Some items from around baseball in the latest notes collection from FanRag Sports’ Jon Heyman…
- The Nationals were linked to Jake Arrieta during the offseason, and Heyman reports that the team was interested in signing the righty to a contract similar to the three-year, $75MM deal Arrieta eventually got from the Phillies. No offer was officially made, however, while GM Mike Rizzo had interest in adding Arrieta, ownership declined to make another big investment in a starting pitcher. With Arrieta pitching well and the Phillies ahead of the Nats in the NL East standings, this non-signing could be an interesting what-if scenario for the future, though Washington’s rotation is already one of the best in baseball.
- Speaking of winter what-ifs, Heyman adds the Mariners, Braves, and Dodgers to the list of teams that had interest in signing Lorenzo Cain before the center fielder inked a deal with the Brewers. Seattle had a clear need for center field help prior to the Dee Gordon trade, though the other two wouldn’t seem to be obvious fits on paper for Cain’s services. The Braves already have Ender Inciarte in center, plus they needed to trade Matt Kemp to make room for Ronald Acuna’s eventual promotion; potentially, Cain could’ve been a fit if Atlanta had managed to trade Nick Markakis (and then convince Cain to shift to right field). For the Dodgers, signing Cain would have run counter to their plan of getting under the luxury tax threshold, plus L.A. would’ve had to give up two draft picks and $1MM in international bonus pool funds as compensation for signing Cain. It’s also possible, of course, that both the Braves and Dodgers merely had a due diligence-type of interest in Cain given that his free agent stint stretched into late January.
- Khris Davis and the Athletics were in talks about a one-year extension to cover Davis’ final season of arbitration eligibility, though Heyman reports that Davis declined an offer from the team. It isn’t known whether negotiations are ongoing or if the two sides will table the issue. Davis has a .235/.307/.497 slash line and 13 homers through his first 205 PA, so he is on pace to earn another big raise from his current $10.5MM salary in his last arb year.
- The Mets aren’t for sale, though “folks around the league believe” that Rays owner and New York native Stuart Sternberg would try to buy the the Mets if they were available. Needless to say, the Mets would be a highly sought-after property if the Wilpon family did decide to sell — one would imagine the sale price of a team in the gigantic NYC media market would easily surpass the $2 billion mark. Heyman writes that there is even some speculation Sternberg would try to move the Rays to New York or Montreal if the league allowed it, though obviously the Mets and Yankees would have something to say about the former option in terms of territorial-rights issues. Sternberg’s relative lack of ties to his own team’s area (“he isn’t often in Tampa“) could also be an obstacle in the Rays’ longstanding desire for a new stadium.
- The Reds have been playing better under Jim Riggleman, but if the team does still want to make a long-term change in the dugout, Heyman hears that the team isn’t going to be spending big on a managerial salary. A new skipper will almost certainly make less than Dusty Baker’s $3.5MM annual salary when he was running the team. This could rule out a star hire like Joe Girardi, who impressed Reds ownership when he interviewed for the job prior to Baker’s hiring. Interestingly, Heyman believes that Girardi — an Illinois native — could be a candidate if the White Sox decided to make a managerial change, though there isn’t any indication that the Sox are considering moving on from Rick Renteria. That scenario would have a strong echo of Renteria’s last managerial job, when he stewarded the Cubs through some rebuilding years before being replaced by another star manager in Joe Maddon.
- The Royals had some interest “awhile back” in a reunion with Blue Jays DH Kendrys Morales, though that trade possibility has evaporated since both the Royals and Morales are badly struggling. K.C. is looking like a deadline seller, while Morales is hitting so poorly (.163/.248/.279 through 117 PA) that the Jays may have to release him or eat all of the approximately $19.76MM left on his contract through the 2019 campaign.

I know it’s early, but I’m glad to see Arrieta pitching well. That was such a good deal that Philly got. Even if they overpaid on the AAV, the short three years makes it very worthwhile.
jdgoat
Also nice to see the Wilpons possibly on the way out. Hopefully they can get an owner who treats the Mets like a New York team
agentx
Curious whether JDGoat’s two down votes as of this post are from commenters who support the Wilpons and think they’re actually running the Mets operation like a big-city ownership team should.
Cam
Curious why people care about downvotes.

Curious as to where you’re seeing a place to vote on these comments. There isn’t any on the iPhone app.

It’s called a computer. It’s what we old people used before smart phones.

The Arrieta contract seems like such a good deal compared to past deal of guys well into their 30’s getting 5+ year 100+ deals, but in reality it’s as reasonable, logical and fair as can be.
I think it’s part of the new normal going forward and should be judge against that and not the former.

