Free-agent right-hander Jake Peavy was reportedly going to throw in a scouting showcase around May 1, but that hasn’t happened yet, the soon-to-be 37-year-old tells Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe. Nevertheless, Peavy is still aiming to return to the majors, where he last pitched in 2016 with the Giants. “In the next three weeks I’ll make a decision,” said Peavy, who added that he wanted to consult with his four kids before attempting a comeback. Continued Peavy: “I feel that I can help a team in the second half. My arm feels great. I’ve had a chance to rest it so I feel as strong as I’ve felt in a long time. I’ve kept in shape. I throw bullpens. So I’m hoping that once I make the decision to do it, that the interest will be there.” Notably, the onetime NL Cy Young Award winner realizes he’d “have to sign an incentive-based deal” and work his way back to MLB via the minors.
Here’s more from Cafardo:
- First baseman Jose Abreu is “likely” to be the next player the White Sox trade, Cafardo writes. Even though the White Sox are rebuilding, they’ve continued to hold on to the 31-year-old Abreu, in part because he has emerged as a key mentor to their young players. Abreu would figure to garner interest from contenders, though, considering he’s having another big offensive season (.294/.366/.518 with eight HRs in 183 plate appearances) and under wraps through 2019.
- “There’s a growing feeling among talent evaluators” that the Braves will go after Royals third baseman Mike Moustakas in advance of the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline, according to Cafardo. That may have become even more likely Sunday when the Braves ended their brief Jose Bautista experiment, though they’re bent on giving Johan Camargo a serious look at third base for the time being. Regardless, Moustakas does seem like a strong bet to finish the season outside of Kansas City, which is rebuilding and doesn’t have him under contract beyond this season (there is a $15MM mutual option, however). Moustakas is making a very reasonable salary ($5.5MM) and enjoying a terrific year at the plate, having slashed .294/.333/.528 with 10 long balls in 195 PAs.
- The Marlins expect reliever Kyle Barraclough to generate interest prior to the deadline, Cafardo reports. The 27-year-old is amid his fourth straight high-strikeout/high-walk/low-ERA season, with 11.32 K/9, 5.23 BB/9 and a 1.74 ERA through 20 2/3 innings. Adding to his appeal, Barraclough’s under control through 2021 and making just over $1.1MM this season.
- The Rangers had interest in Red Sox utilityman Blake Swihart as recently as a week ago, per Cafardo, who notes “that avenue may still be available.” A catcher by trade, Swihart’s out of options and doesn’t seem to have a place on this year’s Red Sox, which led his agent to request a trade earlier this week. Still, Boston’s unsure about parting with the 26-year-old, Cafardo suggests. If the Sox do explore a deal, though, there are other fits besides Texas, as MLBTR’s Steve Adams pointed out Wednesday.
- More on the Red Sox, who’d “likely want bullpen help and/or a prospect” in a trade for center fielder Jackie Bradley Jr., Cafardo observes. Boston spurned teams’ interest in Bradley in the offseason and has since gotten off to one of the majors’ best starts, though the 28-year-old hasn’t contributed to that as much as expected. Bradley has posted an ugly .165/.267/.252 line in 146 trips to the plate, leading Alex Speier of the Boston Globe to wonder if the Red Sox could consider demoting him despite his $6.1MM salary when second baseman Dustin Pedroia comes off the disabled list soon. While it’s a long shot, Speier concedes, a Bradley-less Red Sox team would still feature the enviable outfield trio of Mookie Betts in right, Andrew Benintendi in center and J.D. Martinez in left.

JBJ has very limited value.
bobcavic
He’s quickly become a Fourth Outfielder with speed.
jdodge22
Not all that much speed
bravesfan
Would like the braves to go after barraclough before going after MM. trade deadline is key for the braves to wait before making a deal. And don’t buy high. Honestly, Riley could be ready by then. Might not, but we should have a better feeling for the teams future at that point
RunDMC
Same feeling on Bearclaw. With the high price of RPs, he’s proven at mid-relief and some closing. Would be a great piece to add with insurance if Minter doesn’t become the closer and we don’t reunite with Kimbrel. Everyone beats the Viz.
inkstainedscribe
Agree the Braves should wait ’til the deadline. Riley may *not* be ready by then, so the commitment to Moose wouldn’t be onerous.
Unless, of course, the Braves pick up Headley well before that and he’s a better option than Camargo.
baseballfanforever
Why is Headly a better option than Camargo ? Camargo has a higher OPS than Headly and I’m sure better defense too since Camargo is still young and also plays SS.
