gordon signing – was in December ’17, Cano testing could have already been done. IDK.

His Hall of Fame induction is over!
