May 3: Manager Mickey Callaway announced this morning that the MRI revealed no ligament damage in deGrom’s elbow, and he’ll attempt to make his next scheduled start on Monday (Periscope link).
May 2, 8:49pm: Manager Mickey Callaway told reporters after the game that deGrom incurred the injury while swinging in his third-inning at-bat (Twitter link via Tim Britton of The Athletic). He’s undergoing an MRI to further assess the damage.
7:48pm: Mets ace Jacob deGrom left Wednesday night’s start after four innings due to injury, which the Mets’ broadcast later revealed to be a hyperextended right elbow (via Kristie Ackert of the New York Daily News). Certainly, there’ll be additional testing performed to determine the extent of the injury and the length of any potential absence for deGrom, though the initial diagnosis of any elbow-related issue isn’t especially encouraging for the Mets.
With tonight’s four shutout innings, deGrom had dropped his ERA to a sensational 1.87 to go along with a 54-to-11 K/BB ratio in 43 1/3 innings of work to open the season. He hasn’t been scored on since an April 16 start against the Nationals and had rattled off a streak of 18 1/3 scoreless frames prior to tonight’s injury.
Suffice it to say, an absence of any length would be a major hit to the Mets, who opened the season in dominant fashion but have seen their grip on the NL East division lead fade to just a half-game entering play Wednesday. Should deGrom require a trip to the disabled list, which seems likely but won’t be formally announced until post-game or even tomorrow morning, the Mets would have Noah Syndergaard, Zack Wheeler, Jason Vargas and Steven Matz as healthy rotation pieces.
Matt Harvey was recently moved to the ’pen and could conceivably be viewed as an option to return to the rotation, though the Mets may want to see him continue to work in shorter stints and may not want to quickly change course on such a high-profile role change for the righty. Neither Seth Lugo nor Robert Gsellman is stretched out at present, having opened the season in the bullpen, though both obviously have plenty of experience starting at the MLB level. Right-handers Chris Flexen and Corey Oswalt are the team’s top two starting options on the 40-man roster in Triple-A.

Ouch!! Team history on treatment handling is not good.

Sigh. Damn.
Phillies7459
Was only a matter of time until he got hit with thn injury bug too. Hope he doesn’t need any major surgery or anything.
thecrown24
This team literally cannot catch a break it is so disheartening. Guy was pitching his balls off all year and now this!! Prayers to my mets if he misses any significant amount of time that’s what happens when you have a question mark to crap rotation after Degrom and Syndergaard.
majorflaw
“Guy was pitching his balls off . . . “
Is that as painful as it sounds? Never seen that expression used before.

Did they fire strength & conditioning coach from last year? If they did that, this proves they were the fall guys lol
Anthony2317
Strength and conditioning means nothing baseball has changed so much from little league now many kids need tommy John by 16-17 kids are playing 2-3 summer leagues 2 leagues in the fall and not to mention a travel team etc there is so much wear and tear on pitchers arms by there early 20’s it’s crazy that’s wise there has been such a major rise in arm surgery the past 10-15 years and it’s probably only gonna get worse honestly
RunDMC
DeGrom was a celebrated SS until his junior college season at Stetson when he converted to pitching full time. Sure, he had mileage on his arm, but it’s not as much as someone that’s been pitching since amateur leagues.
mikeyank55
True—except he has previously had surgeries for past mileage.
driftcat28 2
Almost traded for deGrom in fantasy the other day but was turned down. Guess I dodged a bullet

Thank God…..I will sleep so much better tonight knowing this.

“Return of the Dark Knight”……..
24TheKid
But will the Dark Knight Rise this time?
hojostache
Do you have a time machines…bc that is the only way the Dark Knight will return.
TradeAcuna
Freeman did the same thing earlier this season and returned quickly. A pitcher and the extent of the injury might be different here.
Armaday
My guess is he misses 4-6 weeks and Lugo takes his spot in the rotation.
callingoutdummies247
Did you read the article? Lugo isn’t stretched
Chewbacca
read the article? you’re asking a lot of people these days.
davidcoonce74
Dang. Hurt swinging the bat. I don’t know what is more fun – watching a pitcher try to hit or watching a pitcher get hurt trying to hit.
xabial
Watching a pitcher try to hit isn’t fun..— unless you’re Ohtani— and he’s a DH. It’s an automatic out, and Even the best pitchers hit .220?
NL fans call mediocrity of hitting “strategy”
realgone2
How snobby of you.
xabial
Sorry, realgone2. I know it’s probably one of the most — if not most polarizing topics in sports. I just fail to see the “fun” of watching pitchers bat, is worth it, especially since he made this comment about a Star pitcher who hurt himself during an AB.
I like david! I enjoy reading his posts. I just wanted him to elaborate on the “fun” aspect of it. I want to understand it from NL fan perspective. all due respect, david! Sorry if came off snobbish You’re 1 of few guys I don’t want to hate me lol^
xabial
edit: Not made comment “about” a star pitcher who got hurt during an AB.
I meant to say made his comment during* NOT about. Sorry!

