The Phillies will place infielder Pedro Florimon on the 10-day DL with a broken foot, as Matt Gelb of The Athletic was among those to tweet. It is not yet known who’ll take his place on the roster.
Details of the injury are not available at this time, so his anticipated timeline remains a mystery. Florimon, a talented defender, has spent most of his time this season at shortstop. The Phils do still have two players on the active roster — Scott Kingery and Jesmuel Valentin — capable of playing that position defensively.
The 31-year-old Florimon won a reserve job in camp and has ended up being quite a useful asset thus far. He’s slashing a healthy .268/.328/.500 through 61 plate appearances, which is quite a bit more output than he customarily produces.
An eight-year MLB veteran, Florimon has only twice taken more than one hundred plate appearances in a given season — the 2012 and 2013 seasons, which he spent with the Twins. Despite strong offensive numbers over the past two seasons in Philly, in limited opportunities, Florimon carries a meager .213/.273/.322 career batting line in 852 career trips to the dish.

He fouled a ball off his foot in his first AB. Since JP Crawford not ready yet, they will have to get creative and probably make a 40 man roster move since no one in the IF at AAA Lehigh Valley is on it.

Roman Quinn is the only one who’s played SS professionally, he was drafted as one, but hasn’t played there since 2014 so not ideal, but still better than other options or having to make a 40 man move.

He’s out, had surgery on his finger

Jesmuel Valentín

Valentin and Kingery can both play SS and Hernandez probably could in a pinch (he has before). I’d give Meneses a shot. He’s played a few different positions and is currently a league leader at AAA (.329 BA,. .928 OPS). Downside is he’s not as versatile — mostly OF or 1B, he’s another RH bat and he requires a roster spot.

Oh no, who will pitch in a mop up role for them?
In all seriousness I sincerely hope he recovers quickly.

Don’t have to bring up an infielder with Crawford back soon. Good opportunity to give some kid a look at the MLB level. Could we have a Dylan Cozens sighting? I hope Florimon doesn’t have a Ben Simmons type of broken foot.

Cozens hitting under .200 the past month,. Not likely even though we could use more LH power. Cozens may never make it at the rate he’s going. Still strikes out way too much and still can’t hit LH pitching.

Really came to appreciate Pedro during his time in Pittsburgh. Very good base runner, well above average at all INF spots except 1B, always hustles and never complains. And even though his batting numbers look paltry, he always seemed to come up with a couple of clutch hits in important games every year. Here’s to a speedy recovery for him.
