The Mariners announced Wednesday night that the Washington State Major League Baseball Stadium Public Facilities District Board approved the terms of a new 25-year lease for the team to remain at Safeco Field. There are also a pair of three-year options on the lease that could extend the Mariners’ stay in the park all the way through 2049.
“We want this ballpark to be our home for the next 100 years,” said Mariners chairman John Stanton in a statement. “Safeco Field should be to Seattle and to the Mariners what Wrigley Field is to Chicago and the Cubs and Fenway Park is to Boston and the Red Sox. We sincerely appreciate our partnership with the PFD, who share our vision to ensure that our fans will continue to enjoy Major League Baseball in a state-of-the-art facility for decades to come.”
Full specifics of the deal are available in the team’s announcement above, but the Mariners will be contributing roughly $650MM to the PFD over the life of the lease, which will go toward rent, maintenance, improvements and a neighborhood improvement fund, among other expenditures.
The agreement for the Mariners comes at a time when many organizations are gravitating toward new (and often unnecessary) playing facilities. The Braves recently moved into SunTrust Park after just 20 seasons at Turner Field, while the Rangers are prepping to move into a new facility in 2020 despite the fact that Globe Life Park (formerly Ameriquest Field and the Ballpark in Arlington) opened in 1994. The D-backs, too, are in the nascent stages of moving into a new stadium after Maricopa County recently agreed to let the team begin searching for locations for a new facility.

Great news. Happy for Mariners’ fans.
Safeco is an Iconic ballpark.
matthew102402
Have you ever been? It’s gorgeous there.
3rdStrikeLooking
My bet is no he has not.
cuscus85
I’m an Angels fan from SoCal and just visited during the recent Angels and Mariners series. Beautiful park and city. Glad they’re staying!
bigkempin
You must have pretty low standards for something being iconic.
mikeyank55
It’s a great place to watch a game. I sat near Jay Z’s box behind the plate, though he doesn’t go to games there. No longer having Cano’s back he’s taken his money and enjoying New York.
What he did is comparable to selling the Indians manhattan island. Lol
Steven Chinwood
Beautiful..yes “Iconic”…NO. That is a word to describe Wrigley, Fenway, and Dodger Stadium.
marinersblue96
Dodger Stadium is vastly over-rated. 3rd best in it’s own division. Safeco is far and away the best ballpark in the AL West.
bradthebluefish
That’s quite the statement. Not disagreeing… I haven’t been. Rangers ballpark looks amazing from the outside. And the Angels have a huge parking lot which is helpful. Just like a football stadium (which I believe it once was). Astros have a nice modern park too.
ateam043
If I understood your comment correctly you are stating Dodger Stadium is the 3rd most iconic stadium in its own division.
How is Petco (Padres), AT&T (Giants) etc more iconic than Dodger stadium in your opinion?
jekporkins
I’ll chime in because I love debates about baseball stadiums….
I don’t think there’s nothing truly iconic about Dodger Stadium except for the fact it’s been around so long. So has Oakland Colosseum, but nobody would call that trainwreck iconic after Mt. Davis destroyed it.
What’s memorable about Dodger Stadium except the traffic? The location is practical but that’s about it. It’s a fine stadium, don’t get me wrong, but great weather and the fact its’ so old shouldn’t bump it to iconic in my eyes.
AT&T is right on the water, offers insane views, has arguably the best food in all the majors, is set in downtown San Francisco, has McCovey Cove where home runs splash, offers free views of the game to passerbys, can be reached by car/ferry/train/bus, has a old-school and unique design including the Coke bottle slide and glove beyond the CF bleachers, and has become a huge part of San Francisco’s recent history. I have been to almost every major league ballpark (including Seattle and L.A.) and it’s among the top 3 in the majors.
Petco is is downtown San Diego, has a beautiful design, and has a unique aspect with the Western Metal Supply Company along the foul line built in. I certainly wouldn’t call it iconic, but it’s a beautiful park.
marinersblue96
I don’t think there is anything iconic regarding Dodger Stadium, besides the view. The stadium itself is pretty plain. Petco and AT&T are gorgeous venues.
Arlington has funky sightlines and the dimensions are too small.
Angels Stadium is a football stadium dressed like a baseball venue.
Minute Made is much better since they got rid of the atrocity of Tal’s hill.
Oakland Coliseum is a cesspool, the worst stadium in all of professional sports and an embarrassment to both MLB and the NFL.
jekporkins
I always say ‘lipstick on a pig’ when describing Angels Stadium. The best part about it was the price. We got two seats right along the right field foul line for $15 each. I have no idea what they were doing with the rock pile thing. A for effort, I guess.
Kennon Riley
Rangers ballpark is a dump. The only two stadiums worse are Tropicana and Oakland Coliseum, but nobody goes to their games so do they even count?
cuscus85
Angels stadium was a baseball stadium first. Then converted to a football stadium for the LA Rams and then converted back again roughly around 96 or 97.
I think the stadium is still in great condition and the team really keeps up on the maintenance. Always upgrading. I hope they never move. Great location and love the “iconic” Big A that’s been there for ages. Especially when it’s lit up after a win.
the sterling don
It’s lit up all the time now.. shows giveaway dates etc. Hard as hell to read while you’re driving by btw
Bocephus
Wow you just described Safeco as “Iconic” you can’t be serious. Look the word up guy.
3rdStrikeLooking
Just downvote him. He comments to just comment. Must think he is auditioning to be a paid staff writer.
I was going to hammer use of iconic, but its pointless in him. Ive been to every ball park except Mets, and I would agree that its nice, but not iconic. And Nice is used if no one around you is eating those awful rosemary garlic fries.
jleve618
You sound exaxtly like the type of person I hope to never have to share a room with.
xabial
Nobody responds to you because they don’t want you downvote their comment 4x times and say “wow, look at the downvotes!” over and over.
You’re the biggest troll here. Why Most people don’t even think it’s worth their time to call you out on your posts which NEVER offer anything substantial (unless u count attacks)
Best is when, you randomly take shots, bring up my name (or others) as first post of threads
If you have any honor or dignity? try engage in positive baseball dialogue, instead of trashing me (and other posters) 99% of time you post..