GarryHarris
Johan Camargo will someday hit consistently. He is versatile defensively and can also run. I’d love to see the Tigers have him.
tealmarlin
Nobody wants Prado, Ziegler or Tazawa?
RunDMC
Moose is a better option and you don’t have to take on salary and deal with Jeter. Its telling he isn’t in an ATL uniform with that history and Braves need at 3B.

ASapsFables
I’d be willing to place a substantial bet that Jose Abreu will not be the next White Sox player traded and not just because I personally hope he remains part of the White Sox core with a contract extension.
The odds would be in my favor anyway with so many other veterans that figure to be available this summer who have less chance of becoming future core pieces. That would include a few veteran relievers like southpaw Luis Avilan and right-handers such as Bruce Rondon and Joakim Soria to say nothing of controllable Nate Jones. Hector Santiago is another southpaw who could fill a role in the pen or rotation for some contender by July 31st. And then there is James Shields who has been been pitching much better of late with his new delivery and only a few month left on a contract that is already being mostly paid by his previous employer in San Diego.
The White Sox also have a few potential pieces among their position players including highly versatile infielder Yolmer Sanchez who also comes with multiple years of control. Sanchez is substantially more valuable than Tyler Saladino ever was and the latter was already dealt a month ago to the Brewers for cash and a bag of baseballs. Leury Garcia is another veteran who can play the infield and outfield and might be a solid addition to some contender who seeks some versatility off their bench.
The White Sox also have some catching depth with a potential starter available in Wellington Castillo as well as two reserves with MLB experience in backup Omar Narvaez and Kevan Smith at AAA. Clearly the White Sox can’t move all of them with a need on their own roster but they could deal one of that group. Finally, if Avisail Garcia can return from the DL soon enough he might be another option for a trade this summer.
Clearly none of the above have the value of Abreu but that wasn’t a condition for my wager. lol
minoso9
I totally want the Sox to keep Abreu. Not only is he a fine hitter and mentor for young Sox players, he is a team oriented player who wants to stay in Chicago. But he would be a very good fit in Colorado-a team with a surplus of outfielders including Blackmon. He would fill a gaping hole in CF for the Sox. The Rockies could also use a catcher and might offer pitching help to the Sox. I would like to see both teams do better.
kidaplus
Blackmon is 32 and has a 100+ mil 6 year deal… makes absolutely zero sense for the white sox rebuild timeline. Especially with 25 mil bonus they gave to Robert.
They have absolutely nothing on the books going forward. If CF isn’t filled by in house talent in 2-3 yeas, then you sign a younger FA instead of owing 20 mil a year to coors field guy at ages 36-38.
minoso9
Blackmon is 31 the same as Abreu. He is as very good hitter in any ball park, and he runs well with good defense. Dahl and Tapia also run well and could play CF. Just hypothesizing anyway, and it’s likely the Rox will keep their young outfielders.
kidaplus
Turns 32 in July and if Col trades for Abreau its cause they’re trying to win now. You’re not gonna move a 5-tool CF you just signed to an extension for a hit tool only 1b and replace with him unproven youth in that situation. I mean I love Jose and he’s a true pro hitter, but that’s just not a move anyone is gonna make. I
If they have a surplus of young OF, you move those assets for proven MLB talent that will help the big club win now. It’s textbook.
Now Jose for those guys def makes sense if you’re set on moving him. Which I’m not that keen on with Cubans Moncada, Eloy & Robert being so young and important.
minoso9
I hope Jose has his best year ever in 2018 and does not get traded. And I hope Robert can play CF some day. Rutherford and Basabe are other possibilities for the future. I’m not reading the same textbook as you however.
IronBallsMcGinty
I like Jose as much as any other Sox fan but I think they should trade him while his value is good and he’s still at a fair age. They could try for some good AAA or AA talent that could possibly contribute next season. Davidson could play first and Yolmer fits in well at third.
brucewayne
I wouldn’t mind seeing Abreau playing 1B in St. Louis for the next 3 years or so!
minoso9
His value is very good now and mainly for the Sox. Yolmer and Davidson are improving with the bat, and I don’t know if Davidson can play first but Yolmer can cover second, short or third base. Moncada may wind up at third. This is an unsettled team with many prospects and possibilities.
ASapsFables
It’s pretty much a given that if Rick Hahn discusses Jose Abreu with the Rockies the conversation will start (and pretty much end) with their #1 prospect Brendan Rodgers who could be the White Sox starter at any one of SS, 2B or 3B come 2019. Even with Tim Anderson and Yoan Moncada currently viewed as the White Sox future double play combination, acquiring Rodgers would give them the ability to consider moving Moncada to 3B, Anderson to 2B…or just let Rodgers handle the hot corner.
