Please spare me any promotion of Draftkings, who are a blight on sports, disguised as a regular news entry. This is a terrible way to operate. Sure, your site needs sponsors and advertisers, but keep them in the ad wells.
Tim Dierkes
Just repeating from the post: This is a sponsored post from DraftKings.

I’m in..Just curious Tim – are you or any of your crew entering? I’m not doing well so far this year but coming ahead of one of you guys would ease some of my disappointment thus far lol.
Tim Dierkes
Not sure about the rest of the team, but I am not entering. I generally prefer rotisserie style fantasy baseball keeper leagues and have pared that down to two this year.
adamontheshore
Tim, one thing about how your adverts work. Are they based on simple advertising space, clicks, or clicks plus purchase? I frequently see ads for Nespresso, ThriftBooks, and other places I frequently shop. If I click and purchase via MLBTR does that benefit you? I’m gonna buy the stuff anyway, so I figured I would ask, and I would be glad to support you guy’s in any way I could (anyway as in the I’m gonna buy this stuff anyway way :)).
Jeff Todd
I have no earthly idea, but wanted to say thanks for asking. I’ll see if Tim wants to poke his head back into the comments here, too.

Odd, imagine what your life could be like if you didn’t let such little things bother you.

“Draftkings, who are a blight on sports . . .”
Agreed.
Just to save an extra comment.
“This is a sponsored post from DraftKings.”
Would you accept advertising from anybody? That’s a serious question, Tim. Would you accept an ad or “sponsored post” from a legal cannabis merchant in CA? How about an ad from a legal arms merchant or a payday lender? Do you draw a line somewhere or is all money green to you? These people are making bank by encouraging gambling on baseball. Bad call.
Tim Dierkes
No, I would not accept advertising from anybody. Obviously I’m fine with DraftKings. I guess on any ad-supported website the reader has to make an assessment of whether the ads offend them enough to make them stop visiting.
riffraff
Honestly Tim I cannot think of any ad other than endorsing either political party that would cause any kind of dramatic downturn in web traffic. Mostly because of the fantastic service you provide but also I think a lot of it is just people who like to complain to make themselves heard… which is totally acceptable as well.. but you probably already noticed that the frequent complainers are still visiting the site..to complain lol. On a side note – will you announce the winner or just them gloat in private
Rwm102600
I’m glad this was posted. I joined it because of this post. Thank you for advertising it. Ignore the complaints from people who would rather spend 5 minutes complaining and arguing instead of the 2 seconds to scroll down.
Adam6710
Your comment = bad call. You sound awfully judgmental. Glass houses.
tylerall5
You literally can just scroll past this post. It’s not like it forces you to click on it.

Even the NBA has started to accept this “blood money” and a bill might soon pass making it legal. (Still waiting on the Supreme Court Verdict)
It dumbfounds me how people can hate this. If they want to, they’ll still go to AC, and gamble away everything. MLBTR getting advertisements from DraftKings changes nothing. Good for them, making money. It’s not like the ads NFSW inappropr. Then you might have point complaining about specific ads.

Not to be picky but your link refers to sports betting which is a different ( although i can see where one would consider it similar) from what draftkings does. Sports betting is team outcome based, or occasionally player outcome based whereas fantasy sports is a competition against other players based on in game statistics. The argument against sports betting is much stronger than against fantasy gambling ,
davidcoonce74
You pay literally nothing to see the news and information presented here. Get over it or just move along. I don’t do fantasy sports either, but I know advertising makes this site happen and I just keep scrolling.
bastros88
the Reds already lost
Dotnet22
Too soon.

What’s wrong with DraftKings? I made a lot of money today just picking a bunch of Rocky hitters. I say put your money with your mouths are. So many comments on this site from foolish people.
cowman707
Rockies didn’t play today, you are the foolish person here.
cowman707
nevermind, post was from yesterday I’m the foolish person here!
adamontheshore
It’s nice that, at the very least, you admit your error and recognize your foolishness in this case. Credit where credit is due.
astrosfan
I also do agree. Good for you.

I don’t really care who the ad is from, but I don’t like this new presentation where an ad is being presented in the same space as the news stories. I don’t recall that ever happening before. I could just see that turning into having to sort through ads to find the actual good content. But hopefully it won’t get anything close to that and just be a once in a while thing we can ignore if we so choose.
Jeff Todd
Just fwiw, we have utilized this approach before, for quite some time actually. But it is relatively rare for a sponsored post to go up (which is probably why you have happened not to notice them previously).
In my honest opinion — as a former reader and now an employee for quite some time — Tim has established a pretty compelling track record of focusing on the reader experience first and foremost.
phantomofdb
It’s also possible that it’s far more noticeable on the mobile version than on the desktop. I usually use a desktop but was on the mobile site today and it struck me as odd.
Either way, as long as that type of rare ad doesn’t interfere with the user experience I’ve got no issue with it
Badfinger
Waaaaah. There’s an ad on a free site. Waaaaah.
