11:55am: Righty Scott Copeland is the other pitcher heading up, per MLB.com’s Anthony DiComo (via Twitter). He’ll also need to be added to the 40-man.
Copeland, 30, briefly cracked the majors back in 2015. He has taken five starts this year in the upper minors, working to a 3.81 ERA with 6.7 K/9 against 5.4 BB/9 in 28 1/3 innings.
11:48am: New York will likely also add another arm, Mike Puma of the New York Post reports on Twitter. It’s not yet clear who that will be, but Puma says the mystery hurler may currently be on the Double-A roster.
11:12am: The Mets are set to promote right-hander Tim Peterson to the majors, per Ken Davidoff of the New York Post. Corresponding roster moves have yet to be announced.
Peterson, 27, has pitched in the minors since 2012, when he was taken with a 20th round pick out of the University of Kentucky. He reached the Triple-A level briefly last year after a strong showing at Double-A, then returned to Las Vegas to begin the current campaign.
Over his 22 appearances this year, Peterson has thrown 27 2/3 innings of 3.58 ERA ball. He has held opposing batters to 18 hits and eight walks while racking up forty strikeouts.
While the New York organization surely preferred not to make any 40-man moves, the club’s pitching depth has been pressed to its limits by recent injuries. Noah Syndergaard was supposed to start today but ended up on the DL, leaving Jason Vargas to take the ball on short rest. And Steven Matz left his outing yesterday early, putting further strain on the relief unit. (Rather improbably, both he and Syndergaard were felled in succession by finger injuries.)

Jason Vargas coming today with a 10.68 ERA……pretty nice signing

hindsight is 20/20. A lot of people around here thought it was a solid pick up for the back of that rotation.
Bill
He pitched well tonight, and 2 starts ago. So maybe he’s coming around.
mikeyank55
Or maybe he ran into luck with a marlins team that was tanking at the moment and a braves team that has been fizzling for a couple of weeks.
mikeyank55
I’m hoping that he pitches against the Yankees soon. We may witness a first in MLB history with a manager asking to invoke the mercy rule and end the beating early.

27…Young? Not for MLB.
srechter
Yeah I found that odd as well

Me, too. And I evidently wrote it. (Now deleted.)

No one said he was young…he’s following his dream…give him a chance!

When are we going to start holding Sandy Alderman accountable for the entire franchise being a laughing stock….again.
nymetsking
I hope never. Would be unfair to hold a random person responsible for Sandy Alderson’s failures.
mikeyank55
I think it’s great that there is such depth in the farm system that the Mets can easily take their TOP prospects and promote them early.
Just wondering if any of them will be held back for the red eye flight from Vegas to save on expenses?

“When are we going to start holding Sandy Anderson accountable. . . “
What you mean “we”, white man? Unless your name is Katz or Wilpon the only correct answer is “never.”
And you don’t appear to understand the paradigm here. Post Madoff, the Wilpon group was in serious danger of losing the ability to continue as owners. Despite playing in one of the largest markets, the Wilpons were (and still are) in debt due to 1) new stadium, 2) SNY, 3) their purchase of Nelson Doubleday’s interest in the team.
SA was brought in to stabilize the team’s finances and allow the Wilpons time to recover. His job was and is to please the Wilpons, not you and not fans in general. From everything I’ve read Mets ownership remains very happy with SA and that’s all that counts. The only way you get a new GM is if SA either retires or is kicked upstairs—and you might as well get to know John Ricco the current assistant GM as he has been their designated successor for years.

I’m not sure a .500 team that is decimated by injuries qualifies as a laughingstock. A month ago they were the surprise team in baseball.
Find me any expert who after the Mets fell short in the World Series in 2015 didn’t think they’d remain one of baseball’s best teams for the following 3 years. They’ve had terrible luck.
Unfortunately, that luck continues and not just on the field. While I still think it is feasible the Mets could finish above Philly and Atlanta and squeeze into a wild card spot this year, it is really hard to argue that from 2019 on that those franchises aren’t going to be ahead of the Mets (along with the Nationals).
And while I would defend the job that Alderson has done (in the sense that I think he has been ok overall) I do think that when and if the time comes to rebuild that he will probably have to go in favor of someone younger and better situated to handle what will be at least a two year rebuild.

The only way the Mets see the post-season this year is on TV!
mikeyank55
Hey Jake from State Farm. They were not THE surprise team. They were a team off to a hot start after a few weeks.
It’s not bad luck when injuries present themselves with players who’s history is littered with DL stints as well as over the hill players. Add to that the devastating affects of “TC”’s pitching staff management where young arms were put in harms way by blowing way past any sensible innings limit.
Sum total is a team heading in the wrong direction in a division where the Braves and Phil’s are no longer push overs. Rather those teams have paid their dues during a proper rebuild, the Mets’ current roster offers to sensible fan meaningful hope.
The clock is ticking on a full rebuild. A lack of ownership commitment and a management team that is totally inadequate causes predictions for a long and bungled rebuild future rather than a focused rebuild.

Next week..Mets select the contract of Tim Tebow.

Well Sandy has had salary constraints. Will that Madoff debt ever be made up?
mikeyank55
Hey Jorge-this has NOTHING to do with madoff debt. This has EVERYTHING to do with selfish owners who are raping National League fans in NYC by burdening the franchise with overhead to cover family members and friends at the expense of meaningful investment for sustainable success.
This includes the hiring of incompetent management and having no basis to direct or change direction.

The strongest criticism of Alderson has to be the total lack of results from the July/August 2017 roster dump.
Jaime Callahan?
Jacob Rhame?
Gerson Bautista?
Ryder Ryan?
Stephen Nogosek?
Drew Smith?

Be fair. Jury’s still out on those guys