The White Sox may be looking at such a scenario even without a deal involving Rodgers. Many mock drafts have the White Sox selecting Oregon State 2B/SS Nick Madrigal with the overall #4 pick on June 4th. Madrigal profiles as an MLB leadoff hitter and second baseman. As an advanced college bat and potential Gold Glove at 2B who likely makes his MLB debut within two years, the White Sox would probably shift Moncada to 3B as he continues to bulk up and add more power to a body that already resembles an NFL linebacker.
ASapsFables
kidaplus-Totally agree with your assessment. We all know that Rick Hahn would want SS/2B Brendan Rodgers over any other Rockies prospect. Colorado does not have any OF’s among their top-10 list.
Btw-Eloy Jimenez is Dominican and not Cuban like Yoan Moncada and Luis Robert. Matters little since Jose Abreu will welcome his big bat alongside his own later this summer and probably be the guy who picks Jimenez up at the airport. lol
minoso9
The Chisox have a much better chance of signing Madrigal than acquiring Rodgers.
ASapsFables
I believe that point was made evident in my comment, no?
There is little chance that Jose Abreu will be traded to the Rockies because of Rick Hahn’s demands which will put a premium on intangibles that few others contenders will want to pay this summer. Which is why Abreu will most likely remain with the White Sox beyond his 2019 walk year with a contract extension this coming offseason.
User 4245925809
Was wanting Bradley moved over this last offseason, he’s been a weakness since his rookie season. Far too streaky for a contending team and hype has kept him in headlines, nothing else, along with his great glove.
Another BJ Upton talent wise, minus the bad attitude of Upton’s. Bradley will give a team 30-45 days of good performance a season and stink it up the rest. he should have been moved over one of the last 2 offseason’s for sure and it may be too late now to get anything of much value.
thegreatcerealfamine
Not even close, Upton played All Star ball for a few seasons.
Poundsy24
Do you even watch the games? JBJs glove is good enough to keep him on any roster. He’s so valuable defensively that somehow he’s a positive WAR player despite his non-existent offense. Think about that! For how TERRIBLE his offense is, his glove still makes up for it!
The Sox should the complete opposite route. They should extend him long term for cheap so that way they’ve got an affordable and consistent CF which will help them sign other players in the future.
thegreatcerealfamine
Spoken like a true Homer. If you’re saying a defensive glove can makeup for his his pathetic offense, you don’t know baseball. There are plenty of good gloves-no bat players throughout the minor league systems. Why do you think he’s been sitting so much, and they’d deal him if somebody would make an offer?
jdgoat
I disagree with that. Defense first players can stick if their glove is good enough. A prime example is Heyward. He’s obviously terribly overpaid, but he still provides plenty of value to the Cubs even though his bat is not good. Same with Simmons. Now that he’s broken out with the bat, he’s one of the most valuable players in the league. But even when he was a glove only defensive whiz, he gave the Braves a lot of value as well.
thegreatcerealfamine
I do somewhat agree. Thing is Heyward has had above average seasons wither the bat, at the same time playing above level defense. Am I wrong but wasn’t JBJ a switch hitter when he first came up.
phnxdark23
Both of those examples are multiple time gold glove winners, widely considered to be the best defenders in the league at their respective positions. Bradley is excellent defensively, but is he in a class with those two? I think you’re both ultimately a little right – it’s certainly *possible* to be an impact player on a playoff caliber team as a glove-only guy, but you pretty much have to be the best of the best or else you’re destined to be a defensive sub/bench guy.
deweybelongsinthehall
Don’t underestimate Bradley’s defense at a time when the AL East alone has more talent in CF than we’ve seen from the entire league in other years. That said, I was for trading JBJ believing his return was peaking. I did not anticipate this bad with the bat. He still has some value like to the Mets but don’t expect much in return. Might be better to see if another club soon has a need.
brucewayne
So if this is your philosophy , why are you so down on Yadir Monlina
brucewayne
Sorry! Phone service is horrible ! Molina!
User 4245925809
1st of all.. You don’t extend Boras players “for cheap” and rarely at all before they are eligible for FA, worthy or not of decent bucks.
I’m going to give you an example right now of a player on the Sox who plays a key position and really does not hit, but has an outstanding glove and was just signed to an extension covering his 1st year of FA eligibility ‘for cheap” as you describe (13m total).. Christian Vazquez.. Would 13.5m over 3 seasons do? I might be in favor of offering up Boras that, but he would slam the door and it’s really to much for a glove 1st guy in a now offensive game.