Wow. A down vote festival.
PopeMarley
More like a revolution.
hojostache
Bartolo. Colon. That’s all the reason you need as to why pitchers should bat. That said (jokingly)….I think it is finally time to institute the DH in the NL, as the advantage to the AL is unfair and 98% of pitchers suck at hitting.
davidcoonce74
No worries! I agree with you. Hitting is a non-selected skill for pitchers, in the sense that not even NL teams let pitchers bat much in the minors, and the “strategy” of the double-switch is wildly overrated (and teams don’t even really do it much anymore with 3-man benches anyway).. Watching a bunt everyone in the stadium and watching on TV know is coming isn’t strategy.
thesheriffisnear
I don’t enjoy watching pitchers hit, but do enjoy the managerial aspect of pitchers hitting. Double switches, when to pinch hit, Jon Lester safety squeeze bunts. Managing an NL team requires way more strategy than an AL team, period.
PhanaticDuck26
agreed, 100%…don’t think anyone can really argue with you on that point.
…but at the expense of guys’ health? is it still worth having NL rules if your Ace arm misses significant time swinging the bat or running the bases?
I love the NL rules too, man, but there is going to be a tipping point in which the NL eventually accepts the DH, whether we agree with it or not. The conversation that will fuel that change will be centered on what just happened to deGrom today.
Similar to Posey’s broken leg and the subsequent change to the slide/protection at home rule, which totally sucks for baseball purists but changes to prevent injuries will always put the commish in the “good guy” category when considering his legacy. The DH conversation will be very similar, I think.
xabial
He injured himself swinging? Pitchers have hurt themselves landing awkwardly on those raised bases. In some cases, essentially ended their careers See: Chien Ming Wang, but I guess even he wasn’t big enough to start DH to NL talk.
jorge78
That’s why NL needs DH. Pitchers don’t need to be exposed to more injury risk.
Running the bases isn’t safe either…..
hojostache
…as long as Chase Utley is still playing.
Cat Mando
“NL fans call mediocrity of hitting “strategy”. There is a flipside to that xabial. AL fans can guys who only have one skill ballplayers.
As an NL fan, and the s0trategy argument aside, my reason for despising the DH is it gives teams a workaround. Instead of having to play the game, the “whole” game of throwing, fielding, running and hitting AL teams can plug a guy in who only hits. Who cares if he can do anything else….just hit. the ball.
For decades there have been position players who are glove first, guys who would lose a race to a turtle walking backwards and others who swing a mean stick but when it comes to fielding their arms seem to stop at the wrist….and the still played…played every aspect of the game.
I know rules change, A ball bouncing over the fence is no longer a home run and a ball that clears the fence in fair territory but lands foul is no longer a foul ball and you will never see a 490ft CF fence like old Yankee Stadium originally had. Some rules change for good…other bad….DH is the latter.
PhilliesBob1980
Freak injury. I understand that he could have done this pitching but he shouldn’t be hitting. Eliminate one way for them to get hurt.
Cubbie75
I would be in a favor of a rotating DH. I.e. you can’t have the same DH every day. Everyone must play defense occasionally, you don’t have one player whose only job is to hit for the pitcher.
redsfan48
That would eliminate literally the only positive impact of the DH (extending the careers of players who can no longer play defense effectively)
chound
Great news!
stevewpants
Longtime Brewer and Astro fans have a unique take on the DH because we have watched (if one is old enough) our teams play both styles of baseball for long periods of time. Management strategy in the NL is far more interesting than the AL because of all the switches and creativity of the manager and versatility of the players. It’s more of a thinking man’s league and the AL is more entertaining to the casual baseball fan because there’s more offense. Fair enough. As a Brewer fan I watched our best pitcher severely injure himself on a slide back into first base last season and I still don’t want the DH in the NL. However, the DH will eventually come to the NL, its only a matter of time whether we like it or not. The sad part is this, that lifelong fans of the game who love it for what it is have to watch it mutate into something different in an attempt to get casual fans more interested in the game. Changing the product to appease people who only kinda like baseball is tough to watch for people who are old fashioned about the game, and I count myself among them.
ernestofigueroa87
Casual fans still won’t care.
thecrown24
Thank the Lord Mets dodged a huge bullet. I personally think they should skip his next start just to be sure and get him a little more rest.
driftcat28 2
I agree he should skip a start. But the Mets will do Met things I suppose
thecrown24
Agreed man. I don’t even know how this should be debatable Within the Mets Organization. I think it would have gone down as a given he should, at the very least be skipped one start.
Ryan Barnes
The Mets probably need to shut him down for those starts. I remember when Thor rushed back and the Mets let him and it cost him his season. Probably just best to let him rest up a bit.
mikeyank55
Too bad Ryan that the guy that agreed with you, weak Sandy was overruled by Wilpon Jr. He told him in tue clubhouse, “Too bad. We need fannie’s in the seats. Pitch deGrom on normal rest. There are times that revenue overrules common sense.”
Pax vobiscum
I believe I saw the entire Mets rotation disintegrating in the background of Infinity War. Yup.
Cat Mando
Dang it!!!! Start with “Spoiler Alert” next time.