Clayton Kershaw says your wrong
tharrie0820
Kershaw is getting pretty injury prone in his old age
kidaplus
Lance Lynn and Alex Cobb say I’m not.
Kershaw is an all-time great Seaver level 1st ballot guy who will just be signing a restructured extension with his team.
Arrieta had an all-time 18 months out of 8 years which he was nowhere before or several years since.
Lynn & Cobb are much more legit comps.
Of course if healthy guys like Sale & Degrom who have been true aces every year will get the 5+ 100+ deals at 32… but guys who don’t have their kind of elite stuff won’t for the most part.
stansfield123
It’s gonna suck watching the Yankees go up against a Girardi managed team. Hopefully he ends up in the NL.
Russianblue
It’s not what you want.

I can’t see the Blue Jays eating all of Morales’ $19.76 million contract. That isn’t something that their ownership has been willing to do in the past. Between Morales & Tulowitski, the Jays have two of the worst contracts in baseball
its_happening
Add Martin to your list.
jimmertee
Eric, u can add Martin and Pearce’s contracts to that list. The Martin/Tulo contracts are the cost of the run AA took and I am okay with that, but pearce and Morales contracts are ineptitude personified in the Jays Mgmt team decisions. Time to fire Atkins at least, maybe TInnish too.
And hire a president of baseball operations and transfer all player making decisions away from Shaprio.
its_happening
Tinnish is a know-nothing. He was never qualified to be a high end executive in baseball. He’s been part of some atrocious deals and bad scouting. Jays should have let him walk to Atlanta with Anthopoulos. He’s kept his job because he knows how to kiss the right behinds…
tharrie0820
? Jays didn’t let AA walk to the Braves, he was with the dodgers before he came to the Braves
its_happening
Tinnish, not AA. Braves hired him, inside a week he resigned and returned to the Jays. Sorry, should have said “to join Anthopoulos” rather than “with Anthopoulos”.
jdgoat
Pearce? Really? He’s a league average player getting paid league average money. To say it’s one of the worst in the league is ridiculous. And to say they should be fired is ridiculous. They were left in a bad position by AA and have given out one awful deal and made one bad trade.
its_happening
12.5 for 2 years to an injury-prone platoon player who’s AWFUL defensively was a bad deal. Wouldn’t say the worst but it was a bad signing. Add to the fact you had just signed Morales didn’t help.
jdgoat
It’s really not a bad deal. Its just what a player like him is worth. You can argue that the second year was unneeded, but 6.25 million doesn’t get you much. If the Jays didn’t give him that, someone else would’ve. But I think the poster above though is just complaining for the sake of complaining though.
its_happening
Someone else should have. Pearce deal was bad because the Jays had already signed Morales. Paying two DH’s at $6.25 and $10 (Morales in 2017) wasn’t smart. Pearce contract would have been tolerable without the Morales signing. That’s what made the Pearce signing bad.
lanceuppercut
Pearce was mainly signed to play 1B and a bit of LF/2B it just so happened that Smoak had a monster year and was healthy all season. It wasn’t a great deal but it made sense at the time.
its_happening
He never played 2B. If the Jays thought he could play 2B he would have while Travis was on the DL.
agentx
Don’t have a dog in this fight but admit two years of Pearce was a little puzzling albeit not all that expensive.
Your best shot getting any relief there may depend on convincing DiPoto that Pearce can play 5-6 innings of passable 2B a few times per week between now and Xano’s return.
Tulo’s contract will obviously be much more difficult to unload.
its_happening
Pearce hasn’t played 2B in a few years. He’s had open chances to play there in Toronto and hasn’t because:
A) He can’t play 2B
B) He can’t field period
C) He has no range
It’s more likely to see Anthony Rizzo play 2B in Chicago than Pearce playing 2B for anyone. Not sure why people seem to think Pearce has hidden skill at 2B. Devon Travis’ injury couldn’t get Pearce to play that position. Ever.

1. There was no reason that the Nationals should have given Arrieta the same contract that the Phillies did, so good thing they didn’t. With the financial problems that the Nationals seem to have (all the deferred payments they offer in big contracts and the MASN dispute with the Orioles), it would make no sense to double down by spending big money on something that’s already a strength of the team — especially when considering the money they already have invested in it.
2. I’m not a Rays fan so I’m not as knowledgeable about this, but if Stuart Sternberg is rich enough to have interest in buying the Mets, how is he unable to sustain a remotely competitive payroll for the Rays? I know they don’t draw a ton of fans and revenue probably isn’t great, so is he just unwilling to risk losing money?
tharrie0820
If fans would actually show up to the games, I’m sure he’d be more than happy to invest some more money into the team. With the attendance problems, even when they were winning, it’s a horrible investment

“Rays owner and New York native Stuart Sternberg”
Sternberg could rename the Rays as the New York Arbitrageurs – immediately called the ARBS – and license Michael Douglas’s portrait as Gordon Gecko for their logo.
ThePriceWasRight
kc might still want Morales. their pen is awful and he likely would be an upgrade with how he looked today
its_happening
Jays should start with asking for Ian Kennedy to fill out 2019-20 rotation during the rebuild. KC will most likely ask for more.
jdgoat
Here’s my probably biased proposal.
Kendrys Morales, TJ Zeuch, Ryan Borucki, Richard Urena, and maybe around 10 million in salary for Danny Duffy.
Kansas gets a cheaper Morales who played decent for them, two good pitching prospects, and an alright MLB ready middle infielder who could be something of value.
Toronto gets a high upside arm who has struggled tremendously this year and might potentially also have a bad contract.
ThePriceWasRight
not sure this makes sense for the royal to take on contract. as for Duffy I believe he will get shelled pitching in the AL east
its_happening
That proposal would make less sense for Toronto.