This is NOT the days of Paul Blair roaming CF for the Orioles, or Rick Miller for Boston when a team could throw offensive liabilities in the field where they expect guys to hit. Anyone remember how long it took Boston to get over the fact Wade Boggs had NO POWER, therefore couldn’t play 3rd?
The game has it’s idiosyncrasies and FO, along with coaches are slow to change their own pre set rules.
deweybelongsinthehall
Rick Miller? Can still hear Ned Martin “Miller on his horse”… He ended up learning how to hit, with no power. I bring it up because I just heard he is still playing in some type of league at age 70!
rocky7
Poundsy24…..JBJ has. a negative WAR for 2018 and over 6 seasons barely is above 10.
How is that irreplaceable when trying to compete in the AL East?
Dodgethis
The AL east is rather weak.

Bruin1012
JBJ has really looked lost at the plate this year. This has happened to him before just not at the beginning of the season and to this level. Trading JBJ at this time would be selling low and probably should not happen.
JBJ has been an extremely streaky hitter in his career and go on tremendous runs when he looks like one of the best hitters in baseball. This year feels different though pitchers just don’t respect him and are getting him out with straight fastballs. He needs to turn it around soon or who knows. The Red Sox have 1/3 if their lineup that are automatic outs but Mookie and JDM have been so good they have been able to win despite the inept bottom of the order. The Red Sox can’t carry two guys that are batting under the Mendoza line all year. They also can’t expect Mookie and JDM to hit like they have all year. Hopefully JBJ goes on one of his patented hot streaks soon.
deweybelongsinthehall
No team can normally survive with two players hitting but Moreland and Boegarts have also been hitting. Pedroia is soon to be back and both Vasquez and Leon have shown positive signs. Offense as a team can be cyclicle. Most worrisome long term for a team tied for first continues to be the overall pen.
kmk1986
I think the sox will survive without his glove and we do watch games and we watch an automatic rally killing out sorry his .160 does not trump the glove u need some offensive value
Gobbysteiner
Um, he has negative -0.2 WAR right now.
The Oregonian
JBJ to the Mariners, Gordon to 2B maybe?
Ninth 3 Year Plan
How about to,the Giants? The y desperately need some defense in CF……don’t care if he cannot hit

Donaldson makes a lot more sense for the Braves. Need a right handed bat to fit in between Freeman and Markakis, even though both hit lefties pretty well
brewcrewer
Does Donaldson command more in talent than moose though? If so, which he might be, I could see the braves wanting to hold on and roll with moose. Their build is ahead of schedule so no need to prematurely go for the big one. Again, I don’t know which one would cost more…any opinions?
Bklynbeats17
If I’m the Mets I call the Yankees for one if there surplus of outfielders.
Yankees Send: Frazier,Adams, and another mid level prospect
Mets send : DeGrom
thegreatcerealfamine
Dude I’m a Yankees fan and that’s way to one sided in favor of the Yanks.
Bklynbeats17
How. Frazier will be an every day outfielder. He has high upside. Adams is another stud in our system. Plus another mid level prospect. For a pitcher we only have two years of control. Look how we were able to pull off the Grey trade. If need be throw Fowler in. So Frazier Adams and Fowler for DeGrom
thegreatcerealfamine
For one, deGrom is a proven ace. Adams isn’t considered a #1 or even close. Frazier has lost a lot of prospect luster and it’s not for sure he’s an everyday outfielder. Fowler?-plays for the A’s. deGrom is so much better then Gray it’s not even close.
chino31
How are Mets getting Fowler when he is with the A’s????
Blue_Painted_Dreams_LA
So Gray is your comp? That’s reaching a bit that’s actually reaching a lot. And well that’s not a good enough offer.
phnxdark23
Posts like this are why Yankees fans are so reviled in chat formats, even thought there’s plenty of intelligent Yanks fans out there (Xabial comes immediately to mind). First off, none of the players – or even the teams – that you mentioned have anything to do with the article you posted under. Second, no one is giving you an ace for your AAA garbage. DeGrom is a legitimate ace by any measure – if the Mets do decide to move him, it’d be for something closer to what the Sox got for Sale. Third, you don’t consider the other teams needs at all, just whatever spare parts you have lying around in AAA regardless of fit. The Mets have Conforto, Nimmo, Bruce, Cespedes, and Lagares locked up through 2020, even if some of those are injured right now. Why would they ship off an ace for another middle-tier ceiling OF? And lastly, you don’t even know your own team, as several people have already pointed out that Fowler was traded last year to the A’s for Gray.