those who haven’t seen it probably wouldn’t have gotten the reference
maddo79
Funny reading these comments…Long time Mets fans recall and cringe remembering Pat Zachery breaking his toe kicking the water-cooler, Cone breaking his finger while bunting and missing 2 months of ‘87 season, Ojeda with the hedge trimmer in ‘88 right before the playoffs, Pedro slipping in the shower and tearing calf muscle before the ‘06 playoffs, Duaner Sanchez blowing out his shoulder in a taxi cab accident while getting Dominican food at 1:30am in Miami…not to mention Thor, Harvey and Matz recently, Generation K all going down in the late 90s..Jeez…have we ever had any good luck with out pitchers? Let’s bubble wrap them all !
Let’s skip Jake on next turn…no rush Mets fans, Sandy, or Mickey…ounce of prevention is worth a few tons of cure !
mikeyank55
With a cheap owner you have zero chance maddo.they will throw him out as soon as they can and don’t care if they risk injury. Jeff was quoted this afternoon on SNY, “We are paying these guys a ton of money. All they did was cruise last year. Is it too much to ask them to tough it out”?
braves25
I truly am glad to hear deGrom is ok!
This has been an exciting 1st month of baseball for the NL East! Atl, NY, and Phil have all been playing well. The Nats are starting to string together some wins as well. This could be a very fun year for the NL East and I would hate for any of those 4 teams to fall off due to a major injury. So thankfully deGrom was able to avoid such a disaster.
thecrown24
Agreed man I am assuming you are a Braves fan with your name and myself being a die hard mets fan I am super scary of the all star caliber young talent in Albies and Acuna position wise and the Pitching you guys have in your minors is scary good Loved seeing that kid Soroka pitch the other night against the mets. That kids got great stuff!!! I think Harper gets locked up by the nats but god if the Braves make a huge play for machado and sign him this off season and you guys move Swanson to third that would have to be the best infield in all of baseball! Braves will be the Favorites in the NL east in the near future and for many years to come with all that talent!!!
braves25
Yes the Braves did stock pile some very good young talent. It has been a rough few years….and as horribly as things end in ATL for Wren and then Coppy, they both combined to set ATL up for many years.
I am trying not to get too excited about this year :)…that is hard though!! I wish for meaningful games in September. If we miss the playoffs, then we miss them. We are still super young. I just want to be in the mix come Sept.
mikeyank55
*According to mets management, which is notoriously optimistic beyond realty. Just sayin.
mikeyank55
Sorry “25”…the dream season has ended and the good news is that there will be a two team race. The Mets front office will be covering their assess, NOT doing their best.
braves25
Hopefully for me the Braves are one of those 2 haha!!
