The Braves have placed young righty Mike Soroka on the 10-day DL with a right shoulder strain, per a club announcement. The placement is retroactive to May 14th. His scheduled start tonight will instead be taken by Max Fried, who has been recalled.
That’s not the news the Braves were hoping for with a prized young hurler, though perhaps the team is just exercising precaution. MLB.com’s Mark Bowman tweets that the club believes he could be able to return in time to make his next scheduled start, which would presumably mean coming off of the DL after the minimum absence.
Soroka, one of the Atlanta roster’s slate of fascinating twenty-year-old talents, has impressed through three MLB starts. He carries a 3.68 ERA in 14 2/3 innings, with underlying peripherals (9.2 K/9, 2.5 BB/9, 42.9% groundball rate) that suggest he’s more than ready for the majors. Though it was not certain when he came up whether he’d stick, it now seems reasonable to anticipate he’ll be in the majors to stay so long as he remains healthy.
For the time being, though, it’ll be Fried who gets the chance. The 24-year-old has made four relief appearances on the year in the majors but also took three starts at Triple-A. At his best, Fried can generate grounders and strikeouts in much the same manner Soroka has, though the southpaw has long handed out too many free passes and is not considered as promising as the man he’ll substitute for.

Should strain a lot better new than the dreaded forearm strain

Better believe when I first saw the headline I was starting to hit the panic button. We definitely need him. Strain shoulder prob explains why he struggled a little more the last two outing vs his 1st start and minor league starts
jdcam1
Lol or maybe he just struggled after his first start/outside the minors because he’s a 20 year old with no MLB experience? I doubt the injury played much of a part in him not throwing shutouts every 5 days…
bravesfan
Psh… I like my reasoning better. Makes me have higher immediate hope. Move on with your much more rational input.

That was unexpected

So does Fried start tonight?

Looks like it. Good for the Cubs!

Literally the last guy I want hurt in this weak rotation. Well unless Gohara or Fried pitch well, they have to go get a starter.
realgone2
Your definition of weak is pretty……..weak
Knowthemarket
The Braves have the 8th best team ERA. That doesn’t seem week, Folty and Newcomb have been really good and really, we need to give Fried reps so we can see if he will be anything. I know we are risking a loss but the Braves still need to take chances and get to know their young talents.
TradeAcuna
It will balance out in the end. Folty is not a top of the rotation guy at all.

Gohara has pitched well since returning (only two appearances, but still …)
And Allard’s tearing up AAA. No need to panic or sell the farm.
bravesfan
I’d like to see Gohara get a spot start here.
bravesfan88
Can’t Gohara just pitched, and pitched very effectively I might add..
I like giving Fried a chance here..Let him come up, get his shot, and let’s see if the young man can rise to the occasion..
However, I’m not so sure this will go well for Fried. I’m expecting Maddon to preach patience to his hitters, work deep counts, get his pitch count up, and unless Fried brings his A game, he could see an early exit..
I’m expecting a line of the fomlowing from Fried…5IP, 6H, 4R, 3BB, 4K..
The Braves offense is going to need to step up today against Lester..If not, they’ll have to try and get to the bullpen early and get some timely big hits later on…
Unfortunately, with alm that being said, I’m predicting a Cubs win tonight, 6-3..However, hopefully, I am wrong…
bravos14
With the threatening weather in Atlanta the Braves should be even more aggressive on the bases than they normally would be against Lester. Let’s just hope the game begins near the original starting time or both teams may be going with back up plans.

Do you exercise caution or exercise precaution?

Fried? no Thanks

“right shoulder strain”
And that quick a MLB pitching career is over.

I don’t understand how Soroka can have a negative WAR all of his stats look really good 3.68 ERA 2.80 FIP 15 Ks and 4 BB in 14.2 innings, can anyone explain why his WAR is -0.2
bravesfan88
This is why advanced statistics aren’t the end all be all, especially when it involves small sample sizes…
It’s highly unlikely a replacement level pitcher comes in those games and performs as good or better than Soroka..I don’t think anyone would disagree with that statement..
jdgoat
No stats are the end all, be all. But to be fair, fangraphs has him with a positive WAR
nsmith12641
What is the difference in how each site calculates them for pitchers I saw on an earlier article the one for batters was explained
JamieMoyer 4
At the most basic level, Fangraphs WAR for pitchers is based predominantly on FIP, while Baseball-Reference’s is based on RA9 with adjustments for the overall quality of the team’s defense (among other adjustments).
bravos14
Clean MRI, I feel better, I’m sure he does as well, lol.
Geekgirl
Oh no! But where is Sanchez at? Wasn’t he doing better already????

Hope the rainout allows Gohara to assume his spot in this rotation.