I may ramble, go on tangents and nowhere near as polished writer as Steve, Jeff, Tim, Connor, and all the mlbtr staff, but I always try to contribute, I’m proud of the work I’ve done here, throughout the years, even though made (no life) multiple acc enemies like you, I’ve learned more and enjoy the constant discussion, debating others. I’m addicted to this site! I love baseball! even if pple like you try make it their life’s purpose make this place— as hostile as possible.

Safeco’s beautiful, this news is awesome. Took a tour of the park in 2014 and I thought it had a really unique feel to it.
And to the naysayers, it’s definitely iconic to me. 1999 was the year I started really getting into baseball, so I still think of Safeco as “the cool new park with the retractable roof and the train whistle sounds”
TBJ12
Skydome opened with a retractable roof in June of 1989.
Meow Meow
So it was already old news by the time 1999 rolled around 😛
Phoenixdownyjr
Slight typo on the third paragraph
Steve Adams
Thanks! Fixed.
Michael Chaney
I think it’s pretty obvious that it’s supposed to say “lease” instead of “least” so what’s the point of mentioning it?
xabial
He didn’t specifcally mention it by name.
He just said “third paragraph” This was probably the nicest correction I’ve seen, even if the typo in question, was so minuscule most prolly missed it.
People here get crazy when typos are pointed. I’ve felt people’s wrath here before, not for being mean, but being too wordy pointing out typo Lol. Thanks again for Jeff’s professionalism when it happened and probably Steve when Phoenixdowny inevitably gets roasted for courteously pointing out. I got your back, bro!

Yawn

Must be nice to have 4 shill accounts.
Can you please stop replying to all my posts? You offer nothing but condescending remarks.
3rdStrikeLooking
Stop posting. And trust me, if you look at the downvoting, many others agree.
wiggysf
xabial is actually one of the non-idiot fans on this site. What right do you have to say that his opinion is worse than yours?
Besides the first amendment lol. Shhhh
dan-9
Because writers generally prefer not to have typos remain in their posts, and Steve clearly appreciated it. Why do you care?
Phoenixdownyjr
Why correct anything that is clearly wrong and easily fixable? Jesus you must be fun to be around man.
Goose
Did they get a waiver from the city council or are they getting hit by the head count tax as well?
lowtalker1
I always found it weird that the first game there was in 2nd month of the season
And they lost to the padres
Suntrust Park is an eye sore but at the same time turner field was built for the olympics if I recall correctly
It’s hot in Arlington in the summer and a retractable roof would be money
Dbacks and the city had a deal where the city pays its part in maintenance but they werent and that park is huge and doesn’t get sold out or close to that
I’ve been to both Texas and Seattle parks. Not bad. They are better than Chavez revine
I haven’t been to chase (I still call it bank on ballpark) it has a better ring to it but I will shortly
No interesting in going to that park in Atlanta
lowtalker1
Not interested*
Bank one ball park* I always thought they’d bank one off the wall
jleve618
Suntrust is hideous.
xabial
Never been to SunTrust, but at least it’s a cool name… Not sure if it will become iconic as Coors’…. but could be much worse name… Same with Safeco — Trust me… Yankee fan, whose favorite football team plays in a stadium called “MetLife Stadium”… Bring back Meodowlands!
jbigz12
Are you intentionally misspelling and leaving out words?
muskie73
The first game at Safeco Field was played in the fourth month of the 1999 season:

lowtalker1
Forth? I thought it was in may and they still lost to the padres
simschifan
The only 2 parks in all of baseball I would pay anything to visit is Fenway and At&t Park. But Safeco to me is pretty damn nice
muskie73
Fenway Park is a must-see but once is enough.
This Seattle fan has been been to 20-some MLB ballparks and AT&T Park remains my favorite with Safeco Field a close second. I survived the chill of AT&T Park last Friday evening.
Dogham
Safeco is one of the beat ballparks I have ever been to and is still very well maintained.