A Heyman article that doesn’t revisit the negotiations around a high visibility Scott Boras-repped Free Agent might be nice….

Though Portland and Montreal are great sites for future teams, I’d love to see Brooklyn have a team again. Brooklyn would be the 2nd largest city in US if apart from NYC. It’s he’ll trying to go north to either NYY or NYM games and it’d be great to see the nostalgia of baseball back in Brooklyn – though I’d think there would be more support in the other cities admittedly. I know NYY/NYM would adamantly oppose because it’d threaten the hold in their market, but with how the city continues to go, the money and interest would be there in the years to come.
its_happening
Montreal should never have another MLB team. Ever.
Michael Chaney
Why shouldn’t they?
its_happening
You can see my response below, but if there is another Canadian city more deserving of a baseball franchise it would be Vancouver and not Montreal.
ThePriceWasRight
sour jays fan?
its_happening
Nope. A second Canadian team would be great to watch on TV. More baseball and more exposure for all fans across the country.
However…
Montreal couldn’t break a million fans over 81 games the last bunch of years (except 1, thanks to Puerto Rico games), and they have a stadium with a subway running beneath the field. Albeit, stadium is awful and unsafe. They averaged under 8,000 fans one season. Embarrassing.
City of Montreal does not have much room for a brand new stadium. They are also extremely fiscally irresponsible as a city and a province.
The spring games Toronto played were filled with fans from Ontario taking a road trip to Montreal. Less people attended the spring games when they were scheduled during the week. No coincidence. It would be a mistake to move a team to a city drawing less than Tampa Bay.
jimmertee
I’d like to see Montreal have another MLB team but ONLY if it is located downtown. For a decade I made a road trip to the Big-O once a year and watched a weekend full of Expos games. Most of the time there were 5-7 k fans there.
Stadium was an albatross in a poor location.
They would be successful in a downtown location.
its_happening
Gonna be very hard to find space in that city Jimmer. Plus infrastructure to accommodate. It was a nice little roadie up to Montreal with a stop for smoked meat sandwiches.
Can’t excuse the fans for not at least breaking a million per year. They had a better transit system to the park than Toronto. For people pointing out how bad Tampa’s attendance is seem to forget how bad it was in Montreal.
norcalblue
Heyman, as usual, is just making things up when it comes to LAD having serious interest in Cain. There is NO WAY this FO would ever pay the price in dough and draft picks that it would have taken to acquire Cain.
twentyforty
Cain is in Milwaukee because they were the only team dumb enough to give him five years.
bigredsfan41017
Reds ownership needs to quit going cheap and spend money on players and a respected manager to get fans back in the ballpark! Fans will not spend a lot of money to see a losing team! Attendance is way down compared to last year!
BrandonGregory74
Who do the Reds go after? They have John Farrell in-house but does he want the stress for average pay?
garrog1949
BRAVES should trade for Moustakas and Herrera,Staumont Soler before deadline by sending Pederson,Fried,Weigel,B.Wilson and Demeritte.
RunDMC
Why would KC trade all those pieces together, and why would they trade Soler if they are admittedly rebuilding? He’s their #3 hitter. Quite honestly, I’d rather make a run at an upgrade at corner OF (or even possibly re-sign Kakes on a short-term deal) than trade away depth pieces with question marks with upside.
I can’t believe I even entertained the thought that this trade could happen, because it can’t and won’t. If we’re trading Fried/Wilson, etc. – it needs to be for more controllable assets than the rentals of Moose/Herrera.
realgone2
That’s awful
ASapsFables
Actually Rick Renteria stewarded the Cubs through one rebuilding year in 2014 before being replaced by star ego-maniac micro-manager Joe Maddon in 2015. Thankfully, Renteria is not leaving the South Side anytime soon with a loyal front office and an even more loyal owner in Jerry Reinsdorf who couldn’t even find a way to fire the inept Robin Ventura.
As a fan of both teams I would welcome Joe Girardi on the North Side to replace the overrated goof there which would also be the ex-Cub and Northwestern grads preference anyway.
Adolpho67
What a sad take on Maddon. As a life-long Cub fan, I’ll take any “goof” who can deliver the most regular season wins, most playoff wins, and a World Series over 3+ yrs at the helm!!
Wake up! How can you say you’re a fan? Do you not like winning??
Priggs89
And how many of those wins were because of Joe Maddon? Do you think they would be worse with Girardi managing?
therealryan
I know it would never happen but as a Rays fan I could only hope for Maddon to be run out of Chicago and find his way back to the Rays.
