MAY 25: Schimpf has cleared waivers and officially been released, per a club announcement.
MAY 22: The Angels have requested unconditional release waivers on infielder Ryan Schimpf, as per the team’s communications department (via Twitter). After being acquired from the Braves on March 31, Schimpf appeared in five games for the Angels, totaling seven plate appearances.
Schimpf, who just turned 30 last month, will again be on the move but this time have some control over his next destination. The infielder was traded three times in less than four months from December to March, starting with the Padres and then moving to the Rays and Braves before ending up in Anaheim.
Schimpf burst onto the scene with 20 homers in 330 PA as a rookie with San Diego in 2016, though even that early success revealed his all-or-nothing tendencies at the plate, as he racked up 105 strikeouts that season. In 534 career MLB plate appearances, Schimpf has 178 strikeouts and just a .195 batting average, though he could get on base at a decent (.318 OBP) clip. This extreme “three true outcomes” style made Schimpf less valuable given that homers aren’t hard to come by in the modern game, though it seems likely that another team will take a crack at signing Schimpf to see if it can iron out the holes in his swing.
per his request apparently… Odd, but oh well
he’ll probably sign with the dodgers…. just watch
he obviously left cause he wants big league time… dodgers won’t give that
He’s the type of player that Friedman loves. He gets on base at a decent clip and can play multiple positions. Other than JT, CT3, Bellinger, Puig, the Dodgers lineup is mostly a revolving door of players. I don’t think he’ll go to LA but he would get a decent amount of playing time.
Schimpf isn’t much of a fielder but could factor into the Mariners’ suddenly uncertain middle-infield mix or perhaps with the Mets as SoCalBrave suggested below, should they ever decide to move on from Jose Reyes.
Reyes can possibly be gone when Frazier comes off the D.L
he’ll sign with the Mets
I could see that
It would seem the Angels are clearing roster space for the recently promoted Matt Thaiss and Taylor Ward.
Jose Miguel Fernandez may be an option as well
Fletcher is more likely. Especially with Kinsler struggling so bad.
The Rangers will give him big league time. They need help everywhere on there big league team.
1 dimensional
That launch angle is his success and his crunch
Think Chris Carter with more strike outs
Carter and Schimpf have both struck out exactly once every 3 PA’s…..the difference is that Schimpf has hit a HR once every 12.74 AB’s. Carter hits one once every 15.62 AB’s. Schimpf is Carter with more power……
Except Carter has roughly 2000 more plate appearances than Schimpf – by the time Schimpf hits that mark, if he ever does, he could be much further behind Carter on the ABs/HR rate.
When are the Angels going to DFA old man Ian Kinsler?
why so many down votes? This must be on the Angels’ radar.
He’d make a perfect Ranger. Besides, all of their infielders have been either old/injured, or ineffective.
Cardinals may take a chance on him on a minor league deal. I could also see the Mets and dodgers as fits
It’s fun to have him around because he’s so unique. Hits like 75% flyballs. Three True Outcomes in the extreme. With the Padres he wasn’t terrible at third or first and could at least stand around in left and second. But hard to keep a guy like that around with three- and four-man benches.
Rockies’ bench players have been highly ineffective, and with DJ Lemahieu sidelined for an undetermined amount of time, I could see them taking a flyer on Schimpf.
Welcome to Arlington Ryan. The Rangers are very happy to have you on there big boy team
