1:15pm: Cahill is expected only to be out for the required ten days, skipper Bob Melvin tells reporters including MLB.com’s Jane Lee (via Twitter). It is obviously not seen as a significant injury.
10:41am: The Athletics have announced the promotion of outfielder Dustin Fowler. He’ll take the open roster spot created by the placement of righty Trevor Cahill on the 10-day DL.
Fowler, acquired in last summer’s Sonny Gray trade, will be back in the majors after his first stint ended in calamity with a ruptured patella tendon in his very first game. The 23-year-old has been at full strength this year at Triple-A, where he has recorded a .313/.333/.484 batting line in 132 plate appearances.
It is not fully clear at the moment whether Fowler will get an extended look, as the A’s will ultimately need to add another arm to account for Cahill’s absence. It’s possible, though, that he’ll be given a chance to stake a claim to the job in center. The club has received middling production from Matt Joyce and Stephen Piscotty thus far and does not have a true center fielder on the roster. While Mark Canha has hit well since stepping in up the middle, and the A’s have a bevy of outfield-capable options, there’s a path to playing time for Fowler if the club so chooses.
As for Cahill, he has been diagnosed with an elbow impingement. It’s not clear at the moment how long he will be expected to miss. He had been off to an excellent start after signing with Oakland for $1.5MM late in camp. Cahill has worked to a 2.25 ERA with 11.6 K/9 against 2.3 BB/9 over 24 frames in four outings.
Filling the void could mean bringing back Kendall Graveman, but his struggles have persisted since his demotion. Otherwise, Frankie Montas and Daniel Gossett appear to be the top options on the 40-man roster.
Fowler better get a nice ovation from the Yankees fans when they play this week
So when Fowler gets hurt again he will sue the Athletics right?
really?
And here’s the dumb comment of the day. Well done.
What a stupid statement
The unfortunate incident in Chicago cost Fowler substantial MLB time. Put a price on his financial loss. Was the incident legally foreseeable? It was not in my view an assumption of the risk of playing baseball. An exposed electrical outlet. Should it have been covered? Hidden within the wall?
This is homerism on a brain damaged-level.
Look, i’ll at least give you reason to write this: the white sox suck and deserved it and every player should sue them whether or not they got hurt by the metal box within the field of play or not. There. Happy now?
Sheesh….
Daniel Gossett probably will get another chance now, he was really good in the minors during the last weeks. But not good to see Cahill injured after that great start.
I’d rather them call up Montas
Being that the schedule permits them from needing 5 SPs for a week, Cahill is going to just miss one start and rejoin it.
Now Gossett and Graveman do look like options to replace Anderson, who has basically one start left before he’s sent back.
Fowler is going to be a stud. I think the Yanks gave up way too much trading Fowler AND Kaprelian (Mateo was expendable) for Gray. I hope he succeeds in Oakland!
Yankees had/have so much outfield depth I think they’ll be fine (Judge, Hicks, Stanton, Frazier, Florial). But I really am glad to see Fowler make it back to the show so soon. Really hater giving up James K though. I think he’ll be a solid starter
Florial is not part of the Major League depth, and more then likely will be traded at he deadline for pitching.
I have to disagree, I think if any prospect gets dealt it’s Frazier/Adams/Andujar (hope not Andujar) before Florial. I think Cashman views him as an everyday CF in a year to two. 5 tool guys don’t come along too often.
Whatever prospects get dealt I just hope it’s worth it. Gray was not worth the package it took to get him
3 Future Hall of Famers for 2.5 years of a number 5 pitcher is way too much.
Guess David got an ouchie, That GDF announcing crew.
That “number 5 pitcher” has finished in the top 10 AL ERA 3 times in the last 5 years.
Please stop posting.
Currently he is ranked 52 out of 58 starters with at least 30ip. He doesn’t even qualify to be considered because he averaged too few innings per start. He is more a number 6 starter now.
Glad you agree too Vin
That is the problem with CaHill he always seems to get hurt the last few years. When healthy he is a solid starter but just can’t stay healthy.
the state of the A’s rotation with Cahill now on the DL: Manaea, a somewhat serviceable Mengden, Triggs (who should be the long man in the bullpen), hot garbage #1, hot garbage#2/reclamation project
Hey, Triggs last start was filthy good. When Triggs is healthy and on it that day, he can be a great starter.
Agreed! But they’re banking too much on him coming back from hip labrum surgery to be a starter who’s never thrown more than 67 innings in a season since being drafted, he’s going to hit that wall hard.
I see your point with the surgery he had, but he was a starter in college. Granted that was years ago and was never a starter in the minors. Yet, he’s an intriguing pitcher that the A’s got for nothing.
isn’t every starter pretty much able to be great when healthy and “on it that day”?
Theoretically, yes. However, what I was getting at is Triggs has good deception and movement with his pitches and hitters can have a hard time with that. So, when he’s working his pitches well, it can be difficult for hitters to square up against him.
Triggs last start wasn’t “filthy good” – he had a massive strike zone against the worst team in the AL.
Triggs doesn’t belong in a rotation, he’s a reliever masquerading as a starter because the cheap A’s refuse to pay for quality players and routinely make dumb FO decisions like playing players out of position and not understanding when to cut players and sending down Barreto to get more ABs but then bringing him up for 10 days and giving him 1 AB.
Why is he not a starter in your opinion?? He has better career numbers as a starter. He’s thrived in the starter role and can consistently pitch quality starts, until the occasional game where he gets blown up. But I agree with you on the way A’s work. I’m amazed a few players have not been cut like Joyce and Hatcher particularly.
Triggs threw 7 innings of 2 hits 0 walks and 9 Ks with a lot of weak contact and great movement with his pitches. It may have been the Orioles, but that is without question a tremendous start and Triggs has the ability to pitch like that consistently.
A’s already have their long man with Petit.
Diehard Yankee fan but it would be cool to see him hit a HR in his first AB at Yankee Stadium.
die hard Yankee fan here, no it would not.
As long as NY still has the lead after that homerun then yeah by all means lol
This has been Cahill’s problem his entire career. He is a good pitcher that can’t stay healthy.
He’s only missing 1 start, this isnt a big deal.
Hope Fowler has a All Star caliber career in Oakland. His MLB debut with the Yankees was heartbreaking and I wish him nothing but the best. ~A Yankees Fan
I second this as a yankee fan. Wish him nothing but the best.
Stop being so classy you guys, its messing up my hatred of Yankee fans lol
Oh please. Every fan base has classy (and classless) fans.
We have to remember the deal involving Sonny Gray included two blue ships that had major injuries i.e. Fowler’s knee and Kaprelian’s TJ (Mateo is a lose canon with skills but time will tell) so they A’s took a risky flyer. On the other hand, Sonny is not adjusting well in NY so again time will tell about this trade…
not adjusting, obviously you’re not paying attention to him