Steven Chinwood
He was uninformed but didn’t come across arrogant or entitled. There’s no reason to be so acidic. I don’t know who you root for, nor do I care, but all teams have homers. So don’t be the guy who generalizes about one teams fans, then appoints himself the teller.
phnxdark23
I’ll be whatever guy I feel like, thanks for the tip though. It’s absolutely arrogant and entitled to think you can get someone else’s top shelf ace – who isn’t even mentioned as being on the trade market – for scraps. Even more so when it’s on an article that has nothing to do with either team or any of the players mentioned.
z3rogs
Not that Fowler. The kid who broke his knee.
Cat Mando
z3rogs – Same Fowler. He ruptured his patella tendon as a Yankee and was traded to the A’s while rehabbing
chino31
Too one sided and no way they make a trade of that magnitude with the Yanks.
deweybelongsinthehall
Not enough for Degrom. To make an all NY trade in a year when the Yankees are trying for a WS, has to be overpay bigtime.
jdgoat
It’d probably need to be Sheffield instead of Adams and the other prospect would need to be a guy with value like Estrada, Acevedo or maybe even Abreu for the Mets to consider dealing Degrom
kidaplus
Jesus.
Go to your room, OP… you’re grounded.

As my name says, Im fan of all 3 teams. ’65 Mets ’66 Yanks ’67 Sox. Live in central Maine. Been here since ’83. ’86 was a tough year!
It’s a good hypothetical trade of DeGrom to the Yanks. Helps BOTH teams.
Yaz got me hooked on the Sox. But Mantle won my first game ever with a walk off! Anything to make for the best baseball rivalry
Ezra77
Red Sox please don’t break that outfield. Killer B’s
BravesFan80
If the Braves are thinking of going after Moose, they need to go ahead and get him. Camargo is a super-utility player, not an everyday 3B. Moose’s salary is manageable and just has the one year deal that ends after this season. He’ll keep 3B warm for Riley, who’ll be in the majors next year.
TradeAcuna
The Braves need a third baseman, they need a starting pitcher (trade Folty during the deadline), and a closer! Until then, this team will not win the WS.
phnxdark23
Agreed with the third baseman and the closer, but I’m not so sure another starter is necessary. Even if you’re not a believer in Folty, there’s enough starter depth in AAA that there’s not a reason to give up anything for a solid-to-good vet – particularly considering what good ones usually cost at the deadline. It’ll ultimately depend on who’s available I guess, but I’ll honestly be happy just to see us be aggressive at the deadline in ANY capacity for the first time in quite a while.
roberty
It would be nuts to trade Folty, He’s given up 2 or fewer earned runs in 8 of the 9 starts he’s made this season. Only 3 starters have a higher fastball velocity. Folty is exactly the kind of guy you want if you’re trying to win a world series.
Zach725
Why would they trade folty?
Lance
The Cardinals should be talking with KC about Moose…..and with the White Sox about Abreu. They have big holes at first and third.
Ninth 3 Year Plan
The cardinals best hitter is a DH playing first…..they’re not going for Abreu
Ninth 3 Year Plan
JBJ to the Giants for Sam Dyson…..make it happen
gomerhodge71
Send Bradley down and what options do the Sox have as backups in the outfield? Holt can play LF, but who’s there for CF/RF? And do you really want JDM in the field all season?
Cardinals17
Abreau would definitely fit into the Cardinals batting order nicely. Jose Martinez can be moved to right field. Dexter Fowler can play every position in the outfield as the 4th outfielder. If Fowler’s hitting and base-running keep deteriorating, the Cardinals still have O’Neal and Bader as contenders for the 4th outfielder. Bader can play every outfield position too.
steve dolan
If the Red Sox sent Jackie Bradley down, Benintendi would remain in CF, and yes, JD Martinez should play left regularly. (When JD is at DH his average this year is .286. When he plays the field, he’s averaging .400.)
Not only Holt could serve as outfield backup, but I’d love to see Swihart get some playing time; and Sam Travis is currently in serious outfield training in the minors.
On another note, I think Holt, when not in the outfield as a backup, should platoon with Hanley Ramirez as DH. Need to reduce Ramirez’ plate appearances significantly to avoid his $22 million vesting option.
senortaco
As a White Sox fan, I read Abreu being traded written in the same article as JBJ potentially being on the move as well and got scared. Glad the whole Hahn loves JBJ and let’s structure a trade between the teams as JBJ as the centerpiece narrative never played out. Dodged a major bullet with that one.
angelsfan4life
The Angels need Moose. Kept saying that last season and all of the offseason. The Angels need a power hitter from the left side of the plate.

As a marlins fan, I still dont understand why they didnt trade Marmol in the offseason. Hopefully this report means they’ll finally do that in the next month or so
